:00:08. > :00:12.Don't drink Carlsberg beer or any of their product - that is the

:00:12. > :00:16.extraordinary view of one Leeds MP, who feels so strongly about what

:00:16. > :00:20.has happened here today - the closure of the Tetley brewery in

:00:20. > :00:27.Leeds, and the loss of 189 years of history.

:00:27. > :00:30.Also: A trail of destruction - 7 family cars are torched as

:00:30. > :00:33.arsonists target one street in south Yorkshire.

:00:33. > :00:39.And petal power - a flower arranging as you have probably

:00:39. > :00:42.never seen it before. Cloudy skies on the view towards

:00:42. > :00:52.Almeley Moore, setting the scene for an unsettled weekend. Details

:00:52. > :00:59.

:00:59. > :01:03.Good evening. I am live outside the Carlsberg Tetley brewery in Leeds,

:01:03. > :01:07.which to ride has closed. Some people just can't believe that this

:01:07. > :01:13.day has actually happened. Many have come out over the last hour in

:01:13. > :01:19.tears. This is why. It brings to an end 189 years of brewing history in

:01:19. > :01:23.Yorkshire. Until recently, the site was producing around 16 that

:01:23. > :01:29.million pints of beer every year. Now more than 100 people are losing

:01:29. > :01:32.their jobs. In its heyday, more than 200 people were employed here.

:01:32. > :01:37.Carlsberg has said that they have closed this down because of one

:01:37. > :01:44.factor - fewer people are buying beer. But there is a deep heard

:01:44. > :01:46.here tonight. They used to be a very close-knit community here and

:01:46. > :01:52.Spencer Stokes has spent the day here.

:01:52. > :01:57.The final pint brewed, the final shift over, Tetley staff walk away

:01:57. > :02:01.from 189 years of history. Normal shift was suspended today. Some

:02:01. > :02:06.workers gathered in the yard, with these men marking their last hours

:02:06. > :02:11.with the photographs on an iconic sculpture. Staff talk not of their

:02:11. > :02:17.colleagues or friends but of the Workplace family. We are still

:02:17. > :02:22.mates on and off shift. We are a close family. We are a team. We are

:02:22. > :02:27.a family. An emotional day for you today? The very emotional. It was a

:02:27. > :02:32.long time coming but it is a sad day. Tomorrow, when the brewery is

:02:32. > :02:39.closed and I come by it and it is not bear... It is there, but not

:02:39. > :02:44.open - a sad day. My wife works here. She worked here for 11 years.

:02:44. > :02:51.My son worked here. My other son's wife weightier, so it was a real

:02:51. > :02:55.family business. A great company to work for. It is the end of an era.

:02:55. > :02:59.Attention now turns to the future of the multi-million-pound complex.

:02:59. > :03:04.Some staff will be retained to dismantle it. Next week, demolition

:03:04. > :03:09.will get under way, but there is no long-term plan for the future of

:03:09. > :03:13.the side. However, it city-centre location makes it an extremely

:03:13. > :03:18.valuable asset for Carlsberg and some suspect that is the real

:03:18. > :03:23.reason for the closure. So on times, big companies like the one that has

:03:23. > :03:28.decided to close this place could have us all as well as a bank book.

:03:28. > :03:33.At the moment, it is the bank book that his ruling their thoughts.

:03:33. > :03:38.Beer making in Leeds will continue after today, with a host of smaller

:03:38. > :03:43.breweries carrying on where Tetley left off. They want drinkers to

:03:43. > :03:49.boycott the Carlsberg empire. Falling beer consumption increased

:03:49. > :03:53.import costs and taxes. It is an economic decision, but

:03:53. > :03:57.unfortunately the Tetley brewery hearing Leeds had to close. That

:03:58. > :04:02.was never a decision that was taken lightly. A lot of consideration had

:04:03. > :04:06.to go into it. From tomorrow, this will no longer be the home of

:04:06. > :04:11.Tetley's - and within a year, there will be little evidence that this

:04:11. > :04:18.was once one of the world's largest breweries.

:04:18. > :04:24.In its heyday, 2000 people were employed by Tetley's in his brewery.

