:00:06. > :00:10.Welcome to Look North. David Cameron comes to St James's
:00:10. > :00:15.Hospital. We ask the Prime Minister why his Government is considering
:00:15. > :00:22.ending children's heart surgery in Yorkshire. Also on Look North
:00:22. > :00:27.tonight. Chairman Ken causes controversy again. Anti-racist
:00:27. > :00:31.campaigners condemn Bates' comments in a prematch programme. And the
:00:31. > :00:35.white rose county from yesterday years how you can access archive of
:00:35. > :00:38.Yorkshire life. And join me for the weather. Showers in places to end
:00:38. > :00:48.the day, but plenty more sunshine on offer tomorrow. I will have the
:00:48. > :00:54.
:00:54. > :00:59.Good evening. It is a proposal which has galvanised 500,000 people
:00:59. > :01:01.into signing a petition, and handing it into Downing Street. By
:01:01. > :01:05.campaigners and Yorkshire politicians alike. Expertss are due
:01:05. > :01:08.to report in November, whether they will recommend the closure of
:01:08. > :01:12.Leeds's children's heart surgery unit. That would mean hundreds of
:01:12. > :01:17.patients would have to travel many miles for treatment, and the loss
:01:17. > :01:21.of expertise from this region. So during a visit to St James's
:01:21. > :01:25.Hospital, our health correspondent caught up with the Prime Minister,
:01:25. > :01:34.David Cameron, and tackled him over the issue. He did not give her much
:01:34. > :01:37.cause for hope. Save our surgery bauz became the rallying cry after
:01:37. > :01:42.the bombshell threat to Leeds dropped in February. Parent power
:01:42. > :01:48.has produced protests, petitions and public meeting. Seriously ill
:01:48. > :01:51.children exposed to the camera, to expose the expertise few of us knew
:01:51. > :01:55.about. 14 Million people are within reach of Leeds, far more than a
:01:55. > :02:00.close to alternative units. Many heart patients have complex issues
:02:00. > :02:05.that need other specialists, in Leeds, they are all under one roof.
:02:05. > :02:08.In June, the largest regional petition handed into Number Ten
:02:08. > :02:13.carried 500,000 Yorkshire addresses. Children, parents and staff were
:02:14. > :02:17.joined by the region's MPs. I am the father of three children. I was
:02:17. > :02:20.the father of a desperately ill child, and we had to go to
:02:20. > :02:23.different places for treatment, and what you wanted as a dad, or a mum,
:02:23. > :02:27.is to know you are getting absolutely the best treatment. When
:02:27. > :02:30.it comes to really complicated heart Virgin for children,
:02:30. > :02:36.incredibly complex discipline you can't have it every where so how
:02:36. > :02:39.many places do you have it in, so that dads like me, or mums and dads
:02:39. > :02:43.watching this programme know when their child goes into complex heart
:02:43. > :02:47.surgery, they are getting the very best this country can offer. It is
:02:47. > :02:50.not an easy decision to make. It is not being made by politician, it is
:02:50. > :02:53.a proper review, the decision will be made by the experts and it will
:02:53. > :02:58.be announced later this year. you sympathise with their
:02:58. > :03:03.situation? Of course I understand. No-one wants to travel for care. As
:03:03. > :03:08.I say there be go on being great children's servicings in Leeds
:03:08. > :03:12.whether it gos the way of Newcastle or other decision processes, the
:03:12. > :03:17.hospital services remain, all the treatments remain. It is this one
:03:17. > :03:20.question, a very complicated child heart surgery. You can't do it
:03:20. > :03:24.everywhere because this is a complicated thing. You need to know,
:03:24. > :03:28.as the mother or father of one of these children, you want to know
:03:28. > :03:33.that that surgeon, who is about to operate has done this many times
:03:33. > :03:37.before, is absolutely ex nert, do you have to have a degree of
:03:37. > :03:40.specialism. The question is where do you put the specialist? There
:03:40. > :03:43.are bound to be some disappointed, but it is right we have proper
:03:43. > :03:49.specialism, so we save more children's lives, in the end that
:03:49. > :03:55.is what this is about. Thank you. The Prime Minister there talking to
:03:55. > :04:01.our health correspondent. Also tonight, for Leeds United chairman
:04:01. > :04:05.is in hot water for comments he has made in programme notes. They have
:04:05. > :04:11.managed to upset fans and the Chinese community in Leeds, and
