:00:03. > :00:06.Good evening, welcome to Tuesday's Look North. Tonight: rising debts -

:00:06. > :00:10.calls to crackdown on the doorstep lenders encouraging struggling

:00:10. > :00:19.families to take out loans they can't repay.

:00:19. > :00:23.Also tonight - what Yorkshire makes of the Olympic dream. We are life

:00:23. > :00:28.at the Olympic park where it has been a grand Yorkshire Day Out. We

:00:28. > :00:32.will discuss how benefits if -- businesses are benefiting from the

:00:32. > :00:37.games and we will tour the stadium. And Speeding ahead - a petrol heads

:00:37. > :00:42.paradise. The students who've designed their own racing car.

:00:42. > :00:52.Richmond was looking great today, there could be more sunshine it in

:00:52. > :00:57.

:00:57. > :01:00.The South Yorkshire MP is calling for a change in the law to stop

:01:00. > :01:06.companies from supplying loans to vulnerable people and charging

:01:06. > :01:09.interest rates of up to 4,000 %. Dan Jarvis says several of his

:01:09. > :01:14.constituents have come to him for help because they have got into

:01:14. > :01:19.financial difficulty. This woman in Barnsley knows what

:01:19. > :01:26.it is like to be targeted by doorstep lenders. She borrowed 100

:01:26. > :01:31.and pays back 150. We have protected her identity. Why did you

:01:31. > :01:36.do it? Family circumstances. It was quick and easy and there were no

:01:36. > :01:42.background checks. You could have money there and then. How did you

:01:42. > :01:46.get out of it? I paid them off and said, please do not call any more.

:01:46. > :01:54.I don't want to get into trouble. They badgered me every time I went

:01:54. > :01:57.past on the street. This is where many come for help. Credit unions

:01:57. > :02:03.like this one are seeing more and more people who have run up debts

:02:03. > :02:07.with loan companies. People get to a point whereby if a doorstep

:02:07. > :02:10.lender will not come the door. They are that desperate, they will take

:02:10. > :02:15.it. It is only afterwards that they realise what they have got

:02:15. > :02:21.themselves into. They are at the end of their tether. They don't

:02:21. > :02:27.know what to do and who to turn to. The credit union now has more than

:02:27. > :02:33.3,000 members. Around 80 % of them have borrowed money from loan firms,

:02:33. > :02:37.at rates of up to 4,000 %. Working door to door in Sheffield, this man

:02:37. > :02:43.used to offer loans to people needing cash. How did you feel

:02:43. > :02:49.about the job you're doing at the time? If it was grubby. I wasn't

:02:49. > :02:57.happy with it. I only did it for 12 months. It wasn't a pleasant job at

:02:57. > :03:01.will. I was glad to pack it in. You realise when you were doing it,

:03:01. > :03:05.that you were exploiting people. as people struggled to pay the

:03:05. > :03:13.bills, it is not hard to see how loan companies get their business.

:03:13. > :03:21.To many families, they feel they have no other option.

:03:21. > :03:25.A number of you have been getting in touch about this issue. Peter

:03:25. > :03:32.Golding said, I have had them come to my door selling their services.

:03:32. > :03:42.Last time you could get 100 pounds of high streets for edges --

:03:42. > :03:43.

:03:43. > :03:49.veggies and pay them back. -- and vouchers. Joanne says, the problem

:03:50. > :03:58.is people on low income at don't have anywhere else to go. Who else

:03:58. > :04:02.can help them at other than a loud -- loan shark?

:04:02. > :04:05.London 2012 is drawing closer and today was the day Yorkshire

:04:05. > :04:09.companies and athletes got to see behind the scenes of the Olympic

:04:09. > :04:18.Park. Tanya joins us live from there now.

:04:18. > :04:21.This of course is the Olympic stadium ready ahead of scheduling.

:04:21. > :04:29.Further round there, that is where the basketball will be played.

:04:29. > :04:33.There is that beautiful curved roof which is the feller drone. There is

:04:33. > :04:38.a huge amount of building still going on. Yorkshire has had a huge

:04:38. > :04:43.part to play in this. From the footbridge to the roads, to the

:04:43. > :04:48.steel girders, even the wild flowers that are going to be dotted

:04:48. > :04:55.around here. Yorkshire has played its part -- it's part. If they have

:04:55. > :04:59.spent quite a bit of money there. Marking the occasion and the page.

