:00:13. > :00:16.A North East offshore worker has been exposed to radiation

:00:17. > :00:18.while working on an oil rig in the North Sea.

:00:19. > :00:22.Steve Innes, from Sunderland, was working on the giant

:00:23. > :00:28.He was told the job, didn't require extra protection.

:00:29. > :00:29.But he's now been told he was contaminated

:00:30. > :00:33.It's unclear how his health might be affected.

:00:34. > :00:39.Our Business Correspondent, Ian Reeve, reports.

:00:40. > :00:42.Steve has worked offshore for 30 years.

:00:43. > :00:46.But late last year he was exposed to radioactive materials

:00:47. > :00:53.during a shutdown on an oil and gas rig in the North Sea.

:00:54. > :00:56.It was, he says, a massive failing on behalf of the company

:00:57. > :00:58.he was working for, as well as the owner of the rig.

:00:59. > :01:06.Something that shouldn't have happened.

:01:07. > :01:10.HSE came down when we were working down on one of them and they told us

:01:11. > :01:13.they had done a reading the night before and it was off

:01:14. > :01:19.the map so then they did a reading on the one

:01:20. > :01:22.we were on and that was off the map so the work stopped.

:01:23. > :01:26.The company that Steve was working for - the Wood Group on the Thistle

:01:27. > :01:28.platform in the North Sea - says the health and safety

:01:29. > :01:32.All six workers involved in the incident were

:01:33. > :01:38.They believed they were working in a safe environment.

:01:39. > :01:43.No one would expect that to happen and obviously you would expect

:01:44. > :01:45.safeguards the burdens of that couldn't happen and people

:01:46. > :01:56.Once everyone was aware it had happened, they were taken to a room,

:01:57. > :01:59.there was a professor brought in who explained the dangers,

:02:00. > :02:02.I think it was the radiation they were exposed to,

:02:03. > :02:04.the long-term effects could be cancer or leukaemia

:02:05. > :02:09.and they would have to get regular blood checks and that this

:02:10. > :02:14.Steve can't claim for personal injury until there's proof

:02:15. > :02:17.that his health has suffered because of the incident.

:02:18. > :02:19.But he does want the issue to be taken more seriously

:02:20. > :02:22.than he feels it has been, given the effect on him

:02:23. > :02:29.Some of the lads, some of them can't go to work,

:02:30. > :02:32.on medication, can't sleep, worried about it, he has been sent

:02:33. > :02:39.Waiting for results coming back like we all are.

:02:40. > :02:42.And we are just hoping that somebody will step forward and take a hold

:02:43. > :02:50.of the situation and start doing the right thing, you know?

:02:51. > :02:59.Rather than trying to sweep it under the table and under the carpet.

:03:00. > :03:02.Four months ago Colin Flannery was at home in Whitley Bay

:03:03. > :03:04.on North Tyneside when his heart suddenly stopped.

:03:05. > :03:13.Today he met the paramedics who helped to save him.

:03:14. > :03:17.But first on the scene was his neighbour, Colin tells his story.

:03:18. > :03:22.I was sitting in the front lounge on my iPad.

:03:23. > :03:25.Next thing Gail knew my iPad had dropped to the floor.

:03:26. > :03:27.She looked over and I was slumped in the lounge.

:03:28. > :03:31.I was just calling his name and he didn't come round,

:03:32. > :03:35.so I phoned the services straightaway and they told me

:03:36. > :03:41.to get him on his back and try and start resuscitating him.

:03:42. > :03:46.I think because it was my own, I was in a panic, and I rang to get

:03:47. > :03:51.The worst-case scenario was unfolding.

:03:52. > :03:55.He didn't look well at all, so it was just a case of getting air

:03:56. > :04:02.Seemed like minutes, probably was, but I carried on and all of a sudden

:04:03. > :04:12.Colin just gave this huge gasp and I thought, "Well,

:04:13. > :04:37.Derek did a fantastic job and it made not have had the outcome had it

:04:38. > :04:42.not been for Derek's actions and being so quick delivering CPR.

:04:43. > :04:45.I would encourage anyone who knows CPR, if you ever have

:04:46. > :04:53.I feel so grateful that the paramedics have saved my life

:04:54. > :04:55.and also my neighbour, who initially started

:04:56. > :05:00.Sunday is Mother's Day - a lovely day for many,

:05:01. > :05:03.but if your Mum has died recently, it can be really tough.

:05:04. > :05:05.Tynedale Hospice at Home in Northumberland has been working

:05:06. > :05:07.with children who've suffered that loss.

:05:08. > :05:15.To help explain the work the charity does, the children made a film.

:05:16. > :05:18.This film is made by young people who go to Rainbow Club

:05:19. > :05:37.My favourite memory of mum is when we went

:05:38. > :05:38.to Disneyland Florida and rode on dolphins.

:05:39. > :05:52.I remember roller-skating for her and slipping over

:05:53. > :06:08.We are all unique, so different things have helped us
