:00:05. > :00:09.Welcome to Thursday's Look North. Tonight, the strongest winds for

:00:09. > :00:14.years. Lorries overturned and trees uprooted as gusts reached a record

:00:14. > :00:17.93 mph. We've been out and about assessing the damage including a

:00:17. > :00:24.lucky escape for residents in one street as part of a house roof

:00:25. > :00:34.collapsed. Four floods in five days for one

:00:35. > :00:35.

:00:35. > :00:45.despairing homeowner as rivers burst their banks. I am on an

:00:45. > :00:48.emotional low. The kitchen looking Or terrible.

:00:48. > :00:54.The son who wants lessons learnt from his mother's death due to poor

:00:54. > :00:58.hospital staffing levels. No more rain tonight to add to the flooding

:00:58. > :01:08.looking Valley and it will be much less windy tonight compared with

:01:08. > :01:15.

:01:15. > :01:17.last night. All the details coming Good evening and thank you for

:01:17. > :01:19.joining us. Yorkshire's taken another battering

:01:19. > :01:23.from the weather with strong winds causing damage and disruption

:01:23. > :01:27.across the county. Among the debris, overturned lorries on some of our

:01:27. > :01:34.busiest roads. Meanwhile, uprooted trees have littered many Yorkshire

:01:34. > :01:41.streets. And the high winds that buffeted us even managed to lift

:01:41. > :01:45.roofs and outbuildings, dragging them across roads. That is a shed

:01:45. > :01:49.in someone's tree. To give you an idea of the magnitude, winds in

:01:49. > :01:54.South Yorkshire reached more than 90mph last night. Electricity firms

:01:54. > :01:59.say they were dealing with at least 100 separate supply problems. And

:01:59. > :02:02.tonight the Environment Agency has six flood warnings in place. In a

:02:02. > :02:06.moment, we'll be in South Yorkshire where those especially strong winds

:02:06. > :02:15.were recorded. But first Ian White has been speaking to people

:02:15. > :02:19.clearing up in West Yorkshire today. The aftermath of last night's

:02:19. > :02:25.strong winds and torrential rain Bubba. The normally busy road in

:02:25. > :02:33.Halifax looked more like a building site after part of a Ruth was taken

:02:33. > :02:37.off, sending a chimney crashing to the ground. The roof of number six

:02:37. > :02:41.has blown off, has come straight over the top of the building and

:02:41. > :02:45.this chimney, which is now in a bad state of repair is likely to

:02:45. > :02:51.collapse. The shocked owner of the house cannot believe people were

:02:51. > :02:57.not in should. Could have been people killed. That came down, and

:02:57. > :03:04.that is very heavy, that is from the back. Half the chimney has come

:03:04. > :03:09.down. That could have killed people. The chimney pots came down, a great

:03:09. > :03:12.big things, like that. We were lucky that people were not go out.

:03:12. > :03:17.As specialist workmen were drafted in to dismantle what was left of

:03:17. > :03:24.the chimney, people nearby said the conditions were terrible.

:03:24. > :03:28.weather was a horrendous. Heavy gales, sweeping rain, all the way

:03:28. > :03:33.across the houses, rattling windows and everything like that. Quite

:03:33. > :03:38.frightening. Very frightening, especially for somebody who has had

:03:38. > :03:43.their house roof blown off. For the power companies, it has been a busy

:03:43. > :03:47.day with electricity lines down in many areas. We have had

:03:47. > :03:50.approximately 600 customers in this area affected by power and we do

:03:50. > :03:55.apologise to all of those people that have been inconvenienced, but

:03:55. > :03:59.we have got quickly got around to those fault. We have 22 outstanding

:03:59. > :04:06.and we expect those customers to be back on the supply by early to

:04:06. > :04:10.seedling. Here it is not the electricity or strong winds, but

:04:10. > :04:18.the torrential rain that has caused the problem and 41 family, it has

:04:18. > :04:21.been heartbreaking. It is still just coming in. Rainwater has been

:04:21. > :04:26.pouring into Jamie's kitchen since New Year's Day and he has no idea

:04:26. > :04:31.where it is coming from and is at a loss as to what to do about it.

:04:31. > :04:41.will be doing it all might tonight, tomorrow, forever, Now, until

:04:41. > :04:41.

