:00:03. > :00:06.Welcome to Friday's Look North. On the programme tonight: The growing

:00:06. > :00:11.problem of post traumatic stress among soldiers and the domestic

:00:11. > :00:19.violence it causes. This is what one former soldier did to his home.

:00:19. > :00:24.He also attacked his wife but she's standing by him.

:00:24. > :00:29.Seeing children blown up, but must be enough to get to anybody. We

:00:29. > :00:33.have got a long struggle ahead of us, but he has given me so much.

:00:33. > :00:39.I'm not prepared to give up on him now.

:00:39. > :00:42.Also tonight: Tickets, please, but at a price. The biggest fare

:00:42. > :00:45.increases in the country. The price of train tickets is going up by 10%

:00:45. > :00:47.in West Yorkshire. And is this a new version of a

:00:47. > :00:56.motorcycle display team? The mobility scooter riders performing

:00:56. > :01:06.in Scarborough. It has been a beautiful day today. It will be a

:01:06. > :01:09.

:01:09. > :01:13.very different picture tomorrow. I And we'll be looking ahead to a

:01:13. > :01:15.busy weekend of sport with the new football season kicking off. And

:01:15. > :01:23.who'll make it to Wembley as Castleford face Leeds in the

:01:23. > :01:27.challenge cup semi-final? First, is enough being done to help

:01:27. > :01:32.soldiers traumatised by their time in battle when they get home?

:01:32. > :01:37.Adams was attacked by her husband Dave after he had served in Iraq.

:01:37. > :01:42.One night, he caused 35,000 worth of damage to their home in Bedale

:01:42. > :01:47.in North Yorkshire. Recent studies suggest domestic violence by former

:01:47. > :01:56.soldiers is increasing. First, Linda's story. She says those

:01:56. > :02:02.returning from duty need more help. He went to Iraq in 2003, came back

:02:02. > :02:11.in 2004. September of that year, we were due to go out with friends,

:02:11. > :02:18.and when I returned, he told me I could not go home. The police had

:02:18. > :02:28.been cold -- called. Basically, he had obliterated our home. On

:02:28. > :02:29.

:02:30. > :02:39.Christmas Eve, he actually got physical with me and punched me. I

:02:39. > :02:44.had facial damage, teeth knocked out. It was a shock. The thing is,

:02:44. > :02:47.I didn't hit him back. I didn't throw anything, I didn't go for him,

:02:47. > :02:55.I just looked him straight in the face and said, you should not have

:02:55. > :03:02.done that. I turned my back and walked away. I have rarely just

:03:02. > :03:08.recently in the last demands found out some of the things he saw.

:03:08. > :03:18.Seeing children blown up, that must be enough to get to anybody.

:03:18. > :03:19.

:03:19. > :03:25.Whether you're a soft or hard like army personnel. I don't think

:03:25. > :03:29.psychiatrists understood what was wrong. Every time there has been an

:03:29. > :03:36.incident and there had to call the police and have been taken away, it

:03:36. > :03:41.has been hard to. But on the end of every statement, I have always put,

:03:41. > :03:46.it is not punishment that he needs, it is mental help. We have got a

:03:46. > :03:52.long struggle ahead of us, but he has given me so much in the past.

:03:52. > :03:57.I'm not prepared to back down or give up on him now. That was

:03:57. > :03:59.Linda's experience and she is not alone. According to the National

:03:59. > :04:04.Association of Probation Officers, more than 8,000 members or former

:04:04. > :04:12.members of the military are in prison now. A further 3,500 are on

:04:12. > :04:15.probation or parole and over half of veterans given community service

:04:15. > :04:20.cover from post-traumatic stress disorder. Of those, the most common

:04:20. > :04:22.conviction was bought domestic violence. Chris Cannich -- Chris

:04:22. > :04:25.Cunningham from the Royal British Legion says psychological problems

:04:25. > :04:32.among ex-service people are becoming more and more common.

:04:32. > :04:35.are seeing more people coming to us with complex needs now. Those needs

:04:35. > :04:40.after navigated by psychological problems, things like sleep

:04:40. > :04:45.disorder, alcohol and drug dependency, anxiety or depression.

