:00:28. > :00:29.But tonight he faces jail, after being convicted of
:00:30. > :00:31.a series of sex attacks on boys over almost 30 years.
:00:32. > :00:36.Our correspondent Peter Harris reports.
:00:37. > :00:38.Colin Gregg had led something of a life of distinction.
:00:39. > :00:49.Back in the '60s, he helped build up the family's bakery chain.
:00:50. > :00:52.He had also been an administrator of the Yellow Brick Road firm.
:00:53. > :00:54.That was setup to better the lives of children.
:00:55. > :00:57.As a result of his charity work, he'd even brushed
:00:58. > :01:00.The Duke of York coming to look at some of the work
:01:01. > :01:04.There was, however, a suggestion of a dark side in recent years.
:01:05. > :01:06.In 1997, he'd gone on trial for an allegation
:01:07. > :01:11.He was found not guilty, but more boys came forward.
:01:12. > :01:14.And we can now report that last year, he went on trial
:01:15. > :01:22.A jury found him not guilty of some allegations
:01:23. > :01:23.of indecent assault but, on many others,
:01:24. > :01:32.And that's how we ended up in Leeds at a retrial.
:01:33. > :01:35.And the jury found him guilty of nine counts of indecent
:01:36. > :01:38.Some of those allegations dating well back to the 1960s.
:01:39. > :01:41.And outside court we heard this reaction from the police officers
:01:42. > :01:49.This has been a long and complex inquiry.
:01:50. > :01:52.Colin Gregg was in a position of trust which he used
:01:53. > :01:57.We work today's outcome gives the victims some
:01:58. > :02:01.The case proves that it is never too late to report abuse.
:02:02. > :02:07.Colin Gregg always claimed that he was the victim of
:02:08. > :02:10.some kind of police witch hunt, that the boys were liars, motivated
:02:11. > :02:15.The prosecution said that, beneath his veneer of respectability,
:02:16. > :02:22.Clearly, that's a version accented by this jury.
:02:23. > :02:25.Now, he'll be back in court for sentence at Newcastle
:02:26. > :02:32.The judge has warned him that a custodial sentence is inevitable.
:02:33. > :02:35.Police investigating the discovery of a body
:02:36. > :02:38.in a wheelie bin in Gateshead have charged a man with murder.
:02:39. > :02:43.23 year-old Craig Eade's body was found in a back lane on Wednesday.
:02:44. > :02:45.A 36-year-old local man is due before magistrates tomorrow,
:02:46. > :02:51.The Independent Police Complaints Commission says the investigation
:02:52. > :02:53.into the death of Cumbrian toddler Poppi Worthington
:02:54. > :02:58.was "disorganised" and "not fit for purpose".
:02:59. > :03:01.The 13-month-old died at her home in Barrow in 2012.
:03:02. > :03:04.After her death, a family court judge said Poppi
:03:05. > :03:07.had probably been abused by her father, Paul.
:03:08. > :03:12.Today Cumbria police admitted making "basic mistakes"
:03:13. > :03:22.The blunders that marred the investigation into Poppi's death
:03:23. > :03:26.began the night officers were called to her home in December 2012.
:03:27. > :03:32.For instance, the child's last nappy was thrown out,
:03:33. > :03:42.The investigator found evidence that there had been
:03:43. > :03:48.It essentially was not fit for purpose.
:03:49. > :03:51.We found concerns in relation to the way that the scene
:03:52. > :03:56.The investigation then effectively went into cold storage
:03:57. > :04:01.while officers waited for pathology reports.
:04:02. > :04:06.Cumbria's chief constable admits it has been a shameful episode.
:04:07. > :04:12.They are basic things and I can only apologise to the family
:04:13. > :04:14.of Poppi Worthington for the basic mistakes that were made.
:04:15. > :04:18.I am not running away and we are not running away from our inadequacies
:04:19. > :04:24.We're not trying to cover anything up,
:04:25. > :04:27.not trying to pretend that it was better that it was.
:04:28. > :04:28.It was a wholly inadequate investigation.
:04:29. > :04:34.At an earlier family court hearing, a judge said Poppi
:04:35. > :04:36.was probably abused by her father, Paul Worthington.
:04:37. > :04:41.The IPCC report says there was enough evidence
:04:42. > :04:44.to arrest him on the day of Poppi's death, but delays meant
:04:45. > :04:45.he was later released without charge.
:04:46. > :04:49.The police insist they have learned lessons.
:04:50. > :04:54.With the checks and balances that we've now put in to make sure that
:04:55. > :04:56.no-one can sit on a case for seven months, I'm confident
:04:57. > :04:59.that that would not happen again in the same way,
:05:00. > :05:04.that would be challenged and picked up much quicker.
:05:05. > :05:07.A pensioner from Durham has finally won her appeal
