:00:33. > :00:39.But thanks to a clinical trial which doctors in Newcastle helped
:00:40. > :00:41.lead in the year 2000, many have lived to see children grow
:00:42. > :00:46.And some are now thought to be cured - something doctors
:00:47. > :00:50.at the city's Freeman Hospital never thought possible.
:00:51. > :00:52.The long-term results of the trial have just been accepted
:00:53. > :00:54.for publication and patients have spoken exclusively
:00:55. > :01:02.I think I just thought there wasn't another option, really.
:01:03. > :01:05.I think 17 years later, it never occurred to me I'd still be alive.
:01:06. > :01:09.It never occurred to me I'd see my family grow up.
:01:10. > :01:11.I thought probably by 50, I would be dead.
:01:12. > :01:19.Even if he had been alive and been a match,
:01:20. > :01:21.I would have been too old to have a bone
:01:22. > :01:25.I would have danced with the devil to have extra time.
:01:26. > :01:30.I've seen seven grandchildren being born.
:01:31. > :01:33.Can't believe I would have lasted for 17 years
:01:34. > :01:37.and that the disease would have gone.
:01:38. > :01:39.You know, without research, half the patients with this disease
:01:40. > :01:41.would have died after five years and now they have
:01:42. > :01:47.So it's painful and expensive to do research.
:01:48. > :01:52.I feel very lucky, very blessed, to have been
:01:53. > :01:55.in Newcastle at the time when they were offering this option.
:01:56. > :01:58.For the most part, people go on the drugs that I'm
:01:59. > :02:00.on and within a few months, six months, they're back to normal.

:02:12. > :02:19.Cumbrian school pupils are being encouraged to consider
:02:20. > :02:21.careers in the county's emergency services.

:03:13. > :03:15.We hope they'll be inspired by lots of things that we do.
:03:16. > :03:17.We're going to show them a few different things.
:03:18. > :03:21.We're going to show them how to do CPR and put airways in and show them
:03:22. > :03:24.the different kit that we carry and explain about all the different
:03:25. > :03:26.It's not just paramedics and technicians.
:03:27. > :03:28.We've got lots of urgent care, patient transport staff
:03:29. > :03:31.and lots of other jobs you wouldn't even consider.
:03:32. > :03:35.Well, I love helping people, I love the patients.
:03:36. > :03:38.My role in Cumbria is a community-based role.
:03:39. > :03:41.It is to increase survival rates of cardiac arrest so I'm out
:03:42. > :03:44.there in the community and I get to meet lots of people,
:03:45. > :03:46.engage with lots of people, every single day.
:03:47. > :03:51.So, Lauren is one of many emergency services staff who are here today
:03:52. > :03:54.to share a bit of their passion and hopefully encourage young people
:03:55. > :04:03.in Cumbria to consider a career in the emergency services.
:04:04. > :04:06.A report into severe flooding in York during Christmas 2015 has
:04:07. > :04:08.concluded the decision to open the Foss Barrier was correct.
