:00:11. > :00:11.Hello, good evening. pro-Brexit MPs in the election.

:00:12. > :00:14.It is if you're a Newcastle United fan -

:00:15. > :00:16.the Magpies are back in the Premier League!

:00:17. > :00:18.They beat Preston at St James' Park tonight.

:00:19. > :00:21.It means they're now sure of promotion back to the riches

:00:22. > :00:42.Yes. And, Newcastle were heading for the championship, wondering what the

:00:43. > :00:47.future held in store, but the last game of last season was a 5-1 win

:00:48. > :00:51.over Tottenham Hotspur and give them some hope for the future. More

:00:52. > :00:55.importantly, the band that they banded together to convince a Rafa

:00:56. > :00:59.Benitez he should stay at Newcastle to help them bounce back into the

:01:00. > :01:01.Premier League at the first time of asking. He has done exactly that.

:01:02. > :01:04.This is what it means to be back at English football's top table

:01:05. > :01:06.The Championship title may still elude them,

:01:07. > :01:09.but most will agree that, for Rafa Benitez and his side,

:01:10. > :01:12.Newcastle, who've been limping towards the finishing line recently,

:01:13. > :01:17.Ciaran Clark's effort turned in off the elbow of Ayoze Perez.

:01:18. > :01:18.But mid-table Preston fancied the role of party-poopers.

:01:19. > :01:21.They were foiled here by Rob Elliot, back after a year out,

:01:22. > :01:24.but minutes later Clark failed to pick up Jordan Hugill

:01:25. > :01:27.Benitez cut a frustrated figure as the atmosphere turned nervy,

:01:28. > :01:30.but when Newcastle played the visitors at their own

:01:31. > :01:32.counterattacking game, Mitrovic's cross was turned

:01:33. > :01:38.The Magpies flew out of the blocks after half-time but had

:01:39. > :01:41.lost their way a bit when Paul Gallagher was sent off

:01:42. > :01:45.Matt Ritchie brought the roof off St James'

:01:46. > :01:49.A further slice of luck for Perez put the icing on the cake,

:01:50. > :01:52.as United were at last able to enjoy their big night.

:01:53. > :01:55.Only one team in the last five seasons has managed automatic

:01:56. > :01:58.promotion the year after relegation from the Premier League.

:01:59. > :02:02.At the end, joy tinged with relief, and the hope that Benitez and owner

:02:03. > :02:04.Mike Ashley can agree a transfer kitty in the summer.

:02:05. > :02:07.The promotion party's likely to go on well into the night.

:02:08. > :02:21.A comfortable win for Newcastle in the end. Not a straightforward

:02:22. > :02:26.season for them by any means. In the last few weeks there have been

:02:27. > :02:31.hiccups but the fact is now the chasing pack, Huddersfield Town and

:02:32. > :02:37.Reading cannot catch Newcastle now they are back in the Premier League.

:02:38. > :02:38.A huge crowd at Saint James's Park, most of them going home happy but

:02:39. > :02:39.also relieved. Well, we struggled a bit

:02:40. > :02:41.in the first half. In the second half we got a lot

:02:42. > :02:45.better and we got the goals, but... We're back up in the

:02:46. > :02:48.Premier League now. I think Rafa's going to sign a load

:02:49. > :02:55.of new players, and Newcastle Yeah, but he's going

:02:56. > :02:58.to keep Matt Ritchie. I think the owner's going to learn

:02:59. > :03:01.his lesson this time. Realistically, we should have

:03:02. > :03:03.come first, but I'm happy. I'm happy with the promotion.

:03:04. > :03:11.I'm happy. Two games still to go and the title

:03:12. > :03:14.is not out of reach, but they now plan for next season, and also Mike

:03:15. > :03:18.Ashley must make sure Rafa Benitez is manager next year. Rafa Benitez

:03:19. > :03:21.was asked at the Premier League whether he would be back next

:03:22. > :03:24.season, but he answered, cryptically, you never know, that's

:03:25. > :03:28.football. Questions for Mike Ashley to deal with, but now Newcastle fans

:03:29. > :03:34.can convert themselves that next season won't be the likes of

:03:35. > :03:38.Bardsley, Burton and Brentwood Albion, but the likes of Arsenal,

:03:39. > :03:39.Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester

:03:40. > :03:41.City. More on that in tomorrow's

:03:42. > :03:43.Look North, of course. Elsewhere in football today,

:03:44. > :03:45.Hartlepool parted company Pools are now in the League

:03:46. > :03:48.two relegation zone, having won just four

:03:49. > :03:53.of their last 18 games. Around 150 officers have

:03:54. > :03:55.been involved in raids this evening on shops,

:03:56. > :03:56.businesses and houses on Teesside, in connection

:03:57. > :03:59.with the supply of class-A drugs. Ten properties were targeted and six

:04:00. > :04:02.people have been arrested so far. Police!