:04:24. > :04:28.Suppose we use the term end of an era rather glibly, but I have to

:04:28. > :04:33.say that many of the workers who have left here tonight - to those

:04:33. > :04:41.who worked for the company over many years - a cherished the place

:04:41. > :04:48.and its history. We all worked hard. My you could have an extra pint, as

:04:48. > :04:53.long as nobody saw you! Memories and pints flow every Friday at this

:04:53. > :04:58.social club. It is here that former Tetley's staff gather to reminisce.

:04:58. > :05:03.The atmosphere was just great. You know everybody when you were going

:05:03. > :05:09.around the brewery. You spoke to them, had a crack with them and,

:05:09. > :05:14.had a bit of a laugh. Tetley's, established by Joshua Tetley, was

:05:14. > :05:19.that, for many years, a family company. Until the 1970s, family

:05:19. > :05:24.members were still on the board. An original Tetley landlord remembers

:05:24. > :05:29.being vetted by the Tadley family before taking on his first bubble.

:05:29. > :05:34.They took me up to the board room. There were pictures of people who

:05:34. > :05:40.worked there. Not just people the word in the office - barmaids,

:05:40. > :05:46.drain men, and it was a fantastic feeling. That age has come to an

:05:47. > :05:51.end now and it is a sadness. brewery used to produce 200 million

:05:51. > :06:00.pints of Tetley's every year - a beer love to buy casual drinkers

:06:00. > :06:05.and connoisseurs. -- beloved by. remember being asked where I came

:06:05. > :06:11.from and I said Leeds, and a man who did not speak any English said,

:06:11. > :06:17.Tetley tea's! That gives you an indication of how the firm was

:06:17. > :06:23.known. Five years ago, this was still the world's most popular cask

:06:23. > :06:33.ale. Beer was shipped abroad and, until 2001, delivered to to Leeds

:06:33. > :06:39.by great men. -- pied Dream men. was a really good firm to work for.

:06:39. > :06:45.People used to look and take photos. It was daft, sitting there in the

:06:46. > :06:50.rain, but it was a job and I enjoyed it. This move brewed since

:06:50. > :06:57.1822 was the famous slogan. The brewing will continue but from now

:06:57. > :07:01.one in Wolverhampton. That is what it means to so many

:07:01. > :07:05.workers and has meant over the years, but with me now is Greg

:07:05. > :07:10.Mulholland, B Leeds MP, who feels very strongly about what has

:07:10. > :07:16.happened here. You want a boycott of Carlsberg products - is that not

:07:16. > :07:24.too harsh? As consumers and upright citizens of Leeds, there is only

:07:24. > :07:28.one thing we can do. Carlsberg refuse to engage in discussions.

:07:28. > :07:33.All we can do is not buy their product. They turned their back on

:07:33. > :07:37.Leeds, I think the people of Leeds should turn their backs on them.

:07:37. > :07:42.Many people are very sad and drowning their sorrows, but isn't

:07:42. > :07:49.this a reality check. Carlsberg had said that fewer people are buying

:07:49. > :07:55.beer. Carlsberg have been dishonest in their reasons for closing at

:07:55. > :08:00.this famous brewery. It is a sad day. It is about making money.

:08:00. > :08:07.Tetley is still a huge seller. Another fact is that cascade beer

:08:07. > :08:11.is actually increasing and expanding. -- task beer. We have

:08:11. > :08:16.fantastic small breweries that are keeping the tradition alive. These

:08:16. > :08:22.will be the theatre of Leeds brewing. The argument that micro-

:08:22. > :08:27.breweries are doing a better job, cheaper to a certain extent, is not

:08:27. > :08:33.valid? It is great that we have these wonderful breweries. I am

:08:33. > :08:40.drinking a pint of Leeds Pale Ale. There are many others. They are the

:08:40. > :08:44.future. Cars Bowe decided that not only do they not care about Leeds,

:08:44. > :08:48.but they do not even want to brew Tetley's at all. Someone else is

:08:49. > :08:57.brilliant for them in a Wolverhampton. It is time people it

:08:57. > :09:03.showed how they feel about that. -- is brewing it for them up.