:04:11. > :04:16.football anti-racism campaigner, one charity has called his comments
:04:16. > :04:20."Disgraceful." More from them in a moment but first Neil joins us at
:04:20. > :04:25.Elland Road. Yes, this is the programme we are talking about. It
:04:25. > :04:31.was sold down there, on Tuesday niepgt, ahead of Leeds's game with
:04:31. > :04:36.Hull. If you turn to four and five. It is the article in question writ
:04:36. > :04:41.by when dates. -- Ken Bates. He is known for his forthright views and
:04:41. > :04:49.this seems to be the case here. He has a go at some of the fans then
:04:49. > :04:54.he turns his attention to asylum- seeker, single mothers and the
:04:54. > :04:58.Chinese community. Ken bait s is no different. He and some of the fans
:04:58. > :05:03.haven't always seen eye to eye. On Saturday, there was a protest at
:05:03. > :05:12.Elland Road. In the article, Ken gives his terse assessments of the
:05:12. > :05:19.protestors. That has been met with disbelief. To say to fans they are
:05:19. > :05:24.more rons, it is pathetic. I am not surprised he is having a government
:05:24. > :05:30.go. Nobody is a moron who think, well they were protesting again it.
:05:30. > :05:40.They want to get him out. It is ridiculous. Then he turned his
:05:40. > :05:49.
:05:49. > :05:53.A lot of time and money has been spent bringing the Chinese team to
:05:53. > :05:58.Leeds. On Friday there was a ceremony involving the Chinese
:05:58. > :06:04.community. Know these comments have upset that community. The Chinese
:06:04. > :06:09.come into Leeds, to bring the Olympics, it will be good for the
:06:09. > :06:15.Leeds people, in Yorkshire, so I think it is a good thing, but what
:06:15. > :06:19.he said is a bit, not nice to our Chinese. And it has not gone down
:06:19. > :06:23.well with those responsible for the games in Yorkshire. In terms of the
:06:23. > :06:29.sporting community getting behind you, do you feel they have? They
:06:30. > :06:34.were well behind it long before I came onboard and have continued to
:06:34. > :06:39.be supportive. And so that is why, you have all this support and one
:06:39. > :06:43.man voices it, it is a shame. Everyone is entitled to their
:06:43. > :06:47.opinion. Our opinion is clear. It is positive for the county. There
:06:47. > :06:52.are many teams based in Yorkshire as well. There is a benefit not
:06:52. > :06:58.just from the training camps but from the businesses. Ken baits is
:06:58. > :07:04.no stranger to controversy once again. Let us go back to Neil. Neil,
:07:04. > :07:12.what else did Mr Bates say in that controversial programme? Well, I
:07:12. > :07:16.mentioned at the top, what, asylum seekers and single mothers. Let me
:07:16. > :07:23.quote you a couple of thing, both Corporal and dam punishment should
:07:23. > :07:26.be brought back and we should putle mothers into hostels. If we chucked
:07:26. > :07:36.out all the asylum-seekers there would be enough jobs for everyone,
:07:36. > :07:41.even if it is sweeping the streets. I should add we did ask if Leeds
:07:42. > :07:49.United, if there was anyone that could comment and they say no.
:07:49. > :07:53.Joining us in our Newcastle news room is Laura Pidcock. She respects
:07:53. > :07:57.Show Racism The Red Card. Your reaction tonight? We are finding
:07:57. > :08:00.these comments from Ken really really damaging. Show Racism The
:08:00. > :08:05.Red Card isn't just about getting rid of racism from the football
:08:05. > :08:10.ground, it is about getting rid of racism from the community. We know
:08:10. > :08:14.for a fact that these type of comments, about, you know, the link
:08:14. > :08:18.between asylum-seekers and immigrants and unemployment are
:08:18. > :08:23.extremely unhelpful, and create a perceived threat that these people
:08:23. > :08:28.are stealing jobs, when we know the fact is it is illegal for asylum
:08:28. > :08:35.seekers to work. Will you be taking this any further? Do you have any
:08:35. > :08:41.powers, anyone you can complain to? Will you take it with up with Ken
:08:41. > :08:45.Bates Of course we continue condone these comments and condemn them. We
:08:45. > :08:50.will take it further in we will continue to educate young people,
:08:50. > :08:56.there are varied causes for unemployment, that it is not about
:08:56. > :08:59.illegal immigrants or asylum- seekers, that this tactic of
:08:59. > :09:04.scapegoating, creates conflict. This is how we will take it further.
