:00:15. > :00:21.Tributes to a Yorkshire traffic policeman killed on the hard

:00:21. > :00:24.shoulder of the M1. Mark is a stellar traffic officer. I would

:00:24. > :00:29.like to pay tribute to him as an ultimate professional. He paid the

:00:29. > :00:33.ultimate sacrifice. Also tonight - sweeping changes.

:00:33. > :00:43.The council planning to move out and let the supermarket move then.

:00:43. > :00:49.And a Royal Wedding presents Das - Mac -- Queen Victoria's jewellery

:00:49. > :00:59.going under the hammer in Yorkshire. For the full for Cas, join me later

:00:59. > :01:00.

:01:00. > :01:03.on in the programme. Hello and welcome to the programme.

:01:03. > :01:08.A lorry driver is still being questioned on suspicion of causing

:01:08. > :01:11.death by dangerous driving after an accident which killed a West

:01:11. > :01:15.Yorkshire policeman yesterday. 41- year-old PC Mark Goodlad was hit by

:01:15. > :01:19.the lorry as he helped a motorist on the hard shoulder of the M1 near

:01:19. > :01:25.Wakefield. Today his Chief Constable paid tribute to his

:01:25. > :01:29.officer and spoke of the dangers faced by police and motored days --

:01:29. > :01:35.motorways. We have two reports. John Cundy is overlooking the scene

:01:35. > :01:39.of the accident. What can you tell This time last night, the section

:01:40. > :01:44.of the M1 in West Yorkshire was silent and empty. Tonight, a normal

:01:44. > :01:48.flowing motorway. It was shut completely just after four o'clock

:01:48. > :01:58.yesterday afternoon after the death of PC Mark Goodlad. Today the

:01:58. > :02:02.floral tributes are beginning to gather at the. Where he died. A

:02:02. > :02:10.very sad and community for a man who had been serving the police for

:02:10. > :02:17.10 years. Almost hidden from public sight,

:02:17. > :02:23.the lorry that head PC Mark Goodlad yesterday. As he was tried to help

:02:23. > :02:31.the motorist in distress. A tragedy which has left his colleagues tried

:02:31. > :02:37.to come to terms with. Mark is a stellar traffic officer. He paid

:02:37. > :02:42.the ultimate sacrifice last night. He was a married man. Our thoughts

:02:42. > :02:46.and so that they have gone out to his wife. He was a dad. The fatal

:02:47. > :02:52.crash happened just after four o'clock yesterday afternoon on the

:02:52. > :02:58.M1 south of Wakefield, close to junction 39. The inquiry into

:02:58. > :03:04.yesterday's tragedy at this spot will take a considerable time. But

:03:04. > :03:08.what caught -- cause the lorry to crash and to PC Mark Goodlad as he

:03:08. > :03:12.was working on the hard shoulder of the southbound carriageway trying

:03:12. > :03:17.to fix a broken down car fire is stranded motorist?

:03:17. > :03:22.A woman driver of the car was thrown clear in the impact. The

:03:22. > :03:27.lorry driver escaped injury. Motorway patrol is a dangerous

:03:27. > :03:33.place to do policing. We need to think and remember the officers,

:03:33. > :03:38.his colleagues, that have got to cope with the loss of a friend.

:03:38. > :03:41.They have got to deal with the incident themselves. PC Mark

:03:41. > :03:46.Goodlad is the 4th West Yorkshire Police officer to be killed in the

:03:46. > :03:50.last eight years. Most people are devastated. He was a committed

:03:50. > :03:55.individual. He would have seen that Lady and realised she was in need

:03:55. > :03:59.of help. He would have pulled over and tried to make sure that she was

:03:59. > :04:05.not in danger. It is a sad day that as a result he has paid the

:04:05. > :04:11.ultimate price. The M1 was fully reopened early -- only after

:04:11. > :04:15.several hours. But few signs today of yesterday's horrific accident.

:04:15. > :04:20.Tonight police have issued two numbers that any potential

:04:20. > :04:30.witnesses could contact Lamont. They should be on your screen now.

:04:30. > :04:34.