:04:45. > :04:49.We're also seeing increasing numbers of people who were showing

:04:49. > :04:56.signs of poster -- post-traumatic stress disorder. And that can be

:04:56. > :05:01.used afterwards -- years afterwards, before they come to you for help?

:05:01. > :05:06.Yes, one of the recommendations that has looked into mental health

:05:06. > :05:11.with veterans was that they should have screen -- screening one there

:05:11. > :05:15.are still in service. In many cases, sentence might not manifest

:05:15. > :05:19.themselves until 10 or 15 years later. Linda is not on her own, she

:05:19. > :05:24.might feel that she is on her own, but thousands of people, those

:05:24. > :05:28.statistics are shocking about people in prison, on probation or

:05:28. > :05:34.having community service orders. Yes, but I would say it is not a

:05:34. > :05:39.disproportionate number. We're seeing veterans that a homeless, in

:05:39. > :05:45.prison, we don't think that is a desperate Porter and --

:05:45. > :05:50.disproportionate number. It is very easy to spot a physical problem but

:05:50. > :05:55.much less simple to spot a psychological problem, and for that

:05:55. > :06:00.individual to know where to turn for help.

:06:00. > :06:03.We have learned that Rel passengers in and around West Yorkshire are

:06:03. > :06:08.facing the biggest fare increases in Britain next year. Ticket prices

:06:08. > :06:13.will go up by 10 %. Metro, the county's Transport Authority, is

:06:13. > :06:20.now in urgent talks with the government. Tonight, union and rail

:06:20. > :06:23.passenger groups told us they are planning protests later this month.

:06:23. > :06:30.West Yorkshire has become an overcrowding blackspot. There are

:06:30. > :06:33.not enough carriages to go around. In August, this train on the

:06:33. > :06:37.Barnsley nine is full. But now there is a scheme to bring in six

:06:37. > :06:44.extra trains which means be 10 % fare hike. It is no surprise

:06:44. > :06:50.passengers are angry. Awful. It is not a good service. Not pleased

:06:50. > :06:53.about that at all. It is disgusting. I don't think the current fares are

:06:53. > :06:59.justified, certainly not on this route. You don't get value for

:06:59. > :07:02.money. What has gone wrong? Rail fares are governed by the Retail

:07:02. > :07:06.Prices Index. That is currently showing five % inflation, the

:07:06. > :07:14.figure that will be used to set next year's where there's. The

:07:14. > :07:19.government says fares will rise by retail price index times three. But

:07:19. > :07:25.in West Yorkshire, there is another two % on top of that. That gives a

:07:25. > :07:29.grand total of 10 %. The bad news doesn't end there. There are now no

:07:29. > :07:33.spare diesel comedic -- commuter trains at any price, so passengers

:07:33. > :07:38.will have to be forced to put up with the 25-year-old where boss

:07:38. > :07:48.trains for the foreseeable future. There are long past their sell-by

:07:48. > :07:52.date. Higher and higher ticket prices are making commuters angry.

:07:52. > :07:55.Talks are now being had with the government. We don't think is

:07:55. > :07:59.appropriate in West Yorkshire. If there is going to be investment, we

:07:59. > :08:04.want a fair share of that in West Yorkshire. Others say commuters

:08:04. > :08:09.should not be too surprised at the increase. West Yorkshire has

:08:09. > :08:11.enjoyed lower fares than other parts of the country. So 10 % of

:08:11. > :08:18.what they're currently playing is a lot less than the people in the

:08:18. > :08:22.south-east of England. There is a protest being planned later this

:08:22. > :08:27.month, another sign that many commuters are reaching the end of

:08:27. > :08:32.their patients. Stay with us: We dine out with a

:08:32. > :08:40.difference. The restaurant giving a helping hand to those otherwise

:08:40. > :08:43.unable to get a job. Maternity services at the Yorkshire

:08:43. > :08:47.hospital are being examined again after a cluster of seven serious

:08:47. > :08:51.incidents in just four months. In June, a coroner criticised aspects

:08:51. > :09:01.of care at Dewsbury Hospital after the death of a newborn boy. Now

:09:01. > :09:04.management are considering an improvement planned after...

