:00:09. > :00:14.Welcome to Monday's edition of the programme.

:00:14. > :00:18.Tonight, fond farewells to a Yorkshire legend, as the City of

:00:18. > :00:23.Leeds decides how to remember Jimmy Savile, his showbiz friends paid

:00:23. > :00:28.tribute. A one-off, no one can beat Wright -- like him, no one will

:00:28. > :00:34.imitate him, if they try, they will be foolish. There is anyone Jimmy

:00:34. > :00:39.Savile and he is no longer with us. We would be hearing more from Peter

:00:39. > :00:42.Stringfellow. Also tonight, a multi-million-pound

:00:42. > :00:45.boost for Yorkshire's struggling economy, we will be hearing from

:00:45. > :00:49.some of the winners. And we meet the Yorkshire

:00:49. > :00:55.schoolchildren who have got to travel back in time to test a brand

:00:55. > :01:05.new Doctor Who game. A moody sky earlier on, will it

:01:05. > :01:12.

:01:12. > :01:16.stay dry for trick and treaters? Good evening. Tonight on Look North,

:01:16. > :01:22.we remember a true Yorkshire legend. Serge Jimmy Savile, who would have

:01:22. > :01:25.been 85 today, died in his sleep at the weekend. Plans are now under

:01:25. > :01:30.way for a permanent memorial for one of Britain's best known and

:01:30. > :01:33.trainers. Charlotte Leeming is at the Royal Armouries where a book of

:01:33. > :01:39.condolence has been opened. You have also been shown around his

:01:39. > :01:46.flat in Roundhay today? That's right. What an honour that was.

:01:46. > :01:51.Here at this a hall which was named after Sir Jimmy Savile Int 2007,

:01:52. > :01:59.very appropriate that this is where the book of opera -- but has been

:01:59. > :02:04.opened. People has been -- people have been signing it. I was lucky

:02:04. > :02:09.enough to meet up with Jimmy's nephew Roger earlier, he allowed me

:02:09. > :02:13.into Sir Jimmy's flat and it was eight reminder spending time in and

:02:13. > :02:19.around Roundhay, where he spent most of his life, how well loved

:02:19. > :02:25.this entertainer was. How do you do, ladies and gentlemen,

:02:25. > :02:29.good evening, welcome to Top Of The Pops. Welcome to Jim'll Fix It.

:02:29. > :02:33.helmet of platinum hair, the distinctive voice and ostentatious

:02:33. > :02:37.jewellery. For several decades, Sir Jimmy Savile was the base of

:02:37. > :02:41.British television. He once claimed to be the world's first-ever disc

:02:41. > :02:48.jockey, but it was his 19 years on Jim'll Fix It which made him a

:02:48. > :02:54.national institution. Dr Jim, please can you fix it for me to

:02:54. > :02:59.drive a high-speed train, I am six. Despite his wealth and fame, Sir

:02:59. > :03:05.Jimmy decided to live in the city where he was born. It was here

:03:05. > :03:08.where his body was filmed -- found on Saturday morning, he died in his

:03:08. > :03:13.sleep. Today, his nephew showed me round the place he called home for

:03:13. > :03:20.more than 30 years. He did not really associate with famous people

:03:20. > :03:23.All-Stars. He was more than happy when he was with ordinary people.

:03:23. > :03:29.Is one for loss of the in life was that these were the people who had

:03:29. > :03:33.put him in the position he was in - - his one of philosophy in life was

:03:33. > :03:36.that these were the people who had put him in the position he was in.

:03:36. > :03:40.He was a regular sight in the local shops and restaurants. Most

:03:40. > :03:44.mornings, he would meet up with his friends at this cafe, so how do

:03:44. > :03:48.they think one of the city's most famous sons should be remembered?