:09:03. > :09:07.We will have more reaction later on. If as you say, scores of you have

:09:08. > :09:12.been contacting us soap we will be giving your reaction towards the

:09:12. > :09:16.end of the programme. A grieving couple who lost their

:09:16. > :09:22.baby after a series of delays during childbirth say they are --

:09:22. > :09:26.their confidence in the NHS is shattered. The couple endured a 60

:09:26. > :09:31.hour wait before their son Oliver was delivered by Caesarean. This

:09:31. > :09:34.week, a coroner ruled that the that delay was largely to blame for the

:09:34. > :09:39.baby's death and has criticised management practices and Dewsbury

:09:39. > :09:43.hospital. Speaking for the first time, the heartbroken couple told

:09:43. > :09:46.us their story. For Sarah Dawson and Phillip

:09:46. > :09:55.Schofield, the joy of seeing their baby all other born last July

:09:55. > :10:00.quickly turned to heartbreak. -- all over. He hit shortly died after

:10:00. > :10:07.developing pneumonia. You forget for a time and then it comes back

:10:07. > :10:11.to you. I felt like I was suffocating. From one day, go into

:10:11. > :10:18.a healthy pregnancy to having nothing. All the preparations that

:10:18. > :10:21.you have made - it all has to be spirited away. Philip took Sarah to

:10:21. > :10:25.Dewsbury hospital for what they thought would be eight routine

:10:25. > :10:29.birth. But an inquest this week said that Sarah should have been

:10:29. > :10:37.given an assisted delivery after her waters broke. According to

:10:37. > :10:43.national guidelines, pregnant women have a choice. Cerys baby was not

:10:43. > :10:49.delivered until 61 hours after her waters broke. The hospital's policy

:10:49. > :10:54.is not to carry out inductions at night. I would rather have been

:10:54. > :10:59.induced to there and then, knowing that my waters had broken. If the

:10:59. > :11:09.policy was different and they did induce on and night, this

:11:09. > :11:17.

:11:17. > :11:25.suggestion is this would never have There is absolutely no way that

:11:25. > :11:29.this should ever happen again. No way at all. It completely ripped

:11:29. > :11:33.our lives apart and there is no reason why it should ever happen to

:11:33. > :11:38.anybody else. A while the pain of losing her first child will never

:11:38. > :11:41.go away, the couple say they are now looking forward, not back. They

:11:41. > :11:48.hope that lessons can now be learned so that others will not

:11:48. > :11:52.have to ensure a similar ordeal. The Conservative MP for Shipley has

:11:52. > :11:57.caused a stir by suggesting that disabled people should be allowed

:11:57. > :12:00.to work for less than the minimum wage, in order to get a job. Philip

:12:00. > :12:04.Davies said in the House of Commons that disabled people who were

:12:04. > :12:13.struggling to find work she a DP a allow it to offer themselves for a

:12:14. > :12:16.lower rate of pay. -- should be allowed. Given that some people

:12:16. > :12:21.with the learning disability cannot be as productive in their work as

:12:21. > :12:26.somebody who has not got a disability of that nature, it was

:12:26. > :12:29.inevitable that, given the employer was going to have to pay them the

:12:29. > :12:33.same, they would have to take on the person that would be more

:12:33. > :12:41.productive and less of a risk. That was during those people a huge

:12:41. > :12:47.disservice. The chief executive of Mind is with us. Your reaction?

:12:47. > :12:50.are astonished and quite horrified by these comments. It shows a real

:12:50. > :12:54.lack of understanding of the experiences of the book with mental

:12:54. > :12:58.health problems and learning disabilities. It also shows a view

:12:58. > :13:02.that says that people with a disability should be treated as

:13:02. > :13:08.second-class citizens, to suggest that somebody should be paid less

:13:08. > :13:13.than the minimum wage because they have a disability. It feels to us

:13:13. > :13:17.like it is thoroughly inappropriate and a very out-of-date view.

