:00:04. > :00:08.Good evening and welcome to Look North.

:00:08. > :00:16.Yorkshire's top stories tonight: The tragic deaths of a West

:00:16. > :00:21.Yorkshire family. Friends struggle to understand the murders in Pudsey.

:00:21. > :00:24.Such beautiful little boys, both of them. I can't imagine what has

:00:24. > :00:28.happened, I just can't. I really can't.

:00:28. > :00:31.Also making headlines this evening: The trains now arriving in

:00:31. > :00:39.Yorkshire to ease overcrowding. But are they enough to keep track with

:00:39. > :00:49.And It's A Knockout is back. Stuart Hall puts the Yorkshire champions

:00:49. > :00:52.through their paces again, 35 years A wet and windy night to come which

:00:52. > :01:02.sets us up for a very disturbed week of weather across Yorkshire.

:01:02. > :01:06.

:01:06. > :01:09.Good evening, thank you for joining Tonight, police have confirmed

:01:09. > :01:12.they're not looking for anyone else after the bodies of four members of

:01:12. > :01:15.a family were discovered at their home at Pudsey, near Leeds.

:01:15. > :01:19.Police had been called yesterday evening to the house in Sheridan

:01:19. > :01:22.Way, where they found the family - two adults and two children - in

:01:22. > :01:25.the bedroom. It's being treated as a murder and suicide investigation.

:01:25. > :01:33.Our crime correspondent John Cundy's in Pudsey. A terrible thing

:01:33. > :01:37.to happen, John. It is. It would be dreadful at any

:01:37. > :01:40.time of year but can you imagine it in the run-up to Christmas? A young

:01:40. > :01:46.family who should have been looking forward to Christmas and then just

:01:46. > :01:50.a few weeks ago, a nine-year-old Ben Smith seen here raising money

:01:50. > :01:54.at his local school in Pudsey for Children In Need, truly tragic. The

:01:54. > :01:57.early stages of the investigation were hampered last night by fears

:01:57. > :02:00.that there may have been a tragic case of carbon monoxide poisoning

:02:01. > :02:06.and police were hesitant about going into the house but the grim

:02:06. > :02:10.reality today is it was no accident, it is a case of murder.

:02:10. > :02:15.The bedroom window of a suburban house, police alerted by concerned

:02:15. > :02:23.family members found the bodies of shop fitting designer Richard Smith,

:02:23. > :02:27.his wife Clare, both aged in their thirties, and their two sons, Ben,

:02:27. > :02:32.aged nine and Aaron, aged just one. There were signs of a slow-burning

:02:32. > :02:35.fire in the room. Throughout the day, flowers have been laid and

:02:35. > :02:41.tearful tributes have been spoken of the spot where police had sealed

:02:41. > :02:45.off the murder scene. I don't want to say any more. They were

:02:45. > :02:49.godparents to my little boy. What were the family like? A lovely.

:02:49. > :02:55.Such beautiful little boys, both of them. I can't imagine what has made

:02:55. > :03:00.this happen, I just can't. I really can't. All we know is they were

:03:00. > :03:06.lovely family, lovely two kids and we are in shock, and Surrey. I knew

:03:06. > :03:11.them from school and seeing them, I would bring the children to school

:03:11. > :03:15.and things, it is so horrible to know that not just the parents but

:03:15. > :03:18.the children have lost their lives. This afternoon, the sombre side of

:03:18. > :03:23.the little boys and their parents' bodies being driven away -- sombre

:03:23. > :03:28.sight. Inquiries are continuing today and I can confirm that this

:03:28. > :03:35.is a murder investigation, but at this stage, we are not seeking

:03:35. > :03:37.anybody else in connection with the incident. Nine-year-old Ben Smith's

:03:37. > :03:42.School in place back at the local cricket club where the family spent

:03:42. > :03:45.many days in the summer. I think these things are always horrible,

:03:45. > :03:49.but when they happen at this time of the year, they seem to be

:03:50. > :03:53.especially bad, so there is a great deal of sympathy for all of them.

:03:53. > :03:58.The tragic family had lived in this road for only a few months, but

:03:58. > :04:04.tonight, one floral tribute echoed the thoughts of a shocked community.

