:00:09. > :00:12.Welcome to Friday's Look North. Tonight: The cost of a car in the

:00:12. > :00:22.country - should people living in rural areas of North Yorkshire get

:00:22. > :00:22.

:00:22. > :00:25.cut-price fuel? It is the pump prices and distance from the pumps

:00:25. > :00:28.that but a key issue. Also tonight: The latest on the

:00:28. > :00:31.night-time attacks on young people in Leeds - six are arrested as

:00:31. > :00:33.security is stepped up in the student heartland of Woodhouse.

:00:33. > :00:43.Christa meets Rosemary Shrager as her new book on Yorkshire

:00:43. > :00:44.

:00:44. > :00:54.breakfasts brings home the bacon. A very windy weekend to come, with

:00:54. > :01:02.

:01:02. > :01:05.the possibility of severe gales. A Yorkshire MP is backing a

:01:05. > :01:08.campaign for people in some rural parts of Yorkshire to pay less tax

:01:08. > :01:11.when they fill up at the pump. Anne McIntosh, who represents Thirsk and

:01:11. > :01:18.Malton, says her constituents are being hit hardest by the high cost

:01:18. > :01:22.of petrol and diesel. She wants the Government to extend a scheme being

:01:22. > :01:26.trialled in remote parts of Scotland to be brought in here. I

:01:26. > :01:28.have been speaking to her, and we'll hear what she had to say in a

:01:28. > :01:34.few minutes, but first, our correspondent Alan Whitehouse has

:01:34. > :01:39.this report. Christmas bear coming off the

:01:39. > :01:44.production line. The extra sales are welcome, but there is a

:01:44. > :01:49.problem: More beer it means more transport costs. With food prices

:01:49. > :01:54.at a record high, the owner is caught in a vice. If the costs go

:01:54. > :02:02.up to me, then I will start shedding jobs here, and because our

:02:02. > :02:07.profits will be impacted. I cannot pass these costs on to Republicans.

:02:07. > :02:13.It might just push them over their edge, and we will see more pubs

:02:13. > :02:17.closing. -- publicans. With prices spiralling, the government has

:02:17. > :02:25.announced a trial fuel rebate. Campaigners say the same idea could

:02:25. > :02:31.be told in North Yorkshire. We are delighted that the rebate was

:02:31. > :02:36.announced for rural areas. We would support this on a trial basis, in

:02:36. > :02:42.other areas where it is essential to have a car when people cannot

:02:42. > :02:49.afford to pay the price. It is the same story a few miles up the road.

:02:49. > :02:53.Many people are buying less fuel, and its owner says he he runs a

:02:53. > :03:03.repair business and shop alongside the pumps. We have seen a decline

:03:03. > :03:03.

:03:03. > :03:07.in fuel sales in general, compared year-on-year. Not only are they are

:03:07. > :03:13.less amounts and the car, but they are filling up less frequently.

:03:13. > :03:16.People living in country areas, are spending 7 a month more than 10

:03:16. > :03:23.people in towns. People are spending seventies have an pounds a

:03:23. > :03:30.month here, for example. That compares with just under 27 a

:03:30. > :03:33.month if you have to live in the middle of London. Next week, the

:03:33. > :03:43.Chancellor is expected to say whether the three p rise is

:03:43. > :03:46.

:03:46. > :03:51.expected to be scrapped. -- 3p. Every one of your constituents was

:03:51. > :03:56.this is a great idea, but practically, can you make it work?

:03:56. > :04:02.Yes, I believe that now that the Scottish isles have had the green

:04:02. > :04:07.light, this is the right chance to ask the Chancellor to look good

:04:07. > :04:13.other rural isolated communities, like a specified area of North

:04:13. > :04:19.Yorkshire, for a limited period of time. We could have a rural rebate.

:04:20. > :04:26.This is having a massive impact on business. Are you saying this is

:04:26. > :04:36.absolutely essential, otherwise businesses will go? It is essential,

:04:36. > :04:37.

