:00:35. > :00:40.As he drives around Newcastle, something annoys him.

:00:41. > :00:48.Still no sign of any warning signs at all at the moment.

:00:49. > :00:51.We're about to turn onto John Dobson street.

:00:52. > :00:53.David was snapped by a bus lane camera on John

:00:54. > :01:00.He has since won his money back on appeal but thousands of

:01:01. > :01:02.other drivers have shelled out because this is

:01:03. > :01:08.It is a record breaker, taking more fines in

:01:09. > :01:16.It is just 70 yards long, but 62,975 fines were handed out

:01:17. > :01:20.to drivers illegally using this bus lane between February

:01:21. > :01:25.and October last year, making a total of over ?1.5 million,

:01:26. > :01:32.It's part of a wider campaign throughout the city that seems to be

:01:33. > :01:35.about making the city as unattractive as possible

:01:36. > :01:42.The fact of the matter is, lots of people need to use their cars.

:01:43. > :01:45.The rest of the road on John Dobson Street is open

:01:46. > :01:49.to the general public but a tiny little bit at the bottom there,

:01:50. > :01:53.which isn't an accident hotspot or congestion hot spot,

:01:54. > :01:57.yet apparently they have decided to make this unavailable

:01:58. > :02:02.The number of the people who were being caught in

:02:03. > :02:06.The council should have immediately realised that there was

:02:07. > :02:11.The did not react to the fact that many people,

:02:12. > :02:15.being used to John Dobson Street, were being taken by surprise by this

:02:16. > :02:19.bus lane and still find it very difficult to understand why

:02:20. > :02:23.the council would think this is a sensible way of organising

:02:24. > :02:26.the traffic in the centre of the city.

:02:27. > :02:29.Of course, you can change your route to avoid the camera but

:02:30. > :02:39.Somewhere on here I need to manage to carry out a three-point turn.

:02:40. > :02:43.Bearing in mind, fortunately there was an empty space here,

:02:44. > :02:50.I'm not sure I'm going to be able to do it in three points.

:02:51. > :03:03.If I was in a wagon or a large van, I wouldn't be able to do

:03:04. > :03:09.Well, a little earlier tonight Mark spoke to the council's

:03:10. > :03:13.Director of Development, Tom Warburton.

:03:14. > :03:15.It's not about fining people, it is about improving

:03:16. > :03:25.65% of people who come into the city centre come in by bus.

:03:26. > :03:27.Most of those come up John Dobson Street.

:03:28. > :03:30.You have been accused of running a campaign to make

:03:31. > :03:35.this city as unattractive as possible to motorists.

:03:36. > :03:41.We want drivers to come into Newcastle. Why should they if you

:03:42. > :03:48.find them? They do not get fined if we obey

:03:49. > :03:51.the rules of the road. Tell me one thing you're

:03:52. > :03:54.going to use that for? We have not made our mind up

:03:55. > :03:57.yet but we will spend It might be an improving public

:03:58. > :04:03.realm areas for the whole It would be a delight for me

:04:04. > :04:08.if nobody drove through that. Even when in it is bringing

:04:09. > :04:11.you in over a ?1 million? Is this a badge of pride

:04:12. > :04:18.to make so much money? Do you go to parties and say,

:04:19. > :04:21.look at us, we have got We had a spike when we first

:04:22. > :04:26.introduced the gate, When the BBC asked for the freedom

:04:57. > :04:59.lengthy delays on the A1. A murder investigation's under way

:05:00. > :05:02.tonight after the body of a man was found in a wheelie bin

:05:03. > :05:04.in a Tyneside back alley. The body was discovered

:05:05. > :05:06.in Northbourne Street, and has now been identified

:05:12. > :05:16.in connection with the killing, but Police are still appealing

:05:17. > :05:20.for any witnesses to come forward. Durham Police have been judged

:05:21. > :05:23.the top performing police force in the country,

:05:56. > :05:58.a huge tumour removed. He's now recovered and is planning

:05:59. > :06:02.a wedding and a fundraising trip At his worst, Adam was told nothing

:06:03. > :06:10.more could be done and he was sent But he was determined not

:06:11. > :06:14.to die at the age of 36. He'd heard about pioneering surgery

:06:15. > :06:17.carried out on the England rugby league plater Steve Prescott Steve