:04:04. > :04:08.Why? Some of those messages were truly

:04:08. > :04:13.poignant of, a typical example, "you were such a beautiful family,

:04:13. > :04:17.we can't believe you have all gone.".

:04:17. > :04:21.Indeed it is and that is the question everybody is all asking.

:04:21. > :04:26.Recently, we have managed to speak to a family member, haven't we?

:04:26. > :04:33.Yes, we have, a cousin of Richard Smith than he said this a few

:04:33. > :04:37.moments ago. -- banned. They were the perfect family.

:04:37. > :04:41.the suggestion that three family members had been murdered and the

:04:41. > :04:46.4th face suicide, can you comprehend that? No and I don't

:04:46. > :04:51.believe it for a minute. Aura will find it very hard to believe. -- or

:04:51. > :04:54.I will. It the big questions are not only wide but how did the three

:04:54. > :04:58.members of the Smith family die -- wife. The place would be able to

:04:58. > :05:03.tell us more until they get the results of the post mortem, we may

:05:03. > :05:09.hear more tomorrow. We will obviously be keeping you up

:05:09. > :05:12.to date with this story, and on a late bulletin at 10:25pm we will be

:05:12. > :05:16.live again from the scene, with the very latest as the police

:05:16. > :05:18.investigation continues. Next tonight, commuters on some of

:05:18. > :05:21.the country's most overcrowded train services are being told

:05:21. > :05:26.things will get better. Northern Rail, which runs services across

:05:26. > :05:30.Yorkshire and beyond, added 50 carriages to its fleet this morning.

:05:30. > :05:33.They'll be used mostly on peak hour trains in and out of Leeds. But

:05:33. > :05:41.with passenger numbers up 40%, campaigners say the news is good -

:05:41. > :05:45.but not good enough, as Alan Whitehouse reports.

:05:45. > :05:49.The economy might be in trouble but rail passenger numbers just won't

:05:49. > :05:54.stop growing. The problem is that until now, the number of carriages

:05:54. > :05:58.hasn't been. So it is little surprise that today's announcement

:05:58. > :06:01.has been welcomed by Northern Rail commuters. It is certainly

:06:01. > :06:05.overcrowded on the trains, it is definitely a good move. I would

:06:05. > :06:10.like to see a few more operators Dillard. I am not a frequent rail

:06:10. > :06:16.user, but it is a good idea. There is a definite shortage of capacity

:06:16. > :06:20.on most of the lines around here. We need more carriages and more and

:06:20. > :06:24.more people are using the trains. Overcrowding has been an issue

:06:24. > :06:27.almost since Northern Rail took over in 2004. It crops up as a

:06:27. > :06:31.passenger complaint time at the gate and no wonder, because

:06:31. > :06:35.passenger numbers have gone up by 40%, defying all the predictions

:06:35. > :06:39.that commuting would decline. Welcome as they are, officials

:06:39. > :06:44.admit the new carriages would solve all problems. Clearly with the

:06:44. > :06:48.rising demand of 40% more in just seven years, if that continues we

:06:48. > :06:52.will have to work really hard with our partners how we can improve the

:06:52. > :06:55.capacity of the second half of this decade. But it does mean that as

:06:55. > :07:00.from today, one in five of all peak train services will have more

:07:01. > :07:06.coaches, and some lines, like the Skipton and Ilkley routes, will see

:07:06. > :07:09.more peak-time trains. The new carriages will add over 800,000

:07:09. > :07:14.four seat per year. But according to some people, Yorkshire's

:07:14. > :07:21.commuters are still being changed - - short changed. Back in 2008, the

:07:21. > :07:25.North needed 182 extra carriages to ease overcrowding. Fast forward AKA

:07:25. > :07:30.this year and even with this additional fleet, we have had just

:07:30. > :07:34.60, a third of what was needed. Northern Rail is now carrying 88

:07:34. > :07:38.million passengers every year, but they are often using outdated

:07:38. > :07:43.trains cast off from other parts of the network. There is a growing

:07:43. > :07:45.realisation that something more needs to be done.

