:00:06. > :00:09.Welcome to Look North. Tonight, a huge pay-out. A doctor gets nearly

:00:09. > :00:15.4.5 million in compensation after a hospital trust is found guilty of

:00:15. > :00:18.sex discrimination. We find out what it means for the trust, which

:00:18. > :00:21.is already heavily in debt. Also, going nowhere fast. The hard-

:00:21. > :00:26.up Sheffield snowboarder forced to train on artificial snow, rather

:00:26. > :00:29.than with his team-mates in the Alps.

:00:29. > :00:39.And after a 20-year break, the most famous vet on television returns to

:00:39. > :00:40.

:00:40. > :00:50.our screens. We speak to James Herriot's son. It will be a cold

:00:50. > :00:53.

:00:53. > :00:57.weekend. Join me for your weekend forecast.

:00:57. > :00:59.Good evening. The NHS trust that runs services in

:00:59. > :01:02.Castleford, Pontefract, Dewsbury and Wakefield has been ordered to

:01:02. > :01:07.pay millions of pounds in compensation to a doctor who was

:01:07. > :01:10.bullied so badly, she may never work again. The order comes on the

:01:10. > :01:13.same day that the towns' MPs demanded outside help to run the

:01:13. > :01:22.trust. They say they have lost confidence in the trust's

:01:22. > :01:27.management and it has betrayed its patients. Cathy Killick reports.

:01:27. > :01:34.They have called for action once, but after being ignored, they have

:01:34. > :01:41.been forced to try again. Three Yorkshire MPs visited the trust

:01:41. > :01:45.today to demand the reopening of overnight A&E services at

:01:45. > :01:50.Pontefract Hospital. It closed the service six weeks ago, forcing

:01:50. > :01:57.patients to travel to Pinderfields Hospital instead. The MPs say this

:01:57. > :02:02.is unacceptable. We want outside help to be brought in. We do not

:02:02. > :02:07.think the trust can sorted out. We need outside help to get it reopen

:02:07. > :02:12.so Pontefract can have services it needs. The trust says it cannot

:02:12. > :02:16.recruit doctors needed. It is also millions of pounds in debt and also

:02:16. > :02:24.learn today it must pay 4.5 million compensation to a doctor

:02:24. > :02:30.made mentally ill by a deliberate bullying campaign against her. Dr

:02:30. > :02:40.Eva Michalak was hounded from her job when she had a baby in 2003. In

:02:40. > :02:45.

:02:45. > :02:51.Having lost the confidence of their MPs, the trust board look

:02:51. > :02:57.beleaguered. Attention will focus now on waiting times at

:02:57. > :03:00.Pinderfields Hospital A&E, which might be busy at Christmas when GP

:03:00. > :03:04.surgeries are closed. Ten fire stations in West Yorkshire

:03:04. > :03:10.are to close in a move to save millions of pounds. 100 firefighter

:03:10. > :03:12.jobs will also be lost. The ten stations that are closing are at

:03:12. > :03:21.Gipton, Stanks, Rawdon, Otley, Brighouse, Elland, Hemsworth, South

:03:21. > :03:23.Elmsall, Batley and Dewsbury. They will be replaced with five new

:03:23. > :03:32.super-stations at Killingbeck, Menston, Rastrick, South Kirby and

:03:32. > :03:42.The cuts were approved at a meeting of West Yorkshire Fire Authority

:03:42. > :03:46.today. Ian White reports. This is a blue light response for

:03:46. > :03:52.fire crews in West Yorkshire. The way the county gets its emergency

:03:52. > :03:57.cover will change dramatically over the next four years after the Fire

:03:57. > :04:04.Authority agreed jobs should be cut and 10 stations closed as it tries

:04:04. > :04:09.to save millions. There has been a fire station in Gipton since 1987

:04:09. > :04:18.and it is one of the busiest in Yorkshire. The fire authority does

:04:18. > :04:27.-- decided it should close. People are not happy. I do not agree. It

:04:27. > :04:31.should stay where it is. It is disgusting. The traffic is

:04:31. > :04:37.struggling here. If we have a fire and they have to come from further