:04:37. > :04:41.apparently. A company has gone into administration. It is impacting on

:04:41. > :04:46.the very old and the very young, as they are completely dependent on

:04:46. > :04:50.their cars. It is also impacting on the ability of public services in

:04:50. > :04:58.North Yorkshire to be delivered. It cost more to deliver children to

:04:58. > :05:04.school, for the ambulance service, all aspects of police as well that

:05:04. > :05:07.to rely on petrol and diesel to get them around. The detract show --

:05:08. > :05:12.the detractors would say it is a lifestyle choice to live in the

:05:12. > :05:17.country and so forth. The other worry might be that people outside

:05:17. > :05:23.the area might try and come men and save money by filling up with

:05:23. > :05:30.petrol and diesel is cheaper. -- come in. The rural areas are the

:05:30. > :05:35.food basket of the country. We cannot all live in the city. It

:05:35. > :05:43.would be a defined geographic area, for a limited period of time, on

:05:43. > :05:48.the same basis as the Scilly Isles have been awarded. It wouldn't

:05:48. > :05:53.amount to... I hope I will get a fair hearing, and I think the

:05:53. > :06:03.Chancellor has proved that it shouldn't just be his chief

:06:03. > :06:04.

:06:04. > :06:09.secretary the benefits. -- that benefits.

:06:09. > :06:13.Lots of you have already got in touch. Someone said, why should

:06:13. > :06:18.people be entitled to a tax rebate because they choose to live away

:06:18. > :06:25.miles away? Someone else said, it is not the same as rural dwellers.

:06:25. > :06:30.Those in the City have a choice of transport. We do not. And someone

:06:30. > :06:37.else, why should rural residents get preferential treatment? It is

:06:37. > :06:46.their choice. Everyone should get a five penny discount. We will have

:06:46. > :06:53.more of your comments tonight. You can post any comments on our

:06:53. > :06:58.Facebook page, or send us an e-mail. Or you can tweet us. And you can

:06:58. > :07:01.follow us as well. Police in Leeds investigating a

:07:01. > :07:04.series of alleged robberies by masked men on Wednesday night have

:07:04. > :07:07.arrested six people. A number of people, including students, needed

:07:07. > :07:10.hospital treatment after the attacks. We first told you about

:07:10. > :07:14.what happened in Woodhouse in yesterday's programme. Scores of

:07:14. > :07:16.you got in touch with us after seeing Ian White's report. Today,

:07:17. > :07:26.Leeds University, police and local politicians met to discuss what

:07:27. > :07:29.

:07:29. > :07:33.happened. Ian has been out on patrol at the University today.

:07:33. > :07:40.Extra patrols on the streets in and around Leeds University followed

:07:40. > :07:48.this week's attacks on young people. Some victims were students. Adams

:08:11. > :08:12.

:08:12. > :08:17.the regular patrols. While we were filming, CCTV spotted an incident.

:08:17. > :08:23.The team were on hand to detain a man suspected of shoplifting on

:08:23. > :08:29.campus. He was then handed over to the police. There are cameras

:08:29. > :08:37.dotted all over this campers, and in fact, recently, the university

:08:37. > :08:45.invested seven which and 50,000 in this state of the art CCTV system.

:08:45. > :08:49.-- 750,000. Alan is a former military man who once had the

:08:49. > :08:54.responsibility for keeping the US embassy safe, and now his main

:08:54. > :08:59.concern is looking after a student and staff. I have had letters from

:08:59. > :09:04.parents asking about security arrangements. I am in the process

:09:04. > :09:08.of reply to them. I have also had letters from international students.

:09:08. > :09:13.My main task is to reassure those parents that their children are

:09:13. > :09:17.safe and looked after here, while they are at the University.

:09:17. > :09:26.investigations continue, worried students were being issued with

:09:26. > :09:33.panic alarms today. And they are being told to keep state and stay

:09:33. > :09:35.vigilant. -- keep safe. Stay with us, as I meet the Queen

:09:35. > :09:37.of Breakfasts. A local council in North Derbyshire

:09:37. > :09:47.has been criticised for financial and management incompetence. Find

:09:51. > :09:55.The Audit Commission says Bolsover Council was guilty of 14 serious

:09:55. > :09:58.errors in the way their financial affairs were being managed.

