:00:08. > :00:10.Welcome to Thursday's Look North. Tonight: Staying at home. More than

:00:10. > :00:12.half of parents at a Sheffield school withdraw their children,

:00:12. > :00:16.after an allegation of sexual assault.

:00:16. > :00:21.Also tonight: Kidnapped and chained to a bed. The Bradford man held

:00:21. > :00:24.hostage for 20 days while visiting family in Pakistan.

:00:24. > :00:32.Entente cordiale. York celebrates the contribution that French air

:00:32. > :00:37.men made during the Second World War.

:00:37. > :00:47.Temperatures are expected to recover in the next 24 hours. Join

:00:48. > :00:51.Good evening, and welcome to Look North.

:00:51. > :00:55.Parents have been keeping their children at home, as police

:00:55. > :00:58.investigate allegations of a sex assault on a child at a school in

:00:58. > :01:01.Sheffield. Greenlands Infant School reopened today, but only 40% of the

:01:01. > :01:04.pupils returned. One person has been arrested and released on bail

:01:04. > :01:07.in connection with the police inquiry. Some parents say they're

:01:07. > :01:17.unhappy with the information they've been given by the school.

:01:17. > :01:17.

:01:17. > :01:21.Our reporter Emma Glasbey has the story.

:01:21. > :01:26.There were some heated discussions at the gates this morning, as

:01:26. > :01:29.Greenlands Infant School reopened. It soon became clear not all of the

:01:29. > :01:34.children would be returning to class today. Greenlands Infant

:01:34. > :01:39.School was closed earlier this week as police investigated claims of a

:01:39. > :01:45.sex assault against a child here. A person has been arrested and bailed.

:01:45. > :01:50.Today, all children were supposed to be back in classes. But some

:01:50. > :01:54.parents decided to keep their children at home. Today, Sheffield

:01:54. > :02:02.city council told us only 40% of the children at the school had

:02:02. > :02:09.attended classes today. We had a great meeting, 150 parents turned

:02:09. > :02:14.up. We decided not to give our children to this school. Within the

:02:14. > :02:20.community, we want answers. school has failed to inform the

:02:20. > :02:26.parents fully, to reassure them. The parents do not know what to do.

:02:26. > :02:30.Police patrols continue around the school to offer reassurance to

:02:30. > :02:36.concerned parents. Meanwhile it has been confirmed the head teacher is

:02:36. > :02:41.working from home this week. We have been told the decision has

:02:41. > :02:51.been taken because it was in the best interests of her well-being.

:02:51. > :03:03.

:03:03. > :03:10.Some parents are planning to keep their children at home tomorrow as

:03:10. > :03:14.well. Next week is half-term, giving the community more term --

:03:14. > :03:17.time to consider the events of last week. A Bradford man, who was

:03:17. > :03:21.kidnapped whilst visiting Pakistan, says he's lucky be alive, after he

:03:21. > :03:24.was chained to an iron bed for 20 days by his captors. Malik Iqbal

:03:24. > :03:28.says he still has nightmares, and will never visit the country again.

:03:28. > :03:38.A local councillor in Bradford says he's concerned that cases like this

:03:38. > :03:40.

:03:40. > :03:45.one are on the increase. Spencer Stokes has been to meet Malik Iqbal.

:03:45. > :03:50.Safely back in Bradford but Malik Iqbal it is still recovering from

:03:50. > :03:58.his 20 day ordeal. Chains were tied to his legs fixing him to a bed

:03:58. > :04:06.frame at a house. I did not think I would come out alive from the

:04:06. > :04:13.situation. Because, these people, they are not human beings. They do

:04:13. > :04:20.not value anybody's life. What they are after his money, or they will

:04:20. > :04:25.take your life if you can't pay the ransom. He travelled with his

:04:26. > :04:30.family in the summer. He was abducted while visiting a friend.

:04:30. > :04:35.Blind folded, he endured three weeks in chains, subjected to daily

:04:35. > :04:39.death threats. Thousands of people from Yorkshire go to Pakistani

:04:39. > :04:43.every year. But the country is far from politically stable, so the

:04:43. > :04:49.Foreign Office has issued a warning. The British Government says there

:04:49. > :04:59.is a general terrorism risk across Pakistan with a particular risk of

:04:59. > :05:00.