:04:41. > :04:45.summer. I can't do it. It's terrible. I can tell you are upset.

:04:45. > :04:50.It is dumped me in it. He is praying there will be no more rain

:04:50. > :04:56.and you'll never forget the misery the weather has caused. -- he will

:04:56. > :05:02.never forget. The highest wind were in higher

:05:02. > :05:05.Bradfield West of Sheffield with gusts of 93 mph. We have been in

:05:05. > :05:11.South Yorkshire. It is a route that takes the full

:05:11. > :05:15.force of the weather and last night's gales proved too much for

:05:15. > :05:19.this lorry last night. The word has been closed all day as a recovery

:05:19. > :05:24.team got work and the strong winds continued. This small South

:05:24. > :05:28.Yorkshire village escaped any damage last night but takes the

:05:28. > :05:34.honour of having been the windiest place in the region. It is still

:05:34. > :05:42.very windy in the hills above Bradford this afternoon but the

:05:42. > :05:46.gales were much stronger last night and the amateur record a gust of 93

:05:46. > :05:51.mph, the strongest gust in Yorkshire. At the local brewery,

:05:51. > :05:58.they told me the winds had been extremely powerful but this village

:05:58. > :06:02.is no stranger to strong gales. are just on the edge of the

:06:02. > :06:07.Pennines and it blows over the hills, and we get quite blustery,

:06:07. > :06:11.so we are used to it. In Sheffield, a brand new Tesco store ended up

:06:11. > :06:15.with a hole in the roof when a panel blew off last night and in

:06:15. > :06:22.Rotherham, garden fences and sheds were unable to stand the force of

:06:22. > :06:28.the gales. Some have owners face a frustrating clean-up. Really windy,

:06:28. > :06:32.and the rain is coming down, and it is dripping through. We had some

:06:32. > :06:37.buckets under here this morning. It is coming straight down. The rain

:06:37. > :06:42.that arrived left rivers swollen and banks of the reservoir looking

:06:42. > :06:50.like a choppy ocean. As the winds ease, people will be looking

:06:50. > :06:56.forward to a much quieter night. I think we can all say he here to

:06:56. > :07:01.that. Policy and he will try to explain this. Is this unusual?

:07:01. > :07:05.We do get this now and again but this was very powerful and what

:07:05. > :07:10.happened was we get a standing wave that sits there like it did last

:07:10. > :07:15.night for 6-8 hours and if you are in the path of the down draft from

:07:15. > :07:19.this new wave, you really know about it, and in the last few years

:07:19. > :07:23.we have had numerous incidents of 70 miles an hour winds, but last

:07:23. > :07:29.night they kept coming four hours and hours, and I thought my roof

:07:29. > :07:31.was coming off and it was quite disturbing at times. To get a 93

:07:31. > :07:36.mile per hour wind speed in Yorkshire is extraordinary.

:07:36. > :07:41.It must be really bad in higher Bradfield. We were there for the

:07:41. > :07:43.Yorkshire Symphony, and it is high and exposed, but even in some other

:07:43. > :07:50.areas, those winds were whistling for.

:07:51. > :07:55.We had a lid on the atmosphere that squeezed the atmosphere and the

:07:55. > :08:02.best. When I broke up this morning, I immediately remembered from

:08:02. > :08:09.writing about it at the Sheffield storm of 1962 when Sheffield's got

:08:09. > :08:17.a 16 -- a 96 Not Our dust. The destruction was awful. We got away

:08:17. > :08:23.with it. This is Sheffield in 1962. It flattened a prefabricated

:08:23. > :08:27.housing estate. They're worth fairly flimsy

:08:27. > :08:32.constructions back them up, but nevertheless we did have a vitality

:08:32. > :08:38.is in 1962 and we were fairly lucky last night.

:08:38. > :08:45.It is just luck that that massive gust hit a low populated area like

:08:45. > :08:53.hybrid field in between Sheffield and Pedersen. It could have hit

:08:53. > :08:57.Penistone, and we could have had 1962. Panorama did a special in

:08:57. > :09:01.Richard Dimbleby, and it caused headlines around the world. We got

:09:01. > :09:06.away with it last night. You will tell us later that

:09:06. > :09:14.hopefully we will not have any more water. Have you got a clue?