:04:59. > :05:05.An Olympic branding. These products go on sale in August and every one

:05:05. > :05:13.of them will have come from a warehouse in Pickering. Being part

:05:13. > :05:19.of it in terms of a souvenir makes us proud. The forecast for the

:05:19. > :05:23.Olympics products would mean our forecast is 20 % more next year in

:05:23. > :05:33.terms of Paul Cooke related gives the sold. There is no doubt we

:05:33. > :05:41.would have expanded. How much of the economy benefits are our art

:05:41. > :05:45.remain to be seen it. 200 contractors have been involved.

:05:45. > :05:50.Representatives from some of those firms have been given a chance to

:05:50. > :05:57.witness their work first hand. David Preston's company has

:05:57. > :06:07.transported Ovett 1,500 vehicles worth of steel to the side. -- over

:06:07. > :06:10.

:06:10. > :06:14.We have delivered steel and concrete. To see the culmination of

:06:14. > :06:22.it up in the air and ready is incredible. It is a privilege to

:06:22. > :06:27.see this. It gives me an immense sense of proud -- pride. It is hard

:06:27. > :06:31.to put a figure on how much our economy will benefit. They have

:06:31. > :06:38.spent time and money attracting local business to Yorkshire.

:06:38. > :06:43.Perhaps the best place to decide what will be a success.

:06:43. > :06:47.I caught up with the chairman of Yorkshire gold, Gary Verity, I

:06:47. > :06:54.asked him how much money did need to be generated for this to have

:06:54. > :06:59.been deemed a success? If it is difficult to put a figure on it. If

:06:59. > :07:09.you look at the success Yorkshire has had so far, if you look at the

:07:09. > :07:10.

:07:10. > :07:16.smattering of people that have been here, they have produced 80 % of

:07:16. > :07:23.the hard paving people will be standing on. 50 % of the timber has

:07:23. > :07:27.been supplied by S. There is another 450 million of business up

:07:27. > :07:31.for grabs and we need to make sure that we get some of that.

:07:31. > :07:37.How much money has been spent trying to generate the Business and

:07:37. > :07:42.teams come to the region? Generating teams has been peanuts

:07:42. > :07:46.in the great scheme of things. There are many of these businesses

:07:46. > :07:49.that you featured as had been featured in the past, who are

:07:49. > :07:57.heavily into the construction industry which has taken a big dip

:07:57. > :08:01.in the economic downturn we are in. It is -- it is clear to see what it

:08:01. > :08:06.is doing for London. Thousands will be coming here and seeing London.

:08:06. > :08:12.How does that affect Yorkshire? If they are not looking at Yorkshire.

:08:12. > :08:16.They will be because they have spent six days coming through

:08:16. > :08:23.Yorkshire. From the tourism point of view, people have a choice, if

:08:23. > :08:28.they are coming overseas, they can either stop in London with all the

:08:28. > :08:37.pluses and minuses of that, or they can come to Yorkshire. There are

:08:37. > :08:45.many benefits for us. To give you an idea of some of the things up

:08:45. > :08:50.for grabs, they want 23-27 temporary saunas. That contract is

:08:50. > :08:54.up for grabs. Join me later when we will be taking a tour of the park

:08:54. > :08:58.and going inside the stadium. A thank you for that.

:08:58. > :09:01.Let us return to our top story and the South Yorkshire MP calling for

:09:02. > :09:05.a change in the law to stop companies from supplying loans to

:09:05. > :09:10.vulnerable people and charging interest rates of up to 4,000 cent.

:09:10. > :09:15.Dan Jarvis has said his constituents have come to him for

:09:15. > :09:20.help because they have got into financial difficulty. He joins us

:09:20. > :09:26.now from Westminster. How have your constituents been affected? It has

:09:26. > :09:32.been clear that there is an issue in these difficult times, of people

:09:32. > :09:36.who have been taken advantage of by the legal loan sharks who have

:09:36. > :09:40.offered money at extortionate rates. Because of their lack of

:09:40. > :09:45.availability of affordable credit, people have fallen into the trap of

:09:45. > :09:48.taking these loans at a high rate. This has been a real issue. Tonight

:09:48. > :09:51.we have the chance to persuade the Government to do something about it.