:05:00. > :05:05.kidnapping in this particular city. Hardly reassuring words for anyone

:05:05. > :05:11.considering a visit. But it is accepted that kidnappings are a

:05:11. > :05:14.growing problem. I am afraid this is only the tip of the iceberg.

:05:14. > :05:22.People in the past have approached me and said this has happened but

:05:22. > :05:27.they are afraid of reporting this crime. The perception out there

:05:27. > :05:34.within the community is a authorities in Pakistan and here do

:05:34. > :05:37.not take any sort of action. family have helped to stump up the

:05:38. > :05:43.15,000 his captors demanded. He plans to pay them back but he will

:05:43. > :05:48.never go back to Pakistan, and suggests people stay away. I would

:05:48. > :05:53.say to people considering taking their kids or going themselves to

:05:53. > :05:56.Pakistan, I would say, never ever think about it. Because it can

:05:56. > :05:59.happen to anybody. If it has happened to me, it can happen to

:05:59. > :06:02.anybody. Malik Iqbal there, ending that

:06:02. > :06:05.report from Spencer Stokes. Stay with us.

:06:05. > :06:15.No longer open all hours. Despite the protests, Pontefract Hospital's

:06:15. > :06:17.

:06:17. > :06:20.A&E department will be closed at The city of York has been

:06:20. > :06:25.celebrating the contribution that French air men made during the

:06:25. > :06:28.Second World War. 2,500 French air and ground crew were based at

:06:28. > :06:31.Elvington, and launched bombing raids on their own country, as well

:06:31. > :06:41.as Germany from here. Today, a memorial was unveiled at York

:06:41. > :06:41.

:06:41. > :06:51.Minster in their honour, and 1,500 people attended the ceremony. Danny

:06:51. > :06:52.

:06:52. > :06:56.Carpenter is live in York. This has been a very significant day?

:06:56. > :07:01.Yes, earned an important day not just for York but all of the

:07:01. > :07:06.countries we still like to think of as the free world. Those at their

:07:06. > :07:12.bases around York were not just populated by British personnel, but

:07:12. > :07:18.by New Zealanders, Canadians, Australians and the French. Today

:07:18. > :07:23.was their turn to be properly commemorated.

:07:23. > :07:30.Out of the stunning blue they came, one of York's most spectacular fly-

:07:30. > :07:35.past in years. The French and British aircraft were played --

:07:35. > :07:40.paying tribute to the French air men. Who had raced there lies

:07:40. > :07:50.flying bombing missions. Losses were heavy, around half were killed.

:07:50. > :07:51.

:07:51. > :07:57.In York Minster today they were remembered, in English and French.

:07:57. > :08:07.A memorial stone to the 200 French air men who died was given to York

:08:07. > :08:09.

:08:09. > :08:19.Minster. To have this memorial in the cathedral, it is there forever.

:08:19. > :08:24.They are at peace now. Have there been any tears? Some. But, you know,

:08:24. > :08:29.some are very hard men. They can cry if they want. Out in the

:08:29. > :08:32.sunshine, the five French veterans who had travelled to York, gathered

:08:32. > :08:40.with their AER cheeks and ambassador to watch 16 aircraft

:08:40. > :08:45.overhead. While hundreds of Service personnel marched past in tribute.

:08:45. > :08:49.It was a moving service, it is fantastic to see France and Britain

:08:49. > :08:54.working together and remembering together what happened in the

:08:54. > :08:57.Second World War. It is really important that it is celebrated

:08:57. > :09:04.here today and it was lovely to see so many French people and English

:09:04. > :09:09.people together. A lot of these people who gave their help at the

:09:09. > :09:14.great risk of their life, like my father, were never recognised, they

:09:14. > :09:19.didn't get decorations, they are totally forgotten. There were

:09:19. > :09:23.hundreds of people like this. was a day when two countries came

:09:23. > :09:28.together in York to remember a shared past and celebrate a united

:09:28. > :09:31.future. Dwyer of they were in York, the

:09:31. > :09:36.French air men became part of the fabric of the city and in a sense

:09:36. > :09:41.they are now going to become part of the fabric of York Minster with

:09:41. > :09:48.this memorial stone which marks an emotional bond which has been

:09:48. > :09:52.remembered years on. For this was one of the most

:09:52. > :10:02.complicated flypasts that has ever taken place in Yorkshire. We were

:10:02. > :10:07.

