:00:13. > :00:17.Good Evening: Parts of the region are battered by winds of up to

:00:17. > :00:22.70mph. Also, please tell us more - parents say they're kept in the

:00:22. > :00:27.dark about nursery arrests. And we'll meet the trial biker who

:00:27. > :00:32.survived this 40 foot fall and lives to tell the tale.

:00:32. > :00:42.The Met office still have a warning in place for gales or severe gales.

:00:42. > :00:46.

:00:46. > :00:51.Join me later for the latest. Good Evening. Tonight, it's been a wild

:00:51. > :00:55.start to the week with gale force winds bringing trees down across

:00:55. > :00:59.Yorkshire. Traffic restrictions have been in place and gusts of

:00:59. > :01:04.nearly 70mph are expected. We have just heard a young boy has

:01:04. > :01:08.been taken to hospital after a roof blew off at a garage in Queensbury

:01:08. > :01:13.near Bradford. He's said to have serious but not life-threatening

:01:13. > :01:17.injuries. More on that later. We'll have the latest from Ian who

:01:17. > :01:21.is in West Yorkshire. First, South Yorkshire's story.

:01:21. > :01:25.The morning rush hour saw the worst of the winds in Sheffield. Luckily,

:01:25. > :01:32.the people living here were on the school run when this tree crashed

:01:32. > :01:37.into their front garden and came to rest right next to their house.

:01:37. > :01:43.It could have been much worse. It looked pretty epic at the time, but

:01:43. > :01:48.on further inspection, I could see that it was actually more cosmetic.

:01:48. > :01:53.And over in Woodseats, a popular tree became a victim of the strong

:01:53. > :01:56.winds. It even has a pub named after it, but this morning, the top

:01:56. > :02:02.part snapped, forcing the landlady to call on some of the regulars for

:02:02. > :02:06.help. With the tree no longer safe, the rest had to be cut down. It's

:02:06. > :02:11.very sad. We moan about this tree every year because it's tremendous,

:02:11. > :02:15.you know, the leaves trying to clean it up and that, we do it

:02:15. > :02:19.three times a day, but now we have no tree to clean up. Staff at

:02:19. > :02:23.Sheffield City Council have been kept busy and have had 46 emergency

:02:23. > :02:28.call outs since this morning, all related to problems caused by the

:02:28. > :02:31.wind. At least five trees across the city have fallen, fortunately

:02:31. > :02:34.no-one's been injured. We have got quite a lot of trees.

:02:34. > :02:38.In one sense, we are extremely lucky that we live in such a green

:02:38. > :02:42.city, but then again probably that brings more risk when you have

:02:42. > :02:47.things like hurricanes and wild winds.

:02:47. > :02:53.This evening, the winds have eased, but autumn has most definitely

:02:53. > :02:56.arrived. Thanks Emma. Ian has been out in

:02:57. > :03:01.West Yorkshire with the latest on the conditions there.

:03:01. > :03:06.The sign says it all. This was the centre of Leeds today. The roads

:03:06. > :03:10.around Yorkshire's tallest building, Bridgwater plaice, closed to buses

:03:10. > :03:15.and high-sided vehicles as winds battered the city. In North

:03:15. > :03:18.Yorkshire, safety concerns led to the city closing five parks. This

:03:18. > :03:23.branch came crashing down while we were filming. We had a couple of

:03:23. > :03:29.trees come down a couple of years ago here and we have been stood

:03:29. > :03:32.here and seen debris blowing across the park, brarge branches. The

:03:32. > :03:40.University of York has been monitoring the wund speeds and have

:03:40. > :03:49.reported a speed of 49.3 -- wind speeds. Making a trip to the city

:03:49. > :03:53.centre was hard work for many. lady, I caught her in time. It can

:03:53. > :03:58.be very dangerous. We were blown across the road actually and I was

:03:58. > :04:02.blown off that seat nearly there. I just managed to sit down.

:04:02. > :04:05.Emergency services say the best place to be tonight is at home and

:04:05. > :04:11.that you shouldn't travel unless you have to.

