:00:08. > :00:13.Hello. Welcome to Wednesday's Look North. Tonight, the right to stand

:00:13. > :00:19.and watch football. Should German-style terraces be

:00:19. > :00:24.introduced here? One campaigner who was at the Hillsborough disaster,

:00:24. > :00:30.says definitely not. A war veteran's precious memories - we

:00:31. > :00:38.speak to the soldier who lost both his legs in Afghanistan and has had

:00:38. > :00:42.his prize possessions stolen by burglars. I fight for and my own

:00:42. > :00:47.people, but the only thing I've got, this is the only thing I've got.

:00:47. > :00:54.And the tree of life. The latest David Hockney creation is unveiled

:00:54. > :01:00.at a new exhibition in Saltaire. The Sheffield skyline was cloudy

:01:00. > :01:10.when these shots were taken. More sunshine to come tomorrow. All the

:01:10. > :01:11.

:01:11. > :01:16.details coming up. Hello, good evening. Tonight, a

:01:16. > :01:20.football fan who witnessed the Hillsborough disaster has been in

:01:21. > :01:26.Westminster trying to persuade MPs not to bring back standing at top-

:01:26. > :01:36.flight matches. Barbara King, who lives in

:01:36. > :01:36.

:01:36. > :01:45.Eckington, says reintroducing The dreadful images that shocked

:01:45. > :01:50.the world and changed English football. 96 Liverpool fans died at

:01:50. > :01:55.Hillsborough. As a direct result of the disaster at Sheffield

:01:55. > :02:05.Wednesday's grounds terraces was banned in the top two leagues and

:02:05. > :02:07.

:02:07. > :02:14.all seater stands were introduced. It has caused controversy,

:02:14. > :02:19.especially among those who were at Hillsborough,. Football is a family

:02:19. > :02:25.thing. That is how it needs to stay, a family occasion, where we can go

:02:25. > :02:31.out and enjoy a decent football game, and not having to worry about

:02:31. > :02:36.being hurt. It is the football supporters' federation which is

:02:36. > :02:42.pushing terraceing. Standing is allowed in the German league

:02:42. > :02:46.address barriers are installed between rows to stop surges. The

:02:46. > :02:50.FSF is not alone. Don foster is in favour of standing

:02:50. > :02:54.and is trying to get a Bill through Parliament to give clubs the option

:02:54. > :02:57.of bringing it back. What we are proposing is a system whereby you

:02:57. > :03:03.have a safe standing, it means every single person will have a

:03:03. > :03:08.barrier in front of him or her. There'll be a drop-down seat.

:03:08. > :03:15.Barbara met the MP to discuss the issue. She was not convinced by his

:03:15. > :03:20.argument. Don foster is on about passing it on to safety officers to

:03:20. > :03:24.work on it. He has not seen it for himself. They should not pass the

:03:24. > :03:29.buck. I would like to be involved because I was there at Hillsborough

:03:29. > :03:33.when it happened. The Government says it is not supporting the Bill

:03:33. > :03:36.and the prep year league and FA say they are happy with things the way

:03:36. > :03:42.they are. With the parliamentary committee set to debate terraceing

:03:42. > :03:46.next year, the issue is not likely to go away.

:03:47. > :03:51.Martin O'Hara is with us from the Football Supporters' Federation.

:03:51. > :03:55.You are in the Sheffield office, not far from where the awful event

:03:55. > :04:01.happened. Why do you want to stand again? It is not a case of why I

:04:01. > :04:06.want to stand again. At every single football match in the

:04:06. > :04:09.country people are standing. They have been standing for the past 0

:04:09. > :04:13.years. Lord Justice Taylor said we would get used sitting in the seats

:04:13. > :04:18.and enjoy football from there. Unfortunately, that has not

:04:18. > :04:19.happened. People are still continuing to stand all the time.

