:00:06. > :00:10.Thank you very much. A warm welcome to this the 153rd Great Yorkshire

:00:10. > :00:14.Show. We have got quite a few of these under our belts. I can't

:00:14. > :00:19.remember a bigger or more exciting first day. On Look North tonight:

:00:19. > :00:25.Fighting back - how Australia and China have created booming prices

:00:25. > :00:29.for Yorkshire wool. And doesn't she scrub up well? The

:00:29. > :00:33.region's farmers take time out to show off both the beauties and the

:00:33. > :00:37.beasts as entries hit an all-time high.

:00:37. > :00:41.Also tonight: We will have a round- up of the region's news and sport

:00:41. > :00:45.including celebrations for Chesterfield Football Club. We are

:00:45. > :00:51.live as the Spirites celebrate last season's Division Two Championship

:00:51. > :00:56.victory with a civic reception. It has been a fabulous first day at

:00:56. > :01:06.the Great Yorkshire Show. Will the weather be fine tomorrow? Join me

:01:06. > :01:11.

:01:11. > :01:16.I love it here. Year after year, we come, but it's always exciting. You

:01:16. > :01:21.can guarantee one thing - over the next three days there will be

:01:21. > :01:24.130,000 people who will probably share the same experience as we do.

:01:24. > :01:28.Entries have hit - well they have broken all records this year. This

:01:29. > :01:32.continues to be the biggest agricultural event in the entire

:01:32. > :01:36.country. Despite this success, it has to be

:01:36. > :01:40.said it's been a tough few years for our farmers. We have a success

:01:40. > :01:45.story for you. The price of wool is rising again and Spencer Stokes can

:01:46. > :01:48.tell us the implications of that. November 2010 and the Prince of

:01:48. > :01:54.Wales launches his campaign for wool in Bradford. It already seems

:01:54. > :01:59.to be showing signs of success. Two years ago, wool prices were at rock

:01:59. > :02:09.bottom. Shearing sheep cost more than the wool was worth. Prices

:02:09. > :02:10.

:02:10. > :02:15.have on average doubled. producers are going to be happy to

:02:15. > :02:21.receive the wool cheque and back in 2007/8 the prices were low.

:02:21. > :02:25.Hopefully, we will maintain these prices. It is not just Prince

:02:25. > :02:30.Charles' backing that has boosted the wool price. Other factors have

:02:30. > :02:37.played a part. Across the world, sheep numbers are declining. So

:02:37. > :02:40.when it comes to fleeces, demand is chasing supply. Combined with that,

:02:40. > :02:46.China's rapid industrialisation means wool is much in demand for

:02:46. > :02:53.carpets so many of these fleeces could end up in the Far East. That

:02:53. > :03:02.need for woollen products in China is helping some of wost Yorkshire's

:03:02. > :03:06.textile mills. This one -- West Yorkshire's textile mills. This one

:03:06. > :03:11.opened 175 years ago. Wool hasn't been able to market itself to the

:03:11. > :03:15.same degree as synthetic fibres. A lot of people are waking up to just

:03:15. > :03:21.how good it is. There is nothing quite as good as wool. At the

:03:21. > :03:26.bottom of the chain are the farmers. Look North filmed with Susan two

:03:26. > :03:31.years ago when wool prices were very low. She says you don't notice

:03:31. > :03:36.the extra cash. It is not that much you are jumping for joy, are you?

:03:36. > :03:41.Everything else is so expensive. To me, I have never known other things

:03:41. > :03:46.like your diesel, everything else being so high in price. Whether the

:03:46. > :03:49.wool recovery can continue will depend on a whole range of global

:03:49. > :03:59.factors. But at the Great Yorkshire Show catwalk models were doing

:03:59. > :04:00.

:04:00. > :04:06.their bit. Many dressed in clothes cut from those big fluffy fleeces.

:04:06. > :04:10.If you come down to this wonderful Showground, you will see all sorts

:04:10. > :04:15.of rural activities including the dry stone wallers and that will be

:04:15. > :04:19.ten foot high by the time they have finished. I think they are joking!

