:00:10. > :00:16.Tonight, china accuses Yorkshire. The most successful country at the

:00:16. > :00:21.last Olympics picks at Leeds as its base for London 2012.

:00:21. > :00:25.Also, containing the trouble. What stopped a disorder like this

:00:25. > :00:28.turning into full-scale riot seen elsewhere in Britain.

:00:28. > :00:33.And join me here at the Huddersfield food and drink

:00:33. > :00:38.Festival where I will be trying spicy ice-cream and three T cheese.

:00:38. > :00:48.And join me for the weather. We have seen cloudy skies and it will

:00:48. > :00:53.

:00:53. > :00:58.I think that is probably my favourite flag of all and China,

:00:58. > :01:03.the biggest medal winners at the last Olympic Games, have chosen and

:01:03. > :01:10.Leeds as their base for London 2012. Several other countries have played

:01:10. > :01:15.-- made plans to choose Yorkshire. Sheffield will host the United

:01:15. > :01:19.States divers. York will have comes for guinea be Sir and Gambia. The

:01:19. > :01:24.entire Serbian Olympic team will be split between Leeds and Sheffield.

:01:24. > :01:27.The Dutch swimming team will use leads. We already knew that the

:01:27. > :01:37.Chinese track and field team will be in Leeds, but it has been

:01:37. > :01:44.

:01:45. > :01:52.announced that their entire squad This is how they sold leads to the

:01:52. > :01:58.Chinese. And it seems to have done the trick. I am very proud of our

:01:58. > :02:02.links with China. At a ceremony today, it was announced that 300

:02:02. > :02:07.athletes and staff will be based in and around Leeds as they prepare

:02:07. > :02:10.for London 2012. After the handshakes came the ping-

:02:10. > :02:16.pong. The head of Leeds City Council was more than holding his

:02:16. > :02:20.own. China not only hosted the last Olympics, but finished top of the

:02:20. > :02:26.medal table. They were not short of offers from hosts, but one place

:02:26. > :02:34.had the edge. Yorkshire people, these people have a positive

:02:34. > :02:38.attitude and a warm personality and also are supportive. You will see

:02:38. > :02:44.action from the city council. Sports Centre at the University

:02:44. > :02:49.will host table-tennis, fencing and type 1 Dekker competitors and four

:02:49. > :02:54.other teams will warm up for the Games in Yorkshire. Yorkshire has

:02:54. > :02:57.more training team signed up than London. 15 months ago we were at

:02:57. > :03:01.the bottom of the national league table and now we are the top. We

:03:01. > :03:05.are thrilled about that and it reflects the hard work we have put

:03:05. > :03:09.in. For children like the ones taking part in this summer camp,

:03:09. > :03:13.the deal with China means the chance to watch some of the best

:03:13. > :03:19.athletes prepare for the biggest competition in the world.

:03:19. > :03:23.I would love to learn how to play table tennis better. The same,

:03:23. > :03:31.really. I want to know how to play table tennis better because I am

:03:31. > :03:41.More teams and training camps will be announced in the coming weeks.

:03:41. > :03:43.

:03:43. > :03:48.It does not end here, for With this in the studio our

:03:48. > :03:55.councillor Keith Wake field and Yang Shande, a performance director

:03:55. > :04:05.from the Olympic Committee. Mr Yang, why did you choose Leeds?

:04:05. > :04:07.

:04:07. > :04:17.I think you must think the approach training, you must have the aim.

:04:17. > :04:19.

:04:19. > :04:25.Pro training you must have a good sports facility. It is not very

:04:25. > :04:32.easy fought 200, 300 athletes together and suitable facilities.

:04:32. > :04:40.From the last year, we had an inspection from different areas and

:04:40. > :04:45.countries including the UK and some European countries. At the least,

:04:45. > :04:50.we think that Leeds is the best choice. We congratulate you on your

:04:50. > :04:57.choice and we agree that Yorkshire is the best. I hope I will welcome

:04:57. > :05:04.has been very warm. Yes. From the last time we inspected Leeds and

:05:04. > :05:11.Yorkshire and also this time we came here to make the decision, we

:05:11. > :05:19.got some very welcome. The council member has come here to welcome us.

