:01:35. > :01:37.Today, a collective sigh of relief here as things begin

:01:38. > :01:50.A merchant seaman suffering a suspected heart attack has been

:01:51. > :01:52.winched off a ship off the coast of Sunderland.

:01:53. > :01:55.A Tynemouth lifeboat crew tried to treat the Chief Engineer on board

:01:56. > :02:00.But as the weather conditions worsened, a Coastguard rescue

:02:01. > :02:08.helicopter was called to winch the casualty to hospital.

:02:09. > :02:11.The police in Cumbria are going to recruit extra staff

:02:14. > :02:17.High profile prosecutions have led to a huge increase in the number

:02:18. > :02:24.of people reporting abuse - as Mark McAlindon reports.

:02:38. > :02:39.We've had about a 25% increase in sexual offences over the last

:02:40. > :02:43.year, and in the previous year before that, we had another 25%

:02:44. > :02:45.increase, so it's a huge increase, a huge burden for us,

:02:46. > :02:48.but what it does show is that people have the confidence to come

:02:49. > :02:52.So we've always known that the levels of sexual offending

:02:53. > :02:55.were higher than that reported to us, but now we're

:02:56. > :02:57.narrowing that gap and more people are coming forward,

:02:58. > :03:04.Andy Slattery says all allegations are investigated, but that it has

:03:05. > :03:10.One of the cases brought before Carlisle Crown Court last year

:03:11. > :03:12.was that of former Scout leader Ian Beeby.

:03:13. > :03:15.He was jailed for five years for a series of historic offences

:03:16. > :03:20.against four young boys back in the 1980s.

:03:21. > :03:22.But while these investigations can be costly and time-consuming,

:03:23. > :03:24.police say they are prepared to throw extra resources

:03:25. > :03:31.We are in the process of recruiting police staff investigators,

:03:32. > :03:34.CID trained retired officers or other people, and they are going

:03:35. > :03:36.to come in and they are going to work specifically

:03:37. > :03:41.on the non-recent allegations in the major investigations.

:03:42. > :03:48.Sport now and in the Premier League, it was nil-nil

:03:49. > :03:54.But Sunderland were beaten 3-1 in their match against Stoke,

:03:55. > :03:56.leaving the Black Cats embedded in the relegation zone.
