:00:14. > :00:16.Good evening. The headlines this Friday evening: The death of one

:00:16. > :00:23.Yorkshire serviceman and the repatriation of another, a stark

:00:23. > :00:30.reminder of the sacrifices made. We'll be in both their home towns

:00:30. > :00:34.as two minutes silence is observed. And we're also with injured soldier

:00:34. > :00:37.Ben Parkinson, for the first time in five years able to stand to pay

:00:37. > :00:43.his respects. Also tonight: A funeral with full police honours

:00:43. > :00:49.for the traffic policeman killed on the M1 helping a stranded motorist.

:00:50. > :00:59.And back with the big boys. FC Halifax Town in the first round of

:00:59. > :01:09.the FA Cup. It has been another overcast day today. Will the sun

:01:09. > :01:15.

:01:15. > :01:19.Good evening. People across Yorkshire paused for two minutes

:01:19. > :01:27.today to mark the sacrifices made by servicemen and women since

:01:27. > :01:33.arriving in Afghanistan in 2001. 33 people from our region have been

:01:33. > :01:38.killed in action. On Armistice Day, we tell you the story of three men.

:01:38. > :01:44.Yes, of the TA soldier Matthew Thornton who was killed on

:01:44. > :01:51.Wednesday. And in North Yorkshire, Matthew Haseldin's name was read

:01:51. > :01:55.out. We also remember those injured. In a moment, Ben Parkinson will

:01:55. > :02:02.walk to a service for the first time. Before that, our first report

:02:02. > :02:05.tonight begins in Barnsley. Private Matthew Thornton in June

:02:05. > :02:09.this year preparing to go to war with the Yorkshire Regiment. He was

:02:09. > :02:14.a volunteer soldier. He went to the front line and paid the ultimate

:02:14. > :02:24.prize. At the going down of the Sun, and in the morning, we will

:02:24. > :02:33.

:02:33. > :02:36.remember them. A we will remember And this morning in Barnsley,

:02:36. > :02:43.hundreds gathered to remember him and all those who have given their

:02:43. > :02:47.lives are serving their country. do have good turnout on Armistice

:02:47. > :02:54.Day in Barnsley, but obviously today, given the sad news about

:02:54. > :02:59.Matthew, or it has been bigger than usual. Private Matthew Thornton was

:02:59. > :03:05.28 and came from the village of tartan. He died in a bomb explosion

:03:05. > :03:10.in Helmand on Wednesday. He was a factory worker. Like to buy or his

:03:10. > :03:17.colleagues and he will be sadly missed. -- like to buy all his

:03:17. > :03:20.colleagues. We put our wish is up to his family and friends. I met

:03:20. > :03:24.his unit in Wales as they trained for their tour of duty in

:03:24. > :03:29.Afghanistan. It was clear these part-time soldiers were ready and

:03:29. > :03:35.willing to go and fight and they knew the potential risks. You would

:03:35. > :03:41.have to be stupid not to be apprehensive. The training

:03:41. > :03:48.mitigates most of the risks. Most, but not all. Back in Barnsley this

:03:48. > :03:54.morning, they recognised private Matthew Thornton's sacrifice.

:03:54. > :04:04.Really proud of them. We hope this is the last one, we know for a fact

:04:04. > :04:08.

:04:08. > :04:14.it won't be. Family's like Matthew Haseldin's. He was shot in Helmand

:04:14. > :04:21.last Thursday. He was 21. He only joined the Army eight months ago.

:04:21. > :04:28.Much sadness at the pub where he worked before then. He's in very

:04:28. > :04:31.high regard. He was a very nice person. The only time I have seen

:04:31. > :04:37.grown men burst into tears at the bar when they heard the news about

:04:37. > :04:43.Matthew. His body was brought back to the UK yesterday. Matthew

:04:43. > :04:48.Thornton's coffin will be returned next week. Barnsley's Town Hall

:04:48. > :04:56.flag was at half-mast for him today. Two young Yorkshire soldiers killed,

:04:56. > :04:59.two more names to remember. Silence fell across Yorkshire earlier as

:04:59. > :05:09.people paused for Armistice Day to mark the 11th hour of the 11th day

:05:09. > :05:31.