:05:20. > :05:28.We went to the Leeds University so we have a special children wearing

:05:28. > :05:35.the red T-shirt to show a welcome to the China team here. Last time

:05:35. > :05:41.they had special students also wear the red T-shirt to show a welcome.

:05:41. > :05:46.Keith, has it cost us any money and will it benefit the local economy?

:05:46. > :05:50.It will gain in terms of hosting a team as big as China which is

:05:50. > :05:57.probably one of the most exciting stories in our history of the sport.

:05:57. > :06:00.What you get from it is stronger commercial and cultural links. We

:06:00. > :06:06.should not forget this is about inspiring young children and this

:06:06. > :06:10.is a massive boost. Can I just say, Keith you need to brush up on your

:06:10. > :06:15.table tennis. Mr Yang is a former high jumper so we will put him to

:06:15. > :06:20.the test. The next time you are here, we will also wear the red T-

:06:20. > :06:25.shirts. Welcome to Yorkshire. you.

:06:25. > :06:30.Some sad news now, at champion cyclist Ray Eden died when he

:06:30. > :06:34.stepped in to stop a couple who were fighting outside his home. He

:06:34. > :06:40.stepped in, but was then punched once and he smashed his head on the

:06:40. > :06:45.ground and died three days later. Today his attacker, Luke Jolly,

:06:45. > :06:50.were sentenced to four years and nine months. Ray's widow has spoken

:06:50. > :06:56.exclusively to our Correspondent. I just wanted him to look me in the

:06:56. > :07:01.face and realise what he has done and how he devastated the family.

:07:01. > :07:07.Ray and Gayle were happily married for 14 years, but Ray was too

:07:07. > :07:12.tragically lose his life at the age of 42. It was breakfast time in

:07:12. > :07:18.this suburban Doncaster on 18th March. Ray Eden witnessed his

:07:18. > :07:22.neighbour, Luke Jolly, having a row with his girlfriend. Mr Eden tried

:07:22. > :07:29.to intervene and Luke Jolly punched him to the ground where he hit his

:07:29. > :07:33.head. He died from his injuries in hospital three days later.

:07:33. > :07:38.Widow Gale was in court today with family and friends to see Luke

:07:38. > :07:42.Jolly showing no remorse for what he had done. Luke Jolly was jailed

:07:42. > :07:52.for four years and nine months. has shown no remorse all the way

:07:52. > :07:52.

:07:52. > :07:57.through. I know they tried to make out that he went back to help my

:07:57. > :08:02.husband, he actually went back shook him and dropped him again. He

:08:02. > :08:08.is a coward. You would not do that to another human being, I would not

:08:08. > :08:12.do it to a dog or anybody. He is a coward. To lie about what happened

:08:12. > :08:16.and say it was self-defence is another way of showing he is a

:08:16. > :08:22.coward. He can't take responsibility for his own actions.

:08:22. > :08:27.It has left a huge hole, it really has. Nothing will replace that huge

:08:27. > :08:33.hold and I just live day-to-day trying to get by a and I have the

:08:33. > :08:39.happy memories, the good memories. He would stop and help anybody and

:08:39. > :08:43.unfortunately this time he made a decision that ended his life.

:08:43. > :08:51.Eden's memory of her love snatched away.

:08:51. > :08:57.Later on tonight's Look North, defying his doctors, meet Oscar -

:08:57. > :09:01.that toddler defying expectations that he would never see or hear.

:09:01. > :09:06.Today police released CCTV images of disturbances which happened in

:09:06. > :09:11.Leeds earlier this week. In total, 28 arrests have now been made

:09:11. > :09:15.across Yorkshire. Despite the tension, our towns and

:09:15. > :09:19.cities have experience fewer problems than elsewhere. As the

:09:19. > :09:26.government seeks explanations, should they looked to Yorkshire far

:09:26. > :09:31.answers? Captured on CCTV cameras moments

:09:31. > :09:35.this week when Chapeltown could have stepped back to the 1980s. An

:09:35. > :09:41.area with a troubled past that spent 30 years trying to shed that

:09:41. > :09:47.reputation. Two shootings between youth's led to a tense few night.