:04:37. > :04:43.away, it will be a problem. union reacted angrily and said it

:04:43. > :04:49.would have an impact on firefighters. They know what to a

:04:49. > :04:54.reduction of 135 firefighters means. We will be busier. Lives, of

:04:54. > :04:59.members of the public, and their own lives, they will be put at risk

:04:59. > :05:04.because of extended travel times to fires. They will be angry. The fire

:05:04. > :05:08.authority said it was a tough decision. Guarantee these are

:05:08. > :05:13.difficult to give. We have put the business case for it to demonstrate

:05:13. > :05:17.that safety of the public is paramount in this authority. We are

:05:18. > :05:24.trying to make sure that the right equipment is in the right place at

:05:24. > :05:30.the right time. The changes will be phased in over the next four years.

:05:30. > :05:33.There will be five new large stations replacing the 10 old ones.

:05:33. > :05:42.Later on Look North, we find out how the Halifax rugby fan who was

:05:42. > :05:45.paralysed by a brutal attack, is coping 15 months on.

:05:45. > :05:48.In other news, motorists have been facing severe congestion for much

:05:48. > :05:52.of the day after the A1 near Wetherby was closed following a

:05:52. > :05:56.lorry crash. The stretch between junctions 44 and 45 was shut after

:05:56. > :05:58.a multi-vehicle collision. An HGV overturned, sliding through the

:05:58. > :06:04.central reservation and shedding its load of cardboard, which

:06:04. > :06:07.scattered over both carriageways. One man is being treated for

:06:07. > :06:12.serious injuries. One northbound lane has reopened, but the rest of

:06:12. > :06:15.the road is unlikely to open until 8pm.

:06:15. > :06:18.Food safety officers have warned Christmas shoppers in York to

:06:19. > :06:21.beware of counterfeit vodka that could be a danger to health.

:06:22. > :06:27.Several cases of the Drop Vodka brand have been seized from city

:06:27. > :06:30.off-licences. Analysis has shown it contains industrial alcohol,

:06:30. > :06:40.chloroform and water and could be carcinogenic if consumed in large

:06:40. > :06:42.

:06:42. > :06:46.quantities. You do not want to drink it. It will not cause you any

:06:46. > :06:51.harm if you happen to have one drink of it, but if you were

:06:51. > :07:00.drinking it over a long time it could be carcinogenic. A bit like

:07:00. > :07:04.smoking, if you expose yourself to smoking over a number of years.

:07:04. > :07:09.Halifax rugby fan left paralysed after being attacked after a game

:07:09. > :07:12.says he hopes to walk again. David Singer was on his way home from the

:07:13. > :07:18.Championship grand final in Warrington last year. He was

:07:18. > :07:24.punched to the ground. Nobody has been charged with the attack.

:07:24. > :07:30.He used to cradle him as a baby. Now, his father never thought he

:07:30. > :07:34.would have to do the same when he was an adult. It is 15 months since

:07:34. > :07:42.his 33-year-old son was attacked. He uses a wheelchair and has looked

:07:42. > :07:47.after at a care home. There were a group of lads. They punched me. I

:07:47. > :07:52.fell to the ground and I managed to get up and they came back and did

:07:52. > :07:57.it again. He had watched Halifax beat Featherstone at Warrington.

:07:57. > :08:03.There had been tension between fans. After the game, he was set upon as

:08:03. > :08:09.coach loads of people looked on. Despite four rests, nobody has ever

:08:09. > :08:14.been charged. -- arrests. I was left-handed. I cannot use my left

:08:14. > :08:21.side now. I cannot use my fork out the table with my left hand. I

:08:21. > :08:23.cannot cut my foot up. Before the attack, he was a technician with

:08:23. > :08:28.the Yorkshire ambulance service with an active social life and a

:08:28. > :08:33.love of travel. The injuries were so severe he spent two weeks in a

:08:33. > :08:39.coma. Part of his goal hat to be removed, leaving him paralysed.

:08:39. > :08:44.was actually supporting us, as his old parents, he was doing insurance

:08:44. > :08:50.policies, and the car insurance. Now the roles have been reversed.

:08:50. > :08:55.We are looking after David like he was a child, because he has to

:08:55. > :08:59.press a button to sit up. We have to get him into the wheelchair.

