:00:19. > :00:21.Ferzana Khan was due to travel to Germany from her Middlesbrough

:00:22. > :00:23.home for pioneering treatment for the disease after

:00:24. > :00:29.But she died before she could make the trip.

:00:30. > :00:31.Now a campaign's been launched to encourage other women from Black,

:00:32. > :00:34.Asian and minority backgrounds to take a smear test.

:00:44. > :00:46.She was 41 when she died in January - three years after being diagnosed

:00:47. > :00:52.Now her relatives have started a campaign to encourage more women

:00:53. > :00:56.from minority ethnic backgrounds to attend their smear tests.

:00:57. > :00:59.I think seeing what her family went through, especially young children,

:01:00. > :01:05.You know, it doesn't matter how old you are.

:01:06. > :01:08.Even when you're 50, you still need your mum.

:01:09. > :01:10.So to see a five-year-old crying for his mum is

:01:11. > :01:14.And there has been, you know, so many other deaths

:01:15. > :01:17.within the community, people who died of cancer.

:01:18. > :01:21.With Ferzana, it's closer to home because she was so close to us.

:01:22. > :01:25.A recent survey by Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust -

:01:26. > :01:28.the UK's only dedicated charity - showed 30% of Asian women didn't

:01:29. > :01:35.And a third more black, Asian and minority ethnic women

:01:36. > :01:38.compared to white women said they had never attended screening.

:01:39. > :01:44.There is a real fear around the test itself,

:01:45. > :01:48.And also around what it was going to find.

:01:49. > :01:52.And this feeling of rather not knowing, the fear about cancer

:01:53. > :01:56.and cancer being a bit of a taboo subject.

:01:57. > :02:02.And also embarrassment, being a really big factor in it.

:02:03. > :02:05.Ferzana's family have now made a film as part of their campaign

:02:06. > :02:11.to try to encourage more women to turn up for their appointments.

:02:12. > :02:14.What it is, Doctor, we're going to Pakistan in the morning

:02:15. > :02:23.Now a lot of people are mentioning

:02:24. > :02:28.and realising factors affect every

:02:29. > :02:31.age group, it's not just the old,

:02:32. > :02:34.it's not just the young, it's indiscriminate.

:02:35. > :02:38.Earlier screening, Ferzana's friends say, could have helped her,

:02:39. > :02:43.allowing her more time with the family

:02:44. > :02:52.Detectives investigating a report of rape in Redcar last Friday,

:02:53. > :02:55.say the circumstances of the attack are not as first reported.

:02:56. > :03:00.Cleveland Police say they're no longer looking for two men

:03:01. > :03:03.who forced a woman and her child into a vehicle on Redcar seafront.

:03:04. > :03:05.They say enquiries are ongoing into an allegation of rape

:03:06. > :03:09.involving people who may have known each other.

:03:10. > :03:12.They're appealing for anyone who may have seen a woman and toddler

:03:13. > :03:15.in the area of Roseberry Road and Larkswood Road between 4pm

:03:16. > :03:22.The Newcastle upon Tyne NHS Trust has issued a statement

:03:23. > :03:28.the man in charge of Newcastle's hospitals,

:03:29. > :03:32.The Trust says an investigation is being carried-out into

:03:33. > :03:39.It said that placing him on extended leave is not an indication

:03:40. > :03:44.that the matters raised against him will be correct.

:03:45. > :03:46.They were conflicts which saw thousands of servicemen and women

:03:47. > :03:56.Today a memorial dedicated to those who fought in the two wars in Iraq

:03:57. > :03:59.and in Afghanistan was unveiled by the Queen in London.

:04:00. > :04:02.But some of the families of those who lost loved ones say they feel

:04:03. > :04:10.More than 800 British military personnel and civilians

:04:11. > :04:17.Today 2,500 people were invited to this event in London

:04:18. > :04:31.and a season for every activity under heaven.

:04:32. > :04:33.?1 million had been raised for the memorial.

:04:34. > :04:37.But some affected the most by the wars did not get an invite -

:04:38. > :04:38.like Janice Procter, from Washington.

:04:39. > :04:40.Her son, Michael Tench, was killed

:04:41. > :04:45.I didn't even know when it was being unveiled.

:04:46. > :04:49.Not any form of update to say that this was going to go ahead.

:04:50. > :05:02.I just kicked out of common courtesy for the respect shown to

:05:03. > :05:05.all fallen, it's not parents that need the recognition.

:05:06. > :05:14.Among those at the service was Tony Blair.

:05:15. > :05:16.The Chilcot Report last year concluded he overstated the threat

:05:17. > :05:26.and sent ill-prepared troops into battle.

:05:27. > :05:31.Janice has written to the Prime Minister

:05:40. > :05:45.Jog, walk, run a little from the lighthouse to the coast

:05:46. > :05:49.road into Sunderland city, ending up at the square.

:05:50. > :05:52.There's some comfort that a monument has been dedicated to

:05:53. > :05:58.But there has been controversy today.

:05:59. > :06:11.Our region paid a heavy price in the conflicts.