:09:47. > :09:53.This mask was attacked with stones and today at prayers, they asked

:09:53. > :10:03.for continuing community harmony. When somebody argues with you, when

:10:03. > :10:06.

:10:06. > :10:10.somebody disputes with you, tell These were the terrifying scenes

:10:11. > :10:17.from the Chapeltown riots of 1971. This time similar scenes were

:10:17. > :10:22.prevented. We are not completely out of the woods yet. At. I was

:10:22. > :10:26.thinking things may spiral out of control. I think it is due to the

:10:26. > :10:31.hard work we have put in with the community and the understanding

:10:31. > :10:36.that people have with the community. They have come together to send a

:10:36. > :10:39.positive signal out that this is not the way forward. As London was

:10:39. > :10:44.being mooted, adults in Chapeltown took to the streets to keep things

:10:44. > :10:49.calm. I would like to give a real compliment to the people working

:10:49. > :10:52.hard as Community mediators. They presented themselves and we have an

:10:52. > :10:58.ongoing relationship with them and they have been on the streets

:10:58. > :11:06.working as hard as we have. What do we want, peace. When do we want it,

:11:06. > :11:11.now. We put together a peace to the jaw talking to local people.

:11:11. > :11:15.Working with the community to work pass this. I think it is a

:11:16. > :11:21.community spirit. We had a peace march and people came out together.

:11:21. > :11:26.I think it is a rallying together on wanting to keep our community

:11:27. > :11:31.close-knit. Today young people in Chapeltown said the rivalries

:11:31. > :11:38.between groups remained. But they were proud of how much had been

:11:38. > :11:42.achieve this week. Thank you very much. About an hour

:11:42. > :11:47.ago I managed to catch up with the Deputy Prime Minister who had been

:11:47. > :11:52.in South Yorkshire. I asked him, was he not proud that Yorkshire had

:11:52. > :11:56.avoided full-scale rioting? I think it is a real tribute to the

:11:56. > :11:59.communities of Yorkshire. I have just spent some time with youth

:12:00. > :12:04.leaders and activists here in Sheffield and they are rightly so

:12:04. > :12:09.proud of the fact that when we were witnessing all of those horrific

:12:09. > :12:14.scenes in other cities and towns across the country, here in

:12:14. > :12:19.Sheffield young people were talking to each other and using the social

:12:19. > :12:23.media to say to each other, we are not going to let this happen. I

:12:23. > :12:28.think it is a great tribute. Although there has been trouble in

:12:28. > :12:35.Chapeltown, it is on a much smaller scale. Although injuries were

:12:35. > :12:40.serious. In Bradford, virtually nothing, thank goodness. Others

:12:40. > :12:43.saying community leaders came on to look north for weeks ago saying a

:12:43. > :12:50.word they are doing it is threatened by the cuts. What would

:12:50. > :12:53.you say to them? I accept there is an ongoing debate about how we make

:12:53. > :12:58.savings and make sure the most vulnerable are not

:12:58. > :13:02.disproportionately affected by those. Unfortunately, to get this

:13:02. > :13:07.thing as the country, we are all going to have to tighten our belts.

:13:07. > :13:11.Of course that means local authorities. But community cohesion,

:13:11. > :13:19.those people going out on the street saying please do not join in,

:13:19. > :13:23.surely that is vital to safeguard the communities. Of course.

:13:23. > :13:27.Everything plays its part. I do not think we should assume that

:13:27. > :13:31.communities can only hang together if people in Whitehall right checks

:13:31. > :13:36.out for them, it is more complicated. That community spirit

:13:36. > :13:40.is something which is not just about grants from central

:13:40. > :13:45.government, but yes, I accept there are controversy is about where

:13:45. > :13:51.savings need to be made. Not least in policing, but what I think the

:13:51. > :13:56.context is, it will be a real disservice to young people of the

:13:56. > :14:01.future if we do not managed to wipe the slate clean and pile up more

:14:01. > :14:11.debt that they will eventually have to pay themselves. Thank you very

:14:11. > :14:16.much for taking the time to talk to Five of the 28 arrests were made in

:14:16. > :14:21.North Yorkshire. A 27-year-old man and a 24-year-old

:14:21. > :14:25.man were arrested in Thirsk for conspiracy to commit violent

:14:25. > :14:30.disorder and in York two 18-year- old men were arrested for

:14:30. > :14:34.conspiracy to commit burglary. A man from Scarborough was arrested

:14:34. > :14:39.and later released. The Archbishop of York has said

:14:39. > :14:45.that Britain has become a selfish, me first society.

