:00:56. > :00:57.A former Cumbrian Scout leader Norman Thompson from Wigton,
:00:58. > :01:00.was sentenced to 16 years in prison today after admitting abusing seven
:01:01. > :01:06.The youngest was just nine years old.
:01:07. > :01:27.Norman Thompson's victims saw him at first as a
:01:28. > :01:28.He gained their trust and that of their parents,
:01:29. > :01:29.and then he abused it, with horrific consequences.
:01:30. > :01:29.Norman Thompson's, for want of a better word,
:01:30. > :01:30.He's ingratiated himself into the community.
:01:31. > :01:34.He's ingratiated himself into the Scout movement.
:01:35. > :01:39.And he's used his position there to sexually abuse young boys.

:01:47. > :01:49.He'd ply them with alcohol, and it was often on those trips
:01:50. > :01:53.He took photographs of them, he showed them child pornography.
:01:54. > :01:57.We heard today that one boy was so distressed by Thompson's
:01:58. > :02:00.behaviour that he sewed up his sleeping bag to try
:02:01. > :02:05.Thompson was eventually suspended from the Scouts group,
:02:06. > :02:11.The testimony of his victims, the reason he's in prison.
:02:12. > :02:13.I've got nothing but the utmost admiration
:02:14. > :02:18.Norman Thompson is spending 16 years behind bars as a direct result
:02:19. > :02:23.The court heard how the victims' lives have been scarred

:04:07. > :04:09.Will her next stop bring her face-to-face with those
:04:10. > :04:13.The location was promising, this centre in North Shields
:04:14. > :04:21.After avoiding protesters at one door, she arrived to another
:04:22. > :04:26.to an audience with more Conservative activists.
:04:27. > :04:35.But she did recall to talking to Labour voters in her first election.
:04:36. > :04:39.There were quite a few Labour voters in that constituency.
:04:40. > :04:42.But what I found when I talked to those Labour voters were people
:04:43. > :04:45.who were really patriotical, they loved their country.
:04:46. > :04:48.They took great pride in their region.
:04:49. > :04:52.They wanted to see a better future for themselves and their children.
:04:53. > :04:55.Now, if you look at those issues, it's not the Labour Party
:04:56. > :04:57.offering that to people, it's the Conservative Party,
:04:58. > :05:02.it's me and my team today, offering people that brighter future.
:05:03. > :05:18.So are 2017's voters in North Shields ready to shift?
:05:19. > :05:21.I don't like either at the minutes, to be honest.
:05:22. > :05:23.Tourism after the working-class, they never will.
:05:24. > :05:27.It is still time for the Prime Minister to meet
:05:28. > :05:33.Well, Theresa May's visit to the North East brought
:05:34. > :05:35.criticism from Labour, which said local voters would not be
:05:36. > :05:36.fooled by the Prime Minister's message.
:05:37. > :05:44.The Liberal Democrats and Ukip have also been giving their view.
:05:45. > :05:50.The people of this region are not full. They understand quite clearly
:05:51. > :05:55.what the Tory government has done in this region. They ripped the heart
:05:56. > :05:59.and souls out of hundreds of communities. In this region we have
:06:00. > :06:05.unemployment levels nearly double that of the average. We have under
:06:06. > :06:10.employment. What do you say to the claim that Labour has taken the
:06:11. > :06:13.north-east for granted? I do not accept that. People are very
:06:14. > :06:19.disappointed with the Labour Party that has let them down over the last
:06:20. > :06:23.parliament. Very weak leadership from the Labour Party. From the
:06:24. > :06:27.Conservative Party we have a lot of rhetoric. They need to see through
:06:28. > :06:31.the Conservatives and understand that conservatives have form. They
:06:32. > :06:33.are not going to deliver on their promises and they will not deliver