:04:34. > :04:38.-- contact them on. There is the main police switchboard as well. If

:04:38. > :04:42.you're passing this way around a quarter past for yesterday

:04:42. > :04:47.afternoon, you may have vital information they can help police

:04:47. > :04:51.solve this terrible tragic incident. Thank you very much. PC Mark

:04:51. > :04:55.Goodlad is not the first person to be killed on the hard shoulder and

:04:55. > :04:58.figure shock it is one of the most dangerous places to be on the

:04:58. > :05:02.motorway. Nevertheless, hundreds of people have to work there every day,

:05:02. > :05:06.not just bullies but breakdown mechanics and Highways staff. Danny

:05:06. > :05:11.Carpenter reports on the dangers they all face.

:05:11. > :05:17.It is part of the job. Patrolling the motorway, looking for trouble.

:05:17. > :05:23.In this case, tyre trouble. lady has had a blow-out. Her wheel

:05:23. > :05:33.is here on the main carriageway. We need to get that moved as soon as

:05:33. > :05:33.

:05:34. > :05:37.possible. We need to get out. sergeant and his partner art in

:05:37. > :05:43.South Yorkshire Police. Like everybody who works on the motorway,

:05:43. > :05:46.they have to be constantly aware of the dangers and act accordingly.

:05:46. > :05:50.has gone to the passenger side of the vehicle to talk to the driver.

:05:50. > :05:54.He is looking past the people and I am always checking the murders for

:05:55. > :06:00.anything that might be happening behind us. Residents on the hard

:06:00. > :06:05.shoulder are comparatively rare. In the last five years, they accounted

:06:05. > :06:10.for just 1.6% of the total number of motorway accidents. But they are

:06:11. > :06:16.comparatively serious. 31% resulted in death or serious injury. In

:06:16. > :06:22.accidents on other parts of the motorway, that figure is 12%. Which

:06:22. > :06:28.is why safety is has taken -- is taken so seriously. The utmost

:06:28. > :06:33.priority is safety. You do not have to be on the motorway or out of the

:06:33. > :06:37.vehicle for very long to realise it is it dangerous situation and you

:06:37. > :06:41.switch on very quickly. Mechanics from motoring organisations receive

:06:41. > :06:46.similar training to the police. They are all too aware of the

:06:46. > :06:53.dangers. Even taking absolutely the best safety precautions possible,

:06:53. > :06:57.it can happen because you cannot build in what is going to happen

:06:57. > :07:02.with an accident. You cannot help it. Motoring organisations and the

:07:02. > :07:07.police now consider that they had sold up is such a dangerous place

:07:07. > :07:11.that their advice is that if you do break down, get out of the car on

:07:11. > :07:15.the left-hand side, cross the barrier and got the verge. -- the

:07:15. > :07:20.hard shoulder. But for those looking to help, that is not an

:07:20. > :07:26.option. They know the risks and choose to take them. It is their

:07:26. > :07:31.job. Thank you. Not surprisingly, thos

:07:31. > :07:35.and sentiments echoed throughout the day by lots of day -- was of

:07:35. > :07:42.people. The former head of the Metropolitan Police called for

:07:42. > :07:47.people to tweeted general salute to PC Mark Goodlad. Mickey Le-Walpole

:07:47. > :07:52.wrote, as a retired policeman, I know the daily dangers of the job.

:07:52. > :08:00.What a cruel way to lose a life. Jan Thomson described Mark as one

:08:00. > :08:04.of her finest. As sentiments shared by the whole of South Yorkshire.

:08:04. > :08:11.Coming up: Called to account. After last night's story about massive

:08:11. > :08:15.utility bills, you have been in touch with your own tails. --

:08:15. > :08:20.stories. First, traders say plans by a local

:08:20. > :08:24.council to move out of town and sell its offices to a supermarket

:08:24. > :08:28.could finish them off. Bolsover Council wants to move its staff to

:08:28. > :08:34.a new site in the village of Clowne and sell its current building to

:08:34. > :08:39.Morrisons. Bolsover, a market town with every

:08:39. > :08:44.street lined with independent traders. So plans to turn a nearby

:08:44. > :08:49.council building into a supermarket chain have not gone down well.