:14:45. > :14:49.Dr John Sentamu says he is shocked and appalled by the looters' vile

:14:49. > :14:53.and evil acts. The archbishop said he would take

:14:53. > :14:58.matters into his own hands if somebody broke into his home.

:14:58. > :15:05.If somebody tried to attack my family in my house, that is not a

:15:05. > :15:12.vigilante action, it is self- defence in defending your property.

:15:12. > :15:17.As far as I am concerned, should you turn up in my house, I have a

:15:17. > :15:27.cricket bat. I would hate you pretty hard.

:15:27. > :15:36.-- hit you. A toddler from has been -- who was

:15:36. > :15:46.told he would never have seen or here has defied doctors. -- he

:15:46. > :15:46.

:15:46. > :15:56.would never see or hear. Oscar, can we have your left hand?

:15:56. > :15:57.

:15:57. > :16:03.Good boy. Where is your hair? Two-year-old Oscar amazes everybody.

:16:03. > :16:08.He has cerebral palsy after being starved of oxygen as a baby.

:16:08. > :16:18.He has so past what the professionals said Oscar would do.

:16:18. > :16:20.

:16:20. > :16:24.-- he has surpassed. Even as a baby Oscar was determined.

:16:24. > :16:32.Doctors said he would never see or hear and would always have to eat

:16:32. > :16:37.through a tube but he proved them wrong. This centre in London looks

:16:37. > :16:45.at speech and movement and in one visit Moscow has made great

:16:45. > :16:50.progress. -- Oscar has.

:16:50. > :16:57.We use communication picture cards to help him with his speech and

:16:57. > :17:02.language. But the therapy costs thousands of

:17:02. > :17:07.pounds a visit so every weekend family and friends worked

:17:07. > :17:12.tirelessly to write -- raise the funds.

:17:12. > :17:22.We have kept a log overs things we have done Foskett so he can look

:17:22. > :17:23.

:17:23. > :17:28.back on it and say, this is what we did. -- done for Oscar. He is a

:17:28. > :17:35.special little boy for us. Oscar beat the odds every day and

:17:35. > :17:40.with more support he might just be able to say thank you himself.

:17:40. > :17:45.I am sure you would expect us to keep you posted about his progress,

:17:45. > :17:50.and we will. York City target a return to the

:17:50. > :17:56.Football League as the new season gets under way.

:17:56. > :18:03.And we will be live as Yorkshire's best food and drink producers offer

:18:03. > :18:08.something for the weekend. A new charity event in memory of

:18:08. > :18:15.Jane Tomlinson really seems to have captured the public imagination,

:18:15. > :18:22.just as she did. Walk for All this weekend in Settle is a sell-out.

:18:22. > :18:25.Hotels and B&Bs are sold out. But if you want to get involved you

:18:25. > :18:30.still can. Settle is gearing up for action and

:18:30. > :18:34.the reason is Walk for All, this weekend's walking Festival in

:18:34. > :18:40.memory of Jane Tomlinson will stop places on the walk off fully booked

:18:40. > :18:45.in what has become a sell-out event. There has been really good interest

:18:45. > :18:54.in the event. One of the reasons we have chosen deep roots is that most

:18:54. > :19:01.of them are surfaced. -- chose and it routes.

:19:01. > :19:05.Guest houses and hotels are fully booked within a ten-mile radius.

:19:05. > :19:10.A lot of local people have volunteered to do the registration

:19:10. > :19:15.in the morning, volunteer as marshals. In the end that is really

:19:15. > :19:20.important. Everybody is really pleased about it and I think they

:19:20. > :19:24.will do it next year as well. Surrounding towns and villages are

:19:24. > :19:27.offering accommodation. We will try to find do something

:19:27. > :19:31.before you come. It is most unlikely you will find something in

:19:31. > :19:38.Settle but you might something further rout.