:04:03. > :04:13.Police! They were, detectives said,

:04:14. > :04:16.targeting an organised criminal gangs involved in the supply

:04:17. > :04:19.of heroin and cocaine. Just after six o'clock,

:04:20. > :04:26.ten addresses across Stockton were raided -

:04:27. > :04:28.houses, hairdressers, There were around 150

:04:29. > :04:35.officers involved in this Clearly, one of our main

:04:36. > :04:41.priorities is drug dealing, anti-social behaviour and crime,

:04:42. > :04:43.and the effect that has So, hopefully, today has sent

:04:44. > :04:50.a clear message out regarding drugs will not be tolerated,

:04:51. > :04:52.dealing drugs will not be tolerated, and if you continue to do so,

:04:53. > :04:56.there is a likelihood that a member of our team will be coming

:04:57. > :05:00.and knocking on your door. Detectives said some of the

:05:01. > :05:02.drug dealing and criminality on the streets was blatant,

:05:03. > :05:05.and some living here said they were frightened

:05:06. > :05:09.to let their children play outside. The important thing

:05:10. > :05:11.is that the police and our partner organisations work together

:05:12. > :05:13.with the community to tackle criminality, and that's

:05:14. > :05:15.what we've seen today, and I'm sure Stockton's

:05:16. > :05:21.a better place as a result. Here, the police say it is important

:05:22. > :05:24.that people see the calls they make and the intelligence they supply

:05:25. > :05:27.does result in action and arrests. Stuart Whincup,

:05:28. > :05:34.BBC Look North, Stockton. The police are continuing

:05:35. > :05:36.to question a woman, after a man was found dead

:05:37. > :05:39.in a house in Sunderland. Officers were called

:05:40. > :05:41.to Kemble Square in the Downhill area of the city on Saturday night,

:05:42. > :05:44.where a man in his 40s was Three other people have

:05:45. > :05:50.been released on bail. A 48-hour strike by RMT union staff

:05:51. > :05:53.working for Virgin Trains East Coast The walk-out was due to take place

:05:54. > :05:59.this Friday and Saturday, the same weekend as

:06:00. > :06:03.the Tour de Yorkshire. More than ?1.5 million

:06:04. > :06:06.is being spent to try to reduce The lottery-funded project,

:06:07. > :06:11.called "Choices", is intended to support 450 people who face

:06:12. > :06:14.extreme employment challenges For thousands of people living

:06:15. > :06:22.in rural parts of the region, buying their own home has become

:06:23. > :06:25.a distant dream. Today, though, a pilot scheme

:06:26. > :06:28.was launched in North Yorkshire Hambleton District Council wants

:06:29. > :06:31.to see more affordable houses built, and has promised to help by cutting

:06:32. > :06:35.red tape and speeding up Rural North Yorkshire has long been

:06:36. > :06:43.a desirable place to live, but buying a house here

:06:44. > :06:47.is not that simple. There's not many for sale,

:06:48. > :06:50.and those that are are often Chad Scatchard and his partner,

:06:51. > :06:56.Caroline Nelson, are first-time buyers who are keen to live

:06:57. > :06:59.in rural North Yorkshire. Affordable options, though,

:07:00. > :07:04.are few and far between. The only option would be to go

:07:05. > :07:08.into a town or city. Yeah, we'd have to be further away

:07:09. > :07:11.to get the cheaper houses, but we don't want to move away

:07:12. > :07:13.from our area, In Hambleton, though, a large rural

:07:14. > :07:17.district of North Yorkshire, a pilot scheme has been launched

:07:18. > :07:19.to build more housing The scheme is being

:07:20. > :07:25.led by the council, and in market towns like Easingwold,

:07:26. > :07:30.it aims to speed up the planning process by matching potential buyers

:07:31. > :07:34.with landowners, small builders The council has also promised a more

:07:35. > :07:39.flexible approach to planning - good news for the Jacksons,

:07:40. > :07:42.whose plans to build their own home There's been lots of ideas

:07:43. > :07:49.and lots of words have been put into my head that we can possibly

:07:50. > :07:53.use to help the planning forwards. We feel that this is a way,

:07:54. > :07:56.by developing small sites, and it is something

:07:57. > :07:59.that is appropriate for village development,

:08:00. > :08:03.rather than large-scale. By this time next year,

:08:04. > :08:06.it is hoped the pilot scheme will have made a difference,

:08:07. > :08:09.allowing people like Chad and Caroline to stay and live

:08:10. > :08:14.in these rural communities. Phil Connell,

:08:15. > :08:18.BBC Look North, North Yorkshire. And time for the weather

:08:19. > :08:20.prospects for the week ahead. I don't know how many seasons

:08:21. > :08:33.we had in one day today, Snow is not that uncommon this late

:08:34. > :08:37.in April, but it always seems to come as a shock. Heading through the

