:00:12. > :00:14.The family of a Newcastle woman who died after a heart valve

:00:15. > :00:25.was put in upside-down, are taking legal action

:00:26. > :00:32.In 2015, she went into Newcastle's Freeman Hospital

:00:33. > :00:34.for a routine operation, but suffered massive

:00:35. > :00:36.Our News Correspondent Mark Denten reports.

:00:37. > :00:38.Laughing and joking with her friends.

:00:39. > :00:41.This is Sheila Hynes, the very picture of health.

:00:42. > :00:44.She was a lovely woman, wonderful mother, wonderful grandmother.

:00:45. > :00:49.But Sheila, who was 71, began to feel breathless, she was admitted

:00:50. > :00:51.to the Freeman Hospital for an operation

:00:52. > :00:55.A routine procedure, regarded as having just a 6% risk.

:00:56. > :00:59.The response I got from the nurse when I phoned,

:01:00. > :01:06.She started to say, "Where'd you live?"

:01:07. > :01:15.And she said, there's been complications in the surgery.

:01:16. > :01:17.Sheila Hynes had her operation on March 26 2015

:01:18. > :01:22.It emerged that during her surgery, a valve in her heart had been

:01:23. > :01:35.When they removed the valve, it forced a piece of equipment

:01:36. > :01:37.into the wall of her heart, puncturing it.

:01:38. > :01:40.The next time her heart ballooned up,

:01:41. > :01:48.The family say, while Sheila was fighting for her life,

:01:49. > :01:51.they were treated with gross insensitivity.

:01:52. > :01:53.We were told, it wasn't our choice to turn

:01:54. > :01:59.We said... We were told we had no say in that.

:02:00. > :02:02.In the same meeting, the secretary who was taking notes

:02:03. > :02:06.announced that she already had the coroner booked.

:02:07. > :02:08.This is while your mother is still alive?

:02:09. > :02:24.We applied to the coroner to have it look that as an Article II inquest

:02:25. > :02:27.and what that means is it a human rights consideration that Mrs Hynes

:02:28. > :02:29.lost her right to life as a result of this.

:02:30. > :02:33.This tragic event should never have occurred.

:02:34. > :02:36.Newcastle Hospital Trust has admitted the error

:02:37. > :02:39.and says its thoughts are with the family.

:02:40. > :02:43.They say a full independent investigation has taken place.

:02:44. > :02:46.An inquest into Sheila Hynes' death will take place in June.

:02:55. > :03:00.A murder of "unusual savagery and brutality."

:03:01. > :03:03.That's how the judge sentencing a man to life described the attack

:03:04. > :03:09.which led to the death of a mother of two in Carlisle last year.

:03:10. > :03:17.Miklos Verebes will serve a minimum of 28 years after using used a sharp

:03:18. > :03:19.stone to stab his former partner Melinda Koroshi almost 30 times.

:03:20. > :03:23.In September last year Miklos Verebes

:03:24. > :03:25.broke into the home of Melinda Korosi,

:03:26. > :03:30.Neighbours called the police when they heard her screaming,

:03:31. > :03:34.but when officers arrived just four minutes later she was already dead

:03:35. > :03:40.Miklos Verebes standing beside her covered in blood.

:03:41. > :03:43.Initially, he admitted killing her, but later in court tried to claim

:03:44. > :03:47.In sentencing today the judge said that excuse was "absurd".

:03:48. > :03:50.The police today welcomed the sentence given and also read

:03:51. > :03:53.a statement from Melinda Korosi's father.

:03:54. > :03:55.When detectives came to tell me the news,

:03:56. > :03:57.I felt like the earth had been removed

:03:58. > :04:00.from under my feet and suddenly everything became

:04:01. > :04:07.I simply couldn't believe and comprehend something this terrible.

:04:08. > :04:10.If I see a mother walking with their child down a street,

:04:11. > :04:20.The couple originally from Hungary moved to Carlisle

:04:21. > :04:23.in 2012 between then and 2016 Miklos Verebes raped

:04:24. > :04:33.Just days before he murdered her he was released

:04:34. > :04:36.from prison on licence after assaulting her in July.