:09:14. > :09:20.We might have a half decent weekend because things are improving.

:09:20. > :09:28.High river levels have been going on following persistent rain. There

:09:28. > :09:33.has been some persistent flooding. We have our reporter in

:09:33. > :09:37.Boroughbridge. There is a lot of water, isn't there?

:09:37. > :09:42.This is what it is supposed to be the picnic area overlooking the

:09:42. > :09:50.river but the river has burst its banks, coming out onto the grass,

:09:50. > :09:54.leaving the benches in water. Going up some miles to a little village,

:09:54. > :09:58.there is a caravan and camping Club and the owner said that is

:09:58. > :10:02.completely flooded so he will not be taking bookings for some days.

:10:02. > :10:07.There have been pockets of problems for flooding across North Yorkshire,

:10:07. > :10:13.as we report in Skipton. A battle to prevent flooding got

:10:13. > :10:19.under way last night. Firefighters pumped water off a road as they

:10:19. > :10:23.attempted to keep homes dry. Winds gusted up to 70 miles per hour, and

:10:23. > :10:28.motorists were told to make essential journeys. By dawn,

:10:28. > :10:32.several minor roads between Skipton and Gargrave were covered with

:10:32. > :10:36.water, 2 ft deep in places, and one motorist had a lucky escape as she

:10:36. > :10:41.tried to make her way through this long stretch a flooded road.

:10:41. > :10:46.managed to get out of the car, shook up by what has happened, but

:10:46. > :10:50.is safe and well. So, the car was washed away from the road and down

:10:50. > :10:56.into the river? As far as we believe, it is in the reverse. That

:10:57. > :11:02.hasn't been recovered. She got out before that happened. She is safe

:11:02. > :11:06.and well, but upset by what has happened, but safe and well. This

:11:06. > :11:14.afternoon, of the flood plain was soaking up much of the water but

:11:14. > :11:20.some roads were still submerged. And with further run of, it could

:11:20. > :11:24.be several days before this drains away.

:11:24. > :11:29.You can safely say a lot of the area is flooded. Are there any more

:11:30. > :11:34.flood warnings operational at the moment?

:11:34. > :11:39.Yes, there are still six flood warnings in place for North

:11:39. > :11:44.Yorkshire tonight. Two of those are for this area, two of those are,

:11:44. > :11:48.unsurprisingly, for the River Ouse in York. The levels are expected to

:11:48. > :11:52.peak at around 5:00am tomorrow morning which will mean the obvious

:11:52. > :11:56.areas like the foot pass around kings and queens days will be

:11:56. > :12:01.flooded and the Environment Agency said this is normal level for this

:12:01. > :12:05.time of year, so, although the storms over the last 24 hours have

:12:05. > :12:10.felt and looked severe, the consequences in terms of flooding

:12:10. > :12:14.should not be too serious, but if you have any concerns with flooding

:12:14. > :12:18.in your area, do check the Environment Agency's website where

:12:18. > :12:23.they will keep you up-to-date with the latest information.

:12:23. > :12:27.Thank you very much, no picnics there for a while. Let's hope those

:12:27. > :12:31.rivers will recede. Living in York, there is always

:12:31. > :12:36.intense interest from people when the weather even slightly floods.

:12:36. > :12:41.It was immense again this morning. People looking at it in wander, and

:12:42. > :12:46.it happens about 20 times a year. But that is quite interesting, but

:12:46. > :12:48.according to Paul, it will recede quickly.

:12:48. > :12:50.Northern Powergrid say there have been 100 separate weather-related

:12:50. > :12:58.incidents across Yorkshire, leaving a total of 861 customers without

:12:58. > :13:02.electricity. Compared to Scotland, that is not

:13:02. > :13:04.too bad, it is it? They put their emergency plan into operation and

:13:04. > :13:07.are working to restore supplies. Meanwhile, hundreds of homes in

:13:07. > :13:11.West Yorkshire have had gas for heating and cooking today for the

:13:11. > :13:15.first time in several days. Gas supplies were cut to 1,600 homes in

:13:15. > :13:17.Steeton, near Keighley, after strong winds damaged equipment.

:13:17. > :13:24.Engineers needed to visit individual properties to restore

:13:24. > :13:28.supplies. Thanks for all of your pictures

:13:28. > :13:34.during the course of the day. We'll take a look at them at the end of

:13:34. > :13:39.the programme. You can e-mail us, our address is look.north@bbc.co.uk.

