:00:14. > :00:24.respects to Private Matthew Thornton, the TA soldier killed in
:00:24. > :00:26.
:00:26. > :00:28.Afghanistan. He will be sorely missed by everyone. He was a
:00:28. > :00:31.wonderful guy. Harry Ramsdens, the world's most
:00:31. > :00:39.famous fish and chip shop, announces it is to close its
:00:39. > :00:42.original branch And will be getting have reaction of from Companies Act

:00:54. > :01:04.Yet infrastructure announced today. This Gaia was looking bright before
:01:04. > :01:09.
:01:09. > :01:12.Good evening postop Hundreds of people lined the
:01:12. > :01:15.streets of Darton near Barnsley today for the funeral of volunteer
:01:15. > :01:21.soldier Matthew Thornton. The 28- year-old was killed in an explosion
:01:21. > :01:24.in Afghanistan at the start of the month. As Matthew's funeral was
:01:24. > :01:27.taking place, in a different part of Yorkshire, people were taking in
:01:27. > :01:37.the news another young soldier has been killed out there. Ian White
:01:37. > :01:39.
:01:39. > :01:43.From schoolchildren to war veterans, dignitaries and the local MP, the
:01:43. > :01:48.people of Darton came out in their hundreds to say goodbye to Private
:01:48. > :01:52.Matthew Thornton. Traffic stood still as his coffin was brought to
:01:52. > :01:57.All Saints Church. The mourners were led by his appearance Michael
:01:57. > :02:03.and Susan. He was an easy man to get to know, partly because of his
:02:03. > :02:12.physical stature, and is enormous and belt buckle of which he was
:02:12. > :02:18.rightly proud. But mainly because he was a man of real character.
:02:18. > :02:24.Matthew had been serving in Afghanistan as a Territorial Army
:02:24. > :02:31.soldier. He was killed are just a few days after his 28 per day when
:02:31. > :02:40.he was caught in a roadside explosion in Helmand province. -- a
:02:40. > :02:46.28th of birthday. Everyone is sad, he will be sorely missed. He was a
:02:46. > :02:52.wonderful guy and there will be avoided in the company is now.
:02:52. > :02:57.Friends as well of of fun loving a man who lived life to the full.
:02:57. > :03:03.knew how to party. There were not many out weekends when he did not
:03:03. > :03:13.come out of us in town. Matthew's fun personality was reflected in
:03:13. > :03:14.
:03:14. > :03:19.charge than one of his favourite pieces of music was played. The
:03:19. > :03:25.congregations clapped along inside. They say they look out for their
:03:25. > :03:31.own in Darton, that was evident today. As well as great sadness,
:03:31. > :03:41.there is also great pride. It has affected everybody, you can say
:03:41. > :03:43.
:03:43. > :03:48.that. It makes you think that it can happen every over. It brings it
:03:48. > :03:51.home. As his body was taken away for a private the rail service, a
:03:51. > :03:56.different Yorkshire committee was taking in the news that another
:03:56. > :04:01.young life had been lost. Rifleman Sheldon Steel was killed in
:04:01. > :04:09.Afghanistan on Sunday. His neighbours paid this tribute to him.
:04:09. > :04:19.He was a genuinely nice lad. They do not get enough police forehead.
:04:19. > :04:21.
:04:21. > :04:23.-- enough praise for it. Our condolences to the families of
:04:23. > :04:27.both men - Private Matthew Thornton and Rifleman Sheldon Steel.
:04:27. > :04:29.Next tonight. The most famous fish and chip shop in the world is to
:04:29. > :04:35.close. Harry Ramsden started his business in Guiseley near Leeds in
:04:35. > :04:38.the 1920s. It has since become an international brand. Today, just as
:04:38. > :04:42.the Chancellor was unveiling his plan to help the economy, staff
:04:42. > :04:44.were told it has become another victim of the downturn. We'll have
:04:44. > :04:52.more on what George Osborne's statement will mean for Yorkshire
:04:52. > :04:56.in a moment. First, Len Tingle reports from Guiseley.
:04:56. > :05:02.Harry Ramsden's in Guiseley, I Yorkshire Institution,
:05:02. > :05:12.internationally famous. But tonight, another casualty of tough times.
