:00:17. > :00:22.On the programme tonight. Tributes pour in for Gary Speed.

:00:22. > :00:26.Fans and former team makes pay their respects to the ex Leeds and

:00:27. > :00:32.Sheffield United player found dead in his home yesterday.

:00:32. > :00:37.He was expect -- respected by every football player. That tells us

:00:37. > :00:45.something about the bloke. Also tonight, a big boost to the

:00:45. > :00:48.region's economy. A big boost to Trans Pennine chains promises a big

:00:48. > :00:52.boost. And we go behind the scenes of a

:00:52. > :00:57.new drama about a Yorkshire supermarket syndicate that wins the

:00:57. > :01:07.lottery. It has been fairly cloudy today. We

:01:07. > :01:15.

:01:15. > :01:19.are settled -- set for a unsettled The family of Gary Speed says they

:01:19. > :01:24.are overwhelmed by messages of support and condolence they have

:01:24. > :01:28.received. The former player and Sheffield United manager was found

:01:28. > :01:32.dead at his home yesterday morning. He was just 42 years old.

:01:32. > :01:35.An inquest into the cause of his death took will open tomorrow.

:01:35. > :01:45.Today at stadiums around the country, France had been playing

:01:45. > :01:47.

:01:47. > :01:52.tribute. In a moment, up report live from his last club. -- fans.

:01:52. > :01:57.As you can see here, the tributes are continuing to pour in. There is

:01:57. > :02:02.a palpable sense of shock. If you look at these tributes there is a

:02:02. > :02:08.common theme. They talk about a legend. Some of the fancier are

:02:08. > :02:13.talking about it a man who always had time up for up them. -- fans.

:02:13. > :02:17.He went on to play for Everton and Newcastle, but it was at Leeds

:02:17. > :02:24.United that Gary Speed made his name.

:02:24. > :02:32.24 hours on and there is still a sense of bewilderment. He was one

:02:32. > :02:37.of the most respected and well- liked men in the game. He is a

:02:37. > :02:45.football at that nobody has a bad word to say about. That is pretty

:02:45. > :02:50.remarkable. We would like to pay tribute to his life in general.

:02:50. > :03:00.is a shock. I have just come down to pay my respects. I have left a

:03:00. > :03:01.

:03:01. > :03:10.shirt down there. He was a legend. It was at Leeds that he started his

:03:10. > :03:16.career as part of the midfielder strikers. They won the championship

:03:16. > :03:21.in 1992. I trained beside him for six years and I was proud of Gary

:03:21. > :03:26.Speed. Every time I saw him, I was proud of him. He was like a father

:03:26. > :03:35.figure. I kept saying to people, he was not the most talented when I

:03:35. > :03:42.first met him but he trained. think it would help. On Saturday

:03:42. > :03:50.afternoon, he appeared on Football Focus. There were no signs that he

:03:50. > :03:58.was troubled. The manner of his death has rocked everyone. I was

:03:58. > :04:03.shocked and numb. It was something I never expected. 24 hours on, it

:04:03. > :04:10.has still not sunk in. He keeps seeing things on telly which remind

:04:10. > :04:15.you. Think, this cannot happen to someone so young. You cannot

:04:15. > :04:18.comprehend it. He made 312 appearances for Leeds. The club

:04:18. > :04:24.says there will be one-minute silence ahead of their game on

:04:24. > :04:28.Saturday. It may have been here that Gary Speed started his playing

:04:28. > :04:38.career, but it was down at Sheffield United that he finished

:04:38. > :04:44.

:04:44. > :04:50.Like you say, Gary Speed's history here has been much more recent.

:04:50. > :04:54.Just this time last year he was still manager. This place has

:04:54. > :04:59.become a shrine to him today. People are still turning up to pay

:04:59. > :05:09.their respects. Today it has not just been Sheffield United fans.

:05:09. > :05:10.

:05:10. > :05:14.Other fans have been you to pay their respects. -- been here.

:05:14. > :05:20.Gary Speed spent three years at Sheffield United as a player, coach

:05:20. > :05:24.and finally manager. That has plenty of time to get to know him.

