:01:18. > :01:21.to come forward to protect the blood transfusion service.

:01:22. > :01:24.The BBC's Inside Out programme's been told that

:01:25. > :01:27.unless numbers increase, future demand may not be met.

:01:28. > :01:33.Farah Smith's life was saved by donated blood.

:01:34. > :01:35.At 21 months she had surgery to remove

:01:36. > :01:40.She had 40 blood and platelet transfusions.

:01:41. > :01:42.Without them in her operation, she would never

:01:43. > :01:48.Blood supply at present is adequate, but donors are getting older.

:01:49. > :01:51.In the year to March, more than half the

:01:52. > :01:56.donors in the north-east were aged 45 and over.

:01:57. > :01:59.Over the last decade, we have seen a 40% fall in the number

:02:00. > :02:01.of new donors coming forward to donate for the first time.

:02:02. > :02:03.We need those new donors, otherwise we won't

:02:04. > :02:06.be able to meet the demands of hospitals in the future.

:02:07. > :02:08.To do that they need to recruit 200,000 new

:02:09. > :02:13.Like Laura, whose blood is particularly valuable.

:02:14. > :02:16.Only 7% of the population have O negative, and that can be

:02:17. > :02:24.So it is used in emergencies and things like

:02:25. > :02:28.that, if they don't have time to find out people's blood type.

:05:40. > :05:43.moves quickly eastwards across Scotland. For Northern England,