:05:12. > :05:12.
:05:12. > :05:17.Tragic, Beauly. It will be a shame. Assume for the economy as well.
:05:17. > :05:23.Harry Ramsden opened his first fish and chip shop here in 1928 in a
:05:23. > :05:27.wooden hut. He targeted at working- class day-trippers, then coach
:05:27. > :05:36.parties began to come. It later became it the largest fish and chip
:05:36. > :05:39.shop in the world. But let that history, the most of them is a
:05:39. > :05:45.fish-and-chip restaurant in the world has survived numerous
:05:45. > :05:54.recessions, competition, but the slowdown of 2011 has proved too
:05:54. > :06:03.much. This site is making a loss. There has always been a sense of
:06:03. > :06:10.history here. Staff still wear 1930s style uniforms. In baby the
:06:10. > :06:16.19... I last reported here in the 1990s as the company expanded into
:06:16. > :06:22.Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia. The stress that today's used only
:06:22. > :06:29.affects Guiseley. The brand is strong throughout. But do be able
:06:29. > :06:36.to survive long term, we need to make tough decision. Guiseley does
:06:36. > :06:46.not look as if it has a commercial future. 24 jobs will go here, but
:06:46. > :06:49.
:06:49. > :06:51.so will really 100 years of Tonight's news about Harry
:06:51. > :06:54.Ramsden's comes two weeks after we reported that Yorkshire had the
:06:54. > :06:57.fastest growing unemployment rate in Britain. Today, the Chancellor
:06:57. > :07:02.promised action to try to help. Among the measures in his autumn
:07:02. > :07:05.statement: The M1 will be widened in West Yorkshire. New railway
:07:05. > :07:10.stations will be built in Apperley Bridge and Kirkstall, and Sheffield
:07:10. > :07:13.will get more trams. As we told you yesterday, train times from Leeds
:07:13. > :07:17.to Manchester will be cut. And there will be more tax breaks for
:07:17. > :07:27.businesses in the South Yorkshire Enterprise Zone.
:07:27. > :07:29.
:07:29. > :07:32.Nik's at one such business now. Nik. I am a packaging company on the
:07:32. > :07:41.outskirts of Sheffield. They have been working with great interest
:07:41. > :07:45.the Chancellor's statement today. Quite a few new announcements about
:07:45. > :07:55.infrastructure projects are right across Yorkshire today.
:07:55. > :07:58.
:07:59. > :08:02.The Chancellor - - The Chancellor can't do much about
:08:02. > :08:05.the weather, but he can help drivers by widening the M1 to cut
:08:05. > :08:07.congestion and speed up journeys. And that's exactly what he promised
:08:07. > :08:09.today, bringing forward an upgrade project that'll transform one of
:08:09. > :08:13.Yorkshire's key arteries. It does not speak their traffic, but it
:08:13. > :08:16.means the road is more reliable. There is less stop-start traffic.
:08:16. > :08:19.Managed Motorways use the hard shoulder as an extra traffic lane.
:08:19. > :08:21.There are refuges every few hundred yards in case of breakdowns.
:08:21. > :08:24.Overhead gantries can set legally binding speed limits and instant
:08:24. > :08:27.lane closures. They're linked to sensors in the road so officials at
:08:27. > :08:35.regional control centres, like the one at Wakefield, can instantly
:08:35. > :08:37.take control if congestion builds up or there's an incident. 10 years
:08:37. > :08:40.ago Sheffield's Supertram network was seen as a white elephant
:08:40. > :08:43.because it was carrying so few passengers. Now it's a roaring
:08:43. > :08:46.success and will get more trams to ease overcrowding. The Chancellor
:08:46. > :08:48.also announced that two new railway stations will be built between
:08:48. > :08:55.Leeds and Bradford. They'll be at Kirkstall Forge and Apperley Bridge
:08:55. > :08:59.and should cut congestion on local roads. There's a common thread
:08:59. > :09:03.linking all these announcement. The Chancellor is desperate to get
:09:03. > :09:13.Britain back to work, cutting unemployment figures and boosting
:09:13. > :09:23.
