:00:12. > :00:16.An inquest into the deaths of three men at a care home

:00:17. > :00:19.in North Yorkshire has heard that one of those who died was emaciated

:00:20. > :00:24.Albert Pooley died last year at Sowerby House -

:00:25. > :00:31.a care home in Thirsk that's been at the centre of recent controversy.

:00:32. > :00:34.At today's inquest, his wife said prior to his death -

:00:35. > :00:36.she'd raised concerns with staff about his care.

:00:37. > :00:50.Test the inquest heard complaints that she had raised concerns about

:00:51. > :00:57.the levels of care that he'd been receiving. She was seen arriving at

:00:58. > :01:00.the inquest this morning and said she feared he was not being fed

:01:01. > :01:08.properly and not being given enough to drink. She had concerns about him

:01:09. > :01:13.being bathed and showered. We've also heard evidence from a nurse who

:01:14. > :01:18.did one shift here at the home in April of last year. She described

:01:19. > :01:22.how the residents had been left sitting in your grin and one was

:01:23. > :01:29.left having his breakfast with hundreds of ants covering the table.

:01:30. > :01:32.She spoke to me outside. I was horrified, trying to address the

:01:33. > :01:36.problems of that others could deal with it. I spoke to the nurse that I

:01:37. > :01:43.was working alongside. I spoke to the manager but nothing was getting

:01:44. > :01:52.done about these incidents. The home has been the focus of controversial

:01:53. > :01:55.headlines. The death of one resident sparked an investigation whilst last

:01:56. > :02:02.year, the quality of care was strongly criticised. Since then, the

:02:03. > :02:06.owners of the home same mistakes have been corrected and a new

:02:07. > :02:12.management team has been put in place. Acted a's EnQuest we heard

:02:13. > :02:15.from JoAnn King, the foreign manager, as she admitted there were

:02:16. > :02:24.deficiencies in record-keeping because staff did not recognise the

:02:25. > :02:26.importance. She was asked, did you have proper control? She said, I

:02:27. > :02:31.think I tried my very best. A man's been jailed after pointing

:02:32. > :02:34.a fake gun at a young family in a road rage incident

:02:35. > :02:37.on the A1 in Gateshead. 38 year old Craig Mafhan was driving

:02:38. > :02:40.on the Western Bypass last September He pulled alongside the other

:02:41. > :02:45.driver, whose two children were in the car, and pointed

:02:46. > :02:49.what looked like a handgun at him. He was jailed for 27 months

:02:50. > :02:55.after pleading guilty to possession of an imitation firearm with intent

:02:56. > :02:58.to cause fear. An investigation is under way

:02:59. > :03:00.after claims a workman was seen with a can of beer

:03:01. > :03:03.at a demolition site hours He was in the site office

:03:04. > :03:07.of the Odeon demolition on Pilgrim Street in Newcastle

:03:08. > :03:10.on Tuesday morning. Part of the building

:03:11. > :03:13.and scaffolding collapsed Crime has increased

:03:14. > :03:20.and their repeated complaints That's what some people living

:03:21. > :03:24.near two care homes for vulnerable They say the police have been called

:03:25. > :03:30.200 times in nine months. Stockton Council opened the homes

:03:31. > :03:33.so children didn't have to be sent And it says the majority of police

:03:34. > :03:43.calls have nothing to do with crime. In packed public meetings,

:03:44. > :03:46.some claimed the homes would bring crime, vandalism and anti-social

:03:47. > :03:51.behaviour to their quiet villages. Now those same people say

:03:52. > :03:54.they've been proved right. They say the police have recived 119

:03:55. > :04:11.calls about this care home We are hearing about general

:04:12. > :04:18.vandalism, assaults in the home. How can you be sure it came from the

:04:19. > :04:22.home? You reported to the police. You don't get that sort of activity

:04:23. > :04:27.if there is no issues. Before it was opened we had one community police

:04:28. > :04:36.officer. They actually cycled to the village. That is how much there was.

:04:37. > :04:42.People living near the care homes see they received 200 calls about

:04:43. > :04:46.incidents. The figures showed a majority going missing but there

:04:47. > :04:50.were 19 incidents of violence. And 23 reported incidents

:04:51. > :05:02.of criminal damage, nuisance We are anxious that the residents

:05:03. > :05:08.have a quiet life. The new manager starts next week and we want to work

:05:09. > :05:08.alongside him and the existing staff to achieve the best possible

:05:09. > :05:10.outcomes. The homes were set up

:05:11. > :05:12.so vulnerable children would no longer have to be moved to other

:05:13. > :05:15.parts of the country, The aim was to give them

:05:16. > :05:26.a better start in life. Nobody from Stockton council would

:05:27. > :05:32.talk on camera but in a statement they said the homes were rated good

:05:33. > :05:36.and well run but it is not uncommon for police to be called because

:05:37. > :05:41.staff must follow strict guidelines. They must call the police every time

:05:42. > :05:43.a child or young person does not come home one time and they say that