:05:31. > :05:34.At Imphal Barracks in York, all staff attended the ceremony to

:05:35. > :05:38.remember military personnel who had fallen in active service. Elsewhere,

:05:38. > :05:48.people of all ages gathered at war memorials across our region to mark

:05:48. > :05:55.

:05:55. > :06:05.the significance of both the date There were many veterans among the

:06:05. > :06:12.

:06:12. > :06:14.crowds, as well as school children Emma Glasbey has been at a

:06:14. > :06:19.particularly special Armistice Day service in Doncaster with Lance

:06:19. > :06:25.Bombardier Ben Parkinson and she joins us now. Emma, some very

:06:25. > :06:29.moving scenes there today. Absolutely. Ben Parkinson lost both

:06:29. > :06:33.his legs in an explosion in Afghanistan five years ago. Today,

:06:33. > :06:36.people stopped in the street in Doncaster and watched Ben get out

:06:36. > :06:41.of his wheelchair and walked towards the service at the Mansion

:06:41. > :06:45.House. Spontaneous applause broke out, and then actually stood for

:06:45. > :06:50.the entire service, about 15 or 20 minutes. You're about to see the

:06:50. > :07:00.progress he has made and it is a but -- it is remarkable. It was a

:07:00. > :07:04.moment filled with pride. Lance Bombardier Ben Parkinson walking to

:07:04. > :07:14.take his place in Doncaster. Find his ago, he lost both his legs in

:07:14. > :07:14.

:07:14. > :07:20.Afghanistan and suffered brain damage -- five years ago. How did

:07:20. > :07:27.it feel? It has always been a massive goal to stand and pay his

:07:27. > :07:37.respects during the silence. How is your recovery going? Unbelievably

:07:37. > :07:41.

:07:41. > :07:45.well. Still a lot further to go. the age of just 22, Ben was caught

:07:45. > :07:51.up in an explosion last on patrol. He became the most seriously

:07:51. > :07:57.injured British serviceman to survive his wounds. He was never

:07:57. > :08:00.expected to live, so to come this far has astonished everyone.

:08:00. > :08:04.the textbooks written by the medics say you should not be here. He

:08:04. > :08:14.should be lying in a bed, not quite in a vegetative state, but not far

:08:14. > :08:20.off. He just does what he wants. Ben is almost certainly Yorkshire's

:08:20. > :08:24.best known wartime hero. He is a familiar face at events like this

:08:24. > :08:29.one held at Bradford. It was a good opportunity for him to catch up

:08:29. > :08:34.with old friends. I have seen him frustrated with himself a couple of

:08:34. > :08:40.times, but he has carried on fighting. The situation he has got

:08:40. > :08:45.himself in now, it is remarkable. After a very public battle, Benn

:08:45. > :08:50.has not been told he can stay in the army to continue his recovery -

:08:50. > :08:59.- Benn has now been told. He is determined to walk tall without

:08:59. > :09:07.help, and no one would bet against him. Inspirational story. We do get

:09:07. > :09:09.them on this programme. Many of you have been in touch with us today

:09:09. > :09:13.via our Facebook page after seeing those pictures of Ben Parkinson.

:09:13. > :09:19.Jennifer Jensen says it makes her feel humble. Ben is so dignified

:09:19. > :09:28.yet bold in his rehabilitation. Adrian Priestley says, an airborne

:09:28. > :09:32.warrior through and through. Christine Greening writes, good for

:09:32. > :09:39.him. I was in Scarborough Morrisons for the two minutes silence. You

:09:39. > :09:46.could have heard a pin drop. And you can post to comment on a

:09:46. > :09:52.Facebook page 4 send us an e-mail. -- post your comment on a Facebook

:09:52. > :09:56.page or send us. Stay with us, coming up later: Full police

:09:56. > :10:06.honours. Hundreds attend Wakefield Cathedral for the funeral of

:10:06. > :10:06.

:10:06. > :10:12.traffic policeman killed helping others on the M1. 690 jobs could be

:10:12. > :10:15.lost at Sheffield City Council. It has to save 55 million next year

:10:15. > :10:18.because it will get less from the government. Councillors have

:10:18. > :10:24.notified unit that -- unions this afternoon about possible

:10:24. > :10:31.redundancies, while officials are being asked to work out detailed

:10:31. > :10:35.money-saving proposals. It is that time of year again. The nights are

:10:35. > :10:45.drawing in, here comes Christmas. So councils stop to think about the

:10:45. > :10:49.