:09:23. > :09:29.tax figures. Can Chesham will be cut. -- the congestion. Joining me
:09:29. > :09:36.here is a businessman myself. You are chairman of that small business
:09:36. > :09:40.federation in South Yorkshire. Infrastructure projects, your
:09:40. > :09:49.immediate have reaction? It could be very good for the local area as
:09:49. > :09:59.long as local people and local businesses have the chance to go on
:09:59. > :10:00.
:10:00. > :10:05.it. But it is good for the rest of Yorkshire? Sheffield would benefit
:10:05. > :10:09.in some way? Absolutely. There are certain things happening at the
:10:09. > :10:15.moment that we are very pleased about. We think that everything
:10:15. > :10:24.else will be coming along. It is a very difficult time, very difficult
:10:24. > :10:34.for business. Stay with us. We will come back here in a minute. I have
:10:34. > :10:42.
:10:42. > :10:48.been gauging business -- reaction With lasting investment it...
:10:48. > :10:54.Workers and management watching the Chancellor's statement. The company
:10:54. > :11:02.is situated inside the Enterprise zone that will benefit from that
:11:02. > :11:06.tax breaks. They have been debating whether to buy a new machinery to
:11:06. > :11:13.help an expansion. Meanwhile, the new national long guarantee scheme
:11:13. > :11:18.which aims to free up more back loans for small businesses could
:11:18. > :11:26.help Richard Osborne and his small Sheffield-based company which
:11:26. > :11:30.builds climbing walls of for schools and colleges. But -- I
:11:30. > :11:39.think the government needs to do more to help and target small
:11:39. > :11:44.businesses. Richard would also welcome help to employ more people.
:11:44. > :11:49.The only be that a small business can go is by bringing in more
:11:49. > :11:57.people to increase the capacity of the business. At the moment, that
:11:57. > :12:01.is a stumbling block for a lot of businesses. But companies here are
:12:01. > :12:10.not sure whether the government is right when they claimed we are not
:12:10. > :12:14.heading for a double dip recession. The jury is out on that issue.
:12:14. > :12:17.I also have the managing director here. I notice you interest level
:12:17. > :12:23.go up when we talk about the Sheffield Enterprise zone getting
:12:24. > :12:28.special help. This will mean you can offset the cost of capital
:12:28. > :12:38.investment in the first year. capital relief is a huge advantage
:12:38. > :12:39.
:12:39. > :12:42.in company expenditure. It would persuade me if I knew scheme...
:12:42. > :12:48.would allow you to buy new equipment, and encourage you to
:12:48. > :12:53.take on more employees? If I buy another machine, I need another
:12:53. > :12:59.operative. As far as this loan guarantee scheme is concerned, on
:12:59. > :13:05.the surface, it sounds very good, making money it flawed through from
:13:05. > :13:11.the banks to small businesses, but you have some reservations? Yes,
:13:11. > :13:16.banks are not getting the competition. They are not passing
:13:16. > :13:20.things are through at the moment. It does worry me that the banks are
:13:20. > :13:26.going to be leading this. I think it should be spread around
:13:26. > :13:36.enterprises. What about that C-diff fund to encourage new businesses? -
:13:36. > :13:38.
:13:38. > :13:42.- are seed fund. Absolutely, a seed fund is vital to getting your
:13:42. > :13:48.business is going. There is a lot of things about the Government is
:13:48. > :13:54.doing that I agree with. I think it is a step in the right direction.
:13:54. > :13:58.Health and safety and employment law is quite important to you.
:13:58. > :14:02.huge amount of time is spent looking after staff and the welfare,
:14:02. > :14:06.the Government is talking about reducing that legislation by about
:14:06. > :14:16.a third over the course of the next year. Any less administration is
:14:16. > :14:23.
:14:23. > :14:26.Well, the Chancellor's Autumn Statement has raised lots of
:14:26. > :14:36.questions. And to answer some of those, we're joined now by the
:14:36. > :14:42.BBC's financial expert Paul Lewis. It strikes me that a lot of people,
:14:42. > :14:52.born around 1960, but not get their pensions too later? Yes, there will
:14:52. > :14:56.