:03:48. > :03:55.We definitely need a statue. We have got the Mandela Square, we

:03:55. > :04:01.should call it the Jimmy Savile Square, why not? Utilise the

:04:01. > :04:07.facilities and put a statue up. lasting legacy for this ubiquitous

:04:07. > :04:11.presenter and prolific fund raiser is something Leeds council are now

:04:11. > :04:15.considering. Most of our staff had already met him in some pot of

:04:15. > :04:20.their lives in the last few years, which is a tremendous tribute to

:04:20. > :04:27.him being one of the Leeds people. He may have been a private man, but

:04:27. > :04:30.his home is full of souvenirs and mementoes which reflect a life full

:04:30. > :04:34.of achievement. He chose to live alone but it seems he was anything

:04:34. > :04:38.but lonely. When you look at some of these

:04:38. > :04:44.photos in this hall tonight, he was with cold is Presley and the

:04:45. > :04:51.Beatles, showing what an important figure he was -- he bores with

:04:51. > :04:56.Elvis Presley. Next week, hundreds of people are are expecting its at

:04:56. > :04:59.his funeral. We are told tonight that some of his friends and family

:04:59. > :05:05.will be meeting at one of his favourite restaurants in round cake

:05:05. > :05:12.to celebrate his life. He was one of the best-known faces

:05:12. > :05:17.in show business put up for decades, his pioneering radio and TV shows

:05:17. > :05:23.attracted millions of viewers. But it began in humble beginnings in

:05:23. > :05:30.the city he loves, in Leeds. really is mine! It is mine, I am

:05:30. > :05:34.telling you! A proud moment, Sir Jimmy, a night of the realm,

:05:34. > :05:38.honoured for a lifetime of charity work. I was born into a family

:05:38. > :05:43.which raised money for all manner of things. Anything to make --

:05:43. > :05:48.raise money for the troops, the lad abroad. And I grew up in that

:05:48. > :05:53.atmosphere, and I kept it going, just like someone born into a

:05:53. > :05:57.circus family goes into the circus. Jimmy was the youngest of seven and

:05:57. > :06:02.his mother, the Duchess, was the only woman in his life. Four years,

:06:02. > :06:11.he lived in Leeds in his old fat -- old family home, casually part in

:06:11. > :06:14.the Rolls-Royce outside. He became a potent symbol of his

:06:14. > :06:21.fund-raising, first as a professional reader, then Marathon

:06:21. > :06:27.man. His eyesight was not good enough for war service, so he was

:06:27. > :06:31.drafted into the minds and stayed for seven years. -- he was drafted

:06:31. > :06:34.into mining. He fell into the wrestling game. What he really

:06:34. > :06:43.wanted was a job working with his favourite things, pop music and

:06:43. > :06:48.girls. He found it managing dance halls for Mecca, which leads to his

:06:48. > :06:53.next career move, DJ-ing. present record in a dance hall, you

:06:53. > :06:59.did not have to be a suit and a collar and tie. You had to be a

:06:59. > :07:09.character. And naturally, I was always a character, and still am,

:07:09. > :07:11.

:07:11. > :07:18.as a matter of fact. Its number one, Welcome to this week's top DJ,

:07:18. > :07:23.Jimmy Savile! In the middle of all this, Jimmy started work as a

:07:23. > :07:27.volunteer porter at the LG I. He wanted to do more than -- more to

:07:27. > :07:31.help so his charity work at hospitals really took off. Good

:07:32. > :07:35.evening, or welcome to another edition of Jim'll Fix It. A more

:07:35. > :07:40.conventional image during the Jim'll Fix It years. It became one

:07:40. > :07:50.of the most popular children's TB programmes in the late 1970s and

:07:50. > :07:51.

:07:51. > :07:54.More recently, around the time of his 80th birthday, Sir Jimmy

:07:54. > :07:59.revealed more intimate details of his life to journalist Louis

:07:59. > :08:03.Theroux. Marvellous, I'm like a butcher's dog, as it happens, and

:08:03. > :08:07.has nothing more fitter and stronger than a butcher's dog. All

:08:07. > :08:11.the scraps, bones and have. could not bring goals home because

:08:11. > :08:16.your mother would not let you sleep with winning -- women? I did not

:08:16. > :08:21.want to sleep with them! To be with them, anything more than two hours,

:08:21. > :08:24.brain damage. There are so many things so Jimmy Savile will be

:08:24. > :08:29.remembered for. He was one of Yorkshire's most eccentric

:08:29. > :08:34.characters. You come in here with a bloke of beautiful ladies around

:08:34. > :08:39.smoking cigars, that could be my idea, I would have died and gone to

:08:39. > :08:44.heaven. Thank you so much to Howard Silverman, he was the best man at