:04:37. > :04:38.While Verebes was in prison Melinda Korosi came forward

:04:39. > :04:41.to police and told them she'd been raped,

:04:42. > :04:44.he was arrested in relation to those allegations but he wasn't charged

:04:45. > :04:50.he could not to understand why that action was taken.

:04:51. > :04:53.That matter is now being investigated by the Independent

:04:54. > :04:56.Police Complaints Commission and we're told

:04:57. > :04:59.Cumbria Constabulary is fully cooperating with that matter.

:05:00. > :05:02.Detectives are still hunting two men who abducted a woman

:05:03. > :05:05.and her toddler from a busy street, before subjecting the mother

:05:06. > :05:10.The abduction happened on Redcar seafront on Friday lunchtime.

:05:11. > :05:12.Earlier today, officers made an arrest - but that man's been

:05:13. > :05:21.Well, the police had been hoping that this

:05:22. > :05:25.breakthrough that they had been working towards ever since the

:05:26. > :05:30.They released a short statement at lunchtime today to say that a

:05:31. > :05:33.31-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of rape and was being

:05:34. > :05:38.But around tea-time tonight, another statement

:05:39. > :05:42.came out to say that man had been released without charge.

:05:43. > :05:45.So, it could be that they are back to

:05:46. > :05:51.To remind you, the attack itself happened in broad

:05:52. > :05:54.daylight, here on the Redcar seafront, sometimes between 1130 and

:05:55. > :06:00.Police say, the woman, who was with a toddler, was

:06:01. > :06:12.dragged, screaming, into a dark coloured saloon car which was then

:06:13. > :06:14.driven to the secluded area in the near by village of Yearby.

:06:15. > :06:16.There, she was raped and subjected to a

:06:17. > :06:26.Then, the men dumped her and the toddler on

:06:27. > :06:29.Kirkleatham Lane which is just on the outskirts of Redcar.

:06:30. > :06:35.Now, some of you may have seen this incident

:06:36. > :06:39.It's not clear whether that appeal on that actually led to the

:06:40. > :06:40.development in today's investigation.

:06:41. > :06:43.But, tonight, the police are still anxious for more

:06:44. > :06:47.witnesses to come forward and, of course, because this abduction

:06:48. > :06:50.happened here in broad daylight, right in the middle of the day,

:06:51. > :06:52.they are hopeful that more witnesses will come forward.

:06:53. > :07:01.Two people who were jailed for their part in the murder

:07:02. > :07:02.of a Newcastle man with learning difficulties,

:07:03. > :07:04.have had their sentences increased.

:07:05. > :07:06.James Wheatley was jailed for life in December last year

:07:07. > :07:10.But prosecutors argued that the sentences handed

:07:11. > :07:15.his mother - and another man - Barry Imray were unduly lenient.

:07:16. > :07:17.This afternoon the Court of Appeal ruled that Julie Mills,

:07:18. > :07:19.James Wheatley's mother, will have her sentence for causing

:07:20. > :07:23.increased from eight years to 10 years.

:07:24. > :07:26.And Nicole Lawrence, his girlfriend, had her sentence increased

:07:27. > :07:32.Barry Imray's sentence of three years was unchanged.

:07:33. > :07:35.A 19-year-old man's been charged with a murder in York.

:07:36. > :07:37.The dead man's been named as Shaun Skelton who was 53

:07:38. > :07:42.and lived in Holgate Road in the city.

:07:43. > :07:44.Daniel Thomas Reed, who's 19 and of no fixed abode,

:07:45. > :07:49.appeared before city magistrates and was remanded in custody.

:07:50. > :07:51.A nine-year-old boy who was seriously injured

:07:52. > :07:55.after being struck by a car in Hartlepool, has died.

:07:56. > :07:58.Ethan Owens had been in hospital since the incident on Marina way

:07:59. > :08:03.Police are asking anyone who saw what happened to contact them.

:08:04. > :08:06.Plans to build a school, a retail park and hundreds of homes

:08:07. > :08:08.on the site of the current Northumberland County Council

:08:09. > :08:13.Protestors outside County Hall in Morpeth say the proposals