:08:49. > :08:53.into their car and do the shop. As far as I'm concerned, it is a

:08:53. > :08:56.disastrous idea. He has been running his three-shot for two and

:08:56. > :09:02.a half years and is worried he will not survive if all shoppers are

:09:02. > :09:07.directed away from the town centre. You could build this on redevelop

:09:07. > :09:10.land at the bottom of the hill. There would be no impact whatsoever

:09:10. > :09:15.on the town centre and the tourists but come here and the local people

:09:15. > :09:19.that come up here. It is a ludicrous idea. Bolsover Council

:09:19. > :09:23.have been based there for 25 years but have now decided to sell up.

:09:23. > :09:29.With Morrisons the preferred buyer. Firm plans have not been drawn up

:09:30. > :09:33.but the council says it is expected to create 200 jobs. They say the

:09:33. > :09:38.public can businesses will have every opportunity to comment upon

:09:38. > :09:41.any proposals, both informally at the exhibitions and formally

:09:41. > :09:48.through any planning application submitted. The council planned to

:09:48. > :09:53.move on to the Clowne campus of Chesterfield College. He does not

:09:53. > :09:56.have the support of local people. It is going to be taking part in

:09:57. > :10:00.the termination of a college and the most important thing for our

:10:00. > :10:06.community must be to offer opportunities to young people, not

:10:06. > :10:11.to take them away. Not everyone disagrees with the plan. It is a

:10:11. > :10:17.good idea. It will bring employment into the area. Employment is not

:10:17. > :10:24.good around this area. My opinion is, a good idea. No, I think it is

:10:24. > :10:28.wrong allowing big ships -- shops into areas like this. I am all for

:10:28. > :10:37.a competition effort brings prices down. While not a done deal, owners

:10:37. > :10:40.are waiting to see what the future has in store.

:10:40. > :10:45.Interesting to see these a firm market moving into the council

:10:45. > :10:49.headquarters. -- the supermarket. This summer, eight year-old Matthew

:10:49. > :10:53.Cartwright fell into a canal in South Yorkshire. He was arrested

:10:53. > :10:57.and taken to hospital but later died. Today a petition has been

:10:57. > :11:02.handed into British Waterways calling for better of waterside

:11:02. > :11:09.city along the canal. In his first interview, Matthew's father spoke

:11:09. > :11:12.to our reporter about the campaign. He was a happy-go-lucky lad. Full

:11:12. > :11:17.of life. He liked to be outside and on the goal.

:11:17. > :11:21.It is barely two nonsense Matthew Cartwright drowned. Now his father

:11:21. > :11:28.and grandparents want to ensure no other family faces the ordeal. If

:11:28. > :11:33.need be, by direct action. We were blackberry picking. He went to

:11:33. > :11:38.close some Slapton. If it had been fenced off, this would not have

:11:38. > :11:45.happened. -- he slipped 10. If there had been danger signs,

:11:45. > :11:51.Matthew would have been aware of it. If there had been a sign their...

:11:51. > :11:55.He would not have climbed down there. Since Matthew drowned, the

:11:55. > :11:59.committee has gathered together 1000 signatures on a petition. The

:11:59. > :12:04.one British Waterways to take some action, possibly putting some signs

:12:04. > :12:08.up and maybe fencing this area off. But the locals say that that does a

:12:08. > :12:16.start, all this education should be cleared to make it in at -- clear

:12:16. > :12:20.that there is a command here. -- a canal here.

:12:20. > :12:24.You have been very instrumental. Why? It is the first time since I

:12:24. > :12:27.have lived down here that something like that has happened. It is an

:12:27. > :12:31.awful tragedy and we do not want something like that to happen again.

:12:31. > :12:35.This afternoon there has been a meeting with British Waterways and

:12:35. > :12:38.the family said it was positive. But they do what action and they

:12:38. > :12:44.are fully prepared to put up the road signs or anything else to

:12:44. > :12:52.prevent another accident. Maybe some sort of bench or a memorial

:12:52. > :12:56.for Matthew, just for her children, if they see it they will think,

:12:56. > :13:03.this is where that little lad fell into the water. I am not going near

:13:04. > :13:07.that. Just select its beware. difficult two months that have

:13:07. > :13:11.passed since Matthew drowned have done nothing to ease the pain of

:13:11. > :13:19.his loss. But perhaps positive action now may go some way to

:13:19. > :13:22.ensure his death was not in vain. Thank you. There has been some

:13:22. > :13:26.response. The family were asking for all that undergrowth to be

:13:26. > :13:30.cleared. There as an alternative suggestion from British Waterways.