:06:18. > :06:20.sadly died just three weeks later The same operation was

:06:21. > :06:25.the last chance for Adam. I didn't really know how long

:06:26. > :06:29.I would have left to live. It was a difficult question to ask

:06:30. > :06:33.but it was as little Refusing to give up,

:06:34. > :06:41.stubborn Yorkshireman I am, I turned to the Internet

:06:42. > :06:45.and I followed a guy, Steve Prescott, former

:06:46. > :06:50.England rugby player, rugby league, who had the same

:06:51. > :06:53.disease as me and one of four people in the world to have gone

:06:54. > :06:58.through this and done very well. The 17-hour operation meant 30

:06:59. > :07:01.people working shifts and the removal of Adam's stomach,

:07:02. > :07:04.large and small bowel, gall bladder, pancreas, appendix,

:07:05. > :07:09.abdominal wall and spleen. He is forever grateful to the donor

:07:10. > :07:13.who gave him another chance at life. The reality of this is sadly

:07:14. > :07:20.somebody has died for me to survive. That is easy to forget and we must

:07:21. > :07:26.thank people that do this selfless I'm now back to work full time,

:07:27. > :07:32.eating and drinking as normal, having a really good social life

:07:33. > :07:38.and living life and enjoying life. That's all thanks to

:07:39. > :07:41.the medical team that believed Obviously, my partner, my fiancee,

:07:42. > :07:48.Laura, we're getting married in May this year,

:07:49. > :07:52.I could not have done She's been with me at

:07:53. > :07:59.every step of the way. Now Adam's taking on a gruelling

:08:00. > :08:03.transcontinental rally to raise money for the Steve Prescott

:08:04. > :08:04.Foundation and It's a 15,000-mile trek

:08:05. > :08:10.through Europe and into Asia in this 15-year-old Suzuki that's seen

:08:11. > :08:15.better days but we are There is massive risks

:08:16. > :08:19.involved with this. If I get into any medical

:08:20. > :08:22.trouble in the middle of the Gobi Desert in Mongolia,

:08:23. > :08:26.we could be in trouble. And after all his challenges so far,

:08:27. > :08:29.Adam will be embarking on his next 11 towns and cities,

:08:30. > :08:44.including Sunderland, have now put their names forward

:08:45. > :08:47.to become UK City Joining Sunderland on the list

:09:10. > :09:14.for his services to basketball. The 43-year-old American is the most

:09:15. > :09:18.successful coach in the history of the domestic game,

:09:19. > :09:22.with the club having picked up 24 national titles in the 13 years

:09:23. > :09:32.he's been in charge. Great to see, he certainly looked

:09:33. > :09:34.chuffed. Time for a look at the weather now,

:09:35. > :09:44.and with all the details, After a fairly decent they were in

:09:45. > :09:49.for a cloudy day tomorrow with some outbreaks of rain as we head into

:09:50. > :09:55.Friday afternoon. This is how things look tonight, if you outbreaks of

:09:56. > :09:59.rain across parts of Cumbria and Northumberland, we could see a touch

:10:00. > :10:06.of snow on high-grade but generally a dry night. Temperatures will drop

:10:07. > :10:12.down to three Celsius, we could see frost in spots and the wind will die

:10:13. > :10:17.down. Friday morning, we still have that rain across northern part that

:10:18. > :10:22.generally a dry start, thoroughly cloudy with a few breaks so expect

:10:23. > :10:27.some sunny spells but on Friday afternoon this rain pushes in from

:10:28. > :10:35.the south, temperatures could get up to 10 Celsius. That rain spreads to

:10:36. > :10:38.all parts on Friday night and by Saturday morning, still with us for

:10:39. > :10:43.a time but lots of clothes on Saturday, the rain will come and go

:10:44. > :10:46.through the morning and by Saturday afternoon that rain a little heavier

:10:47. > :10:53.and more persistent, temperatures up to seven or eight degrees. Looking

:10:54. > :10:58.further ahead into the weekend, Sunday looks like the better day, or

:10:59. > :11:02.cloud and that will be drier, temperatures are around seven or 8

:11:03. > :11:03.degrees and we keep the generally unsettled