:09:51. > :09:59.This was agreed in polymers five months ago that something would be

:09:59. > :10:05.done. That hasn't happened. -- this was agreed in Parliament. We have

:10:05. > :10:08.to regulate this market to reduce this problem. Many people will be

:10:08. > :10:18.alarmed that there are interest rates of several thousand %. That

:10:18. > :10:19.

:10:19. > :10:23.It shouldn't be legal. In these difficult times when lots of people

:10:23. > :10:26.are facing the pinch, if you do need credit, if you need to borrow

:10:26. > :10:33.money to get through these difficult times, you should take

:10:33. > :10:37.proper advice. In my constituency in Barnsley, from the South

:10:37. > :10:45.Yorkshire credit union or other unions that exist across Yorkshire.

:10:45. > :10:48.Not to take loans that are extortionate. It should not be

:10:48. > :10:51.legal and we are trying to force the Government to bring in

:10:51. > :10:57.legislation to make sure they are not able to do it in the way they

:10:57. > :11:01.are at the moment. The effects on people are incalculable. Will the

:11:01. > :11:07.Government listen and do something about this? I am not confident. We

:11:07. > :11:12.still don't know what way the Government will respond. I hope the

:11:12. > :11:15.Government will do the right thing, see sense and agree to this

:11:15. > :11:19.amendment. It is in the interests of hundreds of thousands of people

:11:19. > :11:23.across the country who have fallen into it vicious circles of debt

:11:23. > :11:27.because they have taken out these loans at extortionate rates. I

:11:27. > :11:32.don't think it is right that these companies should be able to operate

:11:32. > :11:38.in a way that they do. They shouldn't be allowed to get away

:11:38. > :11:42.with it. Thank you very much for joining us.

:11:42. > :11:45.If tonight, the parents of a soldier from Wakefield to deaden

:11:45. > :11:48.Afghanistan have collected a medal from the Queen on his behalf.

:11:48. > :11:52.Corporal Matthew Stenton was shot as he attempted to rescue another

:11:52. > :11:57.soldier. He was awarded a posthumous Military Medal for his

:11:57. > :12:03.medal -- for his bravery. The great and the good went to

:12:03. > :12:11.Buckingham Palace today to be honoured by the Queen. Unknown to

:12:11. > :12:16.them, there was an earlier ceremony, and Military Cross given to

:12:16. > :12:21.Corporal Matthew Stenton. He gave his life to his country and friend.

:12:21. > :12:31.He tried to save a wounded soldier while himself under heavy fire in

:12:31. > :12:31.

:12:31. > :12:37.Afghanistan. For his comrades, the medal and a -- the man, a sense of

:12:37. > :12:44.grief and pride. He was amazing. It is great that the country

:12:44. > :12:52.recognises the extreme act of bravery. It is immense and we are

:12:52. > :13:01.so proud of him. Matthew was buried last summer by his colleagues. A

:13:01. > :13:08.tragedy for his family. They have spoken of their pride in their son.

:13:08. > :13:15.Matthew Stenton chose to be buried here in a military ceremony among

:13:15. > :13:25.the fallen. Amongst the graves of many before him. Confirmation that

:13:25. > :13:26.

:13:26. > :13:30.The Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield welcomed its 100,000th visitor this

:13:30. > :13:32.afternoon, less than five weeks after it was officially opened. The

:13:32. > :13:35.gallery, which is the largest exhibition space outside London is

:13:35. > :13:40.home to pieces created by Dame Barbara Hepworth, and other local

:13:40. > :13:50.talent. The 35 million building has brought home some rare works

:13:50. > :13:51.