:07:45. > :07:52.Joining us now outside Wakefield's Westgate station is Chris Hyomes, a

:07:52. > :07:56.campaigner for better rail services. Then queue for joining us. Extra

:07:56. > :08:02.carriages, you must be happy with this news -- thank you for joining

:08:02. > :08:09.us? We are very happy with this news. We have seen a 40% increase

:08:09. > :08:12.in passenger numbers over the last seven years, so it is very good

:08:12. > :08:17.news and had we seen another 150 carriages, it would have been

:08:17. > :08:22.excellent news. I suppose the problems -- the problem is these

:08:22. > :08:27.are the people's cast-offs. But the people of Yorkshire deserved new

:08:28. > :08:32.carriages? We do. These are 21 years old and third-hand coaches,

:08:32. > :08:35.and yes I do believe the travelling public of West Yorkshire do believe

:08:35. > :08:42.brand new coaches and the sort of investment we are seeing in Greater

:08:42. > :08:46.London. Briefly, will it make a difference and reduce overcrowding?

:08:46. > :08:51.It will certainly reduce overcrowding. We have seen 50

:08:51. > :08:56.trains are being spread over the Airedale, of Wharfedale and Leeds-

:08:56. > :08:59.Doncaster or line, which will release rolling-stock for elsewhere,

:08:59. > :09:02.and it's like Northern Rail have said, it won't guarantee everybody

:09:02. > :09:06.a seat but it should make them easier to get on the trains they

:09:06. > :09:11.are trying to catch. Many thanks for joining us this evening.

:09:11. > :09:16.Coming up on Look North tonight: she is always a favourite.

:09:16. > :09:19.Jenny Agutter comes to Sheffield. The star of The Railway Children

:09:19. > :09:23.was in town to open a new ward at the Northern General.

:09:23. > :09:26.Other stories making the news this evening. A man from Barnsley has

:09:26. > :09:30.been given a life sentence and told he'll serve at least 12 years in

:09:30. > :09:33.jail for the murder of his baby son Kieron Hutchinson. The seven-week-

:09:33. > :09:39.old suffered severe brain damage last year after he was left for a

:09:39. > :09:44.short time with Ian Hutchinson. The 25-year-old was found guilty of his

:09:44. > :09:48.murder on Friday. At Sheffield Crown Court this morning, the judge

:09:48. > :09:56.said this was a spur of the moment loss of temper and there was no

:09:56. > :10:01.intention to kill. They are not easy cases, they are

:10:01. > :10:04.difficult and that they are very emotive, but putting emotions aside,

:10:04. > :10:09.it has to be a collection of all the evidence that surrounded. The

:10:09. > :10:12.most important aspects were the medical evidence and this was

:10:12. > :10:16.really overwhelming, as identified by the judge.

:10:16. > :10:19.The tourism body Visit York says it is losing more than a quarter of

:10:19. > :10:22.its workforce as a result of Government funding cuts. It is

:10:22. > :10:26.facing a budget shortfall next year of 300,000 but says it is working

:10:26. > :10:29.hard to identify new funding streams. 12 jobs will go.

:10:29. > :10:33.Partygoers in South Yorkshire are being reminded they face fines of

:10:33. > :10:36.80 for drunken behaviour. The police have said they will issue

:10:36. > :10:40.fixed-penalty notices to those who appear drunk and could then be

:10:40. > :10:46.involved in alcohol-related disorder. Offenders will be given

:10:46. > :10:48.the option of attending information sessions to avoid the fine.

:10:48. > :10:52.Next tonight, she's a British screen icon, but for once Jenny

:10:52. > :10:58.Agutter wasn't in Yorkshire to talk about her acting career. Instead

:10:59. > :11:03.she was in Sheffield to open a new 2.5 million hospital unit. It will

:11:03. > :11:11.treat people who suffer from cystic fibrosis. And as Tom Ingall found

:11:11. > :11:16.out, she has a very personal reason to support the cause.

:11:16. > :11:22.Being centre-stage might be familiar. So to the applause and

:11:22. > :11:26.flashing cameras. But the venue, perhaps less so. It is the personal

:11:26. > :11:29.touch which has brought Jenny Agutter to Sheffield's Northern

:11:29. > :11:34.General Hospital today, to meet young people suffering from cystic

:11:34. > :11:39.fibrosis. I have a Nice with cystic fibrosis and I remember when we

:11:39. > :11:47.first found dead, we were told that the median age left -- life

:11:47. > :11:51.expectancy was 80 years at that point -- when we first find out.