:08:38. > :08:43.week ahead, we certainly have a flavour of winter for the first few

:08:44. > :08:48.days. Showers, hail, sleet, snow and frosty nights, gradually slowing to

:08:49. > :08:52.become milder later in the week. Wintry showers tonight, and a Met

:08:53. > :08:55.Office warning of the risk of a couple of centimetres in places into

:08:56. > :09:00.the night. A widespread frost as well with temperatures away from

:09:01. > :09:04.clouds hovering around freezing, feeling bitterly cold in the north

:09:05. > :09:08.to north-westerly wind. Tomorrow morning, the showers become more

:09:09. > :09:13.widespread. In many eastern areas, sleet and snow for a time. Then it

:09:14. > :09:16.settles... It won't settle at lower levels, but during the day,

:09:17. > :09:20.temperatures between shower clouds will know it away. Six or seven

:09:21. > :09:24.Celsius in the East, and more shelter in the West and fewer

:09:25. > :09:28.showers means you might just see double figures, perhaps in Cumbria.

:09:29. > :09:32.Still feeling bitterly cold in that north wind. Heading to tomorrow

:09:33. > :09:38.evening, further showers and east, and some sleet and snow, and clearer

:09:39. > :09:41.but frosty in the West. Temperatures again hovering around freezing as we

:09:42. > :09:47.head into Wednesday morning. Starting on Wednesday with a rash of

:09:48. > :09:51.showers in eastern areas, and they will tend to fizzle out through the

:09:52. > :09:55.gate. The afternoon sees most places dry and bright. Still a northerly

:09:56. > :10:00.wind, so temperatures no warmer. Still in the rain, seven or 10

:10:01. > :10:04.Celsius through the afternoon. 10 Celsius is the high, 50 Fahrenheit.

:10:05. > :10:07.Heading through the middle part of the week, high-pressure, feeding

:10:08. > :10:11.that cold air in. This weather front will bring some more widespread rain

:10:12. > :10:17.for a time on Thursday, and into Friday before we start to lose that

:10:18. > :10:21.northerly wind. High-pressure maintains its grip as we head

:10:22. > :10:24.towards the weekend. So, on Thursday, bad weather front brings a

:10:25. > :10:28.lot of cloud in outbreaks of rain, especially in eastern areas.

:10:29. > :10:32.Temperatures creeping up a little bit, in western parts 12 or 13

:10:33. > :10:37.Celsius. Still a northerly breeze down that east Coast, and Friday has

:10:38. > :10:42.a quieter day. That rain gives way to one or two showers, and the North

:10:43. > :10:48.Yorkshire coast and the Cumbria coast but dry weather in between

:10:49. > :10:52.times, and temperatures ten or 13 Celsius. That is up to the mid-50s

:10:53. > :10:55.Fahrenheit. Heading towards the weekend, I will keep you up-to-date

:10:56. > :10:59.on your BBC local radio station. The breakfast show is tomorrow morning

:11:00. > :11:01.and a great place to check out snow showers. Now they look ahead at next

:11:02. > :11:05.weekend for our region. course, there'll be the threat of

:11:06. > :11:07.some rain. More with the national forecast now.

:11:08. > :11:13.Good evening. It's been turning colder from the north so far today.

:11:14. > :11:17.It's been cold enough for significant snow in northern

:11:18. > :11:20.Scotland. This was mid afternoon. More recently it's been blowing

:11:21. > :11:25.around over the tops of the mountains. Snow in April not

:11:26. > :11:30.necessarily unusual but it's usually unwelcome. The colder air coming in

:11:31. > :11:33.behind the front which clears towards the near continent, opening

:11:34. > :11:38.the floodgates to this Coldstream of air all the way from the Arctic.

:11:39. > :11:42.That cold air increasingly cold air will spread its way across all parts

:11:43. > :11:46.tonight and will be with us tomorrow and Wednesday as well. A cold night

:11:47. > :11:49.ahead of us. A widespread frost developing and further wintry

:11:50. > :11:53.showers. Most in Scotland and the north-east of England too. Cold

:11:54. > :11:57.winds as well. Maybe a few wintry showers in Northern Ireland and

:11:58. > :12:00.Wales, maybe the odd few into the Midlands. Clear skies, windy and

:12:01. > :12:01.cold. Major towns