:09:04. > :09:09.Between last November and this debris, there were seven untoward

:09:09. > :09:14.incidents there. Something where there is a risk of harm or death to

:09:14. > :09:18.a patient. We don't know what those seven incidents involved, but we

:09:18. > :09:22.don't know if there were any death involved will stop prior to that,

:09:22. > :09:27.the hospital had shed -- set up its own independent review because of

:09:27. > :09:32.what was going on in the maternity unit here. Last summer, that

:09:32. > :09:36.involved Oliver Schofield. He survived for just 42 minutes after

:09:36. > :09:40.a 60 one-hour delay in his delivery. At his inquest, the coroner said

:09:40. > :09:43.that delay materially contributed to his death and he called

:09:43. > :09:47.improvements. That was obviously it echoed by Oliver's parents who said

:09:47. > :09:53.they did not want anybody else to share the ordeal that they had gone

:09:53. > :10:01.through. Does up Jews we have will have more problems than others?

:10:01. > :10:05.There is a history of problems here. -- Dewsbury Hospital. Staff signed

:10:05. > :10:08.a letter of no confidence in management because there were staff

:10:08. > :10:14.shortages and thickness and babies were being transferred to ponder

:10:14. > :10:17.fact, 18 miles away. In 2007, another expert was called in to

:10:17. > :10:22.look at maternity services. But put this into context, there is a

:10:22. > :10:26.national shortage of midwives. There is a rise in birthrate. There

:10:27. > :10:31.are all the mothers, more complex berths, and that has given a rise

:10:31. > :10:34.to increase in complaints. Hospitals but once would have kept

:10:34. > :10:39.these things quiet and out encouraged to share what is going

:10:39. > :10:43.on so the best practice can be learned from. And the best hospital

:10:43. > :10:46.say they are not complacent about patient care. They have developed

:10:46. > :10:52.an improvement plan to learn from this review. In their statement,

:10:52. > :10:59.they say, immediate action is always taken following adverse

:10:59. > :11:04.incidents. We are re-examining the way we provide training.

:11:04. > :11:09.The widow of a Royal Marine from Dewsbury killed in Afghanistan was

:11:09. > :11:13.-- today criticised the inquest system as unnecessarily dramatic.

:11:13. > :11:19.Corporal Stephen Curley was killed 18 months ago it in Afghanistan by

:11:19. > :11:26.Taliban bomb which was specially made it to deceive metal detectors.

:11:26. > :11:29.The coroner said that further evidence needs to be gathered.

:11:29. > :11:36.A 61-year-old woman has been seriously hurt in an attack by a

:11:36. > :11:39.bull terrier dog in Bradford. Linda Woodall suffered injuries to her

:11:39. > :11:44.arms and then as now in a stable condition in hospital. Police have

:11:44. > :11:49.seized the dog. The decision to sell off parts of

:11:49. > :11:56.York's largest car park will have to be looked at again despite large

:11:56. > :11:59.protests. Councillors voted in favour to expand York St John

:11:59. > :12:03.University on to the Union Terrace car park. A series of new options

:12:03. > :12:06.will now be put forward for consultation. At least some coach

:12:06. > :12:09.parking will remain on the very sight.

:12:09. > :12:13.Lives for be lost because of cuts at a fire station in south

:12:13. > :12:17.Yorkshire and that is according to the firefighters Union. The union

:12:17. > :12:23.says plans to merge a specialist team with the actual fire crew at

:12:23. > :12:28.Dearne Valley will leave the area without full-time cover.

:12:28. > :12:31.Training for the next call-out to save someone in difficulty. The

:12:31. > :12:36.technical rescue unit is based at Dearne Valley fire station which

:12:36. > :12:39.only opened last October. Now the fire service want to merge the

:12:39. > :12:45.specialist team with the regular crew best here. If this proposal

:12:45. > :12:49.goes ahead, but is a direct cut to posts which means slower response

:12:49. > :12:52.times which will inevitably cost lives. We know we'll end of

:12:52. > :12:56.recording nationally. At the end of the day, when poor enough be

:12:56. > :13:00.enough? We need a fire service that will provide a proper cover for

:13:00. > :13:10.people. By merging the two groups of personnel at Dearne Valley come

:13:10. > :13:14.we can provide a similar response but at less cost. It will save 500

:13:14. > :13:18.worth of public money. If they get called out of the area

:13:18. > :13:26.to a specialist job, they will not be able to respond to a routine

:13:26. > :13:31.call-out. It has left people here concerned. Saving lives is better

:13:31. > :13:41.than saving money. It is disgusting. We need more emergency services,

:13:41. > :13:43.