:04:19. > :04:24.Let's speak to the Show Director, Bill Cowling. Why does it continue

:04:24. > :04:29.year on year to attract record entries? I think one of the things

:04:29. > :04:33.is we stick to our rural roots. There is more to it than just

:04:33. > :04:38.farming. People who come to an agricultural show want to see some

:04:38. > :04:42.agriculture. It is not about bouncy castles and sweet stalls - there

:04:42. > :04:46.are animals? There are bouncy castles and sweet stalls! Many

:04:46. > :04:51.shows have gone by the wayside. The Great Yorkshire Show can capitalise

:04:51. > :04:56.on that? Absolutely. We have benefited from the demise of some

:04:56. > :04:59.of the other county shows. Good for us, especially in the livestock

:04:59. > :05:06.entries. Is there any chance of it getting bigger? There has been a

:05:06. > :05:11.lot of talk about moving the site. This is it? We are certain we won't

:05:11. > :05:15.move the site. We have too much invested in this site. We look at

:05:15. > :05:20.various things and making other sections slightly bigger. The

:05:20. > :05:26.Showground won't move. We have talked about record entries. What

:05:26. > :05:33.is particularly up this year - sheep, cattle? Sheep, an all-time

:05:33. > :05:38.record. Pigeons, wool fleeces... Pigeons? Coming back into fashion,

:05:38. > :05:42.are they? Obviously. What else? huge entry of horses. 12,700

:05:42. > :05:49.entries so everything is a good entry. The showjumping is on now

:05:49. > :05:54.and that's got some of the top names - John Whittaker? The horse

:05:54. > :05:59.that won the Hickstead Derby is here. It has been a wonderful first

:05:59. > :06:02.day. We have really enjoyed it. Of course, there are very significant

:06:02. > :06:06.worries for farmers in the industry. They want to know that the future

:06:06. > :06:10.is better. But they have certainly had the brightest, the biggest and

:06:10. > :06:16.the best on display as Ian White has been finding out.

:06:16. > :06:26.This is land-locked Harrogate and this is the Great Yorkshire Show

:06:26. > :06:33.

:06:33. > :06:43.When you are filming here, it is all about location, location and

:06:43. > :06:43.

:06:43. > :06:48.location which is a good job because... That is property show

:06:48. > :06:51.presenter Kirsty Allsop. She was far too busy to talk to us. There

:06:51. > :06:57.is one place I'm not keen on - the cheese hall. I don't like cheese. I

:06:57. > :07:03.don't know what is wrong with me. I'm amazed. Look what we have got

:07:03. > :07:08.here. We have a lovely Wensleydale cheese. Would you like to try some?

:07:08. > :07:15.No. I have two volunteers who are going to have a sample for me. Give

:07:15. > :07:23.it a try. You love cheese? I do. do. That is gorgeous! Thank you.

:07:23. > :07:33.What do you make of that? Spot on. Beautiful. That is the cheese done

:07:33. > :07:34.

:07:34. > :07:38.and dusted. What have other people come to see? Lambs. Sheep. It's the

:07:38. > :07:42.little traders that I enjoy most, looking at the little stalls and

:07:42. > :07:50.going around those. It is really good. We have been mostly around

:07:50. > :07:58.the sheep. Sheep and cattle. I tried one of those new two-Wheeler

:07:58. > :08:08.things... Segways! They are brilliant! Five grand! When I

:08:08. > :08:18.thought it was safe, I bump into you! I am only here to admire your

:08:18. > :08:32.

:08:32. > :08:36.Ian had a flat cap and you have a farmer's stick. I can use this for

:08:36. > :08:40.lots of interesting things. I tell you something, we have noticed that

:08:40. > :08:45.it is still very busy at this time of the evening which isn't always

:08:46. > :08:49.the case. People obviously disappear around 5.30pm but still

:08:49. > :08:52.lots of people here around and buying things as well. The big

:08:52. > :08:57.showjumping competition is still on now. One thing I have noticed,

:08:57. > :09:02.though, it's not been as warm as predicted. We need a word in ten

:09:02. > :09:06.minutes with one Paul Hudson. Let's check-up on the rest of the news

:09:06. > :09:08.now and re-join Tanya. Thank you.

