:00:03. > :00:05.Welcome to Wednesday's Look North. On the programme tonight:

:00:05. > :00:10.Yorkshire escapes rioting again but there have been outbreaks of

:00:10. > :00:20.violence in Leeds and Huddersfield. Drinkers trapped in a social club

:00:20. > :00:25.fear for their lives as a gang of youths ransacked the building.

:00:25. > :00:29.This could absolutely just finish us off. We were just getting back

:00:29. > :00:33.on our feet. Whoever you are, thank you very, very much.

:00:33. > :00:36.Professional sheep rustlers target Yorkshire farms.

:00:36. > :00:46.And from Gotham to Sheffield - the caped crusader swoops into the

:00:46. > :00:46.

:00:46. > :00:52.city's arena for Batman Live. And join me for the weather. It has

:00:52. > :01:02.been rather wet, with rain at times. Warmer sunshine tomorrow. A full

:01:02. > :01:06.

:01:06. > :01:10.Hello and welcome to the programme. Yorkshire has again avoided the

:01:10. > :01:14.riots affecting many parts of England but in the last 24 hours

:01:14. > :01:19.the disorder here has become much more serious.

:01:19. > :01:26.Later we will report from a working men's club in Huddersfield way used

:01:26. > :01:32.try to force their way in. A woman was also at attacked by a gang with

:01:32. > :01:37.iron bars in Leeds. Here is what has happened to the

:01:37. > :01:45.last 24 hours. Drinkers were trapped in a club in Huddersfield,

:01:45. > :01:50.an ASDA was a tax. And in Leeds Amos was vandalised. There were no

:01:50. > :01:53.disturbances in the North Yorkshire or South Yorkshire. The police have

:01:53. > :02:03.praised community mediators for helping to avoid more copycat

:02:03. > :02:06.

:02:06. > :02:16.A man set on fire in Harehills, one incident in a night her sporadic

:02:16. > :02:17.

:02:17. > :02:25.trouble in Leeds. -- a banner. This woman at's car was attacked while

:02:25. > :02:31.she set off for home in York. cannot remember what I was thinking.

:02:31. > :02:38.On my friend told me to put my foot down and drive. A second group came

:02:38. > :02:45.out but when they saw the pick up speed they it went away.

:02:45. > :02:51.She was a victim as an outrageous of a plot by thugs here. She says

:02:51. > :02:57.of they were moving road close to signs to persuade drivers to go

:02:57. > :03:01.into sight streets to attack them. I have no doubts that they were

:03:01. > :03:05.children and kits. Before I could register what was happening, I

:03:05. > :03:12.thought it was drunk kits on a Tuesday night. There is no doubt in

:03:12. > :03:18.my mind that they were not adults. Meanwhile, in Chapeltown, a gang

:03:18. > :03:23.attacked cars and a mosque. This car was pushed, driverless, through

:03:23. > :03:30.a wall towards a house. They took off the handbrake and

:03:30. > :03:37.moved its through this wall here. They were 16 or 17 years old.

:03:37. > :03:43.how many were there? About 10. It was very frightening. I was really

:03:43. > :03:48.shaking. I went to bed hoping nothing would happen. A few yards

:03:48. > :03:56.down the road where the mosque and education centre where attacks, 100

:03:56. > :03:59.people were in sight at the time at prayer. I came out and there were

:03:59. > :04:03.about 30 youths with bricks. They were throwing them through the

:04:03. > :04:09.windows. They took the front windows out and then went around

:04:09. > :04:15.the back. The hall was full of glass and massive bricks.

:04:15. > :04:21.They need to start this and finish with it all. It will get worse. We

:04:21. > :04:24.need to work to get out of these things. It is not right.

:04:24. > :04:30.The tonight so disturbances in Chapeltown in Leeds were sparked by

:04:30. > :04:34.the shooting of a 34 year-old man in the street. He remains

:04:34. > :04:40.critically ill. Reactionary violence has been it contained by

:04:40. > :04:44.police but it is leaving its mark on the streets of Leeds.

:04:44. > :04:48.Some years just in after that report. West Yorkshire say they

:04:48. > :04:54.have arrested two men aged 20 and 25 in connection with the shooting

:04:54. > :04:58.of Gavin Clarke in Chapeltown on Monday evening.

