:00:17. > :00:22.Adam Elliott, who's six foot six, had told police he'd done nothing

:00:23. > :00:24.wrong and was simply too tall for the car.

:00:25. > :00:27.But today at Newcastle Crown Court he was described as a "buffoon"

:00:28. > :00:30.who put other people at risk, and was told to "grow up."

:00:31. > :00:37.He's either standing up or he's sitting on the back

:00:38. > :00:40.of the seat of the soft top convertible and trying

:00:41. > :00:43.Another driver on Gateshead's Felling Bypass was so concerned

:00:44. > :00:51.And today dangerous driver Adam Elliott

:00:52. > :00:55.Despite pleading guilty, this was how he explained himself

:00:56. > :01:07.I wasn't standing up in the car. That obviously didn't happen. I was

:01:08. > :01:09.that cause a distraction to other that cause a distraction to other

:01:10. > :01:11.road users. That is wrong, isn't it? The Judge said that

:01:12. > :01:24.was total nonsense. Even in the words of Elliott's own

:01:25. > :01:28.barrister, this was an act of complete buffoonery. The judge said

:01:29. > :01:35.it was the kind of thing someone might try one of the loan on a farm,

:01:36. > :01:39.certainly not on a dual carriageway. This is the first time I've ever

:01:40. > :01:42.come across something I guess. It's very unusual. The fact that he is

:01:43. > :01:46.tied to say that we are picking on him and he's too tall to dry the

:01:47. > :01:53.vehicle, it's a complete lie. You can see from the photograph, is a

:01:54. > :01:57.Elliott was less keen to speak to the media afterwards -

:01:58. > :02:00.sprinting from the court where he'd been given a nine month prison

:02:01. > :02:02.sentence, suspended for 18 months and disqualified for two years.About

:02:03. > :02:08.time, the judge said, for the giant bad driver to grow up.

:02:09. > :02:10.An inquest has heard an elderly driver may have been

:02:11. > :02:12.suffering from fatigue, moments before a crash that

:02:13. > :02:19.Hayley Murdoch, who was 29, and Sheila Dixon, who was 71,

:02:20. > :02:24.died at the scene on the A595 near Carlisle in February last year.

:02:25. > :02:25.Hayley's three-year-old son also suffered serious injuries.

:02:26. > :02:35.Jonah Dixon was driving his wife Sheila, granddaughter Hayley

:02:36. > :02:37.and great-grandson Logan home to Carlisle from a day

:02:38. > :02:42.Four miles west of Carlisle though, at Newby Cross, Jonah's car drifted

:02:43. > :02:45.across the carriageway and into the path of a Transit van.

:02:46. > :02:49.Today, an inquest found that Hayley Murdoch died

:02:50. > :02:54.from serious head injuries, Sheila Dixon from multiple injuries.

:02:55. > :02:56.It's an incident that's had a profound impact

:02:57. > :03:00.Hayley's then three-year-old son Logan also suffered serious

:03:01. > :03:03.injuries, while Jonah Dixon now relies on a wheelchair.

:03:04. > :03:08.The van driver said he saw Mr Dixon's Kia on the wrong

:03:09. > :03:11.side of the road several hundred yards away.

:03:12. > :03:14.He said it was a split-second decision to veer to his right

:03:15. > :03:16.to try to avoid the car, but the collision followed.

:03:17. > :03:19.PC Craig Irving, a crash investigator, told the hearing

:03:20. > :03:21.it was impossible to say what exactly had caused the crash.

:03:22. > :03:24.But, he said, fatigue and momentary distraction may have

:03:25. > :03:29.affected Jonah Dixon, who has no recollection of events.

:03:30. > :03:34."We continue to support both Jonah and Logan in their recovery.

:03:35. > :03:38."We are a close family, and now the inquest is over

:03:39. > :03:41."we will support each other in trying to move our lives forward."

:03:42. > :03:44.Coroner Kally Cheema concluded that both women died as a result

:03:45. > :03:54.A 14-year-old boy has been arrested after reports

:03:55. > :03:57.of a teenager being stabbed inside a supermarket in Newcastle.

:03:58. > :04:00.The 15-year-old boy was taken to hospital with serious -

:04:01. > :04:03.but not life-threatening - injuries after the stabbing in

:04:04. > :04:06.the Aldi store on Edgefield Avenue in Fawdon last night.

:04:07. > :04:14.Northumbria Police said they believed the teenagers knew

:04:15. > :04:17.each other and want to hear from two men who intervened.

:04:18. > :04:20.An investigation is underway after the body of a puppy

:04:21. > :04:24.was found in Newcastle, wrapped in a bin bag

:04:25. > :04:28.The dog was found in woods behind Mead Walk, in the Walker area.

:04:29. > :04:33.It's thought the animal was dead before the bag was set alight.

:04:34. > :04:36.The dog is believed to be a male Shih Tzu crossbreed,

:04:37. > :04:38.and had a microchip which gave no information other

:04:39. > :04:43.Police and the RSPCA are appealing for anyone with any

:04:44. > :04:47.Two trainee doctors from Newcastle are back home after setting

:04:48. > :04:54.up the first clinic of its kind in Bangladesh.

:04:55. > :04:56.The project, to help amputees, involves making plastic legs

:04:57. > :05:00.There are thought to be at least 40 million amputees throughout

:05:01. > :05:03.Matt Walton and Zaamin Hussain kept a video diary for

:05:04. > :05:12.Matt and Zaamin set up their clinic for amputees at a hospital run

:05:13. > :05:15.by a British charity in the north of Bangladesh.

:05:16. > :05:20.One of their patients had to be carried in by his father.

:05:21. > :05:23.Shiblu is a 16-year-old boy that was born without a leg.

:05:24. > :05:28.He was a very small boy, and this is because he hasn't had

:05:29. > :05:34.the stimulation from being able to walk around.

:05:42. > :05:45.The trainee doctors saw dozens of patients during their trip.

:05:46. > :05:51.Being an amputee in that kind of environment is extremely

:05:52. > :05:54.difficult, and a lot of the people have very hard lives.

:05:55. > :05:56.We're just scraping the surface of this problem.

:05:57. > :05:59.Overall, in the entire country, there are thousands and thousands

:06:00. > :06:03.of people who are in need of a service like this.

:06:04. > :06:08.Back on Tyneside, the pair raised thousands of pounds to pay

:06:09. > :06:14.Five months later, the moment they'd worked so hard for.

:06:15. > :06:17.Now we're manufacturing these limbs, it brings a huge amount

:06:18. > :06:21.It is a massive thing for us to be able to deliver to people,

:06:22. > :06:24.and will make an enormous difference to their lives.