:11:51. > :11:58.Than the median age life-expectancy but eight years. Now it has gone up

:11:58. > :12:02.to over 30. In each of the rooms has been made to help the patient

:12:02. > :12:05.have the most comfortable stay possible. But because they cannot

:12:05. > :12:10.socialised to prevent the risk of cross-infection, there are full on

:12:10. > :12:14.sweet and entertainment facilities inside. It is very well equipped

:12:14. > :12:18.and it has its own pharmacy Arnside and a kitchen way you can prepare

:12:18. > :12:23.meals, the patients get the meals that all the other patients dead,

:12:23. > :12:29.but because we need extra calories for them, we cook extra things

:12:29. > :12:34.between males and -- all the other patients get. Oh, mother, I'm sorry.

:12:34. > :12:40.I know you didn't want us to find out. Jenny Agutter's acting career

:12:40. > :12:43.has spanned decades. One of her first Rolls was sent The Railway

:12:43. > :12:48.Children for the BBC, which she went on to play again for the

:12:48. > :12:55.cinema adaptation. And she is a patron of the cystic fibrosis Trust.

:12:55. > :12:59.I am not here to wait at petticoat this time, but only to say how

:12:59. > :13:02.extraordinary all the work is to make this happen. The unit is

:13:02. > :13:12.already fully operational, but fund-raising continues. Another

:13:12. > :13:19.reason why Jenny Agutter's visit It has had to contend with the wind,

:13:19. > :13:24.rain, planning objections and even wildlife, but finally the York will

:13:24. > :13:30.is up and running. It is at a new site and it will be

:13:30. > :13:34.here for one year only. It looks for all the world like

:13:34. > :13:38.spectacular because -- Meccano, and it is essentially what it is.

:13:38. > :13:44.Engineers have spent the day testing the pins which hold the

:13:44. > :13:48.wheel together. Independent testers also carry out test. It has taken

:13:48. > :13:51.three years to find the wheel a new home in York, but the final

:13:51. > :13:56.countdown is finally here. Organisers are now confident that

:13:56. > :14:02.2pm tomorrow afternoon will see the first members of the public ride on

:14:02. > :14:07.York's new wheel. Each pot can hold six people, which means the wheel

:14:07. > :14:12.can handle 350 site see us at a time, 1000 per hour. These are the

:14:12. > :14:16.site they will see. The views are from the former site at the Railway

:14:16. > :14:20.Museum. The new pitch at the Royal York Hotel Garden is closer to the

:14:20. > :14:24.city centre and the Minster. It is also very close to the station,

:14:24. > :14:31.making it unmissable for thousands of tourists. We went and had a look

:14:31. > :14:34.around to different spots, and I think it is a fantastic spot.

:14:34. > :14:38.Especially people coming by train. This weekend, people were doing the

:14:38. > :14:43.Christmas shopping, and the interest was amazing. Construction

:14:43. > :14:46.has taken several days longer than usual because of the weather. There

:14:46. > :14:52.really time-consuming hurdle has been planning permission. The

:14:52. > :14:58.scheme to put it behind an arts gallery fell foul of wildlife

:14:58. > :15:03.protection laws. But this one held up. It will operate at night as

:15:03. > :15:07.well as at day, giving visitors a new perspective of a city with more

:15:07. > :15:11.than its fair share of spectacular views.

:15:11. > :15:19.Lovely sunny skies they in York! Apparently horrendous weather still

:15:19. > :15:27.to come. Impressive ball control! Including

:15:27. > :15:30.this helping, helping -- including this, helping Wednesday to a win.

:15:30. > :15:39.Do you remember them? It is It's A Knockout champions from Yorkshire.

:15:39. > :15:44.They cannot resist meeting Stewart fall for another go 35 years later.

:15:44. > :15:47.I can remember Stuart Hall from the first time around with It's A

:15:47. > :15:51.Knockout. He still does the football on 5

:15:51. > :15:53.Live, his reports certainly stand out!

:15:53. > :16:00.I never understand a word he is saying.

:16:00. > :16:05.He is entertaining if not necessarily informative.

:16:05. > :16:11.Nice to see you, just for one night!