:13:43. > :13:46.not less. It doesn't bear thinking about. What is next? The Fire

:13:46. > :13:50.Service say they will maintain cover by bringing in crews from

:13:50. > :13:59.other areas. They say that with reduced government funding,

:13:59. > :14:04.I have never made any secret of the fact that I love my food. Tonight

:14:04. > :14:08.is the opening night of the -- a new restaurant. It is called Create,

:14:08. > :14:12.and it looks and feels like anywhere else. Because the staff

:14:12. > :14:16.who are very different. Working alongside the professionals

:14:16. > :14:22.are people who have taken the wrong path in life. Time sleeping rough,

:14:22. > :14:28.drugs problems, trouble with the law. Given a second chance.

:14:28. > :14:33.On the surface, it looks like any other restaurant opening. Tables,

:14:33. > :14:38.chefs, nervous waiters. But as they prepare for their first proper

:14:38. > :14:44.service, the staff at Create have more than just nerves to contend

:14:44. > :14:51.with. My mum passed away last year, and I started going down the wrong

:14:51. > :14:58.route. I got into trouble with the police, things like that. I could

:14:58. > :15:04.be dead from drugs. But Ken's life has taken a very different part.

:15:04. > :15:08.She is now a trainee at Create. Everybody support everybody. You

:15:08. > :15:13.are just one big family. When you have got that much love and support,

:15:13. > :15:17.you do not need anything else. just a couple of years, they have

:15:17. > :15:23.held hundreds of people. Anyone from ex-prisoners to homeless

:15:23. > :15:28.people to asylum-seekers. I was going around with the wrong crowd.

:15:28. > :15:33.I got community service. The Create got me on board, how to be to get

:15:33. > :15:38.through it. As the other side, a full-time job as the restaurant.

:15:38. > :15:43.But this is not a charity. He got the position on merit, and will be

:15:43. > :15:47.working with experience restaurant staff. We have to be as good as

:15:47. > :15:52.another restaurant, otherwise there's no point in existing. So we

:15:52. > :15:56.are as good as another restaurant, you get the same field but even

:15:56. > :16:00.better because you can feel good about the money you are spending,

:16:00. > :16:05.and you are being served by people who wants to be here. It is that

:16:05. > :16:12.ethos that will hopefully feel a dramatic expansion. Last year,

:16:12. > :16:17.Create grew by nearly 70%. We want to remove the barriers to getting

:16:17. > :16:20.back to work. Those people that are furthest from the jobs market, we

:16:20. > :16:25.want to educate people as to what this group of people can amount to

:16:25. > :16:29.where they are given a hand up and not a hand down. But in the end,

:16:29. > :16:33.success or failure depends on getting paying customers through

:16:33. > :16:42.the door. They hope it is their food, as well as their message,

:16:42. > :16:47.that will do it. We will try that, you can pay!

:16:47. > :16:51.Challenging times ahead, Castleford and Leeds scrum for a place in the

:16:51. > :16:55.Challenge Cup final. And you are never too old to

:16:55. > :17:04.perform for charity. The former Royal Marine commandos still able

:17:05. > :17:14.to put on a display. On the off-chance it has escaped

:17:15. > :17:15.

:17:15. > :17:20.you, it is back. He is ready for the new football season. Absolutely.

:17:20. > :17:24.All week we have been looking ahead to how the clubs might fare, and

:17:24. > :17:27.this time around it is the turn of our Championship sides. Leeds

:17:27. > :17:37.United will be surely hoping to make the play-offs, while Barnsley

:17:37. > :17:45.