:04:19. > :04:25.Can you understand why it is such an emotive issue, especially in

:04:25. > :04:30.this part of the world. Trevor Hicks from the Hillsborough

:04:30. > :04:34.Family Support Group says, "there is no case for it. It is a step

:04:34. > :04:40.backwards." What you have to remember is Lord Justice Taylor did

:04:40. > :04:44.not say that standing caused any of the Hillsborough tragedy at all. He

:04:44. > :04:49.focused on policing and poor stadium design and those were the

:04:49. > :04:53.issues for Lord Justice Taylor, not standing. So, we have standing

:04:53. > :04:57.today. We still have it. We have knit the two lower divisions. We

:04:57. > :05:01.don't have it in the upper two divisions, although people do stand.

:05:01. > :05:05.What you have to understand from there is if you look at the safety

:05:05. > :05:08.figures there's no difference between the safety figures produced

:05:08. > :05:13.for standing at a football ground and sitting at a football ground.

:05:14. > :05:18.The FLA and the police accept there is no difference in safety

:05:19. > :05:26.standards whatsoever. The football league and Premier League say all-

:05:26. > :05:31.seating staid ya has made the game a more family-orientated sport. If

:05:31. > :05:36.we had standing would that make it less so? I don't understand that

:05:36. > :05:40.argument either. Nobody is suching we go from all siting to all

:05:40. > :05:45.standing. What we are suggesting is we have standing areas for people

:05:45. > :05:48.who want to stand. Women and children can still sit at football

:05:48. > :05:52.grounds. We don't suggest they have to go into standing areas. If you

:05:52. > :05:55.stand outside any stadium in this country which still has standing

:05:55. > :05:58.areas, you will see women and children entering those standing

:05:58. > :06:02.areas. They are making the choice to go in there any way.

:06:02. > :06:06.We will have to leave it there. Thanks for joining us this evening.

:06:06. > :06:12.As ever, we would like to hear your views. Also tonight, police in

:06:12. > :06:19.Leeds are asking for help from the city's criminals to help track down

:06:19. > :06:24.a gang of thieves who broke into a -- an injured soldier's home.

:06:24. > :06:28.Lee Midgley stepped on a landmine, when he lost both his legs. In

:06:28. > :06:32.January last year Lee Midgley's life changed forever. He stepped on

:06:32. > :06:36.a mine while serving in Afghanistan. He suffered horrific injuries. On

:06:36. > :06:42.Monday, he returned home from a shopping trip with his fiance to

:06:42. > :06:45.find their house had been broken into. DVDs were taken, a camera and

:06:45. > :06:54.sentimental things like pictures from Afghanistan and his military

:06:54. > :07:00.dog tags. It makes me remember who I used to be. I was fit, fit. I

:07:00. > :07:09.could go anywhere and it's been taken. It's put so much stress on

:07:09. > :07:12.me. I have so much any way that's bad and wrong. Police say they

:07:12. > :07:16.believe people in Leeds's criminal community will know who is

:07:16. > :07:20.responsible. They are asking for their help. The answer for this

:07:20. > :07:24.crime lies with them. They should do the right thing and search their

:07:24. > :07:29.conscience. You know who's responsible. You have to soul-

:07:29. > :07:34.search and do the right thing. did I go over and fight for, to

:07:34. > :07:41.come back home and my own people rob and take what, the only thing

:07:41. > :07:46.I've got. It's the only thing I've got. I was a big, strong lad. I

:07:46. > :07:51.used to be able to defend myself. But now I feel vulnerable. I feel

:07:51. > :07:57.like I can't even protect my own girlfriend, which is my world. I

:07:57. > :08:01.love her to bits. I feel I can't even protect her. What can I do?

:08:01. > :08:11.Can't do nothing! That's been took away from me. Now they have come

:08:11. > :08:12.

:08:12. > :08:16.and took this away from me. Lee Midgley. It is awful. Let's

:08:17. > :08:20.hope he can get those stolen possessions back. Stay with us. We

:08:20. > :08:25.have more tonight, including fascinating science in Bradford.

:08:25. > :08:30.Come in Amanda. About lutely, lots to see and do

:08:30. > :08:36.here in Bradford, from tantalising your taste buds to the laws of

:08:36. > :08:40.attraction. Join us later from the Festival of Science. Thank you.