:14:56. > :15:02.be a big rise in the state pension age. It does not affect anyone who
:15:02. > :15:08.is less than about, who is more than about 51 at the moment. If you
:15:08. > :15:14.were born in April 1960, or later, you will find your state pension
:15:14. > :15:24.age is not 66, but 67. That will be quite a blow for that group of
:15:24. > :15:25.
:15:25. > :15:35.people. We know there are massive strikes for tomorrow, how were the
:15:35. > :15:41.
:15:41. > :15:46.Chancellor's plants -- plans go down? public sector pay cuts are
:15:46. > :15:51.only going to be 1%. Contributions into the pensions will start rising
:15:51. > :15:55.from April. Those contributions will go up, but they will be frozen
:15:55. > :16:00.and then will go up slowly. They will be taking or less because of
:16:00. > :16:06.that. I think it is going to make a difference to took tomorrow's
:16:06. > :16:14.strike. I think people will be annoyed about it. Those are outside
:16:14. > :16:17.the public sector are not that sympathetic.
:16:17. > :16:20.He has asked pay review bodies to be more responsive to local labour
:16:21. > :16:27.markets. How do you interpret this? Will people in the north be paid
:16:27. > :16:31.less? I do not think so. There are national pay scales for just about
:16:31. > :16:35.all public sector jobs. Instead of that, he is suggesting that if
:16:35. > :16:41.wages are lower in the north, they could be less than people in other
:16:41. > :16:45.parts of the country. How it that will work, we do not know. It is
:16:45. > :16:55.not a definite proposal, it is a consultation. I think the unions
:16:55. > :17:05.
:17:05. > :17:07.will look very hard at that. Some of our viewers have also been
:17:07. > :17:10.getting in touch with their questions. Simon Charlott got in
:17:10. > :17:14.touch via Facebook. He wants to know ,"Wouldn't the easier answer
:17:14. > :17:16.be to help out the retail sector - reduce VAT and that way more people
:17:16. > :17:18.would start to spend?" That is the Labour Party policy. The coalition
:17:18. > :17:21.Government is against it because they see it will cost the
:17:21. > :17:23.government a lot of money. They would rather spend the money on
:17:23. > :17:27.boosting the infrastructure, things you talked about earlier tonight. I
:17:27. > :17:30.think that will be very popular and will create jobs. With people
:17:30. > :17:35.feeding for their jobs, there is not that much evidence that if you
:17:35. > :17:38.cut the price of things by a few % that they will go out and start
:17:38. > :17:45.spending again. I think the government does not believe that is
:17:45. > :17:49.the way forward. The thing that will kick-start the economy is for
:17:49. > :17:59.the economy to start growing and there is no indication of that.
:17:59. > :18:01.
:18:01. > :18:06.There forecast is for it to be pretty stagnant. By two very much.
:18:06. > :18:14.It is predicted to be the biggest right in generations, thousands of
:18:14. > :18:18.public sector workers are going out on strike tomorrow.
:18:18. > :18:20.The inquest into the death of Gary Speed has been opened and adjourned.
:18:20. > :18:24.Thousands of tributes were made to the former Leeds and Sheffield
:18:24. > :18:27.United player after he was found hanged at his home in Cheshire on
:18:27. > :18:34.Sunday. He was discovered by his wife. The full inquest is due to
:18:34. > :18:37.take place on the 30th of January. In other news now. A 22-year-old
:18:37. > :18:39.man has appeared before magistrates charged with causing death by
:18:39. > :18:43.dangerous driving after an alleged hit-and-run in which a six-year-old
:18:43. > :18:46.boy was killed. Owen Wightman was struck by a car close to his home
:18:46. > :18:49.in Wakefield in June. Peter Renshaw is also charged with failing to
:18:49. > :18:52.stop at the scene of an accident and failing to report an accident.
:18:52. > :18:54.The case will be heard at Leeds Crown Court next month.
:18:54. > :18:57.A 47-year-old woman has been arrested following a hammer attack
:18:57. > :19:00.on an 84-year-old woman in Leyburn in North Yorkshire on Monday.