:10:49. > :10:57.next financial idea at the end of March. Let's start -- take a look

:10:57. > :11:06.at what they need to save. Inhered two they have got to save 55

:11:06. > :11:16.million. -- India to. The actual cost they have got to save his 40

:11:16. > :11:18.

:11:18. > :11:23.million. How many jobs could be at risk was? May be as many as 690.

:11:23. > :11:29.This is the harsh reality of power. What will you do? It is not

:11:29. > :11:37.decisions any of us want to take, but we have got the workforce, the

:11:37. > :11:42.political will that we will work through and find the budget. We

:11:43. > :11:48.need to ensure we are reducing the impact on jobs. 690 is the absolute

:11:48. > :11:52.maximum we are expecting. We think we can bring you down there were,

:11:52. > :12:02.it is a technical paper we need to put to the government. At least at

:12:02. > :12:06.this puts it into the public realm. Are you going to consult the

:12:06. > :12:15.public? It sounds like you have already made your mind up, six and

:12:15. > :12:19.90 jobs. The need to make a detailed analysis and work out what

:12:19. > :12:23.we need to look at again. It picks out the figures of the jobs that

:12:23. > :12:27.could go under these proposals if we accept them all. That is why we

:12:27. > :12:32.are doing this. We will now go to the public with the detail later in

:12:33. > :12:42.the year to put the proposals to them, asked their opinions and seek

:12:42. > :12:45.their views on things. Thank you for joining us. How academic a

:12:45. > :12:51.these exercises? You start with hundreds of jobs going and it ends

:12:51. > :12:56.up being a fraction of that number. How worried should your arm -- your

:12:56. > :13:04.members be? 750 jobs had disappeared in this city in the

:13:04. > :13:08.last year. Another 690 are at risk. We have to work with that number,

:13:08. > :13:12.we will work with the council to drive that number down to the

:13:12. > :13:16.lowest we possibly can. The conversations we need to have with

:13:16. > :13:21.this council, we need to be talking about enterprising ways of

:13:21. > :13:25.delivering services in the city. We need to be here -- innovative.

:13:25. > :13:32.There are lots of ideas in the trade unions and the workforce

:13:32. > :13:35.about how we can do that. Thank you very much indeed. We have heard

:13:35. > :13:39.from the Sheffield City Council opposition group, the Lib Dems,

:13:39. > :13:48.saying they fear a slash-and-burn approach. We will keep you up-to-

:13:48. > :13:52.A former South Yorkshire Police constable has been jailed for 10

:13:52. > :13:59.years for masterminding Britain's biggest ever VAT fraud. Nigel

:13:59. > :14:06.Cranswick was the director of Ideas 2 Go. He generated paperwork so he

:14:06. > :14:11.could claim back 365 million in VAT from Revenue and Customs. Five

:14:11. > :14:18.other people were convicted for related offences. The company was a

:14:18. > :14:23.complete sham. They set up a company selling mobile phones. It

:14:23. > :14:31.escalated in a short period of time to 527 million worth of trading.

:14:31. > :14:36.They set up a bank account. Be complete company was an absolute

:14:36. > :14:39.fabrication. A man who was jailed for murdering his wife in a post

:14:39. > :14:44.office is to appeal against his conviction. 4-6-year-old Robin

:14:44. > :14:48.Garbutt was found guilty of murdering Diana Garbutt and

:14:48. > :14:56.sentenced to life. He was told he must serve at least 20 years behind

:14:56. > :14:59.bars. Dannatt was found dead in March last year. Today Mr Garbutt's

:15:00. > :15:06.barrister formally lodged an appeal. A a man has been found not guilty

:15:06. > :15:10.of causing the death of a 15-year- old in a road crash. Natalia Wiley

:15:10. > :15:13.died while travelling as a passenger at near Pickering in Dan

:15:13. > :15:17.Reed. Daniel Jeminson was cleared by causing death of dangerous

:15:17. > :15:21.driving. 19-year-old Robert Turnbull has already pleaded guilty

:15:21. > :15:24.to the same charge. Hundreds of police officers have

:15:24. > :15:30.laid to rest one of their colleagues, a traffic officer

:15:30. > :15:34.killed on duty on the M1 last month. Mark Goodlad was trying to help a

:15:34. > :15:37.motorist who had broken down. His funeral took place this

:15:37. > :15:47.afternoon at Wakefield Cathedral where he was given full police on

:15:47. > :15:49.