:09:05. > :09:10.I think Ken, he wants rid of human right, so aam not sure we will be
:09:10. > :09:16.able to convince him having a human right as an asylum-seeker is going
:09:16. > :09:19.to convince him any further of that, but he actually has made very
:09:19. > :09:24.clumsy and dangerous ra,, in this programme, which is powerful,
:09:24. > :09:29.because it has gone tout a lot of Leeds United fans P Thank you for
:09:29. > :09:36.your comments. -- gone out to. In another news detectives in West
:09:36. > :09:41.Yorkshire are hunting a gang of masked robbers, police have
:09:41. > :09:46.released this e-fit of a sus expect. The gang got away with cash and
:09:46. > :09:50.jewellery, no-one was hurt. And police have released new CCTV
:09:50. > :09:56.pictures of a group of youths attacking a police car in
:09:56. > :10:00.Huddersfield. Two officers received minor injury, when a large group
:10:00. > :10:05.threw object oblts at the car. The incident happened at the ASDA cash
:10:05. > :10:10.ka -- car park in Bradford Road. 36 people have been arrested, in
:10:10. > :10:13.connection with disturbances in Huddersfield P A 47 worker has died
:10:13. > :10:17.following an industrial accident at a company in South Yorkshire.
:10:17. > :10:22.Police said it was believed the man was injured while moving metal
:10:22. > :10:25.items when the factory premises at ATI Allvac Ltd on Castle Street,
:10:25. > :10:33.Carlisle Street in Sheffield. He was taken to hospital following the
:10:33. > :10:37.incident but later died. An investigation is under way. We have
:10:38. > :10:42.been following this for time but I can tell you a plan to sell York's
:10:42. > :10:46.biggest coach park to York St John University has been abandoned. The
:10:46. > :10:49.university has withdrawn its offer to buy Union Terrace car park for
:10:49. > :10:53.development. 22,000 people signed a petition against the plan, which
:10:53. > :10:57.was strongly opposed by local businesses. The leader of York
:10:57. > :11:05.Council said he was disappointed, as the development of the land
:11:05. > :11:10.could have boosted jobs and the economy. Now, an A-level student at
:11:10. > :11:15.Trinity College in Thorne has been celebrating results today. Sophie
:11:15. > :11:22.Hennessey amazed her family friend and teachers with her success. Less
:11:22. > :11:29.than three years an an horrific accident left her sister dead and
:11:29. > :11:35.Sophie in a coma. Some news to celebrate. Two As and a B. Sophie
:11:35. > :11:43.Hennessey has worked harder than most, for her impressive grades.
:11:43. > :11:46.proud you have. Fantastic. Deserve it. What you have been through.