:19:00. > :19:03.Police say the woman who is from the area allegedly stole a large
:19:03. > :19:10.amount of money in the attack. The elderly victim was taken to
:19:10. > :19:13.hospital with head injuries and has now been discharged.
:19:13. > :19:15.Hundreds of thousands of public sector workers are preparing to go
:19:15. > :19:18.on strike tomorrow. Teachers, bin collectors, hospital porters and
:19:18. > :19:21.police community support officers are just some of the people walking
:19:21. > :19:28.out in a row over their pensions. Our local government reporter Emma
:19:28. > :19:31.Glasbey is here to tell us more. Well, the walk-out tomorrow could
:19:31. > :19:33.have an impact on almost anyone. The strike is expected to be the
:19:33. > :19:37.biggest in a generation. In Yorkshire and the Humber, unions
:19:37. > :19:42.are predicting that up to half a million workers could take part in
:19:42. > :19:48.the industrial action. Amongst the services affected will be health,
:19:48. > :19:51.education and local council services. We'll hear more about the
:19:51. > :19:59.impact in just a moment. But why is this happening? I've been speaking
:19:59. > :20:06.to one of the public sector workers joining the strike.
:20:06. > :20:10.For 16 years, this woman has worked as part of Leeds City Council. She
:20:10. > :20:17.deals with housing in the City. But now she is making preparations to
:20:17. > :20:27.go on strike because she is angry about changes to her pension. What
:20:27. > :20:38.
:20:38. > :20:46.I'm a single parent, I have probably children up on my own and
:20:46. > :20:50.I have always worked. I did not want to be reliant on benefits. To
:20:50. > :20:55.all those people who will be inconvenienced, I am sorry, but
:20:55. > :21:04.this is my life. This is what I have worked for all my life. I do
:21:04. > :21:09.not think that one day's inconvenienced is anything to
:21:09. > :21:13.complain about when I am looking at a lifetime of poverty in my old age.
:21:13. > :21:20.The Government argues that the strike could damage the economy.
:21:20. > :21:26.Ministers say there is no money on the table to settle the dispute and
:21:26. > :21:32.they have already made a good offer. The message from hospitals across
:21:32. > :21:37.our region is that some non essential appointments have been
:21:37. > :21:42.cancelled, but if you have not been contacted, your appointment still
:21:42. > :21:47.stands. But they say that some delays are inevitable. It will be
:21:47. > :21:51.like a bank holiday or Christmas Day service. Both sides have
:21:51. > :21:55.emphasised that this dispute is not the general public but with the
:21:55. > :22:01.Government and the boy do everything they can to put the
:22:01. > :22:08.general public at risk. Over 1000 schools across Yorkshire will be
:22:08. > :22:18.affected by tomorrow's strike action. The picture does the very
:22:18. > :22:19.
:22:19. > :22:27.much from a local authority to local authority. Them one area, 97%
:22:27. > :22:35.will be closed, in another on their 40%. Parents are being urged to
:22:35. > :22:39.check school's or website. Universities are saying that some
:22:39. > :22:47.lectures will be cancelled and that students have to check the website
:22:47. > :22:49.so to find if they can attend lectures tomorrow.
:22:49. > :22:53.In terms of other services, bin collections right across Yorkshire
:22:53. > :22:55.will be affected. Most councils say daycentres are likely to be closed
:22:55. > :22:58.along with many community centres and children's centres. The
:22:58. > :23:04.majority of the region's libraries, museums, castles and art galleries
:23:04. > :23:07.will also shut. Our police forces say they will be maintaining vital
:23:07. > :23:10.policing services. North Yorkshire Police say they expect front
:23:10. > :23:12.counters at stations to be closed. More details on all the services
:23:12. > :23:15.affected tomorrow can be found on your local BBC websites.
:23:16. > :23:19.Thank you. We will be covering that tomorrow. Let's have a look at
:23:19. > :23:23.sport. Huddersfield Town's incredible
:23:23. > :23:26.unbeaten run of 43 league matches has come to an end. It took the
:23:26. > :23:29.league leaders Charlton to end it, but Town lost at the Valley 2-0.
:23:29. > :23:39.Before the game, there was a minute's applause in memory of Gary