:13:51. > :13:54.from the Wakefield-born artist. Campaigners for a high speed rail

:13:54. > :13:56.link to Yorkshire have gathered in Leeds Millennium Square today. The

:13:56. > :13:59.Government has already backed a project to develop a high speed

:13:59. > :14:03.line to Birmingham. But campaigners want to make sure plans to extend

:14:03. > :14:06.the 200 mile per hour train service to Leeds are followed through. They

:14:06. > :14:13.say the economic benefits of such a service would bring millions of

:14:13. > :14:18.pounds worth of business to the region. We want to bring it to

:14:18. > :14:23.Yorkshire to close the north, south divide. We want to reduce journey

:14:23. > :14:28.times to London. We want businesses to invest in Yorkshire. I believe

:14:28. > :14:30.by closing that gap and reducing journey times, we can bring that

:14:30. > :14:34.about. Residents on an estate in

:14:34. > :14:37.Chesterfield are campaigning to have a bus service reinstated. Last

:14:37. > :14:42.month, the bus company diverted one of its services away from their

:14:42. > :14:47.homes. Instead they face an uphill walk to the closest stop, and there

:14:47. > :14:51.are fears some elderly people might now be stuck at home.

:14:51. > :15:01.Still to come: Speeding ahead. The schoolchildren who've designed

:15:01. > :15:05.

:15:05. > :15:09.Well, let's go back to the Olympic Stadium. Tanya, you're one of few

:15:09. > :15:15.people who's actually been inside. So, the burning question is, what

:15:15. > :15:21.is it like? And we were very privileged. We

:15:21. > :15:27.were allowed onto the bus! It is hard to explain. I have been in a

:15:27. > :15:33.lot of stadiums, but it had a ready nice feeling about it. It might be

:15:34. > :15:39.a strange thing to say, but it had a nice feeling to it. It is about

:15:39. > :15:46.the sport, and we were very lucky to get a tour around the whole site.

:15:46. > :15:49.It is about the size of Alton Towers. A couple of Yorkshire

:15:49. > :15:55.athlete were with us, who will hopefully be competing here next

:15:55. > :16:00.year. We had a special tour guide. The Olympic gold medallist triple-

:16:00. > :16:08.jumper Jonathan Edwards. I have been involved in this since the bid

:16:08. > :16:14.phase. We always said it was not just about two weeks of Olympic

:16:14. > :16:23.sports and a weaker Paralympic sport, it was about the country --

:16:23. > :16:33.a week of Paralympic sport. This is great, coming here. I have been so

:16:33. > :16:37.excited about this. Matin burn-out was also on board.

:16:37. > :16:42.The aquatic centre where Jack hopes to dive is one of the iconic

:16:42. > :16:48.buildings. This was as close as we got. It looks great from the

:16:48. > :16:51.outside. It looks magnificent. It would be nice to go inside. It is

:16:51. > :16:57.so much more impressive when you were here. It is bigger than I

:16:57. > :17:02.thought it was going to be. lackeys around 450 hectors, about

:17:02. > :17:07.three and a half kilometres long, and takes 20 minutes to walk from

:17:07. > :17:17.end to end. We got to stop at the Olympic Stadium and get off to take

:17:17. > :17:24.a boat aground. It is absolutely great. It is massive! Everything

:17:24. > :17:31.looks fantastic. The it is lovely! It is nerve-racking. You get goose

:17:31. > :17:37.bumps. We stared where you could be competing -- we are stowed away you

:17:37. > :17:43.could be competing. Hopefully, it will not be as hard as this. I hope

:17:43. > :17:48.above be here next year. You do tours like this regularly. Is the

:17:48. > :17:53.reaction always the same? Completely. Even that I was here

:17:53. > :18:03.three weeks ago, I get all struck. The transformation of this site is

:18:03. > :18:05.

:18:06. > :18:10.amazing. I think what has been achieved here is fantastic.

:18:10. > :18:16.still live in the north-east, not a million miles from Yorkshire. Do

:18:16. > :18:23.you feel you have to sell the games outside of London? There is a sense

:18:23. > :18:29.of people thinking, it is fantastic the UK has the game's, but what is

:18:29. > :18:32.in it for us? When I sit down with people and say this is our

:18:32. > :18:39.education programme, these are the businesses which have won contracts

:18:39. > :18:42.and this is what is happening, people think, there is a real

:18:42. > :18:50.effort to here and a will to make the benefits of the game spread

:18:50. > :18:56.beyond London. I think there is a lot to be proud of. Aalto people

:18:56. > :19:06.disappointed they missed out on tickets. Using that has dented it?