:08:40. > :08:43.More news from around Yorkshire. Staff working at two York nurseries

:08:43. > :08:49.which are under investigation say the allegations came out of the

:08:49. > :08:52.blue, and they still don't know what they are. The parents of

:08:53. > :08:56.children at how worth House were given letters by the owner, Lynn

:08:57. > :09:01.Drydal. It said allegations had been made against a number of staff

:09:01. > :09:06.concerning the quality of care and welfare of children. Yorkshire

:09:06. > :09:09.Police and the council say they do not relate to sexual abuse.

:09:09. > :09:14.open is these outstanding investigations, enquiries can be

:09:14. > :09:20.dealt with as soon as possible and we can know what the issues are, so

:09:20. > :09:23.that we can put parents' minds at ease. The authorities have to go

:09:23. > :09:29.through due process, but that creates that period of uncertainty.

:09:29. > :09:39.I think, unfortunately, it creates additional anxiety for Lynn, as

:09:39. > :09:40.

:09:40. > :09:45.much as anything, obviously the parents and the staff and the

:09:45. > :09:52.children. There are 243,000 jobless in

:09:52. > :09:58.Yorkshire and the Humber. That is a rise of 6,000. The unemployment

:09:58. > :10:05.rate stands at.1%, the same as this -- 9.1%. The same as this time last

:10:05. > :10:11.year. Vaubg vaubg vaubg says walking the -- Michael Vaughan says

:10:11. > :10:18.walking the Great Wall of China will be a triumph of. He has a

:10:18. > :10:22.dodgy knee, like me. He is rising money for hospital.

:10:22. > :10:26.His own daughter is a patient. have been in Sheffield for 27 years.

:10:26. > :10:30.My wife worked in a hospital. We had our three kids all in this

:10:30. > :10:33.hospital. I have always been close to kids. I have a Cricket Academy

:10:33. > :10:37.in Sheffield as well. I want to make sure that the hospital stays

:10:37. > :10:41.as it has been for the time I've been growing up. The three kids

:10:41. > :10:45.we've had were treated remarkably well. We are very fortunate that

:10:45. > :10:49.all three of our kids have been very healthy. Today we are here

:10:49. > :10:53.because my eldest has had her tonsils out. I've been here all

:10:53. > :10:57.morning. It's been a great hospital in terms of what they gave us. I

:10:57. > :11:01.wanted to give something back. I wanted to choose a charity,

:11:01. > :11:04.particularly when I finish playing and donate time and try and make a

:11:04. > :11:08.difference. You get involved in so many things without really making a

:11:08. > :11:11.difference. I thought I want to help this hospital as much as I can

:11:12. > :11:17.and raise as much awareness, profile and ultimately money to

:11:17. > :11:21.make sure that it stays to the standard it has for many years.

:11:21. > :11:26.100,000 already in, target 250,000. So it's going well. How

:11:26. > :11:30.is the training then? Training has been walking the dogs every now and

:11:30. > :11:35.again. I have been busy with the cricket, so I'm hoping the knee

:11:35. > :11:38.will stand the wall of China. I have been delighted with everyone's

:11:38. > :11:43.response, particularly around Sheffield. Obviously mates as well,

:11:43. > :11:49.who backed us. There's plenty more money to be raised. If anyone feels

:11:49. > :11:54.they can doate anything, we do appreciate it. The figure is

:11:54. > :12:00.20250,000. It is a lot of money. We have got to 100,000. Hopefully

:12:00. > :12:03.we can get there in the next few weeks. How is your little girl?

:12:03. > :12:07.has some ice cream. It is a healer for the tonsils out. She is up and

:12:07. > :12:11.around. They do a great job here. They looked after her. When I had

:12:11. > :12:14.my tonsils out many years ago I can't remember laughing before the

:12:14. > :12:22.operation. They managed to make her laugh before she went in.

:12:22. > :12:28.Thanks. Thanks. Bless him! Honestly a good

:12:28. > :12:36.cause. Sheffield children's hospital, great wall of hospital.

:12:36. > :12:38.A round up of last night's football action, including the Yorkshire

:12:38. > :12:45.Derby where Huddersfield Town came out winners.