:09:08. > :09:11.West Yorkshire Police have been criticised for the way they handled

:09:11. > :09:14.the hunt for a missing person. 72- year-old Camille Bowers was

:09:14. > :09:17.suffering from a psychotic disorder when she disappeared from Fieldhead

:09:17. > :09:23.Hospital in Wakefield in May last year. Officers searched her bedroom

:09:23. > :09:26.at the hospital and the garden of her home. She had broken into her

:09:26. > :09:29.house and taken an overdose but her body wasn't found until the next

:09:29. > :09:33.day. A report by the Independent Police Complaints Commission said

:09:33. > :09:37.police could have done more. The M1 Motorway was closed for two

:09:37. > :09:39.hours this morning when two lorries collided and a fire started. One of

:09:39. > :09:43.the lorries was carrying plastic crates which set alight, causing

:09:43. > :09:45.thick black smoke to spread across the road. People living near the

:09:45. > :09:48.scene of the accident, near Tankersley just south of Barnsley,

:09:48. > :09:58.were warned to stay indoors as more than 40 firefighters tackled the

:09:58. > :10:04.

:10:04. > :10:07.blaze. A three-year-old girl remains

:10:07. > :10:10.critically ill in hospital after being hit by a train near Doncaster

:10:10. > :10:13.yesterday. A 28-year-old man died in the incident between Adwick and

:10:13. > :10:18.Bentley on the East Coast Main Line. Police are investigating how they

:10:18. > :10:22.came to be on the track. A church in South Yorkshire faces a

:10:22. > :10:24.100,000 repair bill after thieves stole the lead from the roof. St

:10:24. > :10:27.Lawrence's Church in Hatfield near Doncaster is Grade-I listed but

:10:27. > :10:30.parishioners found on Sunday morning that most of the lead had

:10:30. > :10:34.been taken overnight. The church's insurance company has faced so many

:10:34. > :10:44.claims for lead theft that it has now imposed a 5,000 limit, meaning

:10:44. > :10:45.

:10:45. > :10:49.the church must find the rest of the money. We have had lots of

:10:50. > :10:53.events happening, people working so hard and it does take a lot of time

:10:53. > :10:58.to make sure this place doesn't look as if it's ever been changed.

:10:58. > :11:05.Over the years, we have had committees meeting, planning

:11:05. > :11:09.permission, faculty applications, architects on site, lots of work

:11:09. > :11:12.and this just really is so, so sickening.

:11:12. > :11:15.The Shibden Mill Inn in Halifax has been chosen as Yorkshire's

:11:15. > :11:19.Favourite Pub. More than 200 pubs were nominated across Yorkshire.

:11:19. > :11:22.They were then whittled down to 12 finalists by a panel of judges. The

:11:22. > :11:27.public then picked the 17th Century inn in the Shibden Valley as the

:11:27. > :11:29.winner. Olympic rowing champion Sir Steve

:11:29. > :11:33.Redgrave was in Barnsley today visiting the new schools that have

:11:33. > :11:35.benefited from the Building Schools for the Future programme. The five-

:11:35. > :11:40.time gold medal winner spoke to pupils at Darton College and

:11:40. > :11:48.Penistone Grammar Advanced Learning Centre. Pupils at Darton College

:11:48. > :11:51.put on a dance performance to show off their new facilities. It is

:11:51. > :11:58.really important that we cater for everybody within the school. We

:11:58. > :12:01.can't sort of fit one model fits all in some ways. You have spaces

:12:01. > :12:08.like this, it is a better environment for doing that within

:12:08. > :12:12.sport and academia. Being part of it is great seeing these things to

:12:12. > :12:16.parts of the community I didn't like when I was at school. This is

:12:16. > :12:18.fun. Children from Honley High School

:12:18. > :12:22.near Huddersfield have attempted to break a world record today by

:12:22. > :12:27.staging the largest aerobic workout. Almost 1,000 of them took part in

:12:27. > :12:30.the class led by fitness guru Rajko Radovic. They used water bottles

:12:30. > :12:35.instead of weights for the hour- long exercise. But they'll have to

:12:35. > :12:38.wait until the summer holidays to find out if they broke the record.