:04:58. > :05:03.In a few weeks' time it is the Leeds West Indian Carnival and it

:05:03. > :05:08.has been all hands on deck preparing for the big events. Last

:05:09. > :05:14.night, the people preparing to make it a huge spectacle, became

:05:14. > :05:20.attacked the two. Volunteers have had to spend the day cleaning up at

:05:20. > :05:24.their site in Chapeltown. Anna, what are we know?

:05:24. > :05:28.This still saying is very much a known for being a building open so

:05:28. > :05:33.the whole community hearing Chapeltown. You can see it looks

:05:33. > :05:39.very different this evening. Bricks were thrown through the windows and

:05:39. > :05:45.it was set alight. The first thing you notice when you walk through

:05:45. > :05:49.the door is the overwhelming smell of smoke. Through here you can see

:05:49. > :05:53.that the cleaners have done a fantastic job. The volunteers have

:05:53. > :05:59.really cleaned up but they cannot clean up the smoke damage on the

:05:59. > :06:09.walls and windows. A lot of the work made for the West Indian

:06:09. > :06:17.Carnival, particularly the costumes, have survived. Just a little - here.

:06:17. > :06:23.-- are just a little Asha on this comps junior.

:06:23. > :06:31.I got a call at 1:30am to say that the carnival building was on fire.

:06:31. > :06:38.I felt sick at and sad. I cannot understand why anyone would to it.

:06:38. > :06:43.When I came down and walked through the door, I wanted to cry. It was

:06:43. > :06:47.quite serious. There is a great deal of passion and work that goes

:06:47. > :06:52.into the carnival. A lot of people have held with the

:06:52. > :07:02.clean-up, haven't they? Yes, or so many people came to the

:07:02. > :07:03.

:07:03. > :07:07.door this morning. Over 20 people, all volunteers from the community.

:07:07. > :07:12.The city council have also been very supportive and sent some

:07:12. > :07:18.council workers to help us. Some council cleaners came in with

:07:18. > :07:23.councillors cleaning up. You would never believe the transformation to

:07:23. > :07:28.this place. Fantastic. The Leeds West Indian

:07:28. > :07:34.carnival is less than three weeks away. Preparations are continuing

:07:34. > :07:38.for that fantastic events, which brings the people of Leeds together.

:07:38. > :07:43.Following the trouble last night, six people have been arrested. A

:07:43. > :07:49.teenage girl in Wakefield has been arrested for trying to incite a

:07:49. > :07:54.riot on face but. The others arrested were from Huddersfield.

:07:54. > :08:04.Oct 30 youths surrounded a social club in the Sheepridge Beria of

:08:04. > :08:11.Huddersfield. -- of up to 30 youths. I do not understand why anyone

:08:11. > :08:14.would do this. We have put a lot of work and effort into making his

:08:14. > :08:20.place was in tears. This could finish us off.

:08:20. > :08:25.This woman helps to run the social club in Sheepridge. It is run by

:08:25. > :08:31.the community and paid for by the community. Last night, the club and

:08:32. > :08:40.the community came under siege. 30 youths barricaded the club outside

:08:40. > :08:45.with a wheelie bins. The club members inside were terrified.

:08:45. > :08:55.This morning they returned to see what had become of their club.

:08:55. > :08:55.

:08:55. > :09:04.my God! We did not know what was happening at first. It just blew up.

:09:04. > :09:09.This is what you are left with. It is just stupid. Absolutely stupid.

:09:09. > :09:12.Everyone was moving as far away as possible, out of the way of the

:09:12. > :09:16.glass. This man was playing in a pool

:09:16. > :09:20.tournament upstairs when the attacks started. He said it

:09:20. > :09:27.continued for half-an-hour. We were under siege. We were

:09:27. > :09:31.trapped. We thought they might torch the place.

:09:31. > :09:37.They threw that through the window, probably lit, hoping the place

:09:37. > :09:42.would go on fire. During the day, more people came back to take stock

:09:42. > :09:46.of what had happened and what might have been. The clean-up started

:09:46. > :09:51.with a heavy heart. The greatest fear is that the damage was done by

:09:51. > :09:54.people from within the local community. Young people who might

:09:54. > :10:04.have used the club in the past but to last night's went about

:10:04. > :10:07.