:12:45. > :12:52.The David Hockney portraits, part of his latest exhibition in

:12:53. > :12:58.Saltaire. I love David Hockney. I can't wait

:12:58. > :13:01.for that shall we stay in Bradford? The week of scientific debates has

:13:01. > :13:11.been continuing today at the British Science Festival, where

:13:11. > :13:15.

:13:15. > :13:25.Now me and you are going to be guinea pigs ago -- again. It's all

:13:25. > :13:27.

:13:27. > :13:36.about the science of the senses. What is it supposed to taste like?

:13:36. > :13:43.It depends on your genetic make-up. What does it taste like? Anything?

:13:43. > :13:53.I think it tastes a bit like an aspirin. What do you think? It is a

:13:53. > :13:54.

:13:54. > :14:02.bit like that. It's bouquet. What does that make me? I'm not entirely

:14:02. > :14:06.sure! It is amazing how much information you can glean from a

:14:06. > :14:12.little piece of paper like this. There is a man here who can tell me

:14:12. > :14:17.all about the signs of taste. Our presenters in the studio tonight

:14:17. > :14:27.said they could taste aspirin, what does that mean? How well you can

:14:27. > :14:31.taste is genetically determined to a large extent. There is a chemical,

:14:31. > :14:37.if you get a mild bitter taste from it, it means you have one copy of

:14:38. > :14:44.this gene, which is the same with the majority of the population.

:14:44. > :14:49.Normal taste, I'm afraid. Before we go any further, I have to ask you

:14:50. > :14:59.about your make-up. What exactly is it? This is to explain how the

:14:59. > :15:08.sense of taste works. They have been testing the basic tastes. But

:15:08. > :15:18.for every other flavour that you know, you need your nose as well.

:15:18. > :15:25.You get an air movement to your nose -- nasal cavity. We must move

:15:25. > :15:29.on because this doctor is going to tell us all about the laws of

:15:29. > :15:38.attraction. Yes, there are various traits that come up again enter

:15:38. > :15:43.again. Things like facial symmetry, masculinity or femininity. There is

:15:43. > :15:48.lots to see and do here. This is a little experiment which you can

:15:48. > :15:56.take part in this evening if you come along. I can have my picture

:15:56. > :16:04.taken just like that... Cheese! Any minute now, something hideous will

:16:04. > :16:09.happen. One minute, a radiant beauty, and the next, the face of a

:16:09. > :16:19.chimp! Unbelievable! Come and try it yourself if you're brave enough.

:16:19. > :16:21.

:16:21. > :16:29.It goes on till 10pm this evening. Apparently, your average. Thank you

:16:29. > :16:39.is so much! I think the laws of attraction is the man with a husky

:16:39. > :16:41.

:16:41. > :16:51.voice! I think he has been charting. -- shouting. I am told it is a

:16:51. > :17:00.

:17:00. > :17:03.severe case of man through. -- flu. Our Championship teams had the

:17:03. > :17:05.night off, leagues one and two produced some important results

:17:05. > :17:10.last night. But our two big Sheffield clubs are probably

:17:10. > :17:20.wishing they hadn't bothered now. Such a one-sided derby. The triumph

:17:20. > :17:24.

:17:24. > :17:29.was very much on town's side. Early chances went on taken. Sheer muscle

:17:29. > :17:39.power made it three-L the Huddersfield before half-time. A

:17:39. > :17:47.

:17:47. > :17:57.score the second half but the town's first away win. It became

:17:57. > :18:02.five-nil to Stevenage before some pride was restored. By contrast,

:18:02. > :18:12.the lookout for Chesterfield fans with the spring in their step after

:18:12. > :18:19.

:18:19. > :18:29.his second win. -- a second wind. A late free-kick brought in the

:18:29. > :18:29.

:18:29. > :18:37.equaliser and Rotherham's single point keeps them in place.

:18:37. > :18:44.Equalisers through terrific strikes. The home side grabbed the call

:18:44. > :18:48.winner, leaving Bradford 22nd in the league table. In Rugby League,

:18:48. > :18:51.it's less than a week since his last game in charge of Wakefield

:18:51. > :18:54.Wildcats and John Kear has already found a new job. He was introduced

:18:54. > :18:58.this morning as the new coach of Championship side Batley Bulldogs.