:11:46. > :11:51.fantastic set of results but if you look at what she has been through
:11:51. > :11:55.in the last couple of years you will realise her achievement today
:11:55. > :11:59.is exceptional. Two-and-a-half years ago she was walking back from
:11:59. > :12:03.school with 11-year-old sister Megan when they were hit by their
:12:03. > :12:10.cousin's car. Nathan Hennessey was driving at speed in a built up area
:12:10. > :12:16.Megan tie died at the scene. Sophie was left in a coma with a serious
:12:16. > :12:22.brain injury. She almost didn't make it, you know. As parents we
:12:22. > :12:27.had to suffer. Losing one child and almost losing another at the same
:12:27. > :12:32.time. But she's just faced it and dealt wit and kept going. She has
:12:32. > :12:36.had great school, the culture of the school is fantastic. The
:12:36. > :12:41.support she has had from teachers and friends, from the hospital, and
:12:41. > :12:44.other people, from her family, has been tremendous. Today I feel that
:12:44. > :12:50.sounds like an exaggeration but I think I am the proudest parent in
:12:50. > :12:56.England, her mum is as well. At the most distressing time Sophie
:12:56. > :13:01.focused on school. It provided a welcome distraction. They have made
:13:01. > :13:04.it as easy as they could. Teachers and friends have backbench great to
:13:04. > :13:09.me. Everyone's helped me. I don't think I would have got the same
:13:09. > :13:14.results if it wasn't for me school and friends. She has been a
:13:14. > :13:18.fantastic young person, but to come through this, and to do so well,
:13:18. > :13:21.there aren't any words really to describe her success, and her
:13:21. > :13:30.achievement. At last, a reason for the Hennessey family to celebrate,
:13:30. > :13:33.and look to the future. Two As and a B will enable Sophie to read
:13:33. > :13:37.English at Newcastle university. Good for her. Sophie was one of
:13:37. > :13:44.thousands of students across the region who have got their results
:13:44. > :13:49.today, in what is the emotionally charged day of the academic year.
:13:49. > :13:53.Yes, with huge hikes in university fees coming in next year, students
:13:53. > :13:57.are grappling with different priority, Danni Hewson has been to
:13:57. > :14:02.meet one Leeds teenager who has decided the cost of a degree is too
:14:02. > :14:10.much. But first Cathy Killick went to watch pupils get their results
:14:10. > :14:14.at York college. York College at nine clock this morning and the
:14:14. > :14:19.anxiety the palpable. Their future depends on grades and this year A-
:14:19. > :14:24.levels count more than ever. Because university tuition fees go
:14:24. > :14:34.up in 2012, there has been a surge in demand for this last cheap year
:14:34. > :14:35.
:14:35. > :14:43.of entry. It means pressure for places is intense. A, A*, fantastic.
:14:43. > :14:48.A*. I am amazed at that. I got an A* and three As. Where it is taking
:14:48. > :14:53.you. Oxford. We do our best to support students so the pressure is
:14:53. > :14:56.leaved somewhat, but clearly, students are worried, their offers
:14:56. > :15:00.from the university are higher, it is a lot of pressure on them and
:15:00. > :15:05.thank goodness they are able to step up to the mark, we should be
:15:05. > :15:11.very proud of our young people. They work incredibly hard, and they
:15:11. > :15:16.deserve this success. The yaids are crucial. Ian swan wants to read
:15:16. > :15:19.medicine. I got my results but I missed my grades. The assistant
:15:19. > :15:25.head gin Jones said I will phone up the universitys for you and he did
:15:25. > :15:29.that, came up, Fife minutes later and said I've got you in so I was
:15:29. > :15:34.happy. Here at Huddersfield university staff handled the
:15:34. > :15:38.anxious kuefls students and teachers looking for places through
:15:38. > :15:44.clearing. This year it will be works because some universities
:15:44. > :15:54.aren't offering any clearing places at all. At York there is a mood of
:15:54. > :15:55.
:15:55. > :15:59.celebration. Their pass rate is 99.3%. Their best ever. Simon Lock
:15:59. > :16:03.is like most other 18-year-old students but unlike most of his
:16:03. > :16:07.peers he has already turned down a place at university. Not that he
:16:07. > :16:13.doesn't have big dreams but he is taking a different route. He has
:16:13. > :16:18.won an apprenticeship with a difference and one that will see
:16:18. > :16:22.him qualify as an accountant a year ahead of his university bound pals.
:16:22. > :16:26.I will have experienced working for company and I think I will have had
:16:26. > :16:33.a good time. I think that is a better position to be in in three
:16:33. > :16:38.years time, having gone university and still not be qualified. This
:16:39. > :16:42.isn't the first time multi-national accountancy firm has offered the
:16:42. > :16:45.training but it is something the company is expecting to be more
:16:45. > :16:49.popular. They learn, they study, they develop with the business and
:16:49. > :16:53.they get paid. That has great advantages for us as a business. We
:16:53. > :16:56.can take on quality people. Get them early, help mould them into
:16:56. > :17:00.the way we like to do things and the way we look to look after
:17:00. > :17:04.clients so it's a win-win for everybody. Of course
:17:04. > :17:07.apprenticeships are not for everybody. In fact very few people
:17:07. > :17:12.made the kind of grades Simon had to achieve to secure his place here.