:12:38. > :12:42.A school from Holmfirth has won a national competition to design a

:12:42. > :12:44.meal for athletes at the 2012 Olympics. Year 2 at Helme Primary

:12:44. > :12:49.created a cauliflower and chickpea curry inspired by Ethiopian

:12:49. > :12:59.marathon runner Haile Gebresellasie. They won their prize at a

:12:59. > :13:02.Masterchef-style cook-off held in London earlier today. On to

:13:02. > :13:06.cricket: Yorkshire are in a fantastic position against

:13:06. > :13:11.Worcestershire. A great tenth wicket partnership between Ajmal

:13:11. > :13:21.Shahzad and Ryan Sidebottom gave them a big first innings lead.

:13:21. > :13:29.

:13:29. > :13:31.It's been a party that's been a long time coming! It seems an age

:13:31. > :13:35.since the end of the football season when Chesterfield's status

:13:35. > :13:38.as League Two Champions was confirmed. It's not too long before

:13:38. > :13:44.they start playing in League One, but the promotion party is being

:13:44. > :13:50.staged tonight in the town. Tom Ingall is at the town hall now. I'm

:13:50. > :13:53.very jealous. You should be. The party is in full flow. Take a look

:13:53. > :13:56.at the crowd here in front of the town hall. There must be a couple

:13:56. > :14:02.of thousand people here. I have been trying to work out when the

:14:02. > :14:10.last time we had a do like this in Chesterfield - probably the 1997

:14:10. > :14:15.semifinal Cup run. Joining me now is the Mayor. It must have given

:14:15. > :14:21.such a boost to the town to get the team into League One? It really has.

:14:21. > :14:26.So many people have turned out and they are the supporters. The amount

:14:26. > :14:30.of response that they have given to the new ground, the attendances

:14:31. > :14:38.have doubled, the season ticket holders so they have responded in

:14:38. > :14:41.every way. We have a terrific team and management. We have a fantastic

:14:41. > :14:46.new stadium. It looks like a great night and the fans have responded

:14:46. > :14:49.to the incompetent vestment in the club. John, can we bring you in.

:14:49. > :14:56.Terrific achievement. Not many weeks now till you start playing in

:14:56. > :15:00.League One. What are your plans for next season? We are expect a tough

:15:00. > :15:03.league. There are some excellent games for us. We are looking

:15:03. > :15:07.forward to it. We will enjoy tonight. But we know we are going

:15:07. > :15:15.to have a very hard season ahead. There are no transfer signings you

:15:15. > :15:21.want to drop in for us now? No, no. Any cards up your sleeves? I am

:15:21. > :15:26.trying to bring three or four players in. I'm looking forward to

:15:26. > :15:31.the season. What do you think your chances are of still being in

:15:31. > :15:34.League One or the play-offs? We are going to try to get out of the

:15:34. > :15:38.division. I hope we compete and we believe in ourselves. The club is

:15:38. > :15:43.going places. We want to do well in the division. Good luck. Thank you

:15:43. > :15:48.for joining us. Thank you, Peter. We will let you get back and enjoy

:15:48. > :15:51.the party because it will be a great night in Chesterfield. Thank

:15:51. > :15:59.you very much. Well, that's it from me for the

:15:59. > :16:04.moment. Now, back to Harry and Christa at the Great Yorkshire Show.

:16:04. > :16:10.Thank you very much. I can tell you it is still busy. Have a look at

:16:10. > :16:14.the people who are here to see Harry! Welcome to the Great

:16:14. > :16:19.Yorkshire Show. Are you all alive? Yes! Are you enjoying yourself?

:16:19. > :16:26.Very much so. What has been the best part? Rural crafts. Anybody

:16:26. > :16:32.else got something to add? I do. The Army centre. That was the best

:16:32. > :16:38.part. Well done. The best! I tell you what, I have a little bit of a

:16:38. > :16:43.favourite to show you now. This is what they call pole-climbing. The

:16:43. > :16:53.experts, Richard and Terry, will do it in 15 seconds. Take it away,

:16:53. > :17:02.