:04:11. > :04:16.We were hoping to go to Ian White leave near Wetherby but the wind

:04:16. > :04:20.has taken him off air. So information on the travel now. Not

:04:20. > :04:24.surprisingly, problems for Leeds Bradford Airport. Four flights have

:04:24. > :04:30.had to be diverted there. Very difficult to land the planes down.

:04:30. > :04:39.That looks pretty hairy that one. If you ever come into Leeds

:04:39. > :04:45.Bradford on a normal day, it can be lopsided. The M1 is closed near

:04:45. > :04:50.Tyldesley viaduct. 40mph wind restrictions on the M62. And the

:04:50. > :04:54.trens Pennine routes, Wood Pass closed to high side id vehicles.

:04:54. > :04:58.The main line from Halifax to Manchester is closed while they

:04:58. > :05:02.remove branches. The line is open but no real delays. They've had

:05:02. > :05:07.problems on that one. If you are heading west, you may be delayed.

:05:07. > :05:09.If heading east, you should be OK. Also a lot of problems on the East

:05:09. > :05:19.Coast Main Line. If you have any problems or photos

:05:19. > :05:35.

:05:35. > :05:40.Also tonight, parents are demanding to know why two nurseries in York

:05:40. > :05:42.are being investigated. Six women who work at the privately run

:05:42. > :05:46.nurseries, Little Joes and Heworth House, have been arrested. Police

:05:46. > :05:50.say there's no suggestion of spews, but parents haven't been told

:05:50. > :05:53.exactly what is being investigated. One family who've continued to use

:05:53. > :05:59.the nursery say they need more information to make an informed

:05:59. > :06:03.decision about their daughter's care.

:06:03. > :06:07.The Westons just want what is best for their three-year-old. A police

:06:07. > :06:10.investigation at her York nursery, Heworth House, has left them worry

:06:10. > :06:14.and confused. Although very happy with the care Ruby's had at the

:06:14. > :06:20.nursery, dad Justin wants to know what is under investigation so he

:06:20. > :06:23.can do what's best for his little girl. Very frustrated with the lack

:06:23. > :06:27.of information coming from the agencies involved. Nobody's spoken

:06:27. > :06:31.to us about the allegations to see if they even affect our child.

:06:31. > :06:35.Nobody's explained to us exactly what the allegations are. Nobody's

:06:35. > :06:40.keeping us informed. It's more than two weeks since

:06:40. > :06:43.North Yorkshire police, Ofsted and York City Council started an

:06:43. > :06:47.investigation into Heworth House and Little Joes nurseries. Parents

:06:47. > :06:50.were informed by letter and last week, six staff members were

:06:50. > :06:54.arrested and released on bail. The City of York Safeguarding Children

:06:54. > :06:58.Board is working with both nurseries and the investigators to

:06:58. > :07:01.ensure the children are safe. There's increased monitoring and

:07:01. > :07:06.some recommended changes have been implemented. But the nature of the

:07:06. > :07:10.alleged problems here remains a secret. The board says that making

:07:10. > :07:13.too much information public could compromise the investigation.

:07:13. > :07:17.If there's been any serious allegations, the nursery would have

:07:18. > :07:23.been closed down. On this occasion, the nurseries aren't closed and at

:07:23. > :07:26.this stage, it's an investigation. I think parents need to take that

:07:26. > :07:30.into account. The allegations do not relate to

:07:30. > :07:35.sexual abuse, but in the absence of clear information, families like

:07:35. > :07:40.the Westons face a difficult choice. Disrupt their child's care by

:07:40. > :07:46.withdrawing them or stick with the nursery that could be having

:07:46. > :07:50.problems... Later on Look North: You are in the

:07:50. > :07:55.army now. Part-time soldiers prepare for war as the territorials

:07:56. > :07:59.are called up. If you know anything about trial

:07:59. > :08:04.biking, you will have heard of Chris ago rig, six times national

:08:04. > :08:09.champion in his sport. It's an extreme business and when it goes

:08:09. > :08:14.wrong, it can be catastrophic. Chris from Keighley tackled the

:08:14. > :08:19.Yorkshire Daily Mail rocks when he fell 40 foot. He is recovering now.