:10:07. > :10:12.lucky enough to have a bird's eye Whilst the parade and pageantry was

:10:12. > :10:18.taking place at York Minster, a few miles away another formation was

:10:18. > :10:28.about to happen. Over Yorkshire, 9 RAF aeroplanes were getting ready

:10:28. > :10:29.

:10:29. > :10:37.They went from Linton took Alvington, appropriately, the base

:10:37. > :10:47.so many of the French were stationed during Second World War.

:10:47. > :11:13.

:11:13. > :11:23.20 minutes holding pattern, then The then it was back to base and

:11:23. > :11:28.

:11:28. > :11:35.Touchdown. And one for the album, a day to remember!

:11:35. > :11:41.You obviously had a wonderful time. Are you back down to Earth yet?

:11:41. > :11:45.Just about. I have to say it was an absolutely exhilarating experience,

:11:45. > :11:50.one a will remember for the rest of my life. More important on this day

:11:50. > :11:58.to remember the reason for that fly-past, the sacrifice of all of

:11:58. > :12:01.those who fought and flu and died in the Second World War.

:12:01. > :12:04.A former police detective has appeared in court charged with

:12:05. > :12:08.murdering his partner, who was a policewoman from York. The body of

:12:08. > :12:11.Detective Constable Heather Cooper, 33, was found by police in West

:12:11. > :12:13.Sussex, on Sunday. Her partner, Peter Foster, 35, was remanded in

:12:13. > :12:17.custody after an appearance at Worthing Magistrates Court. Heather

:12:17. > :12:23.was a mother of two, who was on maternity leave from her job with

:12:23. > :12:27.Surrey Police. 44 MPs have asked the Sun newspaper

:12:27. > :12:30.to release all of its records of its coverage of the Hillsborough

:12:30. > :12:33.football disaster. The Sun had blamed drunken fans, although the

:12:33. > :12:36.official inquiry said it was the result of overcrowding after police

:12:36. > :12:39.opened a gate. An e-petition demanding "full disclosure" from

:12:39. > :12:42.the paper now has more than 24,000 signatures. The government has

:12:42. > :12:52.agreed to disclose all Cabinet papers about the tragedy in which

:12:52. > :12:53.

:12:53. > :12:56.96 Liverpool supporters died. The latest figures show a 4% drop

:12:56. > :12:59.in crime overall in Yorkshire. In South Yorkshire, the number of

:12:59. > :13:02.crimes reported to police has dropped by 7%, compared to last

:13:02. > :13:12.year. The force says it's the lowest for 20 years with

:13:12. > :13:12.

:13:12. > :13:16.significant falls in violent crime The A&E department at Pontefract

:13:16. > :13:19.Hospital is to close at night from the end of the month. The proposal,

:13:19. > :13:23.announced just last week, was ratified by the board of Mid

:13:23. > :13:26.Yorkshire Hospitals Trust, despite a last ditch appeal from local MP

:13:26. > :13:29.Yvette Cooper. She's branded the move a betrayal of promises made to

:13:29. > :13:39.local people when the new hospital was planned. Here with the latest

:13:39. > :13:47.

:13:47. > :13:50.is our health correspondent Penny Board members were left in no doubt

:13:50. > :13:56.about the strength of feeling as they met in at Wakefield this

:13:56. > :14:00.morning. Last weekend, the bombshell that the accident and

:14:00. > :14:06.emergency department needs to close because of staff shortages. The

:14:06. > :14:12.board approved that move today despite an appeal. I urge you to

:14:12. > :14:21.rethink this decision. It goes to the heart of the deep distrust

:14:21. > :14:27.there is about the intentions of the board, particularly as we know.

