:00:32. > :00:38.Hundreds of teaching assistants and their supporters marched

:00:39. > :00:40.through Durham today as part of an ongoing dispute

:00:41. > :00:45.The plans could mean a substantial pay cut for thousands of staff

:01:03. > :01:06.for fair contracts for Durham's teaching assistants.

:01:07. > :01:10.They were going to make us do the same hours on 23% less pay

:01:11. > :01:14.or work more hours for 10% less pay and expect us to carry on doing

:01:15. > :01:17.the same job with the same dedication we have always shown,

:01:18. > :01:18.and we just weren't prepared to accept that.

:01:19. > :01:21.The contract changes were supposed to happen in January,

:01:22. > :01:23.but following industrial action that plan has been suspended

:01:24. > :01:28.until September and negotiations are continuing.

:01:29. > :01:30.There is positive progress being made between Unison,

:01:31. > :01:35.the teaching assistants and Durham Council.

:01:36. > :01:37.We are really keen to get a resolution to this dispute quickly

:01:38. > :01:42.It has been a very stressful time for them.

:01:43. > :01:45.More than 2000 teaching assistants will be affected

:01:46. > :01:50.Today support for them came from across the country.

:01:51. > :01:53.All you are asking for ultimately in this life is a living wage and

:01:54. > :02:02.They are already low paid, and in the context of an attack

:02:03. > :02:05.where salaries were being slashed by up to 23%, I really felt

:02:06. > :02:08.it was incumbent on me to make the journey up and show support

:02:09. > :02:14.Durham County Council this week said notable progress had been made

:02:15. > :02:16.on the contract review and it is hopeful a positive

:02:17. > :02:27.Police are investigating the rape of a 15-year-old girl in Newcastle.

:02:28. > :02:29.It happened in Exhibition Park last night.

:02:30. > :02:34.They say she left the area with a male member of the group

:02:35. > :02:37.who she did not know at which point she was raped.

:02:38. > :02:39.An investigation has been launched to identify the person responsible

:02:40. > :02:41.and specialist officers are currently supporting

:02:42. > :02:50.Details of Nissan's demands from the Government when the future

:02:51. > :02:52.of the carmaker's Sunderland plant was in doubt have been revealed.