:16:11. > :16:15.I AM getting away as soon as I can! A mention for the hero of the

:16:15. > :16:18.weekend, Sheffield United's Richard Cresswell who has been praised by

:16:18. > :16:23.the Rochdale keeper David Lucas for potentially saving his life.

:16:23. > :16:26.Cresswell, who was this team-mate at look -- Luton, helped him after

:16:26. > :16:29.a collision helped him unconscious. He put him into the recovery

:16:29. > :16:34.position and swapped him from swallowing his tongue. After the

:16:34. > :16:40.game, the former player said someone as sensible and quick-

:16:40. > :16:45.thinking as Chris Rock reacted, and he was lucky.

:16:45. > :16:50.Creswell got in on the act as the blades one. Let's start in the

:16:50. > :16:54.championship of the classic game of two halves at Oakland -- Oakwell.

:16:54. > :16:58.It was all going so well for Barnsley, they go -- dominated the

:16:58. > :17:04.first half against Ipswich. A penalty followed by another

:17:04. > :17:11.contender for celebration of the season. They were of two-0 up at

:17:11. > :17:14.half-time, but then five second half goals from Ipswich. By the

:17:14. > :17:18.time Davies got his second it was a consolation.

:17:18. > :17:21.It was the Late, Late Show for Leeds United at Watford, One-nil

:17:22. > :17:27.down and on-loan keeper penalty save gave them a chance to get a

:17:27. > :17:33.point. A clumsy challenge deep into the -- injury time and Robert snob

:17:33. > :17:37.grass equalise. But for a defensive blunder, they

:17:37. > :17:43.might have held onto their lead. Their on-loan keeper will not want

:17:43. > :17:48.to see this too often. Sheffield Wednesday remain in

:17:48. > :17:53.second place in League One after a solid two-0 well at Oldham. Nifty

:17:53. > :18:01.footwork to CV first. Answers on a postcard as to what this penalty

:18:01. > :18:05.was given four. Even Gary Megson was bewildered. You don't know Eva?

:18:05. > :18:10.What has the referee said? haven't asked, I never do. I am

:18:10. > :18:13.just looking, there is a lot of bodies in there, I don't know.

:18:13. > :18:18.brace from Ched Evans helped Sheffield United to a comfortable

:18:18. > :18:25.win. In between his two goals, the rich -- Richard Cresswell put his

:18:25. > :18:28.body on the line to get one. After their long unbeaten run in

:18:28. > :18:31.the league, Huddersfield Town slumped to their second loss in a

:18:31. > :18:35.row. Spare a thought to Chesterfield, a

:18:35. > :18:43.brace of goals from Dean Morgan saw them too-one up against Wycombe,

:18:43. > :18:47.with just 10 minutes to go. But they lost 3-2, Stuart Bevan scoring

:18:47. > :18:53.in injury time. Rotherham were cruising but then

:18:53. > :18:58.found themselves going level. Flimsy defending saw Hereford get

:18:58. > :19:02.back in. This should have been cleared, but all was not lost. But

:19:02. > :19:08.they still got to win. Bradford City got a valuable point

:19:08. > :19:10.with a late equaliser from -- from David Hanson.

:19:10. > :19:13.It was attacked again the fixtures for the Sheffield Steelers, they

:19:13. > :19:19.beat Belfast on Friday, one at Coventry at the Cup on Saturday,

:19:19. > :19:27.and yesterday they made it 3 at three were their win against

:19:27. > :19:32.Braehead. He got a debut goal. Their player-coach admitted fatigue

:19:32. > :19:36.was a problem. The guys was tired, you don't want to use that as an

:19:37. > :19:42.excuse, but we did not have the extra jump to keep going. But we

:19:42. > :19:46.still ground out to win. However we come, we will take some, especially

:19:46. > :19:49.at the tail end. In sailing, Rotherham's Paul

:19:49. > :19:52.Donnison made a steady start to the world championships in Perth. The

:19:52. > :19:58.reigning Olympic Laser champion finished 5th and 8th in his opening

:19:58. > :20:02.two races, leaving him 18th overall. He is just seven points from the

:20:02. > :20:04.lead. The event is a key one as he built up to defending their gold

:20:04. > :20:09.medal next year on home waters in Plymouth.

:20:09. > :20:13.In speedway, the SFL Tigers have announced that almost -- former