:10:07. > :10:11.destroying it. -- but last night went about destroying it.

:10:11. > :10:16.What is the answer to calming tensions for the West Yorkshire

:10:16. > :10:20.Chief Constable? It is a visible community policing.

:10:20. > :10:24.West Yorkshire police believe the hallmark of their policing in

:10:24. > :10:28.communities is the work they do one-on-one with local people. The

:10:28. > :10:33.Chief Constable visited one place in Leeds this afternoon and paid

:10:33. > :10:40.respects to the people who helped in Chapeltown only last night.

:10:40. > :10:44.have dealt with the first signs was up -- the first signs robustly. I

:10:44. > :10:48.would like to praise the Community mediators. They presented

:10:48. > :10:53.themselves and we have an ongoing relationship with them. They had

:10:53. > :10:59.been working as hard as we have in getting young people who might want

:10:59. > :11:03.to contract -- who might want to copy these events to go home.

:11:03. > :11:08.But there is real fear and the cuts to police resources make people

:11:08. > :11:11.read. The bases of neighbourhood policing

:11:11. > :11:18.is that people living in the community, working with local

:11:18. > :11:24.officers, should not at that level feel the difference. It matters so

:11:24. > :11:29.much that people are reassured and to not feel, particularly against

:11:29. > :11:34.the context of what is happening at the moment, they do not fear

:11:34. > :11:38.Absolut lawlessness. See you feel confident the you have

:11:38. > :11:42.the resources to deal with what might happen in the next 24 hours

:11:42. > :11:48.and in the future? We have fewer staff than we did

:11:48. > :11:52.have last year. The cuts do have to be making the first two years. But

:11:52. > :11:58.every person who leaves the organisation does create another

:11:58. > :12:04.challenge for me and my management changes in how we use our officers

:12:04. > :12:08.more flexibly. -- and my management team.

:12:08. > :12:13.Neighbourhood policing is the Chief Constable Paul smite blueprint. But

:12:13. > :12:23.there is affected last night, though, it is a fast response that

:12:23. > :12:26.

:12:26. > :12:33.Young gymnasts from Leeds jet off to China to represent Britain in

:12:33. > :12:36.the World Student Games. Some news is coming into us about a

:12:36. > :12:40.rescue operation under way in North Yorkshire, to free eight teenagers

:12:40. > :12:45.and three adults. They have been trapped in a cave, but we

:12:45. > :12:49.understand that the incident at Ingleton north of Settle is coming

:12:49. > :12:54.to a conclusion and that the 11 people are as we speak walking out

:12:54. > :12:57.of the cave to safety. A Yorkshire surgeon who was found

:12:57. > :13:01.guilty of dishonestly and this conduct has been sacked by

:13:02. > :13:06.Scarborough Hospital. Nayef El- Barghouty was suspended for a year

:13:06. > :13:10.by the General Medical Council last month, after he botched a series of

:13:10. > :13:13.operations leading to the death of a patient and then lied about it.

:13:13. > :13:17.He had worked at a hostel for 15 years.

:13:17. > :13:21.Police have arrested a 21-year-old man in connection with a shooting

:13:21. > :13:26.in the Park Hill area of Sheffield yesterday. A 46-year-old man was

:13:26. > :13:30.taken to hospital after being found with gunshot wounds to his leg. His

:13:30. > :13:34.condition is not life-threatening. Police believe it was a targeted

:13:34. > :13:38.attack, and they are trying to market other people connected with

:13:38. > :13:43.the incident. Test samples reveal high-level of

:13:43. > :13:46.toxins in a lake where three dogs died suddenly. The water at Burton

:13:47. > :13:51.Riggs reserve near Scarborough tested positive for blue-green

:13:51. > :13:54.algae which can kill cattle and other animals if eaten. The

:13:54. > :13:58.Yorkshire Wildlife Trust is warning people to stay out of the water and

:13:58. > :14:03.keep their dogs away. If you live in Sheffield or

:14:03. > :14:07.Chesterfield, you must have noticed that you have now joined the

:14:07. > :14:12.digital switchover. The BBC Two analogue signal was switched off at

:14:12. > :14:15.midnight last night. Viewers with Freeview will need to retune their

:14:15. > :14:20.TV's to get all BBC channels, those without digital capabilities have

:14:20. > :14:26.two weeks before the other channels are turned off. Scarborough was the

:14:26. > :14:29.first place in Yorkshire to go digital last week.