:18:58. > :19:01.It's Kear's first part-time job in more than 20 years and he says it's

:19:01. > :19:09.a new challenge that will also give him more time for life outside of

:19:09. > :19:15.Rugby League. I wanted to coach because I love coaching. This

:19:15. > :19:22.allows me to do that and also explore different avenues. It is a

:19:22. > :19:32.full-time demand, I can have a look round and see what is out in the

:19:32. > :19:33.

:19:33. > :19:36.world. Now motorsport, and in trials riding, this weekend it's

:19:36. > :19:39.the world team championships in in Italy. And for the first time in

:19:39. > :19:41.history, the Great Britain team, from manager through to all four

:19:42. > :19:45.riders, are Yorkshiremen. This is the Great Britain trials team who

:19:45. > :19:49.are set to take on the World This weekend. For the first time in the

:19:50. > :19:53.history of the team competition, all four riders and even the

:19:53. > :20:00.manager of from Yorkshire, representing Selston, Leeds and

:20:00. > :20:03.Scarborough. Trials riding is not a motor sport associated with speed.

:20:03. > :20:11.This sport demands balance, technique and control to navigate

:20:11. > :20:21.the bike over challenging obstacles without putting a foot wrong.

:20:21. > :20:23.

:20:23. > :20:29.you ride over obstacles and you don't put feet down, but if you put

:20:29. > :20:34.them down you are out. The trial has not been won by the GB team

:20:34. > :20:43.since 2003, so how do they rate their chances in Italy this

:20:43. > :20:51.weekend? It is a special event. Representing Great Britain is a

:20:51. > :20:59.special opportunity. I've had a very successful career, I'm still

:20:59. > :21:04.very motivated to win the event and be part of the team. I'm ready to

:21:04. > :21:08.lead another winter my list. thing that the Great Britain team

:21:08. > :21:12.has that is unique is that we get on really well together.

:21:12. > :21:18.represent Great Britain and be from Yorkshire, all of us, it is

:21:18. > :21:23.something to be proud of. The team of four who trained together on a

:21:23. > :21:28.regular basis are headed by legend of the sport. Great Britain's first

:21:28. > :21:36.ever trials champion. It is a fantastic achievement for the whole

:21:36. > :21:40.team. All of these riders have won championships, European and world.

:21:40. > :21:45.They are a great bunch of lads, really determined. We will do

:21:45. > :21:55.really well this weekend. Let's hope they it Yorkshire grip see

:21:55. > :21:56.

:21:56. > :22:01.some return with the world title. - - they Yorkshire grit. I don't want

:22:01. > :22:05.to appear smug, but Harry and I have been doing a bit of a Twitter

:22:05. > :22:15.campaign and it has happened. Congratulations to John the best

:22:15. > :22:16.

:22:16. > :22:26.two has had his first full England call up. -- Johnny Best. Thank you

:22:26. > :22:33.

:22:33. > :22:37.very much. I think it is time to move on. We always love a new work

:22:37. > :22:45.by a David Hockney. He has been controversial in his time. I love

:22:45. > :22:55.this one as well. Yes, his latest creation is in a garret at his

:22:55. > :23:00.beloved Salts Mill in Saltaire. -- in a gallery. A off the back of a

:23:00. > :23:04.lorry and out of a tube. Not a glamourous arrival for work by a

:23:04. > :23:08.Bradford born David Hockney. Salts Mill took delivery of the pictures

:23:08. > :23:14.last week. They measured 27 ft in length and show at a stretch of

:23:14. > :23:21.road in Bridlington through the changing seasons. David is

:23:21. > :23:31.celebrating what a lot of us feel would time. -- a lot of us feet all

:23:31. > :23:33.

:23:33. > :23:38.the time. -- see. When David Hockney discovered that work when

:23:38. > :23:42.we did -- digging up this road, he invited them round for a cup of tea

:23:42. > :23:52.to persuade them that it was really important to put the road back just

:23:52. > :24:02.