:08:44. > :08:49.your wedding and best friend. was a natural thing, you ask your

:08:49. > :08:54.best Powell to be the best man, and at the time, I said, Jimmy, I

:08:54. > :09:01.wanted to be my best man. He was the only person I would ask. He

:09:01. > :09:06.said to me, you can't get married! He said, you have signed a pact. We

:09:06. > :09:13.signed a pact years ago. Whoever is the first one to get married, we

:09:13. > :09:17.have got to top that person, I am sending the lads round with the

:09:17. > :09:23.American -- Italian accents! you did get married. Yes, he was a

:09:23. > :09:27.great best man, a great speech. he did not wear a shell-suit, I

:09:27. > :09:34.asked him to wear a suit? I said, do me a favour, we are having a

:09:34. > :09:38.nice do, do not wear this. He said, I will wear my shell-suit. He said,

:09:38. > :09:46.only millionaires and trumps can get away with wearing its shell

:09:46. > :09:51.suits. When I went round, he had the beautiful suit on. He had the

:09:51. > :09:55.night had round his neck. He looked great. In two weeks' time, he was

:09:55. > :10:01.due to turn the Christmas lights on and he had said to your mate Dave,

:10:01. > :10:10.he said, I am going to wear my hair. No medallions, because I loved

:10:10. > :10:15.Ilkley. He phoned me up the same night and said, I am turning the

:10:15. > :10:19.light on in Ilkley. It is his birthday today as well. We will

:10:19. > :10:24.talk more about his eccentricities in the moment, but let's hear from

:10:24. > :10:29.Peter Stringfellow. You can't really say Jimmy Savile without

:10:29. > :10:34.smiling. I am sure he would not mind even though he is no longer

:10:34. > :10:38.with us. Jimmy Savile, you have got to smile. Does anyone remember

:10:38. > :10:45.Jimmy not smiling or being happy? Has anyone got any memories of him

:10:45. > :10:50.being nasty on camera, or sad? I have not. We had earlier, people

:10:50. > :10:55.said he was an eccentric. Some people said he was a loner, but you

:10:55. > :11:02.save it is not the case. complete opposite. I have been pals

:11:02. > :11:08.with him for 40 years, Tony Blackburn said he was alone on TV.

:11:08. > :11:13.Jimmy was not like that. He'd never even had a coquette in the house,

:11:13. > :11:20.he went out every single night. -- never even had a cooker in the

:11:20. > :11:25.house. A wise man! I think what it was, he was friends with the royal

:11:25. > :11:31.family. He was friends with Elvis, he was friends with Mrs Thatcher,

:11:31. > :11:37.he went three times or four times to Mrs Thatcher's... But his real

:11:37. > :11:42.friends were ordinary Leeds broke. Ordinary people. As I always say,

:11:42. > :11:48.someone like me, a hairdresser, I used to do his hair when he had it

:11:48. > :11:55.Beasant. -- when he had it decent! You are going for a celebration

:11:55. > :11:58.tonight, to say happy birthday, you are taking a picture, let's just

:11:58. > :12:05.see what Peter Stringfellow thinks his legacy to the world of DJ-ing

:12:05. > :12:15.will be. It was Jimmy who started the showmen D J. No one was a

:12:15. > :12:15.

:12:15. > :12:25.showman BJ, anyone who is a showman the day-to-day cannot say it is

:12:25. > :12:28.because -- it is not because of Jimmy Savile. I quickly became my

:12:28. > :12:33.own personality when I was the DJ because of him. He influenced so

:12:33. > :12:40.many people. Jimmy Savile was running around anywhere in Leeds,

:12:40. > :12:46.and all of the disc jockeys look like Jimmy Savile! He was clever, p

:12:46. > :12:49.encouraged that. He was determined to pay tribute. Can I say one thing

:12:49. > :12:53.was like you gave him the opportunity to be your best man,

:12:53. > :12:56.but he gave you a job to do when he passed away. A job that was

:12:56. > :13:03.important that he thought a lot about. I hope you do not think it

:13:03. > :13:09.is to in Tricia to ask what that was. -- too intrusive. Not at all.