:14:27. > :14:33.The explanation given is that the Trust's three hospitals have nine

:14:33. > :14:38.vacancies who staff any. All attempts at recruitment have failed.

:14:38. > :14:45.Temporary staff have covered the situation, but those doctors leave

:14:45. > :14:55.in 10 days's time. But for the loan at Pontefract resident on the board,

:14:55. > :14:55.

:14:55. > :15:02.that was not good enough. People will fill betrayed on this issue. -

:15:02. > :15:09.- feel. Yvette Cooper said such a serious situation should have been

:15:09. > :15:14.raised nationally and earlier. has been a difficult day. I didn't

:15:14. > :15:18.come into the NHS are to restructure services. The board has

:15:18. > :15:21.taken the decision purely on patient safety grounds. We don't

:15:21. > :15:31.have enough doctors will stop we have reluctantly decided to make

:15:31. > :15:33.

:15:33. > :15:39.this change, and that this is not about money. -- enough doctors..

:15:39. > :15:49.Lord Lofthouse said this would never have happened on his watch.

:15:49. > :15:52.

:15:52. > :16:02.This campaign... I will not sit back. I will not sit back and

:16:02. > :16:05.

:16:05. > :16:09.allowed this. I'm -- I believe that these services are needed.

:16:09. > :16:19.Before seven o'clock: Riding high - we catch up with the silver medal-

:16:19. > :16:25.winning British Supermoto rider from Barnsley.

:16:25. > :16:35.Join me later when I will have a story with a happy ending. Hello,

:16:35. > :16:36.

:16:36. > :16:39.Billy! Come-on! Sport now, and Sheffield United

:16:39. > :16:42.were in League One action at Preston last night. The Blades were

:16:42. > :16:48.desperate for a win after surrendering a two goal lead in the

:16:48. > :16:57.Sheffield Derby on Sunday. Ian Bucknell has the story of a match

:16:57. > :17:02.packed with goals. Sheffield United got off to a

:17:02. > :17:12.flying start. Matt Phillips making his full debut took his time and

:17:12. > :17:22.picked his spot. But Preston were bounced back into the match. The

:17:22. > :17:23.

:17:23. > :17:30.Blades were soon in front again. But, after the break, Preston once

:17:30. > :17:37.more pulled level, this time from Ian issue. Now came the test of

:17:37. > :17:47.character for Danny Wilson's men. Would this be another opportunity

:17:47. > :17:49.

:17:49. > :17:54.missed? This shot found its way through the Preston keeper.

:17:54. > :18:03.Sheffield United secured the win, and got their season back on track.

:18:03. > :18:06.The Blades go fifth in a League One, just two points behind.

:18:06. > :18:09.Now, a couple of weeks ago, we featured Barnsley boy, James Addy,

:18:09. > :18:14.who was on his way to represent Great Britain in the world team

:18:14. > :18:19.Supermoto competition. And for those who don't follow the sport,

:18:19. > :18:25.it's a mixture of track and off- road motorcycling. Well, the great

:18:25. > :18:28.news is the British team came second at the World Championships.

:18:28. > :18:33.James came into the studio earlier along with his dad, John, who also

:18:34. > :18:41.happens to be his mechanic. We asked James how much of an

:18:42. > :18:45.achievement second place was. was the first time I had done it. I

:18:46. > :18:50.have never had that much pressure in my life before, but it meant a

:18:50. > :19:00.lot. I went into the final race knowing we could finish on the

:19:00. > :19:07.podium. That is all we wanted to do. Not munch champagne on a podium,

:19:07. > :19:16.though, James! -- not much champagne. Let me introduce John,

:19:17. > :19:23.the man behind the throne. It was the hardest thing I have ever been

:19:23. > :19:30.up against. It was difficult. The first thing I said to him was, why

:19:30. > :19:37.do you do that? It is suffering what he went through. We can see

:19:37. > :19:47.you at work on the bike, while he stand and watch us. Our use of

:19:47. > :19:57.funding? Or do you have sponsors? We have got sponsors. But they only

:19:57. > :19:57.