:08:59. > :09:09.hopes to be able to return home soon and eventually learn to walk

:09:09. > :09:10.

:09:10. > :09:20.again. With so much determination, who dares to bet against him?

:09:20. > :09:20.

:09:20. > :09:23.We wish him well. Before 7pm. Everybody's favourite TV vet James

:09:23. > :09:29.Herriot returns to the television in a new series. We speak to his

:09:29. > :09:39.son. And the train driver who dedicated 60 years of his life to

:09:39. > :09:40.

:09:40. > :09:46.the railways. Now, the sport. While you were

:09:46. > :09:56.recovering, Jonny Bairstow did well. He is talented.

:09:56. > :09:56.

:09:56. > :10:02.You were tweeting each other. And Brooks. They are the future.

:10:02. > :10:08.They have been named in a Lions tour to go to Bangladesh. We were

:10:08. > :10:12.talking about Jason Gillespie. He said these young guys, they have

:10:12. > :10:17.had a few England players. Even though Yorkshire got relegated.

:10:17. > :10:21.Jonny Bairstow. You are smiling, watching him. They do well for

:10:21. > :10:28.Yorkshire. Gillespie, he has positive play.

:10:28. > :10:32.You cannot get more positive. Absolutely. He came from nowhere.

:10:33. > :10:38.We previewed the season. The reporter stayed with him. He could

:10:38. > :10:46.not believe how young he was. He is a talent. The youngsters coming

:10:46. > :10:53.through, they are a young squad. There is another young lad, Mills,

:10:53. > :11:03.plays for Essex but born in Dewsbury. They are taking him. If

:11:03. > :11:06.you look at the squad. I think Johnny should have gone to

:11:06. > :11:12.Pakistan. If there are any the -- any

:11:12. > :11:16.injuries, he will be good to go. Football, and you do not have to go

:11:16. > :11:21.far to pick the big game. The way trip is 25 miles for Huddersfield

:11:21. > :11:31.Town as they visit Sheffield Wednesday for the clash of the

:11:31. > :11:33.

:11:33. > :11:37.League One promotion rivals. The same colours, blue and white,

:11:37. > :11:41.and the same Yorkshire pride in both clubs. The distance between

:11:41. > :11:47.Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield in the promotion race

:11:47. > :11:52.has been too close for neighbourly comfort. After 20 matches, it is

:11:52. > :11:59.second against 4th in the table. The Derby could well resurface next

:11:59. > :12:04.season in the Championship. I would love Sheffield to be playing

:12:04. > :12:08.Championship football. If anybody else is there, it is down to them.

:12:08. > :12:13.Both clubs are well supported. They have the infrastructure. They have

:12:13. > :12:18.ambition to be playing. In it is a big game in its own context, a

:12:18. > :12:23.local derby. We are close to each other in the league. They are doing

:12:23. > :12:27.fantastically well. They are coming off the back of a disappointing

:12:27. > :12:34.performance they will want to rectify. It has all the ingredients.

:12:34. > :12:39.At Hillsborough, Wednesday are not -- unbeaten so far. They have an

:12:39. > :12:44.impressive defensive record. Huddersfield Town have some

:12:44. > :12:49.spectacular performances. They have come on their travels. There is a

:12:49. > :12:55.long way to go. It is psychological, whoever wins might have the edge.

:12:55. > :13:01.In it is pivotal. We have a good record at home. The biggest

:13:01. > :13:04.attendance at Hillsborough this season was just over 24,500. That

:13:04. > :13:11.will be challenged. That is the only thing you can predict in this

:13:11. > :13:18.match. That will be a great game.