:17:02. > :17:06.lads. We are counting. They are We will call that a draw! That was

:17:06. > :17:12.incredible! APPLAUSE Well done. In a moment, Harry will have a go! No,

:17:12. > :17:16.he's not! One thing people have been worried about - bees. You love

:17:16. > :17:21.your honey? The good weather in the spring has meant that the parasite

:17:21. > :17:28.which has been affecting hives and honey production has not had a

:17:28. > :17:37.devastating impact this year. I've been to Hoyland near Barnsley to

:17:37. > :17:42.take a look. This is like a hidden garden. It is a nice quiet place

:17:42. > :17:48.and a pleasant place to keep bees. If you puff a bit of smoke on them,

:17:48. > :17:56.it subdues them. So they won't get me? Hopefully not! We will see.

:17:56. > :18:01.Let's have a look. This is a new queen this year. A nice gentle

:18:01. > :18:05.strain of bee. They will forage within a three-mile radius. They

:18:05. > :18:09.have had a busy day? They are not going that far today because the

:18:09. > :18:14.nectar source is much needer. If they need to go 50 yards, they will

:18:14. > :18:19.go 50 yards. This one you are worried about? Yes. If you look at

:18:19. > :18:25.this one compared to these two that we have just looked at, this is

:18:25. > :18:32.obviously understrength. Do you like honey? I do. I eat it every

:18:33. > :18:39.day. Every day. By the spoonful? have it on cereals or on me toast.

:18:39. > :18:44.I eat quite a lot during the summer, little pieces of corn, off-cuts.

:18:44. > :18:50.How much bees have you got? Well, there's what, how many hives down

:18:50. > :18:58.there? Ten, 15, so - some of these bigger ones will contain 70,000

:18:58. > :19:03.bees. I'm not going to add it up. You can do the maths! A lot. I

:19:03. > :19:08.really loved it. We have Michael Badger, the bee steward. That is

:19:08. > :19:15.correct, isn't it? I was listening to you. I can say having spent that

:19:15. > :19:21.day with Phil, I really want a hive of bees. They sting! I know. You

:19:21. > :19:31.haven't seen it - I had the full works on! You brought me a present?

:19:31. > :19:35.Yes. Mead made from Yorkshire bees. There is a ditty on the back.

:19:35. > :19:42.According to the surgeon - I don't think we will do that! Seriously,

:19:42. > :19:48.it was a problem, wasn't it? We were worried about the bees? It is

:19:48. > :19:53.a problem. Science has overcome it. Nature will always have its revenge.

:19:53. > :20:02.But science will come back again and again and it has done and a lot

:20:02. > :20:06.of it is really to do with the fact that stockmanship, beekeepers have

:20:06. > :20:11.bees and they think they can manage them on their own. When they are in

:20:11. > :20:16.the wild, they are different. was saying you have to eliminate

:20:16. > :20:21.the weak hive. I was getting it. Honestly, I have got the alcoholic

:20:21. > :20:27.Beveridge so I suppose I should give Harry the honey! Thank you.

:20:27. > :20:33.Let me tell you about this. This is special. Because this is Heather

:20:33. > :20:40.honey and this is far better than other honey. It has a higher

:20:40. > :20:44.protein level. It is from Whitby. Very nice. Over the years, we have

:20:44. > :20:49.had a tradition to try and beat the traffic. I have been here on a bike,

:20:49. > :20:58.last year I shared a caravan with someone. So what did I do this

:20:58. > :21:00.year? I came here last night for a new adventure.

:21:00. > :21:09.A relaxing day at the Great Yorkshire Show. Now to find

:21:10. > :21:16.somewhere nice to camp. The young farmers' enclosure, that is my kind

:21:16. > :21:26.of place. Here we go! CHEERING Just what I need, a nice

:21:26. > :21:41.

:21:41. > :21:51.You have got it the wrong way round! Do you want a mallet to put

:21:51. > :21:52.

:21:52. > :22:02.your thing, to put your pegs in! Please. LAUGHTER Go on! Hop in

:22:02. > :22:15.

:22:16. > :22:20.Good night! I get all the good jobs. I have the mead and we have a young

:22:20. > :22:28.budding chef from Wakefield who has brought us some traditional

:22:28. > :22:37.Yorkshire fayre. What is this? tea-smoked pigeon. Yorkshire tea?