:09:58. > :10:02.The Yorkshire Building Society says it's creating more than 100 new

:10:02. > :10:08.jobs in Bradford. It already employs 1,500 people at its main

:10:08. > :10:10.offices in the city. To accommodate the additional 120 workers,

:10:10. > :10:12.Yorkshire Building Society is leasing additional office space. It

:10:12. > :10:15.recently merged with the Norwich and Peterborough Building Society

:10:15. > :10:18.and took over internet bank, Egg. A graffiti vandal who caused

:10:18. > :10:20.thousands of pounds of damage across the county has been jailed

:10:20. > :10:24.for three months. Joseph Binney targeted railway carriages and

:10:24. > :10:27.buildings in Leeds, Leeming Bar and Bentley. The 22-year-old is also

:10:27. > :10:37.serving a two-year sentence for violent disorder during a spending

:10:37. > :10:55.

:10:55. > :10:58.Small businesses in Whitby claim the closure of part of one of the

:10:58. > :11:01.town's piers has had a devastating effect on trade. Scores of anglers

:11:01. > :11:06.who usually fish off the west pier extension are going elsewhere,

:11:06. > :11:13.taking their spending power with them.

:11:13. > :11:18.For Jackie, the closure of Whitby's West Pier extension has been a

:11:18. > :11:26.disaster. Her angling shops in the town, here for 40 years, had been

:11:26. > :11:32.hit hard. It went from selling 20 of these a day to none. The phones

:11:32. > :11:39.started ringing, people asking if it was true. They cancelled their

:11:39. > :11:44.fishing trips. Now the phone never rings. The business has an online

:11:44. > :11:50.store which is expanding, but other businesses do not have that luxury.

:11:50. > :11:56.50 anglers a day have melted away from the town. They don't go to the

:11:56. > :12:00.newsagent or pub or eat out. They don't use the tackle shop.

:12:00. > :12:04.extension was closed because the old crossing is unsafe. A temporary

:12:04. > :12:11.one will be in place, and a permanent one will follow. But for

:12:11. > :12:15.this man, it takes -- he takes anglers out on his boat, and he

:12:15. > :12:20.cannot understand why it has taken the borough council so long to get

:12:20. > :12:30.that temporary clocked -- crossing in place. It is shocking it has

:12:30. > :12:34.taken so long. Three months? Crazy! It is bureaucracy, basically. But

:12:34. > :12:39.also making sure it is done properly. Work will start next week,

:12:40. > :12:48.and we are told it will be completed next week. There is one

:12:48. > :12:58.Anglo on the pier. Sadly, for the shop and boat, it is only this

:12:58. > :12:58.

:12:58. > :13:01.oversized metal sculpture. -- She's one of the fiercest women on

:13:01. > :13:05.television and makes me look like a pussy cat. Rosemary Shrager well

:13:05. > :13:09.known TV chef and star of Ladettes to Ladies has now made her home in

:13:09. > :13:12.North Yorkshire running a cookery school. She is used to serving the

:13:12. > :13:21.finest food to the highest in the land and all in a castle-like

:13:21. > :13:29.setting. So Christa arranged to meet in Mytholmroyd near Halifax.

:13:29. > :13:33.Today, more humble surroundings for a more humble meal. Good morning.

:13:33. > :13:40.Two full breakfasts. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day,

:13:41. > :13:47.it is the subject of her latest book. Thank you very much. That

:13:47. > :13:51.will set us up for the day. What is it about breakfast? There are two

:13:51. > :13:55.ways to look at it. It is very important to start off with

:13:56. > :14:01.something in the morning. It helps the children to go to school with

:14:01. > :14:05.porridge or toast or yoghurt or fruit. The old saying, eat like a

:14:05. > :14:11.king at breakfast, lunch like a prince and in the evening eat a

:14:11. > :14:16.pauper. That is the right way to do it. There is a quick breakfast of

:14:16. > :14:21.porridge or toast and yoghurt or fruit. Then there is a lovely

:14:21. > :14:25.breakfast on a Sunday or Saturday we have a big meal and spend a

:14:25. > :14:30.leisurely long time and go for a long walk and come back with a meal

:14:30. > :14:34.in the early-evening and make only two meals a day. The reason I did

:14:34. > :14:42.the book was because I love breakfast and I wanted something

:14:42. > :14:50.really simple, something simple. the baked beans, you say they cost

:14:50. > :14:54.peanuts. I am glad to said that. I have bought some with me. I want to

:14:54. > :15:00.tell you why. Baked beans, when you make them yourself, they are

:15:00. > :15:05.reasonable. They are really cheap and go a long way. I think it's a

:15:05. > :15:11.nutritious supper dish. Not only breakfast. If you have a large

:15:11. > :15:21.family, it's a great way to feed them. There they are. Fabulous.