:14:29. > :14:38.If you are experienced problems, the website to go to his

:14:39. > :14:42.digitaluk.co.uk, and the helpline number is 08456 505050.

:14:42. > :14:48.Living in the country may seem endemic, but families and

:14:48. > :14:51.businesses face their own problems. Role crime went up by 70% last year,

:14:51. > :14:57.fuel and tractor thefts are the biggest problems, but life stock

:14:57. > :15:02.theft is also becoming common. Danny Carpenter has been to see one

:15:02. > :15:06.farmer near Pickering who has been the victim of sheep rustling twice.

:15:06. > :15:10.It may be a bit like locking the stable door after the horse has

:15:10. > :15:15.bolted, but Andrew Russell has to do something. He has been targeting

:15:15. > :15:20.by gangs who have stolen his sheep - twice. It was very organised.

:15:20. > :15:24.They knew what they had come for, and they knew how to get it.

:15:24. > :15:29.wrestlers used dogs to round up the sheep, they had a lorry to take

:15:29. > :15:33.them away, and some way of getting the meat illegally into the food

:15:33. > :15:37.supply. It is very distressing. Even more so now when you think

:15:37. > :15:44.about replacing them now when prices are nearly double what they

:15:44. > :15:49.were at this time last year. Stealing livestock is on the rise -

:15:49. > :15:54.a 17% increase in rural crime on last year. Insurers say they have

:15:54. > :16:00.no doubt why it is happening. economy cannot help at the moment -

:16:00. > :16:05.people are finding it difficult and those people in the industry have

:16:05. > :16:10.taken other people's property are going to say, is this a target that

:16:11. > :16:15.we could next go to? There are fine watch schemes, and police have

:16:15. > :16:23.promised greater visibility, but it is the countryside. There are many

:16:23. > :16:29.outbuildings, many more animals, and very few people.

:16:29. > :16:33.Let us have a look at sport now. Paul is here with the cricket.

:16:33. > :16:39.A good day for England and Yorkshire. How many times this

:16:39. > :16:44.season have we had two good pieces of news. Yorkshire's Tim Bresnan

:16:44. > :16:47.what one of England's he was today. On day one of the third Test

:16:48. > :16:56.between England and India at Edgbaston, Brize then removed

:16:56. > :17:01.Gambhir, Dravid and Laxman. He finished with 4 for 60 to go off 20

:17:01. > :17:06.overs, he needed a bit of health from the fielders, but look at the

:17:06. > :17:15.rigmarole they have got to get through to get a 4th wicket! It was

:17:15. > :17:24.a video appeal. There is a few hand gestures. The cricketing term now

:17:24. > :17:31.is a hot spot, and I was most impressed with what my grandma used

:17:31. > :17:36.to call the Hand jive. I cannot remember those days!

:17:36. > :17:39.Better news for Yorkshire is that they themselves have won their 48

:17:39. > :17:49.over match at Lord's against Middlesex. Yorkshire were put into

:17:49. > :17:50.

:17:50. > :17:56.bat, they lost skipper Andrew Gale, but Jack Rudolf and Jonny Bairstow

:17:56. > :18:01.led a revolt. Yorkshire won by 22 runs.

:18:01. > :18:07.Lots of football as well. Eight of our regions where in action last

:18:07. > :18:13.night. For sheer passion, the Yorkshire derby at Elland Road

:18:13. > :18:16.probably won the prize. This was a cup-tie. More than

:18:16. > :18:21.17,000 at Elland Road watched Bradford City deliver the Yorkshire

:18:21. > :18:25.pride their manager and 4,000 travelling fans demanded. Twice

:18:25. > :18:32.City lead through Jack Compton and Michael Flynn, twice Leeds find

:18:33. > :18:38.equalisers. Here, McCormack heads in 42-2. The one-time Leeds took

:18:38. > :18:46.the lead on the night, they held on to it, and a 3-2 victory. A power

:18:46. > :18:52.cut at Hartlepool meant a delayed start for Sheffield United. 1-1

:18:52. > :18:55.deadlock became extra time, and then penalties. It was nearly

:18:55. > :19:00.10:30pm by the time the Blades were blasted through to round two.