:08:19. > :08:29.He is here to tell us about it let's see the moment though when it

:08:29. > :08:35.

:08:35. > :08:40.Extraordinary isn't it? Incredible. What is it like for you watching

:08:40. > :08:44.that back again? I've watched it a lot now so it doesn't bother me. It

:08:44. > :08:48.took a couple of weeks to pluck up the courage to watch it the first

:08:48. > :08:55.time. I think my parents took a couple of more weeks before they

:08:55. > :09:01.watched it. But yes,... Your story is on Helicopter Heroes tomorrow

:09:01. > :09:05.Chris? Yes. It was a tricky rescue. Talk us through it? Yes, when I

:09:05. > :09:09.landed, it was quite a nasty bit of cropy rocks. The helicopter

:09:09. > :09:12.couldn't get to the base of the cliff so they had to land at the

:09:12. > :09:16.top and the land ambulance came from the bottom so they had to

:09:16. > :09:21.climb from the rocks to get to me. You get a sense of how difficulties

:09:21. > :09:26.for them to get to you there? I didn't pick a very good place to

:09:26. > :09:30.fall. I didn't anticipate that happening but... You could see your

:09:30. > :09:34.bike there. How did you feel at that moment? Were you aware of what

:09:34. > :09:38.was happening or not? I felt a little stupid to be honest. It

:09:38. > :09:42.hadn't crossed my mind you know that it might look a little

:09:42. > :09:47.wreckless on the video, but I'd planned everything out and

:09:47. > :09:52.everything looked on paper and in my head like it would go well. So I

:09:52. > :09:58.felt stupid when it went that way really. What injuries did you

:09:58. > :10:02.sustain? Landed on a rock and I broke my femur pretty badly and

:10:02. > :10:08.cracked the top of my raidious as well. So they popped a little screw

:10:08. > :10:12.in there so that's bang on now, is that, and they've put a full length

:10:12. > :10:15.steel rod inside my femur and screwed that back together. Are you

:10:15. > :10:20.going to go back to doing that kind of thing? Can't wait. Obviously

:10:20. > :10:25.I've got to get my head down now. The bone's strong now, nice and

:10:25. > :10:29.solid, so I need to get my head down over winter, put the hours in.

:10:29. > :10:34.You do some pretty hair-raising stuff don't you? Yes, it's got to

:10:34. > :10:39.the point where it's getting sketchy, yes. Those pictures, well,

:10:39. > :10:43.yeah! What is it about the sport that you love? It's just because

:10:43. > :10:46.I've done it for such a long time, I don't feel like it's dangerous

:10:46. > :10:52.any more, it's just logical progression. In your youth, you go

:10:52. > :10:56.up little curbs and then you go up a big wall and the next minute you

:10:56. > :11:01.are going off cliffs with ambulances picking you up -- going

:11:01. > :11:04.up little kerbs. Thank goodness you are well and good luck with your

:11:04. > :11:11.recovery. You can see the full story of

:11:11. > :11:15.Chris's rescue on Helicopter Heroes tomorrow morning.

:11:15. > :11:19.5,000 motorists have been fined for using bus lanes in Leeds in the

:11:19. > :11:23.past month. The drivers were caught on new cameras introduced to stop

:11:24. > :11:28.people flouting the rules. Each fine is 60 reduced to 30 if paid

:11:28. > :11:32.within two weeks. The tickets add up to at least 150,000.

:11:32. > :11:37.Some of North Yorkshire's tourist attractions will shut down during

:11:37. > :11:40.the winter. English Heritage have had to cut opening hours of

:11:40. > :11:43.Clifford's tower in York and Scarborough Castle because the

:11:43. > :11:48.Government grants have been reduced bid nearly a third. TA soldiers

:11:48. > :11:53.from Yorkshire are saying goodbye as they leave for active service in

:11:53. > :11:57.Afghanistan. The volunteer troops are part of the Fourth Battalion

:11:57. > :12:02.the Yorkshire Regiment and have been training for four months.