:19:38. > :19:46.Those taking part will experienced some of Yorkshire's most at

:19:47. > :19:51.stunning landscape. -- will experience a.

:19:51. > :19:56.It has been a busy weekend. Simon Dyson's season is going from

:19:56. > :20:00.strength to strength. After the first-round stage of the USPGA he

:20:00. > :20:04.was the best-placed British player. Not quite so good in the second

:20:04. > :20:08.round, two over par, but time to recover.

:20:08. > :20:13.In football, Sheffield Wednesday last night became the 5th Yorkshire

:20:13. > :20:18.team to reach the FA Cup second round. It was a bit of a slog, 0-0

:20:18. > :20:23.at Hillsborough after 90 minutes but when stay held on to win the

:20:23. > :20:28.penalty shoot-out. This was the one that sealed it for James O'Connor

:20:28. > :20:38.and it was well worth the effort for Wednesday. Their reward in the

:20:38. > :20:39.

:20:39. > :20:43.next round is a trip to Blackburn rap -- Blackburn Rovers. All of

:20:43. > :20:46.those matches are to be played the week after next.

:20:46. > :20:51.In the build up to the weekend, everybody might be talking about

:20:51. > :20:57.the Premier League, but it is also the first weekend of the new season

:20:57. > :21:01.outside the Football League. In the Blue Square Bet Premier, that means

:21:01. > :21:07.that York City will relaunch their campaign for a return to the

:21:08. > :21:12.Football League, and there are grounds optimism.

:21:12. > :21:18.I think it will be a good season because we have had a good start.

:21:18. > :21:22.We have a good chance of getting to the top of the League.

:21:22. > :21:27.The thread of optimism pervades all generations around here but one of

:21:27. > :21:32.the things that sets York City a part is that most of their rob come

:21:32. > :21:36.in opponents have branded them promotion candidates as well.

:21:36. > :21:46.their upcoming opponents. Maybe it is the care of that Gary Mills has

:21:46. > :21:47.

:21:47. > :21:57.taken to prepare for his first season start as possible stopped --

:21:57. > :21:58.

:21:58. > :22:05.ASDA boss. I hope we can do it. City start

:22:05. > :22:10.with a trip to Ebbsfleet. The training ground was baptised by Sir

:22:10. > :22:15.Alex himself. It has been a long time waiting for some of the Fergie

:22:15. > :22:23.magic to rub off on New York's City. But maybe the point is that Gary

:22:23. > :22:28.Mills goes about doing things his own way.

:22:28. > :22:33.The League club that is not at the moment has to turn into League club.

:22:33. > :22:43.Never mind what has gone on before, and that is why York City could be

:22:43. > :22:46.in for a memorable 2011-2012. Good luck to York City and well

:22:47. > :22:55.done to Yorkshire's Tim Bresnan, who got 50 with the bat today for

:22:55. > :23:05.England, helping Alastair Cook made his 294 against India. -- mate his

:23:05. > :23:05.

:23:05. > :23:10.294. Pass make. At the Huddersfield Food and Drink

:23:10. > :23:18.Festival you can sing and dance while offering at some of

:23:18. > :23:24.Yorkshire's best offerings. People in Huddersfield are coming

:23:24. > :23:29.together to eat and drink, a really positive start to the weekend. We

:23:29. > :23:38.have Thai food, Mexican food, a lot of Yorkshire produce and I think I

:23:38. > :23:46.am about to try some spicy ice- cream. What do you have for me?

:23:46. > :23:53.Some great rhubarb cheese, which is known -- which is from Wakefield,

:23:53. > :24:03.known as the rhubarb Triangle. Then you have some delightful ice-cream,

:24:03. > :24:13.dandelion and burdock. It has a really strong taste. You must try

:24:13. > :24:20.

:24:20. > :24:26.this one. This is my favourite. Sealey jam ice-cream. -- chilly

:24:26. > :24:35.obviously you like Derry, but what is the best thing about the

:24:35. > :24:42.festival? -- dairy. It is great representation for Yorkshire and