:15:49. > :15:55.-- full police on us. He had served for 10 years. Mark Goodlad's family

:15:55. > :16:02.by request in the police car. At Wakefield Cathedral, his widow,

:16:02. > :16:08.Helen, his 14-year-old son receives his father's police hat. His dad

:16:08. > :16:13.was soon to have become a dog handler. His dog was there. He has

:16:13. > :16:17.left us in tragic circumstances so we are here to mourn and here to

:16:17. > :16:22.give thanks for the life of an exemplary police officer. He

:16:22. > :16:28.encompassed everything that was good about a good police officer.

:16:28. > :16:33.At the funeral service, the chief constable in his eulogy to Mark

:16:33. > :16:40.Goodlad adopted the immortal words, he shall not grow old the nor

:16:40. > :16:45.become wary, his memory will end Dewar. Never, he said, had a public

:16:45. > :16:51.servant been so aptly named than Mark Goodlad. It is such an

:16:51. > :16:56.ordinary act, an ordinary act of public service. It is not facing

:16:56. > :17:00.the criminal with the gun or the crowd. It is not dashing into a

:17:00. > :17:07.terrorist situation where a bomb might go off. This is what

:17:07. > :17:13.policemen do every day. That is why it is so poignant. His colleagues

:17:13. > :17:17.can say, with justification, it could have been me? Hundreds

:17:17. > :17:21.watched outside. This gentleman gave his life of somebody else,

:17:21. > :17:27.that is the ultimate price you can pay. He was doing his job and he

:17:27. > :17:33.was killed. It is awful. Every time I see a poppy growing at the side

:17:33. > :17:40.of a motorway, I will think of him. The on this day, the chief

:17:40. > :17:46.constable's tribute to Mark Goodlad and his family.

:17:46. > :17:51.Thank you. Before 7pm: harking back to the good old days. The stadium

:17:51. > :17:57.and the Menem that may have changed, but to the Shaymen are hoping for

:17:57. > :18:05.more giant-killing feats -- the stadium and the name may have

:18:05. > :18:14.changed. They have just changed their name.

:18:14. > :18:20.They have put FC instead of Halifax. -- in front of Halifax.

:18:20. > :18:27.Intimidating atmosphere at Hull. New Zealand will have to face them

:18:27. > :18:31.and his childhood hero. It is so split. The we will find out. They

:18:31. > :18:35.have not named at the team yet. When it takes all, pick the cliche

:18:35. > :18:39.you like, England take on New Zealand tomorrow knowing that only

:18:39. > :18:42.victory will do if they will have - - if they want to have another

:18:42. > :18:46.crack a to Australia in the Four Nations final.

:18:46. > :18:52.Buoyed up by a positive performance in defeat to Australia, it was back

:18:52. > :18:57.to hard graft in Loughborough. The reigning world Four Nations

:18:57. > :19:02.champions New Zealand are up next. We know it is going to be really

:19:02. > :19:07.difficult. We have a great coach and we are really fired up. To be

:19:07. > :19:11.at this stage and have a deciding game still in the group stage is

:19:11. > :19:17.fantastic. Both teams will be ready for it. We are expecting a really

:19:17. > :19:22.tough game. We have only one one out of the last 10 against England

:19:22. > :19:32.in England. We know it is going to be a big challenge him. Big home

:19:32. > :19:35.

:19:35. > :19:39.That is an impossible try! Show, my word!

:19:39. > :19:44.All the talk of promise, England know they need to do more. They are

:19:44. > :19:51.building towards the 2013 World Cup, but this is a team that wants

:19:51. > :19:56.success sooner rather than later. think we are ready. The group, in

:19:56. > :20:00.terms of belief, is ready to go to the next stage. But we have to win

:20:00. > :20:04.the game. It is as simple as that. We have to put in a really good

:20:04. > :20:10.performance against New Zealand. That will give us a great

:20:10. > :20:14.opportunity to get to the next stage. England are still waiting on

:20:14. > :20:18.the fitness of the captain. They will name their side at the last

:20:18. > :20:22.possible moment. Staying with rugby league.