:13:18. > :13:23.What is your best golf round? Nothing like Lee Westwood's. He is

:13:23. > :13:29.playing the best golf of his life. Yesterday, he said if it carries

:13:29. > :13:37.on... And today again. A poor round, 64! Imagine hitting

:13:37. > :13:39.Worksop's Lee Westwood has a massive 13 shot lead after two

:13:39. > :13:43.rounds of the Thailand Golf Championship. He followed up his

:13:43. > :13:46.career best 60 with a round of 64. It gives him a halfway score of 124,

:13:46. > :13:50.tied with the lowest-ever 36 hole total on the Asian Tour. Afterwards,

:13:50. > :13:52.Westwood said on Twitter that it is "for sure, the best I've ever

:13:52. > :13:55.played." Yorkshire is to have a new top

:13:55. > :13:58.level netball team. The Yorkshire Jets have been awarded a

:13:58. > :14:01.Superleague franchise. They will play matches across the region,

:14:01. > :14:09.including in Leeds and Sheffield from the New Year. The captain

:14:10. > :14:14.hopes it will raise the profile of the sport in the region. Everyone

:14:14. > :14:19.gets a stereotype of a netball, but it does not like that any more. It

:14:19. > :14:24.is more physical, and demanding. You should definitely come and

:14:24. > :14:27.watch to find out. A Sheffield snowboarder, who has

:14:27. > :14:30.just made it onto Team GB, has had to miss his first national training

:14:30. > :14:34.session because he couldn't afford it. Tom Farrow, who's 23, should be

:14:34. > :14:36.on the French slopes right now with the rest of the British team, but

:14:36. > :14:44.instead, he's still here in Yorkshire training on artificial

:14:44. > :14:52.snow and working in Pizza Hut. Emma Blackburn went to meet him.

:14:52. > :14:56.It is fast, fun and not for the faint-hearted. Tom Farrow has

:14:56. > :15:04.mastered the skill of snowboarding, and has been picked for the British

:15:04. > :15:11.team, but it comes with a price tag. I am going to spend 10,000. I have

:15:11. > :15:18.missed at the training camp, and cannot afford to eat or buy new

:15:18. > :15:24.equipment. I am owning a two-year- old to snowboard, that is not even

:15:24. > :15:29.mind. It is not just the snow in his life, he is funding his

:15:29. > :15:36.ambition by delivering pizzas. His takeaway tips or make all the

:15:36. > :15:45.difference. Bed is a different world, as well. -- it is a

:15:45. > :15:50.different world. I am managing to work five days, which is good. Then

:15:50. > :15:59.a rush from what work to a Snow Dome, and getting it in another two

:15:59. > :16:04.days of training. Meeting the cost is an uphill struggle. It is a

:16:04. > :16:07.frustrating and difficult and not ideal, but with that, I am

:16:07. > :16:17.snowboarding much more than my word before, and I'm grateful for that

:16:17. > :16:21.

:16:21. > :16:26.opportunity. -- much more than before.

:16:26. > :16:31.And before I go, let me transport you to somewhere more exotic. Where

:16:31. > :16:34.could this be? Somewhere warm, with the surf up. Hawaii, perhaps? No,

:16:34. > :16:39.it's Castleford! This is a FlowRider, which simulates waves

:16:39. > :16:42.and let's you experience what it might be like to be out on the seas.

:16:42. > :16:51.Alongside those who knew what they were doing at Xscape today were

:16:51. > :16:56.some of the Castleford Tigers players, who gave it a go. Good

:16:56. > :17:06.experience. First at De Meyer their -- first time I have never done

:17:06. > :17:09.

:17:09. > :17:19.anything like that. I will hope you get better as it goes a long.

:17:19. > :17:28.

:17:28. > :17:38.Artificial snow, artificial waves. He once stirred razzle dazzle

:17:38. > :17:41.

:17:41. > :17:45.America. -- he wants to. Fingers crossed for him.

:17:45. > :17:49.One thing about him, he is confident.

:17:50. > :17:59.Absolutely. We could do with another world

:18:00. > :18:00.

:18:00. > :18:09.champion in Yorkshire. I am so excited, I cannot wait! I will put

:18:09. > :18:12.my pyjamas on, and turn my telly on. A bit over-the-top for Look North,

:18:12. > :18:16.isn't it?! Now, All Creatures Great And Small

:18:16. > :18:19.was one of the most popular series to appear on TV. It was based on

:18:19. > :18:22.the books of James Herriot, and followed his exploits as a vet in

:18:22. > :18:25.the Yorkshire Dales. Well, this weekend, the character of James

:18:25. > :18:35.Herriot will be back on our TV screens in a new drama which looks

:18:35. > :18:49.

:18:49. > :18:55.at his early life as a trainee vet. You are late. I am very sorry, sir.