:05:24. > :05:33.I feel so sad about what has happened. I cannot get my head

:05:33. > :05:38.round it. I have come to pay my respects to a great man. He is an

:05:38. > :05:42.inspiration. I cried all day yesterday and I am not a -- not

:05:42. > :05:47.ashamed to admit that. It does not make any sense and it is

:05:47. > :05:54.heartbreaking. Gary Speed joined Sheffield United at the beginning

:05:54. > :05:58.of 2008 and after retiring became a coach. He was a top-class player

:05:58. > :06:03.and he wanted to learn from the bottom up when he became a coach.

:06:03. > :06:08.He was like that in his football even though he was 38 and still

:06:08. > :06:12.playing, he prepared as though it was the first game of his career.

:06:12. > :06:19.Starting last season, he had a brief spell of manager himself

:06:20. > :06:26.before leaving to become the proud manager of his nation Wales. I only

:06:27. > :06:33.spoke to him last week. The worst part about it is that actually, for

:06:33. > :06:39.a hen to feel how he felt before what he done. To be in that sort of

:06:39. > :06:45.state of mind. That is the most upsetting bit. Trying to work that

:06:45. > :06:50.out. Gary Speed marched on together with Leeds United fans and lit up

:06:50. > :06:59.the senses. He started and ended his playing career in Yorkshire,

:06:59. > :07:04.and here he is too short life will be long remembered.

:07:04. > :07:10.Two clubs with very fond memories of Gary Speed. Let us introduce you

:07:10. > :07:14.now to a lifelong friend and agent. I know you have come to the studio

:07:14. > :07:19.tonight having spent the day with Gary's wife and his two sons and

:07:19. > :07:28.also his mum and dad, because they have genuinely been overwhelmed at

:07:28. > :07:34.the support here in the Yorkshire. Yes., particularly his father. He

:07:34. > :07:38.felt that something should be said by way of thanks to the Leeds fans

:07:38. > :07:45.and of course to the Sheffield United fans. They have genuinely

:07:45. > :07:50.been overwhelmed and I can honestly say it is making a small difference.

:07:51. > :07:57.They are reading the tributes. Most of them get through to them in one

:07:57. > :08:02.format or another. They have asked me to come here and expressed deep

:08:02. > :08:06.fact -- deep thanks. I pulled the car over yesterday. I cannot

:08:06. > :08:12.imagine how it must be for someone like you. I could not believe what

:08:12. > :08:15.I was hearing. That sense of disbelief has continue today. Grown

:08:15. > :08:22.men playing their scarves for the beloved football clubs and

:08:22. > :08:29.remembering a good guy. That is the main thing. At the moment, our

:08:29. > :08:36.industry is played with difficulties in one way or another,

:08:36. > :08:40.it is a cliche but Gary was a true role model. -- played. Looking at

:08:40. > :08:44.the tributes, any farther with young children wanting to play

:08:44. > :08:52.football, they should look at Gary's career as opposed to some of

:08:52. > :08:57.the more questionable icons of today. The one thing those tributes,

:08:57. > :09:03.those fans will have in common, is that they will have an autograph

:09:03. > :09:10.because Gary loved his fans. Some of my bond is memories are watching

:09:10. > :09:15.Leeds in Europe when he insisted on being with the fans as opposed to

:09:15. > :09:22.enjoying hospitality. Although Gary loved playing football, one of his

:09:22. > :09:26.regrets was not to be able to stand on the terraces watching football.

:09:26. > :09:31.This is a tragedy. We cannot even begin to ask the sort of questions

:09:31. > :09:38.that will be asked in the future. I know you spoke to someone tonight

:09:38. > :09:42.to is a good friend and wanted to send his tribute. Yes. David Batty

:09:42. > :09:49.is distraught. Most people know that he is a quiet chap and does

:09:49. > :09:56.not take much publicity. But he has made a point of suggesting that if

:09:56. > :10:00.I were to come on television, as a result of Roger's request, he would

:10:00. > :10:05.like the fans to know that his thoughts are with them as much as

:10:05. > :10:12.with Gary Speed's family. Can you please send our thoughts to the

:10:12. > :10:16.family? It is good that David Batty has had a chance to make a tribute.