:13:17. > :13:23.Davies claimed that he is merely reflecting comments made to him by

:13:23. > :13:27.constituents. How would you reacted to that? We know that people are

:13:27. > :13:32.extremely concerned about how they can find their help and support to

:13:32. > :13:36.get into work, and we know that there is a big job for employers to

:13:37. > :13:40.make sure they are giving people a fair chance. But to do this in the

:13:40. > :13:44.context of the amount of money that is being paid feels inappropriate.

:13:44. > :13:51.If somebody rang me to say that they were extremely cross about

:13:51. > :13:57.this, because they currently earn the minimum wage and do a decent

:13:57. > :14:00.job, I would agree. They are terrified that, if these

:14:00. > :14:05.suggestions went through, they might be paid less to do the same

:14:05. > :14:11.job. Briefly, do you feel bad to the campaigning you have done over

:14:12. > :14:15.the years for a quality has been set back somewhat? We would like to

:14:15. > :14:21.spend some more time with Mr Davies and encourage him to understand

:14:21. > :14:27.more about mental health problems. We want to see the very strong

:14:27. > :14:37.rally inquiry but we have seen from disabled people -- the very strong

:14:37. > :14:37.

:14:37. > :14:40.Two 16-year-old boys were arrested in connection with a rape in Leeds

:14:40. > :14:46.city centre. O'Gorman was approached by a group of men while

:14:46. > :14:50.waiting for a bus, she was attacked on Fish Street. -- A woman was

:14:50. > :14:56.approached. Seven cars had been damaged in a

:14:56. > :15:00.random arson attack on the same Yorkshire's Street. Angry residents

:15:00. > :15:05.on Cross Street in Royston said they woke to find vehicles ablaze,

:15:05. > :15:09.even though some were parked on the run driveways. Police say it is

:15:09. > :15:14.fortunate that there were not serious consequences of the fire

:15:14. > :15:18.spreading. This man surveys the remains of his

:15:18. > :15:23.wife's car. Earlier this morning, even though it was part well down

:15:23. > :15:28.his drive, it was one of seven cars deliberately set alight in this

:15:28. > :15:35.quiet or Royston Street. I have had their day off work because I have

:15:35. > :15:39.to sort it all out. I am really upset and gutted by it. This

:15:39. > :15:45.appears to be random and widespread. This is his car on the driveway,

:15:45. > :15:49.the next car was just beyond here, then two silver cars on the corner

:15:49. > :15:56.and then in the cul-de-sac on the corner, another three were burnt

:15:56. > :16:02.out. It got everyone on the street talking. You lost two cars? Yes.

:16:02. > :16:06.How do you feel? I feel a bit sick, actually. I feel sick knowing that

:16:07. > :16:11.the house was close to getting burnt as well. This woman's car was

:16:11. > :16:15.due for an MoT before being used on a family holiday. They were woken

:16:15. > :16:21.in the early hours by a neighbour alerting them to the fire. They

:16:21. > :16:24.must be off their heads to do something like this. Seven cars.

:16:24. > :16:30.They could have lost lives. police want help to catch the

:16:30. > :16:35.arsonist. It is a serious situation, it could have led to somebody being

:16:35. > :16:39.seriously injured or killed. I would appeal to anybody with

:16:39. > :16:43.information to contact the police. Frustratingly for the car's owners,

:16:43. > :16:48.there doesn't appear to be a motive for the attack. For them, it is a

:16:48. > :16:54.day wasted cleaning up the mess. Russell doesn't know if his wife's

:16:54. > :16:59.car will ever take to the road again.

:16:59. > :17:04.Stay with us, lots of reaction on the closure of Tetley's and also

:17:04. > :17:12.saying it with flowers. York visitor attraction that has global

:17:12. > :17:16.displays absolutely everywhere, even in bed. -- floral displays.

:17:16. > :17:22.In the studio, we cannot see if it's raining or not, but we hear

:17:22. > :17:27.that the rain is just about staying away at Headingley. It is the T20

:17:27. > :17:31.Roses match, Yorkshire versus Lancashire, Tanya is there.

:17:31. > :17:36.We are staying dry at the moment, but we are looking to the heavens.