:19:00. > :19:06.Joining them will be Doncaster Rovers who coped well with without

:19:06. > :19:10.Billy sharp, and cruised past Tranmere. Huddersfield Town 14-2 at

:19:11. > :19:20.Port Vale, all goals coming from players who were already in situ

:19:20. > :19:24.before the summer recruitment drive. Three disappointments included

:19:24. > :19:30.Rotherham United score, who scored first thanks to an on goal from

:19:30. > :19:34.Mills, but lost 4-1, and Barnsley, who still have not given their new

:19:34. > :19:43.manager and role yet. Morecambe hit the headlines with their tooted nil

:19:43. > :19:50.victory. Chesterfield's match at Rochdale went to extra time, Danny

:19:50. > :19:56.Whitaker scored twice for the Spireites, but Rochdale went

:19:56. > :20:00.through to the second round. Sorry Newquay not show all the

:20:00. > :20:05.goals. Four City of Leeds gymnasts have

:20:05. > :20:08.set off to China for the World Student Games. They all study at

:20:08. > :20:18.Leeds Metropolitan University and if they do well, it could be a

:20:18. > :20:31.

:20:31. > :20:35.For gymnasts, one university, or heading to the biggest

:20:35. > :20:43.Championships of their career. is my first time competing for

:20:43. > :20:48.Great Britain. So it is a pretty big competition for me. Definitely

:20:48. > :20:52.the biggest competition, a huge opportunity. Because we are

:20:52. > :20:58.competing against the best people in the world.

:20:58. > :21:03.It is definitely spurring them on to play together.

:21:03. > :21:07.You can do different skills, and so it is easy to try and keep going

:21:07. > :21:11.throughout. Ashley had featured on Look North

:21:11. > :21:18.before, when he won the title at the Youth Olympics. Since then he

:21:18. > :21:24.has had a knee injury. I have been out for a year and not training. So

:21:24. > :21:28.I really have to gain that year back and some more.

:21:28. > :21:35.He is though the closest of the four to making it to London 2012.

:21:35. > :21:40.am up there with the top ten boys'. We all have to fight for that team.

:21:40. > :21:49.I do sometimes let myself dream about it, and just do not want to

:21:49. > :21:57.let myself get ahead of myself. is a specialist - stocky but strong,

:21:57. > :22:02.he plays the Rings. It has got power and artistic side involved.

:22:02. > :22:08.Rebecca's favourite is the beam. It is just four inches wide. How does

:22:08. > :22:13.she do it? Years of practice doing repetitions of skills, just walking

:22:13. > :22:19.along the been, to flexing their muscles. Just lots of repetitions

:22:19. > :22:23.so you know whether been his. British gymnastics is on a high

:22:23. > :22:27.right now - it will be tough for any of these for to make the

:22:27. > :22:32.Olympic team, but a good showing in China will certainly help their

:22:32. > :22:37.cause. We did see Harry Gration on his

:22:37. > :22:47.mountain bike last night. It is only fair Christa Ackroyd has ago

:22:47. > :22:52.

:22:52. > :22:58.on the buyers! -- on the buyers! I used to do that, actually. How

:22:58. > :23:03.long before Jonny Bairstow gets a call? Another century - he has got

:23:03. > :23:07.to be knocking on those doors. It does seem that we can do with a

:23:07. > :23:12.super hero at the moment. In Sheffield they have just the man.

:23:12. > :23:21.For the next five nights, Batman is swooping into the city's a rematch

:23:21. > :23:27.in an eye-popping stage show. It is our very own boy wonder, to mingle.

:23:27. > :23:32.--, Ingle. Holy Wednesday, Batman - look what

:23:32. > :23:36.has pulled up at Sheffield Arena. Yes, straight from the mean streets

:23:36. > :23:42.of Gaughan, commissionaire Gordon's favourite man in bullet-proof