:10:16. > :10:21.We were hear some tributes now. There have literally been thousands

:10:21. > :10:25.of them pouring in. Many of them from footballing names that are

:10:25. > :10:35.famous the world over. Former Wales team-mate Ryan Giggs

:10:35. > :10:35.

:10:35. > :11:22.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 46 seconds

:11:22. > :11:26.But as we have heard from his friend, the most important thing to

:11:26. > :11:30.the family are the attributes that are you his fans had been paying.

:11:30. > :11:33.Coming up later in this programme, at the biggest strike in a

:11:34. > :11:37.generation. More than 900 schools set to close

:11:37. > :11:43.in our region. We assess the impact of Wednesday's

:11:43. > :11:48.walkout by teachers. The Government has announced plans

:11:48. > :11:54.to overhaul the main cross Pennine realigned and it could create

:11:54. > :11:57.30,000 jobs and pump 4 billion into the region's economy.

:11:57. > :12:01.Yorkshire's business leaders have today welcomed the announcement

:12:01. > :12:04.that the line between York, Leeds and Manchester is set to be

:12:04. > :12:08.electrified. Here is our correspondent.

:12:08. > :12:13.It has come out of the blue. Passengers on the main Trans

:12:13. > :12:17.Pennine mind already write in a fleet of new diesel carriages. The

:12:17. > :12:21.Government says it now was to make the switch to electric power. It

:12:21. > :12:26.will mean faster journeys for thousands of commuters. Passengers

:12:26. > :12:31.in York were giving up the idea thumbs-up. Be a travelling today

:12:31. > :12:37.for a day out so that would have helped us in a big way. You can get

:12:37. > :12:40.to work a bit quicker and hopefully have more of trains. At the moment,

:12:40. > :12:46.you deal with a lot of delays and if it means getting somewhere

:12:46. > :12:53.quicker it would be a lot better. Network Rail has had plans for the

:12:53. > :12:58.-- for years to upgrade the entire line. This scheme will trip -- cut

:12:58. > :13:02.the trip from Leeds to Manchester bite 40 minutes. Much faster than

:13:02. > :13:07.driving. The trains will be longer and there will be a better chance

:13:07. > :13:12.of getting a seat. The plan will help kick-start the region's

:13:12. > :13:17.economy, creating jobs and spending power. You bring firms closer to

:13:17. > :13:22.market, closer to each other, and give them a bigger labour pool. It

:13:22. > :13:27.is that kind of cluttering which actually grows cities. This is no

:13:27. > :13:32.quick fix for the region. It is good news. It is part of a brother

:13:32. > :13:39.up -- broader package but we need the rest of their package as well

:13:39. > :13:45.to bring short-term, mid- term and long term benefits. Work on the

:13:45. > :13:51.project could begin as soon as next year, but it is looking likely that

:13:51. > :13:55.today's trains will be replaced by a second-hand trains. They will

:13:55. > :14:01.come from London commuting trains. This product is not about making

:14:01. > :14:07.life easier for up rail commuters. It is due to a last-ditch

:14:07. > :14:16.Government attempt to prevent the economy sliding into a downturn. A

:14:16. > :14:20.lead to find this line is part of a Evan Davis is the economics editor

:14:20. > :14:26.with the BBC and also the host of Dragon's Den, which helps small

:14:26. > :14:30.businesses. This is infrastructure project going to make any

:14:30. > :14:34.difference to businesses, getting their Cregagh but also benefiting

:14:34. > :14:39.from the fall-out from the investment? -- getting there

:14:39. > :14:46.quicker. These things work in two ways. Firstly, in the short term,

:14:46. > :14:51.up grading, but employs people and kick-starts the economy. In the

:14:51. > :14:55.long term you get the supply side effect. Even when the workers are

:14:55. > :15:00.all laid off and move on to the next thing, you have a faster train

:15:00. > :15:05.which makes it easier for companies to expand capacity and get the job

:15:06. > :15:10.done more quickly. That is the more important of the effects, it makes

:15:10. > :15:15.the region and companies more competitive. That is a slow-burn

:15:15. > :15:20.effect. How long will it be before companies can save, we are more

:15:20. > :15:25.competitive than we used to be. -- can say. A Cregagh effect might

:15:25. > :15:31.come to small businesses. We have heard about the loan guarantees