:22:38. > :22:43.Yes. Mmm. The sauce is a Pontefract cake sauce. Then some beetroot. It

:22:43. > :22:49.is all from Pontefract. It's a very local plate. When I was a kid we

:22:49. > :22:57.used to chew on these. I love liquorice sticks. Yorkshire produce,

:22:57. > :23:00.it is the best in the country. course it is. I have always had a

:23:01. > :23:03.strong passion for Yorkshire produce, it is very important. My

:23:03. > :23:07.restaurant menus are based on Yorkshire food. That is very

:23:07. > :23:11.important to us. Do you think people are becoming more and more

:23:12. > :23:15.interested in where their food is coming from? Certainly. Yes. As

:23:15. > :23:19.chefs, we look at our menu... ordinary members of the public seem

:23:19. > :23:24.to care? They want to see on the menu where the food has come from.

:23:24. > :23:28.They want to know what farm the meat has come from. They want to

:23:28. > :23:33.know it is local, in terms of the food miles as well as the quality.

:23:33. > :23:36.Ken was talking to us previewing the show, the president of the

:23:36. > :23:40.Great Yorkshire Show, he was saying we are going to have to pay more if

:23:40. > :23:45.we want the quality of good strong local produce. You would echo that?

:23:45. > :23:51.Certainly. You get what you pay for. I will start... That is tough! This

:23:51. > :23:55.will take me a while. I will hand to Harry who is somewhere in the

:23:55. > :24:03.crowd. I wanted to introduce the best

:24:03. > :24:07.forecaster in the country. Do you agree? Yes! Are you all mad?!

:24:07. > :24:12.LAUGHTER I can tell you he has a great forecast. That lady said "no".

:24:12. > :24:15.Can we have words afterwards?! We did say a 20% chance of a shower.

:24:15. > :24:18.did say a 20% chance of a shower. It will be more of the same

:24:18. > :24:23.tomorrow. It has been a nice day here. When the cloud comes over, it

:24:23. > :24:26.is a bit on the cool side. After all, this is the great British

:24:26. > :24:30.summer. Let's look at the Great Yorkshire Show forecast for

:24:30. > :24:35.tomorrow and for Thursday. Again, it's predominantly dry. There will

:24:35. > :24:38.be quite a bit of cloud tomorrow. The nicest day from a warmth point

:24:38. > :24:43.of view will be Thursday. Thursday afternoon, we could see

:24:43. > :24:46.temperatures around 21 Celsius. That is 70 Fahrenheit. That is the

:24:46. > :24:50.Great Yorkshire Show forecast. As regards the evening forecast, if we

:24:50. > :24:54.run that graphic sequence, we will see that there is quite a bit of

:24:54. > :25:00.cloud on there. There is still a risk of one or two light showers

:25:00. > :25:09.around. I think the cloud should tend to break up in western areas.

:25:09. > :25:13.Temperatures will fall to 9 or 0 Celsius. -- 9 or 10 Celsius.

:25:14. > :25:20.Tomorrow morning, it will be a bright start in the west. The cloud

:25:20. > :25:25.will build from the word go. That will filter westwards so it ask a -

:25:25. > :25:30.- so it is a day of variable amounts of cloud. In the breeze, it

:25:30. > :25:34.will feel fairly cool along the coast. Inland, with a bit of

:25:34. > :25:39.brightness, up to 18 Celsius. So, for the further outlook, Thursday

:25:39. > :25:42.looks a fine and increasingly warm day. Breezy at first but the winds

:25:42. > :25:49.should ease during the afternoon. With some sunshine, temperatures

:25:49. > :25:53.will reach 21. The message is enjoy this predominantly dry weather if

:25:53. > :25:58.you can because on Friday it will cloud over, a risk of showers later

:25:58. > :26:02.in the day. That sets us up for a very unsettled weekend with showers

:26:02. > :26:08.possibly merging to give longer spells of rain and that could open

:26:08. > :26:15.the window to a very unsettled second half of July so enjoy the

:26:15. > :26:20.next couple of days. That is it from me. What do you think of it so

:26:20. > :26:26.far? Rubbish! That is a well- trained crowd! Try this cheese.

:26:26. > :26:30.This is award-winning first in show Wensleydale. It is stunning. We

:26:30. > :26:34.have saved you some wood pigeon. Looking forward to that. I have to