:20:22. > :20:26.Wakefield's Glenn Morrison has been forced to retire. He suffered a

:20:26. > :20:31.seemingly innocuous injury in the first week of pre-season. Medical

:20:31. > :20:34.experts have confirmed he will need major surgery on his left shoulder.

:20:34. > :20:38.He will still be with the club as an assistant coach.

:20:38. > :20:43.In cricket, of Yorkshire are set to appoint Jason Gillespie as their

:20:43. > :20:47.first team coach. If they did 6- year-old fast bowler spent two

:20:47. > :20:51.seasons at Headingley. He will work alongside Martyn Moxon. Yorkshire

:20:51. > :20:55.are expected to confirm his appointment and the rest of the

:20:55. > :21:03.coaching team next week. Football, this weekend it is the

:21:03. > :21:08.first round proper of this season's FA Cup. FC Halifax are back with

:21:09. > :21:16.the big boys and will play Cheltenham on Sunday. -- told them

:21:16. > :21:22.on Sunday. We will give it our best shot. Charlton are an exceptional

:21:22. > :21:28.side. It may be our turn on Sunday Tostock Bobby Hamm has already

:21:28. > :21:35.given up the papers the headlines, to preview the biggest match yet.

:21:35. > :21:42.It looks different than the last time. New year's date 1990, Halifax

:21:43. > :21:47.Town, one. Manchester City, zero. Any reporters expecting the old

:21:47. > :21:53.track and crumbling terraces will be disappointed. Since the rebirth

:21:53. > :21:57.of the club as a FC Halifax town in 2008, two promotions have gone

:21:57. > :22:03.hand-in-hand with an impressive rebrand. It would now not look out

:22:03. > :22:09.of place in Charlton's division, three leagues above. We are

:22:09. > :22:12.building a nice little club. This is going to put us on the map. The

:22:13. > :22:17.ultimate boss is to get back into the football league. We are trying

:22:17. > :22:23.to build up a solid foundation, both on and off the field. It is

:22:23. > :22:30.just like coming to a league ground. Maybe you should have kept the

:22:30. > :22:35.ground?! It would have been better. Can you not switch the hot water

:22:35. > :22:39.off? I would rather flood the pitch. The weather gods have even been

:22:39. > :22:44.trying to do that already for Halifax Town as the squad prepared

:22:44. > :22:51.this week. Sheffield Wednesday also have to wait until Sunday for their

:22:51. > :22:58.tie. Before that on Saturday, Bradford go to Hampshire to face

:22:58. > :23:00.one of the happened coming names from southern non- league football.

:23:00. > :23:06.Sheffield United and Huddersfield Town and Rotherham United are also

:23:06. > :23:09.playing. Bradford City, there is no chance of a penalty shoot-out in

:23:09. > :23:16.this tie. But there might be if they can force a replay against

:23:16. > :23:22.Rochdale. You never know. Can I just plug the highlights for

:23:22. > :23:32.the rugby league. That is on Sunday at 4pm. On BBC Two. Are you sure it

:23:32. > :23:33.

:23:33. > :23:40.is at 4pm? Absolutely sure of. I can't believe she did that!

:23:40. > :23:44.Just ahead of the weather, later tonight we will have Chris Evans

:23:44. > :23:50.presenting a special BBC programme looking back at the life of Jimmy

:23:50. > :24:00.Savile. It is called Jimmy Savile: As It 'appened. It is here on BBC

:24:00. > :24:04.

:24:04. > :24:10.One at 8:30pm. Dull, drizzly. It will get better

:24:10. > :24:20.over the weekend. We have had some lovely photos. We do not know where

:24:20. > :24:22.

:24:22. > :24:28.it is from. The police do not seem to mind the weather. Keep your

:24:28. > :24:35.photos coming in -- v East do not seem to mind. It has been dull and

:24:35. > :24:39.damp. It will brighten up tomorrow. Rain overnight. A better chance of

:24:39. > :24:46.some sunshine tomorrow before the warm front pushes back up from the

:24:46. > :24:50.south. The satellite picture from today shows it clearly. The cloud,