:15:21. > :15:21.

:15:22. > :15:31.Fantastic. Homemade. Yes. Homemade. They are good. Frankie. They are,

:15:31. > :15:36.even I say so! Here are some I made earlier. Home-made baked beans.

:15:36. > :15:39.Very nice. Before seven o'clock: A look ahead to the weekend's sport

:15:39. > :15:49.including boxing and Sheffield's Ryan Rhodes getting back into the

:15:49. > :15:52.

:15:52. > :16:01.ring again - big time. Still to come, Bradford Cathedral meeting a

:16:01. > :16:04.For the sport now and next season's Super league fixtures were

:16:04. > :16:13.announced today and confirmation that magic weekend moves to

:16:13. > :16:21.Manchester. Tanya's here. Murrayfield, Millennium, maybe

:16:21. > :16:26.Manchester. I suggested Milan or Madrid. It has moved to the 26th,

:16:26. > :16:29.27th. The Leeds Rhinos will start the defence of their title at home

:16:29. > :16:33.on Friday the third of February against Hull KR. On the same night

:16:34. > :16:36.Wakefield will take on Super League new boys Widnes. On the Saturday

:16:36. > :16:39.Castleford are the first visitors at Salford's new stadium, while

:16:39. > :16:42.Bradford face Catalan on the Sunday with Huddersfield away at Wigan.

:16:42. > :16:44.It's a bumper weekend of local football. At Elland Road it's an

:16:44. > :16:47.all Yorkshire affair as Leeds United host Barnsley in the

:16:47. > :16:57.Championship. In League One Chesterfield entertain Sheffield

:16:57. > :17:02.

:17:02. > :17:07.United who have James Beattie back James Beattie is back. He was at

:17:07. > :17:13.Sheffield United today nearly three years after leaving the club. He

:17:13. > :17:20.says he was shocked when told he had been sold to Stoke City. Going

:17:20. > :17:24.for promotion, obviously it was out of my hands. It was a great

:17:24. > :17:29.opportunity. Are the same time, it was a decision that was not in my

:17:29. > :17:32.hands and I had to go with it. is working on fitness and will miss

:17:32. > :17:39.out when his team-mates play Chesterfield tomorrow. The Blades

:17:39. > :17:43.beat Carlisle and are in better form. Not being disrespectful but

:17:43. > :17:48.if you are conceding goals in not your confidence. We must force

:17:48. > :17:55.those goals and force them. Chesterfield are experiencing a

:17:55. > :18:01.slump. The manager's frustration is increased because the players are

:18:01. > :18:07.not at other clubs. There are different Reid, some footballers.

:18:07. > :18:15.Many like sitting around on a Saturday and that frustrates me.

:18:15. > :18:19.There is a derby at Elland Road is love. Barnsley he beat Doncaster or

:18:19. > :18:23.seemed more concerned than their rivals Leeds United who offer.

:18:23. > :18:26.There is no trepidation in Leeds playing football. It's what the

:18:26. > :18:36.players want even though they are young, sometimes it can help

:18:36. > :18:37.

:18:37. > :18:42.because there is no fear with young players. I am looking forward to it.

:18:42. > :18:51.We have come from behind on a few occasions, it is a habit we need to

:18:51. > :18:55.break. Two or three players and we are in a shout in the play-offs.

:18:55. > :19:04.tomorrow's game is anywhere near as good as last season's, it is worth

:19:04. > :19:07.a listen on the BBC. There are full More than 1,500 hundred boxing fans

:19:07. > :19:10.will fill the former steelworks, Magna, in Rotherham tomorrow night.