:13:30. > :13:34.They have told us this afternoon that the plan to fill in all the

:13:34. > :13:40.gaps in the vegetation on the canal bank and form be better bad year to

:13:40. > :13:44.the water. We will keep you up-to- date on that story. Let's have a

:13:44. > :13:49.look at the other time -- News: A fisherman from yard has been killed

:13:49. > :13:52.after being swept into a river. A lifeboat crew managed to reach the

:13:52. > :13:57.64-year-old at South Gare on the River Tees in Redcar last night.

:13:57. > :14:02.But he died in hospital. Another man who was 63 was also sucked into

:14:02. > :14:06.the water but managed to climb out. Police say no further action will

:14:06. > :14:11.be taken against two women who were arrested as part of an

:14:11. > :14:18.investigation into two nurseries and yard. They were among six --

:14:18. > :14:25.six staff in Red, White and Blue -- Heworth House and Little Joe's

:14:25. > :14:29.Nursery. These say people -- a public inquiry has started under

:14:29. > :14:32.plans for a controversial gas plant on the edge of the North York Moors.

:14:32. > :14:36.Moorland Energy wants to build a plant to process gas from

:14:36. > :14:44.underground reserves at ever Burston. There has been opposition

:14:44. > :14:48.Unions in Doncaster claimed that the council is preparing to fire

:14:48. > :14:52.all its staff, and then be higher than one different contact --

:14:52. > :14:57.contracts. Unison said that more discussions are to take place about

:14:57. > :15:01.brand new terms and conditions. Barnsley and Sheffield have taken

:15:01. > :15:04.similar action, if Doncaster council refuses to comment tonight.

:15:04. > :15:07.Were organisations involved in engineering in South Yorkshire have

:15:07. > :15:11.met with Nick Clegg to ask the Government to do more to help the

:15:11. > :15:15.industry. Managers from Boeing, Rolls-Royce and the University of

:15:15. > :15:18.Sheffield that at a special event hosted by the Deputy Prime Minister

:15:18. > :15:22.at Westminster. That is your news in brief tonight.

:15:22. > :15:26.You may remember that last night we brought you the story of the Leeds

:15:26. > :15:30.couple who say that they could be forced out of business after they

:15:30. > :15:34.received a 70,000 bill from British Gas. The story led to a big

:15:34. > :15:41.response from view, our viewers. Many of you got in touch to share

:15:41. > :15:45.your experiences with us. Just a recap, shone and Catherine

:15:45. > :15:49.run stand by in Leeds. They had a new electricity meter fitted five

:15:49. > :15:52.years ago and have been paying their bills to British Gas.

:15:52. > :15:57.Enormous, they got a letter from the company telling them that they

:15:57. > :16:01.have not been paid it -- not been paying enough. The bill was later

:16:01. > :16:06.amended to say that they owed 50,000. British Gas have admitted

:16:06. > :16:11.that it was their error, but are demanding full payment. Sean and

:16:11. > :16:16.Catherine are saying that it could put them out of business. The issue

:16:16. > :16:21.angered their MP, but he wants the way that every companies build

:16:21. > :16:25.their customers investigated. is totally unacceptable. For a

:16:25. > :16:29.small business to try and find this level of money. Big business can

:16:29. > :16:32.probably afford it, but this is not good. Certainly in this economic

:16:32. > :16:39.climate. We need to be doing everything we can to help and

:16:39. > :16:45.protect small businesses. The story got a big response from you. Kate

:16:45. > :16:50.Barton received a bill for 26,000. She ran after battling for 12

:16:50. > :16:56.months. It turned out that British Gas owed are more than 600.

:16:56. > :17:00.Another man got in touch by a face but, saying that his bar was billed

:17:00. > :17:03.40,000 for a meter that they did not actually have.

:17:03. > :17:09.Banded Judith Coates says that her husband has just a tiny workshop,

:17:09. > :17:14.but received a and -- and energy bill for 5,400. After many phone

:17:14. > :17:21.calls, they got an updated bill for just 79 with no apology.