:19:57. > :20:02.give us the cost. James, you told me a secret before we we'll do this

:20:02. > :20:12.be Sten but actually, it was your dad who liked it more than you. --

:20:12. > :20:18.

:20:18. > :20:28.we wield. My dad farm's most of it! Do you ever fall out? -- My dad of

:20:28. > :20:30.

:20:30. > :20:40.funds. Is this a triathlon but motor riding? -- for motor riding?

:20:40. > :20:40.

:20:40. > :20:46.A little bit. I noticed a few scratches. Do you worry when you

:20:46. > :20:55.see him going round at breakneck speed? I worry about how much it is

:20:55. > :20:59.going to cost! You told me you have never seen the start of a race,

:20:59. > :21:08.because until they get past that first corner, you don't know if he

:21:08. > :21:14.is all right. That is right. That is the worrying part about it. When

:21:14. > :21:21.you have got 30 riders all going into the same bend, it is very

:21:21. > :21:26.worrying for a dad. Second place, can you improve on that? Hopefully.

:21:27. > :21:33.Hopefully I will get invited to do it next here. The team was very

:21:33. > :21:43.good this here. Hopefully, next year I will be first. How much is

:21:43. > :21:53.

:21:53. > :22:00.this worth? About 10,000. Thank you for bringing him and! -- him

:22:00. > :22:02.The latest team to sign up to use Yorkshire as a base ahead of next

:22:02. > :22:05.year's Olympics has been announced. The Russian diving team, which

:22:05. > :22:10.recently finished second in the medal table at the World

:22:10. > :22:20.Championships, will be based in Leeds. Today they held the first of

:22:20. > :22:23.

:22:23. > :22:30.their training camps at the John Charles Sports Centre. We decided

:22:30. > :22:40.to start preparations earlier. This is the first step. We are here, in

:22:40. > :22:40.

:22:40. > :22:50.Great Britain. We will be here in February, and then for the Olympic

:22:50. > :22:52.

:22:52. > :22:55.Games. We are not strangers civil stop -- we are not strangers here.

:22:55. > :22:58.Now, here's a story with a happy ending. Remember the pygmy goats

:22:58. > :23:07.that we featured seven weeks ago when they were stolen from their

:23:07. > :23:11.pen at the York Maize Maze? Well, the good news is they have all

:23:11. > :23:19.turned up, just slightly worse for wear. Ian White has been to see

:23:19. > :23:25.them. It is a pleasure to introduce you

:23:25. > :23:34.to these goats. There are backward their mum after a seven-week ordeal.

:23:34. > :23:44.They were snatched by thieves. -- back with. The police rang up. They

:23:44. > :23:48.said, I think I have got your goads! I'd describe them. -- your

:23:48. > :23:56.goats. The golds were found wandering close to fields near in

:23:56. > :24:06.industrial estate -- the goats. These goads but in good shape

:24:06. > :24:13.

:24:13. > :24:23.despite their ordeal. -- these goat's. We tried to build him up a

:24:23. > :24:24.

:24:24. > :24:28.little bit, they are undernourished. They have come round today.

:24:28. > :24:36.cried for nearly a week when her kids were taken, but now, this

:24:36. > :24:46.really is and bowled good's tale with a happy ending. -- really is

:24:46. > :24:47.

:24:47. > :24:52.an old goat's. I am glad they are back.

:24:52. > :25:02.Why did they spend all that money on the department then to close it?

:25:02. > :25:26.

:25:26. > :25:35.Look at Alastair's picture. Look at that frost! He wanted me to show it

:25:35. > :25:42.tonight, just in case anyone is at doubting. Well done, Alastair. And

:25:42. > :25:52.here is a second picture. This is in Scarborough. Keep the pictures

:25:52. > :25:54.

:25:54. > :26:04.coming in. I have also written about my thoughts. Go to the

:26:04. > :26:10.website. There is a lot of cloud compared to today. But tomorrow

:26:10. > :26:16.afternoon should brighten up. The breeze will come in from the south

:26:16. > :26:21.or south-west in the next few days, so Saturday could see temperatures