:15:31. > :15:34.seemed -- scheme. A lot of people have left -- lost out because we

:15:34. > :15:41.have been dependent on the public sector. Will it work and will

:15:41. > :15:44.businesses to develop? There are a number of schemes that the

:15:44. > :15:51.government are looking at and they are complicated pieces of financial

:15:51. > :15:57.engineering. There is a need for finance appear. There was a survey

:15:57. > :16:00.in the Yorkshire Post today, 36% of companies would consider getting

:16:00. > :16:07.money from the high street banks because they do not think they

:16:07. > :16:11.would get it. It is a sad indictment. The banks say that no

:16:11. > :16:15.one comes to them wanting a loan, because they have been put off

:16:16. > :16:19.before it even tried. Part of it is getting banks to lend but part of

:16:19. > :16:24.it is getting the message to small businesses that the banks are

:16:24. > :16:31.lending, so you can borrow money, expand, have some apprentices, all

:16:31. > :16:38.that kind of thing. Particularly as the public sector contracts, the

:16:38. > :16:41.private sector must pick up the slack. And I am presenting -- you

:16:41. > :16:46.are presenting my cadet -- to date programme from here tomorrow.

:16:46. > :16:50.It has been described as the biggest strike in a generation. 900

:16:51. > :16:55.schools across Yorkshire will be closed a party closed on Wednesday.

:16:55. > :17:05.The worst-hit area is expected to be Barnsley, for 97% of schools

:17:05. > :17:05.

:17:05. > :17:13.will be shot. Thousands of teachers will take part in the Walker Art.

:17:13. > :17:17.-- the walk out. Teachers were on strike in June but Wednesday's

:17:17. > :17:21.walkout will be bigger because this time, head teachers are taking part

:17:22. > :17:27.as well and that makes it harder for schools to open. The majority

:17:27. > :17:33.will be closed or partially closed. It shows you that really, whatever

:17:33. > :17:37.level you are in education, these cuts and these increases in

:17:37. > :17:41.contributions are affecting everyone. Christine is a teacher in

:17:41. > :17:46.north Leeds he will strike on Wednesday. She says if the new

:17:46. > :17:49.pension arrangements go ahead, staff will have to work longer.

:17:49. > :17:53.Striking is a difficult decision for a teacher because we are here

:17:53. > :17:58.for the benefit of the children. I want to support my younger

:17:58. > :18:02.colleagues, he will have to work in the classroom until they are 68. I

:18:02. > :18:08.think that is unreasonable. In terms of the teacher pension scheme,

:18:08. > :18:14.there have been two recent Oddy -- audits which have said it is

:18:14. > :18:18.sustainable. We are not a burden on the tax payer. There are no lessons

:18:18. > :18:24.on Wednesday. Inconvenient for parents, but the majority we spoke

:18:24. > :18:31.to seemed to be backing teachers. am disappointed that the school

:18:31. > :18:37.will be closed but I support the teachers. They work extremely hard.

:18:37. > :18:47.It is our greatest living people have to work until 68. A dash out

:18:47. > :18:53.rages that people. A lot of people will have to arrange childcare.

:18:53. > :19:00.Most teachers will show their feelings on Wednesday when they are

:19:00. > :19:04.expected to walk out in vast numbers.

:19:04. > :19:08.In the last few minutes the Ministry of Defence has said a

:19:08. > :19:14.soldier killed in Afghanistan yesterday it was from Leeds. Our

:19:14. > :19:17.reporter joins us from the newsroom. It is only in the last 20 minutes

:19:17. > :19:27.but the Ministry of Defence has confirmed the latest soldier killed

:19:27. > :19:28.

:19:28. > :19:33.in Afghanistan is Sheldon's do from Leeds. He was on patrol when he was

:19:33. > :19:38.caught up in an explosion. He was airlifted to the field hospital at

:19:38. > :19:44.Camp Bastion but declared killed in action. His family have paid this

:19:44. > :19:48.tribute to him. They say Sheldon was loving, caring and affectionate.

:19:48. > :19:54.He loved being in the army. He was a big lad with a big heart and

:19:54. > :19:58.words cannot express how much she will be missed. -- he will.