:06:12. > :06:13.The transport secretary Chris Grayling has been in Cumbria

:06:14. > :06:15.today to announce road widening schemes at roundabouts

:06:16. > :06:19.?2.6 million will be spent improving traffic flows on the A66 and A595

:06:20. > :06:22.ahead of major developments in west Cumbria such as the planned

:06:23. > :06:31.And he's hinted there may be bigger announcements in the future.

:06:32. > :06:34.This is a start to what I believe needs to be a rolling programme

:06:35. > :06:39.There's a huge investment plan down by the coast,

:06:40. > :06:45.We've got to make sure that this part of Cumbria has infrastructure

:06:46. > :06:52.These are two small schemes for a start -

:06:53. > :06:57.A Middlesbrough primary school has put up signs asking parents to put

:06:58. > :07:00.away their mobile phones and smile at their children when they pick

:07:01. > :07:05.The signs at St Joseph's Roman Catholic Primary School in Longlands

:07:06. > :07:07.say "Greet your child with a smile not a mobile."

:07:08. > :07:12.The school says it's part of an idea to get families

:07:13. > :07:22.talking at the end of the day - and first reactions seem positive.

:07:23. > :07:24.Were you surprised when they went up?

:07:25. > :07:28.When they come to pick their kids from school, they should

:07:29. > :07:31.be here to do that and talk to them about the day,

:07:32. > :07:36.not to be chatting on their phones. You know, it's wrong.

:07:37. > :07:39.Now to what scientists hope will be a giant leap for mankind -

:07:40. > :07:44.A spectacular event - has been taking place

:07:45. > :07:46.in Durham tonight - marking the official opening

:07:47. > :07:48.of an 11.5 million pound university building to house some

:07:49. > :07:54.Their mission is to unravel some of the greatest

:07:55. > :07:59.And a little earlier tonight - our reporter Sharon Barbour sent us

:08:00. > :08:09.Here we are outside the Ogden Centre for Fundamental Physics

:08:10. > :08:17.In a moment, were going to speak to a world renowned architect

:08:18. > :08:21.But, first, let's just find out a little bit about what this

:08:22. > :08:26.I'm joined by Professor Carlos Frenk, a cosmologist here.

:08:27. > :08:29.Tell us why it's so exciting to have this building here.

:08:30. > :08:32.Well, I had the privilege of working at Durham University for 30 years

:08:33. > :08:34.and I can say without hesitation, this is the most exciting

:08:35. > :08:38.Where we are opening this wonderful new building that will,

:08:39. > :08:41.for the first time in the history of modern astrophysics in Durham,

:08:42. > :08:47.all 150 astronomers in this university will be under one roof.

:08:48. > :08:51.Now, the question for you, Damien, was to create a building.

:08:52. > :08:53.Tell us what you've done with the building here.

:08:54. > :08:56.Well, I wanted to create a building that was in

:08:57. > :09:01.This is an ancient city with the best cathedral

:09:02. > :09:04.in the world, so a building that has the robustness and also the softness

:09:05. > :09:08.Local people, scholars, tourists, will be spending

:09:09. > :09:12.So I wanted to make it, not an institutional

:09:13. > :09:16.With wood, with warm materials, with the pleasure and joy

:09:17. > :09:19.of being in the world of the intellect.

:09:20. > :09:23.The building is based on geometries that relate to the cathedral,

:09:24. > :09:25.to the cosmic ideas but it's really just a humble building

:09:26. > :09:54.That's it from me. Now to the mysteries of the weather with Paul.

:09:55. > :10:02.One or two eastern areas cold enough for a touch of ground frost. Most

:10:03. > :10:11.places start fine and dry tomorrow. The cloud heading from the West

:10:12. > :10:16.through the day. Generally, a lot cloudier than it has been for the

:10:17. > :10:22.last couple of days. Temperatures should just scraped into double

:10:23. > :10:28.figures. A light southerly breeze. Tomorrow, a warm front bringing the

:10:29. > :10:37.cloud and rain. A cold front follows behind. Another one follows as we

:10:38. > :10:44.head into Sunday. So an unsettled spell as we head into the weekend.

:10:45. > :10:53.It will start to dry up and brighten up later on Saturday. Temperatures

:10:54. > :10:59.still make it into double figures. Sunday, temperatures again just into

:11:00. > :11:01.double figures. I'll leave you with the summary.

:11:02. > :11:08.day. On Sunday, cloudier, maybe spots of rain.

:11:09. > :11:15.Good evening, in the spring sunshine we saw temperatures as high as 17.5

:11:16. > :11:19.Celsius. Not as warm or Sonning on Friday. Still a lot of dry, settled

:11:20. > :11:23.weather in the forecast for the next few days. This was the sunset

:11:24. > :11:26.captured by one of our Weather Watchers. Clear skies there. We have

:11:27. > :11:30.had increasing amounts of cloud moving in from the West. Through the

:11:31. > :11:33.remainder of tonight we will continue to see that cloud across

:11:34. > :11:36.the south-west of England, the Channel Isles, weaving in across

:11:37. > :11:40.Wales, Northern Ireland and western Scotland. Bringing with it some

:11:41. > :11:44.outbreaks of drizzly rain, particularly around the coast and

:11:45. > :11:46.the hills. Further east, clear skies and the coldest temperatures. We are

:11:47. > :11:47.likely