:17:21. > :17:24.A final word goes to this woman, who is sick of arguing with energy

:17:24. > :17:26.companies. She says that when you speak to them, the teacher like you

:17:26. > :17:31.are an idiot. We have been speaking to British

:17:31. > :17:35.Gas, they have not set much but they said that the urge all

:17:35. > :17:40.customers to check every bill to ensure that we -- readings are

:17:40. > :17:45.correct. Lot of response to that one. An

:17:45. > :17:50.incredible story. To keep them coming in. Before seven o'clock

:17:50. > :17:54.tonight. So sad, Victoria and Albert's

:17:54. > :17:57.treasures. Jilly made for a queen goes under the hammer in a North

:17:57. > :18:01.Yorkshire. And from an Bremner to Bates, the

:18:01. > :18:07.play about one of Leeds United's most dedicated fans who has

:18:07. > :18:11.followed them through thick and thin.

:18:11. > :18:15.It was of course one of the greatest love stories of the last

:18:15. > :18:21.two centuries. It was the one between Queen Victoria and Prince

:18:21. > :18:26.Albert. There were only married for 21 years, had lots of children.

:18:26. > :18:32.After his death, she went into mourning for 40 years. Now, a

:18:32. > :18:36.little piece of that love story has ended up here in a North Yorkshire.

:18:36. > :18:40.By the time these very early moving pictures were taken of Queen

:18:40. > :18:45.Victoria, she had been in mourning for her husband for almost four

:18:45. > :18:49.decades. But this story begins many years before that. When Victoria

:18:49. > :18:53.and Albert had just built Balmoral Castle, and when they were both

:18:53. > :18:57.very happy. One 28th August 1860, the royal

:18:57. > :19:01.couple gave some very special wedding presents. Called an

:19:01. > :19:04.amethyst, the Broads and pendant matched and complemented one

:19:04. > :19:08.another, much like the people who had given them.

:19:08. > :19:13.The pieces were given to a lady called Joanna Robertson, when the

:19:13. > :19:17.occasion of her marriage. Her father was the estate's manager of

:19:17. > :19:21.Balmoral. The royal couple had just to rebuild their home, and were

:19:21. > :19:25.said to have fallen in love with the Scottish Highlands. After an

:19:25. > :19:28.excellent day's shooting on the estate, Prince Albert Gate D

:19:28. > :19:32.Robertson family this engraved cravat pin, a present he had

:19:32. > :19:37.actually received from his wife. Generations later, the Robinson

:19:37. > :19:40.family live in Yorkshire and have decided to sell. They are going to

:19:40. > :19:44.get international interest. As we have seen with the royal wedding

:19:44. > :19:50.recently, inter national interest. He cannot recall anything with such

:19:50. > :19:56.a direct line to the royal family before. This is the first. It is

:19:56. > :20:00.very exciting. The three items are going -- are being sold separately

:20:00. > :20:09.in November. They are each expected to sell for between three and

:20:09. > :20:13.1,000. That is really romantic. Not quite

:20:13. > :20:18.so romantic, it is sport. Rotherham United's new ground

:20:18. > :20:23.should be fit -- should be finished in 35 weeks' time. Today they

:20:23. > :20:26.showed off the new debt of it. A new framework and a muddy field!

:20:26. > :20:31.Beside his off Don Street, and the stadium is costing around 20

:20:31. > :20:37.million. The work, good news, is on Segel and should be done by July

:20:37. > :20:41.next year. So they can do them for the start of next season. In the

:20:41. > :20:45.early days, sceptics were saying it would not happen. We are now

:20:45. > :20:50.showing people in Rotherham that even in bad times, investments are

:20:50. > :20:56.going in. They are going to witness the new stadium in Rotherham, which

:20:56. > :21:02.is going to be one of the finest in the week. We are now in a week 15

:21:02. > :21:07.with 35 weeks left, and it is coming fast now, it is good. They

:21:07. > :21:12.do go off we quickly, these modern stadiums. A big Meccano set, really.