:19:58. > :20:03.A man has been jailed for a minimum of 16 years for what a court heard

:20:03. > :20:10.was the savage and sent us murder of his friend in Scarborough.

:20:10. > :20:17.Former landscape gardener, Gary VIA, who was 48, was found dead. He had

:20:17. > :20:21.been attacked by John Stanford. Police said they may never know why.

:20:21. > :20:25.A 75-year-old woman has been attacked by another woman in the

:20:25. > :20:29.Leyburn area of North Yorkshire. She was hit on the head four times

:20:29. > :20:32.before her handbag was stolen. Police are asking for help to trace

:20:32. > :20:41.the suspect he is believed to be in for 40s.

:20:41. > :20:49.Coming up... And a supermarket syndicate wins

:20:49. > :20:55.the lottery in Kay Mellor's latest TV drama.

:20:55. > :20:59.I do not think that was your fault! They were not supermarket workers.

:20:59. > :21:04.We have something about a school and a good drama.

:21:04. > :21:12.Why do we talk about sport? -- why don't we.

:21:12. > :21:22.How do Spade Town face a big match this season when they face trodden.

:21:22. > :21:32.

:21:32. > :21:38.There was a battle for Yorkshire pride at Elland Road. The

:21:39. > :21:43.celebration was definitely a mistake but one they were happy to

:21:43. > :21:48.repeat when they netted a second. A cracking free-kick got Leeds back

:21:48. > :21:58.in the game but that is all they got thanks to looks do's heroics.

:21:58. > :22:04.

:22:04. > :22:08.Sheffield Wednesday made it eight home wins in nine starts. Not quite

:22:08. > :22:13.how they practise dead but good enough to beat Leyton Orient and

:22:13. > :22:17.are now second in the table. -- practised it.

:22:17. > :22:25.Sheffield United could have been home in time for Strictly Come

:22:25. > :22:34.Dancing! Bradford are deep in trouble in a

:22:34. > :22:40.leak to. A draw at Gillingham still has to be considered a point gained.

:22:40. > :22:43.It is the party season so time for an off-the-shoulder number. Brett

:22:43. > :22:53.Williams' finish was ruled out because he opened the scoring in

:22:53. > :22:54.

:22:54. > :23:00.the 20th minute. It is not your day when a complete mess becomes an

:23:00. > :23:05.when a complete mess becomes an assessed. -- assist.

:23:05. > :23:10.Three of Yorkshire's stadiums are to us -- hole matches in the Rugby

:23:10. > :23:16.World Cup in 2015. Games will be played at the Shay in Halifax, by

:23:16. > :23:20.Galpharm and Headingley in Leeds. She has ridden for some of the

:23:20. > :23:24.biggest names in television. Her stories for Coronation Street and

:23:24. > :23:30.Brookside and her drama, Band of Gold, have been watched by tens of

:23:30. > :23:34.millions of people. Now, Kay Mellor is working in her home city. She

:23:34. > :23:41.tells the tale of a group of supermarket workers whose lives are

:23:41. > :23:46.completely changed when they win the lottery.

:23:46. > :23:53.Making a big drama in Leeds. Glamorous, it is not. It is a cold,

:23:53. > :24:02.cavernous warehouse where the BBC's latest Kay Mellor production is in

:24:02. > :24:06.big swing. -- is in swing. It is absolutely freezing! I have a

:24:06. > :24:13.thermal vest and long johns. I was wearing tights the other day and I

:24:13. > :24:17.usually wear two pairs of socks. That is where the heater is and I

:24:17. > :24:27.will go there with a cup of tea. Kay Mellor has got some well-known

:24:27. > :24:29.

:24:29. > :24:39.faces. We took Matthews are playing Lottery winning brothers. -- two

:24:39. > :24:41.

:24:41. > :24:50.Matthews. He gets to drive a Ferrari! I get a Volkswagen Golf. I

:24:50. > :24:54.get a decent house. Kay Mellor is Yorkshire's best-known screen

:24:54. > :25:02.writer. She writes about what she knows best from comedy to period

:25:02. > :25:07.pieces. This is a story for modern times. As life and society changes,

:25:07. > :25:10.different ideas come from that. You know, what about the times we are

:25:10. > :25:18.living in right now? How many people have said to me recently,