:17:45. > :17:49.and Doncaster are fancied by the It was like watching Barcelona, the

:17:49. > :17:54.way Barnsley kept hold of the ball in this pre-season friendly against

:17:54. > :17:59.Sheffield Wednesday. 17 passes lead-up to this goal, so many that

:17:59. > :18:03.we have had to speed it up. Barnsley fans looked sure to be

:18:04. > :18:08.entertained by new manager Keith Hill's pure football. But will they

:18:08. > :18:12.be saved in the Championship? hoping not to be relegated. Have we

:18:12. > :18:19.can stay up, we can push for the top league. Where a small club, but

:18:19. > :18:23.we would like to be in the Championship. Joint-favourites with

:18:23. > :18:28.Barnsley to get relegated, R Doncaster Rovers. If this club is

:18:28. > :18:33.under pressure, it does not show it. The bookies have consistently got

:18:33. > :18:38.it wrong with us. I remember the last time we were favourites to go

:18:38. > :18:43.down, and we won the League that year. On that basis, we will have a

:18:43. > :18:47.great season! What about Leeds United? Playing

:18:47. > :18:54.here in black, they only just missed out on the play-offs last

:18:54. > :18:59.season. Michael Brown has joined. He looks up for the fight. Simon

:18:59. > :19:04.Grayson has lost four first-team make -- four first team players,

:19:04. > :19:10.and fans have mixed feelings about the new season. I think we could be

:19:10. > :19:14.struggling to stay top half. I think Ken Bates is to get his hand

:19:15. > :19:19.in his pocket. I think we all make the play-offs. We have a good squad.

:19:19. > :19:26.No problem. It just like Barnsley and Doncaster, Leeds will have to

:19:26. > :19:31.defy the odds to get what they want out of the season.

:19:31. > :19:36.You cannot follow all the ups and downs of your team on your BBC

:19:36. > :19:40.local radio station. You are going to ask who is going to go up and

:19:40. > :19:45.don't -- down aren't you? The one team we both agree on is

:19:46. > :19:51.Huddersfield in League One. They were very unlucky last season. A

:19:51. > :19:56.very good squad, fingers crossed for them. The two Sheffield teams?

:19:56. > :20:03.Sheffield Wednesday are desperate to bring in more players. I have to

:20:03. > :20:13.say, I cannot see us getting a Premier League club. Neither can I.

:20:13. > :20:13.

:20:13. > :20:17.The Bradford City in lead to our young team. We should be positive!

:20:17. > :20:22.Hopefully! It is fair to say that there were

:20:22. > :20:26.excellent batting conditions at the Rose Bowl, where Yorkshire drew

:20:26. > :20:31.their county Jadeja match with Hampshire. Yorkshire got 532 in

:20:31. > :20:36.their first innings, the For -- the home side got 599-3 declared in

:20:36. > :20:44.theirs, Michael Carberry ending with 300, McKenzie lagging behind

:20:44. > :20:49.on a near 237! Yorkshire were 40-0 before they called it quits.

:20:49. > :20:53.Well done to Jonny Bairstow who got a century for England Lions again

:20:53. > :20:57.Sri Lanka A at Scarborough. We can already be sure of the

:20:57. > :21:01.Yorkshire presence in this year's Challenge Cup final. That is

:21:01. > :21:05.because Castleford and Leeds face each other for the right to play at

:21:05. > :21:08.Wembley. And although the rivalry goes back years, you would not have

:21:08. > :21:12.thought it from the build up this week.

:21:12. > :21:18.Respect, friendship and a warm welcome for your opponents, before

:21:18. > :21:22.you get among them. Rugby league in a nutshell, really. Even on their

:21:22. > :21:26.afternoon off before the biggest match of the season, Castleford and

:21:26. > :21:31.Leeds players were still trying to get one over each other. Not try-

:21:31. > :21:37.scoring and tackling, something more akin to It's a knockout.

:21:37. > :21:41.just another pitch. You can be as friendly and respect for before and

:21:41. > :21:47.afterwards, but that is part of rugby league. What they are doing

:21:47. > :21:52.is great. They have a new ground as the way the club is moving forward

:21:52. > :21:56.is really good for Castleford and for the lead. I think we have got

:21:56. > :22:02.our work cut out. The once the serious stuff starts

:22:02. > :22:08.in Sunday's semi, a place at one of the world's most famous finals is

:22:08. > :22:15.the prize. A that is what we want to do. It would be absolutely