:19:10. > :19:13.At the top of the bill is the veteran fighter from Sheffield,

:19:13. > :19:17.Ryan Rhodes. He's looking for a winning return after losing a world

:19:17. > :19:19.title challenge in the summer. Also fighting is the former professional

:19:19. > :19:29.footballer Curtis Woodhouse, whose had a last minute change of

:19:29. > :19:33.

:19:33. > :19:43.opponent. Shamir Masris' report Two fighters on the comeback trail,

:19:43. > :19:46.

:19:46. > :19:48.Ryan roads looking for winning return against the Russian. Former

:19:48. > :19:53.Rotherham midfielder Curtis Woodhouse faces an even tougher

:19:53. > :19:58.test after his scheduled opponent pulled out this morning leaving him

:19:58. > :20:04.facing a Glasgow labourer, a respected boxer with a completely

:20:04. > :20:10.different style to what he has trained for. By the confident.

:20:10. > :20:19.you want the British champion, you must take on all-comers, big, small,

:20:19. > :20:25.fat, thin. It is not a problem. I'll fight anyone. The plan was to

:20:25. > :20:32.knock Jason Cook out. The plan is the same. It is the most I have

:20:32. > :20:38.ever sold for a show. It will put me in good stead for when I fight

:20:38. > :20:44.again. I did not want to come back with an easy fight, I want to be

:20:44. > :20:50.Test then this is perfect for me. I have to be fit and ready and sharp.

:20:50. > :20:54.I am all of that. Onlookers are not expected to see any one-sided bout.

:20:54. > :21:03.Something the promoter is keen to provide. We want entertaining

:21:03. > :21:07.fights. You do not know he will win every fight. You want a bit of

:21:07. > :21:12.intrigue. That's what people want to see. You want to support your

:21:12. > :21:16.man but to want a good fight. People will get that on Saturday.

:21:16. > :21:21.Should they both come through to my next challenge is, those should

:21:21. > :21:24.expect title fights in the new year. After a week of last minute

:21:24. > :21:28.fundraising Sheffield Paralympic hopeful Farrel Anthony has just 24

:21:28. > :21:33.hours to keep his Olympic dream alive. Today he was playing all

:21:33. > :21:35.comers at the City's Winter Gardens including the leader of the council.

:21:35. > :21:45.This week he's raised about 1,200, but needs another thirteen hundred

:21:45. > :21:49.to get himself to the Korean and Argentinian Opens. If I get the

:21:49. > :21:54.required amount I can compete for the points necessary to qualify for

:21:54. > :21:59.London 2012. At the moment I am around 22 in the world and I need

:21:59. > :22:03.to be either 15 or 16 to have a chance of qualifying. If I don't go

:22:03. > :22:11.to the tournaments I cannot get the points. If I don't get the points,

:22:11. > :22:18.no 2012. We wish him luck. I have never done a sports bulletin with

:22:18. > :22:28.you eating beans. The boxing piece. Did you see one

:22:28. > :22:32.of the boxers have socks on. Ryan roads had his name on his stomach.

:22:32. > :22:35.It was the socks that threw me and put me off my beans.

:22:35. > :22:38.Now have you ever fancied having a go at the ancient art of bell

:22:38. > :22:41.ringing? Yes? Well, now you can. Bradford Cathedral needs new

:22:41. > :22:47.recruits so this Sunday they're giving anybody who fancies it the

:22:47. > :22:52.chance to have a bash. Anybody? We thought Danny Carpenter might find

:22:53. > :22:58.it appealing. It is as English as Earl Grey and

:22:58. > :23:03.teacakes. Allocation is not an occasion unless there is a bells on

:23:03. > :23:08.it. In Bradford, they have quite a few special occasions coming up,

:23:08. > :23:18.the city's centenary, Diamond Jubilee, Olympic torch. But there

:23:18. > :23:22.

:23:22. > :23:28.is a problem. There are 12 bells but only three ringers. And me. How

:23:28. > :23:33.do you do a big wedding? I have to talk to the ring is in the other

:23:33. > :23:39.churches around and see if they are not busy on a wedding can they can