:17:37. > :17:44.The rain was predicted at 7pm and we hope that that is wrong.

:17:44. > :17:48.Lancashire won the toss. It is all going very nicely. With me is

:17:48. > :17:52.Yorkshire's Joe Sayers, it would be very sad if the rain came, because

:17:52. > :17:57.this is a great atmosphere. Yes, this is one of the highlights of

:17:57. > :18:01.the domestic calendar. We beat our rivals at Old Trafford, hopefully

:18:01. > :18:07.we can do the same tonight. Every time the ball comes to Lancashire,

:18:07. > :18:12.they get booed to put them off. part of the occasion, difficult for

:18:12. > :18:16.them to concentrate. Yorkshire are going well, hopefully they can

:18:16. > :18:21.finish strong. How much confidence do you have getting those two tied

:18:21. > :18:24.wins? We have a great deal of confidence, we spoke about it in

:18:24. > :18:28.the dressing room, we know we have played good cricket in patches

:18:28. > :18:34.through the season. Consistency has been our aim in the last few weeks

:18:34. > :18:37.and it could be coming this way. Does the rain affect how you may go,

:18:37. > :18:41.because there are limited overs and it changes what happens? It would

:18:41. > :18:45.be in our thoughts. But as far as other players are concerned, they

:18:45. > :18:50.will get their heads down and get on with the job. Is a frustrating

:18:50. > :18:53.for you to be watching on the sidelines? I would love to be out

:18:53. > :18:57.there playing, there is a lot of cricket to be played this summer,

:18:57. > :18:59.along way to go, so hopefully I'll be there soon. Fingers crossed, we

:18:59. > :19:07.can give you we doubled to celebrate!

:19:07. > :19:10.Thank you. They move on to 151-2. It may seem like a few minutes ago

:19:10. > :19:15.that the domestic football season finished but the fixtures for next

:19:15. > :19:19.season are already upon us. Let's have a look at the first eight

:19:19. > :19:24.fixtures. Leeds, Barnsley and Doncaster staff their championship

:19:24. > :19:29.campaigns with a way matches. In League One, Chesterfield are away

:19:29. > :19:34.to Tranmere and the date for Sheffield in October 15th, that is

:19:34. > :19:38.the first derby at Bramall Lane. For the full list of fixtures, go

:19:38. > :19:42.to the website. In rugby league, Featherstone and

:19:42. > :19:48.Halifax have said they will ban fans found to be making trouble

:19:48. > :19:52.after the Northern rail semi-final Cup match last night. A lot of

:19:52. > :19:57.trouble at that, fighting inside and outside the ground, it marred a

:19:57. > :20:04.great game that Halifax won 31-30 in sudden-death extra time. They

:20:04. > :20:09.will face Jewsbury -- they will face Dewsbury or Leigh on Sunday.

:20:09. > :20:13.And on Monday, another sporting event, hurried Rasham will be

:20:13. > :20:17.playing three rounds of golf at three different golf clubs. It is

:20:17. > :20:19.all for charity for the Variety Club. They are at Alwoodley,

:20:19. > :20:24.Moortown and Moor Allerton. He would be sleeping for the rest of

:20:24. > :20:32.the week! Yorkshire have moved on to one that and 58-T with a few

:20:32. > :20:37.overs remaining, hopefully the weather forecast is wrong! -- moved

:20:37. > :20:42.on to 158-2. If you ride the of flower-arranging

:20:50. > :20:56.Students at Askham Bryan College have been working on starting

:21:05. > :21:09.will stun you. Fairfax House is a refuge of George

:21:35. > :21:40.-- hundreds of balloons. There is a feast of flowers in the kitchen. We

:21:40. > :21:45.have had 20 students involved in this project and three lecturers.

:21:45. > :21:49.We have had lots of prep. The public will come and have a look at

:21:49. > :21:53.this and say, that is different. We have had comments from people in

:21:53. > :21:58.the house saying it is lovely, it is so different. Hopefully it will

:21:58. > :22:03.inspire the public. In the dining room, floral puddings looked good

:22:03. > :22:12.enough to eat. The centrepiece is designed to draw you or I up and up
