:00:15. > :00:16.But today, preparations were being made for families fleeing

:00:17. > :00:19.the war in Syria to start a new life here.

:00:20. > :00:24.Now local people are being asked to play their part in making

:00:25. > :00:26.the refugees welcome ahead of their arrival in Cumbria.

:00:27. > :00:33.The war in Syria has killed hundreds of thousands and displaced millions.

:00:34. > :00:37.Many have fled abroad, seeking sanctuary and security.

:00:38. > :00:40.Here, the British government has agreed to take around 20,000

:00:41. > :00:44.refugees, and up to 300 could in time come to Cumbria.

:00:45. > :00:47.Today, around 150 people keen to help turned up

:00:48. > :00:54.We want to give people ideas about how they can help.

:00:55. > :00:57.Whether that's coming along to the drop-in sessions

:00:58. > :01:01.that we'll be running weekly, offering language support,

:01:02. > :01:05.We'll be working with the local authorities

:01:06. > :01:09.on these schemes, but we'd like to help sign up volunteers.

:01:10. > :01:15.Speakers included those who'd fled Syria

:01:16. > :01:18.in the past, and who continue to send help.

:01:19. > :01:25.This is a very human moment when you see this number of people

:01:26. > :01:28.who are welcoming new families to be accepted by the British

:01:29. > :01:32.government to be resettled in Cumbria.

:01:33. > :01:34.And it's sometimes the simplest acts that make

:01:35. > :01:40.When you're forced to leave and come, and you are

:01:41. > :01:44.depressed by what we have seen, little words make a big difference.

:01:45. > :01:48.A nice good morning to them in the morning would make a big

:01:49. > :01:52.difference to their feelings, to how they can start the day.

:01:53. > :01:54.The first Syrian families to arrive in Cumbria

:01:55. > :02:02.Newcastle city council has been given more than ?200,000 of Lottery

:02:03. > :02:06.cash, as it looks into handing over its parks and allotments

:02:07. > :02:12.Although the council says it would still own the city's 33 parks

:02:13. > :02:17.and other green spaces, it wants to transfer

:02:18. > :02:19.the day to day responsibility to a new charitable trust.

:02:20. > :02:21.The scheme being considered would help tackle the financial challenges

:02:22. > :02:28.In the last few minutes, the centrepiece of the new Wear

:02:29. > :02:31.crossing in Sunderland has been lifted into place.

:02:32. > :02:34.The A-frame is the largest structure to be raised in this way in Britain

:02:35. > :02:45.It weighs more than 1,500 tonnes and is a hundred meters tall.

:02:46. > :02:52.Obviously there are always things that are unforeseen.

:02:53. > :02:55.But up to this stage, I can say, so far, so good.

:02:56. > :02:59.This is the culmination of months of work,

:03:00. > :03:04.but as the A-frame approached vertical, it was steady away to make