:05:44. > :05:50.is the reason for these lease call-outs. The council says these

:05:51. > :05:51.are not bad children and should not be demonised but what they need is

:05:52. > :06:05.support from local people. The Workington Lifeboat team have

:06:06. > :06:07.taken delivery of a new, The Shannon class boat is called

:06:08. > :06:11.the Dorothy May White - after the woman who left a million

:06:12. > :06:14.pounds to the RNLI in her will. Mark McAlindon joined

:06:15. > :06:18.the fanfare for her arrival. Flat out at 25 knots,

:06:19. > :06:21.the Dorothy May White is a speedier successor to the John Fisher she has

:06:22. > :06:28.come to replace in Workington. She's more deft too,

:06:29. > :06:44.and at a cost of ?2.1m, It is like going from a Ford Cortina

:06:45. > :06:51.to a Ferrari. Everything is controlled with electronics, it has

:06:52. > :06:57.jets instead of propellers. The current lifeboat does 16 knots. This

:06:58. > :07:06.is a tough business, saving lives at sea. It shows how brave these guys

:07:07. > :07:14.are that when they head out to sea, this environment can be quite

:07:15. > :07:21.forbidding. This is one example. 30 miles to safety.

:07:22. > :07:25.The new boat will mean getting to incidents much quicker.

:07:26. > :07:36.Technology has moved on. This is at the edge of cutting-edge technology.

:07:37. > :07:40.This boat's capabilities at sea, it is wonderful. It will serve us for

:07:41. > :07:43.many years to come. But there is no statutory

:07:44. > :07:45.support for these brave The late Dorothy May left

:07:46. > :07:50.a million to the RNLI, while a trust stumped up ?500,000

:07:51. > :08:01.for this new vessel. We've had some very generous

:08:02. > :08:05.bequests and the support from the local community has been absolutely

:08:06. > :08:08.phenomenal. We've been really grateful for everybody's help and it

:08:09. > :08:09.looks as though we will be there very shortly. I'm very happy indeed

:08:10. > :08:11.about it. The John Fisher will now go

:08:12. > :08:14.into some form of retirement - while Dorothy May White will be

:08:15. > :08:16.keeping the shores Rare Roman artefacts are being put

:08:17. > :08:23.on display at museums along the length of Hadrian's Wall as part

:08:24. > :08:26.of an exhibition which launches This Ribchester-style Helmet,

:08:27. > :08:30.which was delivered to Newcastle's Hancock Museum today,

:08:31. > :08:37.is on loan from the British Museum. Other artefacts which celebrate

:08:38. > :08:42.the role of the Roman Cavalry will be on show at Museums

:08:43. > :08:44.from Maryport to South Shields Football now - and there were big

:08:45. > :08:49.games tonight at the top of the Championship and bottom

:08:50. > :08:51.of the Premier League. But Match of the Day is on just

:08:52. > :08:54.after this bulletin - so if you don't want to know

:08:55. > :08:57.the scores you know what to do. Hull City came from behind to earn

:08:58. > :09:00.a crucial victory against relegation The 4-2 result leaves

:09:01. > :09:09.Boro 19th in the table. Meanwhile, Newcastle

:09:10. > :09:12.overhauled Brighton at the top of the Championship with a 1-0

:09:13. > :09:15.victory against Burton, which a controversial refereeing

:09:16. > :09:17.decision threatened to overshadow. That's all the news

:09:18. > :09:19.and sport from me tonight. Time for the weather

:09:20. > :09:35.now with Paul Mooney. Mostly dry sums up the weather in

:09:36. > :09:40.the past few days. A mixture of cloudy areas and clear skies. It is

:09:41. > :09:48.and pieces of code will come and go. It will hold this up. No lower than

:09:49. > :09:54.six or seven in the countryside, a couple of degrees colder. It is

:09:55. > :10:03.bright in eastern areas, some of that will fill in. The best of any

:10:04. > :10:12.sunny spells lingering across parts of Northumberland. Tomorrow, that is

:10:13. > :10:19.mid-50s. Similar to the sort of figures we had. This area of high

:10:20. > :10:26.pressure dominating. It stays with us as we head towards the weekend.

:10:27. > :10:29.There is a change in wind direction from the north-westerly to more of a

:10:30. > :10:35.south-westerly or even a southerly as we head into the weekend. That

:10:36. > :10:40.will bring a few subtle changes. For Friday it is mostly dry but cloudy.

:10:41. > :10:47.The temperatures will make 12 or 13 Celsius and the wind will drift in

:10:48. > :10:50.from that westerly direction. We will see the cloud become more

:10:51. > :10:54.broken. In southern areas we will see blue skies and sunshine. The

:10:55. > :11:00.temperature will start to claims that by Sunday afternoon, 18 Celsius

:11:01. > :11:01.is possible. That is the way it is looking.

:11:02. > :11:04.or 15. It is sunny towards the weekend and we could see the low 20s

:11:05. > :11:06.by Sunday. Here