:21:12. > :21:16.It is good stuff to watch. Staying on football, but with a

:21:17. > :21:21.slightly different angle. I want to ask you this question, how

:21:21. > :21:26.dedicated are due to your favourite team? At the weekend, my husband

:21:26. > :21:32.watch the rugby on Sunday, and, where the three of football matters

:21:32. > :21:38.on? Mind you, man City at, Spurs. You need an understanding wife,

:21:38. > :21:41.don't you? It has been driving me nuts. I cannot imagine what the

:21:41. > :21:45.wife of painter and decorator Gary Edwards thinks. By his own

:21:45. > :21:50.admission, he is completely obsessed with Leeds United. He has

:21:50. > :21:53.missed just one of their games in more than 40 years, and a new play

:21:53. > :22:01.about Gary called Paint it White is a train Yorkshire up at the moment.

:22:01. > :22:06.Here is a taste. You want be going to Queen's Park

:22:06. > :22:11.Rangers on Saturday, will you? nearly choked on my pillow. Had I

:22:11. > :22:15.not explain the facts of life? Leeds United were the facts of life,

:22:16. > :22:21.thou shalt not the rest one game. Commandment Number One. You used to

:22:21. > :22:26.love football. Gary, all women love football, until they get married.

:22:26. > :22:33.It is like having double lesson here, because we have the real Gary

:22:33. > :22:36.Edwards and also Les Rowley, who is deeply's producer. Can I just say

:22:36. > :22:41.that Paint it White is to do with the fact that you are a painter and

:22:41. > :22:45.decorator, and you will not paid anything red. You hate red. I was

:22:46. > :22:50.nervous about hours so -- about her couch. It has now been turned into

:22:50. > :22:56.a play, what is it like? They have any really good job. I was not

:22:56. > :23:03.apprehensive before, but intrigue. But they have done an absolutely

:23:03. > :23:08.fantastic job, I am proud of them all. What about the waste? Sea is

:23:08. > :23:11.absolutely outstanding in that, and it is amazing how close it is.

:23:11. > :23:17.dare tell you that your weight is listening to your every word in the

:23:17. > :23:20.corner of her studio. I reckon it is your wife that deserves a medal.

:23:20. > :23:26.Without a doubt, she has been absolutely fantastic. I could not

:23:26. > :23:36.do it without her. She did not go with you all the time, did she?

:23:36. > :23:37.

:23:37. > :23:41.Know. A few exotic pre-season games. Exotic games? I like? Italy. I was

:23:41. > :23:43.interested to read a quote that says it highlights the highs and

:23:43. > :23:49.lows and pitfalls of being fanatical, and is there is a

:23:49. > :23:53.fanatic, as in the? When I read Gary's book, I was interested in

:23:53. > :23:57.the sacrifice we all make to do something we enjoy. If Gary was not

:23:57. > :24:02.a football fan, he would be a nuclear submarine commander.

:24:02. > :24:07.would be very wealthy! He would be, and yes. I was interested in his

:24:07. > :24:10.humour. It was another step of showing Leeds as a city. His

:24:10. > :24:15.fanaticism and the club revolves around the prosperity of the city,

:24:15. > :24:21.I thought. Have you worked out how much you have spent? That is a

:24:21. > :24:25.question I have been asked all the time. He must have some idea?

:24:25. > :24:31.have no idea. It has gotten more expensive in the last few years. I

:24:31. > :24:38.know that. Really expensive. It cost 1,000 for two season tickets,

:24:38. > :24:42.home-and-away. It was not as expensive as that in the 60s.

:24:42. > :24:47.question, my oldest friend is even as fanatical as you about Leeds

:24:47. > :24:53.United. When are they going to do well again? This season, awfully!

:24:53. > :24:58.You really believe that? They are on course and they are doing OK. We

:24:58. > :25:04.have a good manager there, great supporters. Fingers crossed. I hope

:25:04. > :25:08.so, as you say, less, it reflects on the city as well. I still cannot

:25:08. > :25:11.get over it. More importantly, I cannot get over how your wife has

:25:11. > :25:19.led to get away with that for all of these years. She will be pulling

:25:19. > :25:29.faces. She is pulling faces. Another red jumper. You are in

:26:26. > :26:32.fading out towards dawn. With light winds in the south, we will see

:26:32. > :26:38.temperatures dropping down to single figures. Looking at the

:26:39. > :26:47.sometimes across the region, it rises tomorrow morning at 7:55am,