:13:09. > :13:14.He wanted the words, on the grave, I have told his family this, it was

:13:14. > :13:18.good while it lasted. It was one heck of a time, and I am privileged

:13:18. > :13:23.to have been his friend. It has opened doors that I would never

:13:24. > :13:28.have had. I have met so many famous people and all down to Jimmy.

:13:28. > :13:36.a glass for him tonight and say happy birthday. We will, there is a

:13:36. > :13:41.We have had hundreds of comments from you about Sir Jimmy and we

:13:42. > :13:48.would like to know how you think he should be remembered. He compares

:13:48. > :13:58.should be remembered. He compares to comment on our Facebook page. Or

:13:58. > :14:03.

:14:03. > :14:07.send us an e-mail. Or you can tweet Coming up: A question of safety -

:14:07. > :14:14.just how reliable are figures would say that the Leeds children's heart

:14:15. > :14:18.surgery unit should close? A 143 million public money

:14:18. > :14:22.investment is to be pumped into the Yorkshire economy to kick-start

:14:22. > :14:26.job-creation. The cash will include a multi-million-pound loan to

:14:26. > :14:30.Sheffield Forgemasters, nearly two years after a similar loan was

:14:30. > :14:34.controversially withdrawn by the coalition government. It is thought

:14:34. > :14:41.the whole package should lead to around 3,000 new jobs. Forgemasters

:14:41. > :14:45.will receive a loan worth about 36 million. The Westfield project in

:14:45. > :14:51.Bradford city centre against a 70 million boost. Our political editor

:14:51. > :14:55.has the details. Nick Clegg in a Forgemasters hard

:14:55. > :14:59.hat and safety glasses - just 17 months after he provoked a

:14:59. > :15:03.political storm by backing the cancellation of an 80 million

:15:03. > :15:07.development loan to the Sheffield steel components maker of. This

:15:07. > :15:11.morning, he was at the plant making a rather different announcement.

:15:11. > :15:15.is fantastic news that we have been able to announce today that

:15:15. > :15:20.Forgemasters will receive a multi- million-pound loan. They Deputy

:15:20. > :15:25.Prime Minister denies it is a U- turn, insisting the company itself

:15:25. > :15:28.made a new bid for backing from the Government's regional growth fund.

:15:28. > :15:32.A 36 million pound loan this time, which is says will allow it to take

:15:32. > :15:37.an increasing part of the international market for nuclear

:15:37. > :15:40.power station components. We said all along we were keen to continue

:15:40. > :15:50.to support the company and we have now, through the regional growth

:15:50. > :15:51.

:15:51. > :15:55.fund - which are set up and over see - -- which I set up. Do I am

:15:55. > :15:59.delighted we have been able to support the expansion of Sheffield

:15:59. > :16:03.Forgemasters in the way they say they want, here in Sheffield.

:16:03. > :16:07.Clegg has, at last, listened to the people of the city. They have been

:16:07. > :16:11.telling him for 18 months that he got this wrong and today he has

:16:11. > :16:17.acknowledged that. An apology would have been nice, but we will take

:16:17. > :16:21.what we have got. Another of the 24 successful bids across Yorkshire is

:16:21. > :16:24.a 17 million grant to tackle the problem of Bradford's in from the

:16:24. > :16:28.city centre black hole. Dogged by a lack of private investment, the

:16:28. > :16:32.city council will use the money to offer rate reductions as incentives

:16:32. > :16:35.for shops and businesses wanting to move into a new development here.

:16:35. > :16:39.It is affecting jobs in the town and businesses in the town, by not

:16:39. > :16:44.being able to get the town centre sorted out and brought into the

:16:44. > :16:47.21st century. The fund will now enable them to do that. It is very

:16:47. > :16:51.good news, not just for the town centre but for the whole of

:16:51. > :16:56.Bradford. In a separate announcement, the government

:16:56. > :16:59.confirmed 1000 more construction jobs, replacing the partially

:16:59. > :17:05.demolished a coal-fired power station just north of Doncaster

:17:05. > :17:10.with a gas-fired plant. Also, an additional motive fuel incineration

:17:11. > :17:14.plant alongside the Ferrybridge power station near Pontefract.