:12:02. > :12:06.They say their farewells before they go to serve in Helmand for six

:12:06. > :12:10.months. We went to meet their families. At home with his family

:12:10. > :12:13.for one last weekend. Darren will soon be saying goodbye and heading

:12:13. > :12:18.for Afghanistan. It's probably not the most rational

:12:18. > :12:22.thing to do, but you sort of get inspiration from people who've done

:12:22. > :12:27.it, whether they're regular forces or TA and, you know, again, you

:12:27. > :12:32.get... I do have an overwhelming sense of duty. It feels right for

:12:33. > :12:38.me. It's going to be a challenge, definitely. For the next six months,

:12:38. > :12:42.he's putting on hold his work as a buyer for Morrison's, his love of

:12:42. > :12:47.the Dewsbury Rams and his role as a father and husband. Do you

:12:47. > :12:50.understand why he does it? He's always wanted to do it and I don't

:12:50. > :12:55.think you could ever change him. It's something that's in you I

:12:55. > :12:59.think and he's proud to do it and I'm proud of him. I am nervous,

:12:59. > :13:03.anxious, trying to make the best of it, but we are just on countdown,

:13:03. > :13:07.we know he's going at the weekend so he's trying to make the best of

:13:07. > :13:12.it but it's upsetting. It will be tough to say goodbye but I think if

:13:12. > :13:17.you are positive about it and think that I'm not the first one to do it,

:13:17. > :13:21.I won't be the last, and if you think about going away brings you

:13:21. > :13:26.much closer to your family, I think unless you are going away and faced

:13:26. > :13:31.with these things, you don't quite realise how much you love your

:13:31. > :13:34.family. Over in Huddersfield, Captain Steve Jones is also

:13:34. > :13:38.preparing for his first tour of duty.

:13:38. > :13:42.It's something that I've trained to do for a long time. For me never to

:13:42. > :13:47.have the opportunity to put that into practise would be a difficult

:13:47. > :13:53.thing to come to terms with. I think it's more the ask that I'm

:13:53. > :13:58.putting on other people that is the big deal for myself, quite selfish

:13:58. > :14:01.I suppose, but it's who I am, it's what I know, what I enjoy doing.

:14:01. > :14:06.They're making the most of the time they have left. By the end of the

:14:06. > :14:13.month, they'll be on the frontline in Helmand province.

:14:13. > :14:18.The sort of advice I've had is to keep low, move fast, and I shall be

:14:18. > :14:24.doing that. You know, God willing, you know, get back all safe and

:14:24. > :14:30.sound and have many years of frustration watching the Rams.

:14:30. > :14:34.Let's hope they have a safe trip. Before 7, James calls it a day.

:14:34. > :14:40.Toseland talks to us for the first time after quitting his sport

:14:40. > :14:44.through injury. And, would you buy a used car off this man?

:14:44. > :14:47.We know journalists always tell the truth, right. Join me at the

:14:47. > :14:57.Bradford science festival in the quest for honesty as I'm put

:14:57. > :15:02.

:15:02. > :15:06.That looked surreal that. We should try that. Now the sport.

:15:06. > :15:09.Yorkshire county cricket have been put out of their misery? Yes,

:15:09. > :15:12.finally relegated officially. We have been saying it for at least a

:15:12. > :15:19.week now, but Worcestershire got the three bowling points they

:15:19. > :15:23.needed and it's official, Yorkshire will be playing division two.

:15:23. > :15:28.Leeds came out fighting? Yes, and they have a lot of good young

:15:28. > :15:33.players coming through. Some of the more optimistic of us are still

:15:33. > :15:37.hopeful that they can bounce back next year.

:15:37. > :15:46.On to this weekend's football now and we've only just started the

:15:46. > :15:50.season but already there are some high flyers and well strugglers.

:15:50. > :15:56.One win from five in the league before they took on Crystal Palace.

:15:56. > :16:00.Another defeat would have meant Leeds' worst start for 30 years so

:16:00. > :16:10.a relief when the men went in front. But two goals from the visitors

:16:10. > :16:18.

:16:18. > :16:22.McCormack struck twice. 3-2 Leeds and the mood brightened. At

:16:22. > :16:27.Oakfield, Barnsley clinched their first home win of the season in a

:16:27. > :16:37.draw against Leicester City. O'Driscoll admits his team must

:16:37. > :16:38.