:19:06. > :19:06.

:19:06. > :19:11.People are disappointed, obviously. I understand that. The reality is

:19:11. > :19:15.that, there was only so many tickets. Many more people applied,

:19:15. > :19:18.so there was always going to be that disappointment. They will be

:19:18. > :19:22.about another million tickets released towards the end of the

:19:22. > :19:30.year. They run lots of free events, like the road cycling, that should

:19:30. > :19:34.be very good from the British perspective. When you're here,

:19:34. > :19:39.looking around, do you wish you could roll back the clock and be

:19:39. > :19:47.out there going for gold again? have never had that moment of

:19:47. > :19:52.regret, but being here and thinking what it would be like, I would love

:19:52. > :19:56.to have been competing here. It will be an experience like none

:19:56. > :20:01.other for British athletes. Again she would expect someone like me to

:20:01. > :20:04.be pretty excited by being here, but when you saw excitement from

:20:04. > :20:14.Martin Byrne lad who has competed around the world, you raided got a

:20:14. > :20:24.sense of what these games will mean. 's a Jonathan said he was awestruck.

:20:24. > :20:32.-- Jonathan said he was awestruck. They are ban on track now and most

:20:32. > :20:37.things that ahead of schedule. -- most things are ahead of Schedule.

:20:37. > :20:41.The inside of the aquatic centre is spectacular. They have kept diving

:20:41. > :20:47.boards. They are magnificent. Everything is very much going to

:20:47. > :20:54.plan. It is a very calm feeling. There is no sense they are having

:20:54. > :20:57.to rush. Thank you, Tanya. I am sure there is a sense of relief.

:20:57. > :20:59.Just one update to bring you in other sporting news. Doncaster

:20:59. > :21:02.Rovers have this evening announced the signing of defender Tommy Spurr

:21:02. > :21:04.from South Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday. The left-back,

:21:04. > :21:08.seen here scoring against Barnsley in 2010, has signed a two-year

:21:08. > :21:11.contract for an undisclosed fee. He made over 200 appearances for the

:21:11. > :21:17.Owls, and is expected to be a much needed addition to bolster Donny's

:21:17. > :21:21.defence. When I was at school, the nearest

:21:21. > :21:24.we got to motor racing was watching it on the telly. But these days,

:21:24. > :21:27.they do motor racing at school, if you're in Filey, that is. Eight

:21:27. > :21:30.young teenagers at Filey School have been working for months on

:21:30. > :21:35.their very own racing car, and they'll be taking it to compete at

:21:35. > :21:45.the Croft Race Circuit next Wednesday. Cathy Killick's been to

:21:45. > :22:01.

:22:01. > :22:06.The Filey Flyer is not your average racing car, and this is not your

:22:06. > :22:11.average track. It is a school playground. But carries been put

:22:11. > :22:21.together by this lot. 13 and 14- year-old who have given up months

:22:21. > :22:27.of Tuesday evenings. Listen, no engine noise. This baby is electric.

:22:27. > :22:32.There is no engine, just two 12 fault batteries. A favoured Pat has

:22:32. > :22:37.been getting their car to work. We thought it would take ages and ages,

:22:37. > :22:46.but we managed to get it working in the end -- my favourite part has

:22:46. > :22:51.been getting their car to work. This is what it will before, a race

:22:51. > :23:01.where it pays to be a tortoise, not a hair. We have to get as many

:23:01. > :23:09.miles in four hours as we can. I am getting a bit nervous. There is

:23:09. > :23:13.five drivers. You have to keep checking the batteries. As well as

:23:13. > :23:23.the engineering involved, the children have learned to work as an

:23:23. > :23:24.

:23:24. > :23:33.efficient pits stop team. What are the chances? Realistically, if we

:23:33. > :23:43.can stay on there for four are was, that would be superb. If they make

:23:43. > :23:44.

:23:44. > :23:54.the top three, Goodwood beckons for the Grand Final.