:17:14. > :17:18.The Chief Constable of North Yorkshire, who admitted gross

:17:18. > :17:21.misconduct earlier this year, could be paid 200,000 at the end of his

:17:21. > :17:25.contract under Home Office regulations. Graham Maxwell helped

:17:25. > :17:30.a relative in a recruitment exercise. The Police authority

:17:30. > :17:34.decided not to renew his contract. The funeral of a Leeds businessman,

:17:34. > :17:38.Arshad Chaudhry, has been held today. He founded the Asian

:17:38. > :17:43.business network and spoke out against extremism in his role on

:17:43. > :17:48.the Leeds Muslim Forum. He died of cancer this weekend.

:17:48. > :17:54.A BBC investigation will tonight investigate children's heart

:17:54. > :18:00.services, which could seat children's heart surgery in Leeds

:18:00. > :18:04.stop. BBC Yorkshire's Inside Out programme has spoken to a number of

:18:04. > :18:09.independent experts from Britain and abroad who don't accept the

:18:09. > :18:13.criteria being used to make decisions about the unit.

:18:13. > :18:17.Emily Taylor is six years old and is having an operation to fix a

:18:17. > :18:21.hole in her heart. She is one of around 3,500 children who will

:18:21. > :18:30.undergo surgery this year. For families, it is an extremely

:18:30. > :18:39.worrying time. It has just been dreadful. We had to try and cope,

:18:39. > :18:43.be strong. Slightly further down. But the way children's heart

:18:43. > :18:48.surgery in England is carried out is about to change. The NHS police

:18:48. > :18:51.surgical centres must have four surgeons carrying out a minimum of

:18:51. > :18:55.400 operations a year, to ensure their skills are well practised. To

:18:55. > :18:59.achieve this, some centres would need to close and be consolidated

:18:59. > :19:05.into fewer, bigger units. But there have been questions about where

:19:05. > :19:10.this figure has come from. We spoke to a US-based author of three of

:19:10. > :19:14.the seven key reports considered by the NHS review team. If one has to

:19:14. > :19:22.make a decision, and one wants to base it on the data that is in

:19:22. > :19:27.existence, the number of 350 cases per year for a centre-back wants to

:19:27. > :19:33.be -- a centre that wants to be adept in all areas of congenital

:19:33. > :19:41.heart surgery is reasonable. If the figure was lower, say 350, arguably

:19:41. > :19:46.more Donitz might remain viable under the proposals. -- more units.

:19:46. > :19:48.The basis is having enough work to keep the surgeons' skill and to

:19:48. > :19:55.have enough surgeons working together to be able to have a

:19:55. > :20:00.proper training environment, and the ability for surgeons to do the

:20:00. > :20:04.difficult tasks together. We are able to close this directly.

:20:04. > :20:07.children's heart surgery unit in Leeds is one of five across the

:20:07. > :20:13.country facing closure. The NHS says the results should be

:20:13. > :20:18.announced by the end of the year. There is a special Inside Out

:20:18. > :20:21.programme tonight, looking at that issue.

:20:21. > :20:25.Doncaster Rovers need all the help they can get at the moment. They

:20:25. > :20:28.have only one two games all season and are second bottom of the

:20:28. > :20:38.championship, but had signed controversial striker El-Hadji

:20:38. > :20:48.Diouf on a three-month loan. The best of the action from all our

:20:48. > :20:52.

:20:52. > :20:56.behind early in the first half. Joe Mason shops another player before

:20:56. > :21:05.scoring for Cardiff. Leeds battered their opposition for the rest of

:21:05. > :21:09.the game, until a player pounded to deep in the penalty area. Doncaster

:21:09. > :21:17.Rovers are at the opposite end of the table but a smart finish from

:21:17. > :21:26.this player rescued a draw. Barnsley suffered disappointment

:21:26. > :21:31.against their opponents. Huddersfield Town are now 41

:21:31. > :21:35.unbeaten in regular League One matches. This player brought a late

:21:35. > :21:44.winner at The Oval. Shed built Wednesday are one place

:21:44. > :21:51.behind. Baby to Wycombe thanks to this goal. -- Sheffield Wednesday.

:21:51. > :21:55.This is one of eight goals you can see on the BBC's Board website.

:21:55. > :22:00.Chesterfield have only picked up one point from the air -- their

:22:00. > :22:06.last seven matches. This call was not enough as Brentfield bid them