:18:55. > :19:05.Professor. It won't happen again, Professor. I am glad you can be

:19:05. > :19:21.

:19:21. > :19:28.assured Mr... James Herriot. That should whet your appetite.

:19:28. > :19:32.I you excited about this? Yes. This was the brainchild of the

:19:32. > :19:39.scriptwriter of the television series, and Johnny had this thing

:19:39. > :19:46.about doing a prequel of my father's days in Glasgow. We have

:19:46. > :19:55.been singing the theme tune, we have just realised! It is 20 years

:19:55. > :20:01.ago. 30 years ago. When I was researching my book, I discovered

:20:01. > :20:06.diaries my dad had written in his rhetoric college days, in his

:20:06. > :20:15.schooldays. There he is. I can see the resemblance! That is then our

:20:15. > :20:19.old surgery. -- that is. When he was at Glasgow, his idea was to be

:20:19. > :20:25.a small animal vet, but coming to Yorkshire, dogs and cats were a

:20:25. > :20:32.sideline. It was the cows, pigs, sheep and horses that was his big

:20:32. > :20:37.thing. Added people call them veteran? Yes, and they still do. I

:20:37. > :20:42.have seen little snippets of the series. The stories are fictional,

:20:42. > :20:46.but the background is authentic. They have recruited that they to

:20:46. > :20:51.acknowledge that my father was educated in, and I was as well. It

:20:51. > :20:57.was not pumping station for Glasgow Corporation. It was a fascinating

:20:57. > :21:07.place. It was a dump, but inside there, there was by Brazil, warmth,

:21:07. > :21:07.

:21:07. > :21:16.and we had a wonderful time. -- there was warmth. Other going to

:21:16. > :21:25.redo the old series? I don't know why the BBC don't do that. James

:21:25. > :21:35.Herriot is incredibly important for the tourism and hour region. -- in

:21:35. > :21:36.

:21:36. > :21:42.our region. This is the Herriott museum. It has been a difficult

:21:42. > :21:46.year, hasn't it? Yes. At numbers have gone down with the economic

:21:46. > :21:56.downturn, and we have got a business manager in there now, and

:21:56. > :21:56.

:21:56. > :22:03.hope Lee, things will turn out better. -- hopefully. Thirsk is a

:22:04. > :22:10.lovely place, but why do tourists go there? James Herriot, that is

:22:10. > :22:14.the reason. If it closed down, it would be a disaster. We try and

:22:15. > :22:22.encourage people to go. If you can the visitor book, the comments are

:22:22. > :22:32.always very good. People love the place. Do you know what I will buy

:22:32. > :22:32.

:22:32. > :22:37.the Christmas presents? The books! I am so glad you said books as well.

:22:37. > :22:47.That in the series was good, but I envy anyone who has not read the

:22:47. > :22:49.

:22:49. > :22:52.James Herriot books. They are so Now, not many of us can imagine

:22:52. > :22:55.doing the same thing for 60 years. But that's Gerry Skelton's story.

:22:55. > :22:58.These days, he's an engine driver on the North Yorkshire Moors

:22:58. > :23:02.Railway. But he began his career with steam 60 years ago, when he

:23:02. > :23:07.signed on as an engine cleaner at York Shed. He's been sharing a few

:23:07. > :23:12.memories with Alan Whitehouse. Jerry could do this job in his

:23:12. > :23:20.sleep. He may have notched up 60 years, but still have living

:23:21. > :23:30.memories of his early days. started off as an engine cleaner,

:23:31. > :23:35.

:23:35. > :23:39.and the first locomotive was this. We saw these steam engines. He had

:23:39. > :23:46.at years working all hours, in full the conditions, but for promotion

:23:46. > :23:56.came his way. -- in awful conditions. I got made a farmer,

:23:56. > :24:12.

:24:12. > :24:20.and worked my way up. -- firemen. He was finally made a driver.

:24:20. > :24:29.1968, I got passed on to the driver. When retirement came around, there

:24:29. > :24:36.was only one thing he could do. came up here. It all came back to

:24:36. > :24:46.me, very quickly. He knows her Yorkshire more limelight the back

:24:46. > :25:04.