:17:12. > :17:17.But, since he starts work next week, this teenager didn't have to stress
:17:17. > :17:27.over today's results, nor will he have to stress about finding a job
:17:27. > :17:27.
:17:27. > :17:33.in these competitive economic days. Or a big bill at the end of it.
:17:33. > :17:38.Well, with us now is Professor Peter Slee and A-level student
:17:38. > :17:43.Edward Addison who has a pretty amazing story to tell. You would
:17:43. > :17:49.normally be cock-a-hoop tonight. But it is more complicated. I got
:17:49. > :17:55.one A and five A*s. Shall we go? However, you set your sights on
:17:55. > :18:02.Oxford and that wasn't good enough was it? No, it wasn't. I applied
:18:02. > :18:07.for university this year, and I had three rejections, from Oxford,
:18:07. > :18:11.Imperial College London, but it hasn't gone to plan, it hasn't gone
:18:11. > :18:16.right. How do you feel about that, after all that work? Because the
:18:16. > :18:21.application process was a long process rbgsz and after of it to
:18:21. > :18:26.get noes it is defeating. Are your celebrating your results? I am.
:18:26. > :18:29.decided to have a gap year which means many more thousands of pounds
:18:29. > :18:34.of fees. It was a big decision. you think long and hard? It was a
:18:34. > :18:40.long and hard decision to make. Very tough, I had to get lots of
:18:40. > :18:46.advice, I had people telling me different things. You are still
:18:46. > :18:49.going to go for Oxford. I am going to try. Let us know how you get on.
:18:49. > :18:53.U Huddersfield university renowned as a community university, this is
:18:53. > :18:58.the year, you can understand why the kids are trying to get in this
:18:58. > :19:03.year. Yes, you can, yes. How has the fact so many more people have
:19:03. > :19:06.been, not doing what Edward is doing, not doing that at all,
:19:06. > :19:09.saying forget yore gap years how has that impact on the amount of
:19:09. > :19:14.places available? We have the same available as last year but there
:19:14. > :19:19.has been greater demand for them. We had a 13% increase in the number
:19:19. > :19:24.of students. Are you full? We are. Hang on. Let us thereon that for a
:19:24. > :19:30.moment. That is today, normally you can have two, three, four days
:19:30. > :19:33.clearing. We are hearing that everyone is full. So lots of
:19:33. > :19:37.disappointment. There will. You will have heard on the news there,
:19:37. > :19:41.that last year 200,000 people who applied to university ended up not
:19:41. > :19:44.going. This year the figure will be higher but that is a matter of
:19:44. > :19:48.Government policy and the amount of places available to young people.
:19:48. > :19:53.So Edward is going to wait a year. Presumably lots of students in that
:19:53. > :19:59.position, but not everybody will be able to take on that level of debt,
:19:59. > :20:03.will they, when they Go graduate? We all agree it is unfortunate, by
:20:03. > :20:07.missing a year, Edward will, as he is working pay back more over his
:20:07. > :20:13.lifetime. I would be so mad, if I missed it by a year, do you know,
:20:13. > :20:18.thinking of somebody I know, a friend of mine whose son got great
:20:18. > :20:23.AS-levels he has missed by a year. Do you think in years to come you
:20:23. > :20:26.offer value for money? I do. It is important for all those people
:20:26. > :20:30.watching now, who would like to go to university, it is important to
:20:30. > :20:34.remember you don't have to bring a bag of cash with you. It is free at
:20:34. > :20:41.the point of entry. You pay back after you start earning and only
:20:41. > :20:46.after you are earning more than 21,000 a year. So when he
:20:46. > :20:51.graduates... We will have to leave it there. I know we will revisit
:20:51. > :20:57.this one. Well done and I am glad you are full. We have a really
:20:57. > :21:02.interesting piece now. This is the ancient art of caligraphy. It has
:21:02. > :21:12.been given a twist. Its art is Sara Mack who is earn kudgeing people to
:21:12. > :21:23.