:16:38. > :16:48.In League One, Wednesday were undefeated at home and face a test

:16:48. > :16:51.

:16:51. > :16:55.against top of the table MK Dons. The Blades benefitted from the

:16:55. > :16:59.Hillsborough result and drew at Scunthorpe.

:16:59. > :17:03.United replaced MK Dons at the top of the table.

:17:03. > :17:12.On the south coast, Chesterfield earned their first win of the

:17:12. > :17:22.season at struggling Bournemouth. Huddersfield came away with three

:17:22. > :17:27.

:17:27. > :17:32.In League Two, Flynn rescued a point for the Bantams. He converted

:17:32. > :17:38.two penalties, the last in stoppage time to earn a draw against Bristol

:17:39. > :17:44.Rovers. Rotherham got three in the first half and despite a

:17:44. > :17:47.consolation goal by Dagenham, they still got the three points.

:17:47. > :17:50.Let's hope they can keep up the run. In Rugby League, Castleford may

:17:50. > :17:56.have lost out to Hull KR in the race for the play-offs, but there

:17:56. > :17:59.was good news for them today. Their stand-off makes his debut in Super

:17:59. > :18:02.League's Dream Team. The 13 players are considered best in their

:18:02. > :18:11.position over the course of the season. He's the only player from

:18:11. > :18:16.our five clubs to make it in. In York, golf, Simon's moved up to

:18:16. > :18:19.the top 30 in the world for the first time in his career after

:18:19. > :18:23.clinching his third Dutch Open in six years and won it by a single

:18:23. > :18:27.shot. With less than a year to go to the

:18:27. > :18:32.London Olympics, the Brownlee brothers sit on top of the

:18:32. > :18:35.triathlon world. In Beijing, Alastair won the race to regain the

:18:35. > :18:38.World Championship title while Jonathan finished third but secured

:18:38. > :18:44.enough points to finish the World Series second overall. It's like

:18:45. > :18:49.running for treacle to be honest. Me and Johnny weren't feeling great.

:18:49. > :18:54.But I wanted to try and keep him in with me but I realised I had to go

:18:54. > :18:59.on the last lap. I was glad to cross the line. Well done to them.

:18:59. > :19:03.Many of you know already that double world champion James

:19:03. > :19:06.Toseland announced his retirement from world motor racing last Friday

:19:06. > :19:10.after suffering a career-ending injury. He crashed earlier this

:19:10. > :19:20.year, nearly paralysing his wrist. He's been back in the region and I

:19:20. > :19:20.

:19:20. > :19:25.caught up with him over the weekend. South Yorkshire's double world

:19:25. > :19:31.champion won the first of his super bike titles, aged just 23. He

:19:31. > :19:34.became the youngest rider ever to lift the trophy.

:19:34. > :19:40.His successes and rise in popularity on and off the racetrack

:19:40. > :19:44.led him to securing a contract in the ultimate bike racing

:19:44. > :19:49.competition, MotoGP. But two injury-hit years saw him return to

:19:49. > :19:54.World Superbikes and ultimately, injury would cut his career short.

:19:54. > :19:59.Unfortunately, I crashed in Oregon back at the beginning of March. I

:19:59. > :20:03.only had 24 hours before I could have been paralysed so to even get

:20:03. > :20:07.back on a bike after the injury was amazing but unfortunately, the

:20:07. > :20:12.movement in the wrist has not come back since the operation and I

:20:12. > :20:15.can't ride the bike any more. To win two World Championships and to

:20:15. > :20:19.work with so many fantastic people and the support I've had from the

:20:19. > :20:22.fans as well has been incredible. James was back in the region in

:20:22. > :20:29.Chesterfield to launch his brother's new property business,

:20:29. > :20:33.along with his new girlfriend, singer song writer Katie Melua. I

:20:33. > :20:38.took my mum to one of her concerts because she really likes her music

:20:38. > :20:42.and I do. I met the band and Katie at the next gig and it's been going

:20:42. > :20:48.well since then. We know how talented James is when it comes to

:20:48. > :20:53.tinkling the ivories, but what's Katie's opinion? He's phenomenal on