:13:39. > :13:42.We appreciate them because they add an added dimension. You can post

:13:42. > :13:52.them on our Facebook page at BBC Look North Yorkshire. Or you can

:13:52. > :14:00.

:14:00. > :14:02.tweet a picture to @BBCLookNorth, Stay with us as we meet a woman who

:14:02. > :14:04.says her life has been ruined by the breast implants causing

:14:04. > :14:12.controversy. Who should pay for putting right the surgery carried

:14:12. > :14:16.out with the wrong type of Poor bank holiday staffing levels

:14:16. > :14:19.on a ward at St James' hospital have been blamed for the death of a

:14:19. > :14:22.67-year-old woman. An official report by the hospital has accepted

:14:22. > :14:28.there were delays in ensuring Christine Lofthouse was given the

:14:28. > :14:31.right medication. Her son is about to settle a negligence case against

:14:31. > :14:41.the hospital, but says it's more important that lessons are learnt.

:14:41. > :14:42.

:14:42. > :14:46.Our Health Correspondent, Penny Bustin, has this exclusive report.

:14:46. > :14:51.Where her name and details should be recorded, there are blank spaces.

:14:51. > :14:56.Just more than 100 errors her son highlighted in have medical records

:14:56. > :15:01.after her death. She had been at the hospital for just three days.

:15:01. > :15:05.It fitted with a you Rina the tract infection, her son told staff she

:15:05. > :15:09.was on antibiotics. She was transferred to the medical

:15:09. > :15:16.assessment unit, but no one picked upon in medication knead until it

:15:16. > :15:22.was too late. They failed to pick it up on ward rounds twice. For 24

:15:22. > :15:28.hours, they left her in her bed, apparently not there. There are

:15:28. > :15:33.mistakes, documentation, Documentation missing, records not

:15:33. > :15:36.kept, medication apparently given which were not given. Later, at an

:15:36. > :15:42.interview I had with the Trust, they admitted that my mother had

:15:42. > :15:46.not been given the antibiotics. Pearson's contention, accepted in

:15:46. > :15:52.the hospital's report sets that delays happened because there were

:15:52. > :15:56.too many patients to deal with. It was no year 2011. To realise that

:15:56. > :16:04.initial period of time, less than three days, medical professional

:16:04. > :16:08.people who have a care of duty, failed at every stage, I do not

:16:08. > :16:12.know how I feel. All I know was that I do not want revenge, I want

:16:12. > :16:17.to make sure this does not happen again. Having look through it, it

:16:17. > :16:21.is quite damning as regard to the care your mother received. It is a

:16:21. > :16:25.shock to see how little they did for her. There was a lack of staff.

:16:25. > :16:30.They did not have time to read the notes that. On occasions, perhaps

:16:30. > :16:36.they did not have time to read the notes. Had they have the time to do

:16:36. > :16:40.that, then perhaps the outcome would have been very different.

:16:40. > :16:46.you saying that was responsible, be under staffing, the pressure of

:16:46. > :16:50.work, that led to her death? In my fear, yes. And that is not unusual.

:16:50. > :16:54.That is tragic. The hospital accept that standards

:16:54. > :16:58.of care failed, have apologised to the family and say an action plan

:16:58. > :17:02.will ensure lessons have been learnt. They can offer their

:17:02. > :17:06.sincere condolences to the family. You sit there and the doubt

:17:06. > :17:10.yourself. Did I do everything possible? The answer was, yes, we

:17:10. > :17:15.did everything we were supposed to do as carers, and the people who

:17:15. > :17:16.did not was the people you put your trust in, the hospital.

:17:17. > :17:20.Other news from around the region now.

:17:20. > :17:21.A student bar in Sheffield is to keep its licence following a

:17:22. > :17:25.controversial all-day drinking party. A student was seriously

:17:25. > :17:31.injured after being hit by a bus outside Bar One after one of the

:17:31. > :17:35.University Union's annual Christmas events last month. It's thought she

:17:35. > :17:38.fell into the road after drinking heavily at the venue. Police called

:17:38. > :17:42.for an urgent review of the licence but today councillors decided it

:17:42. > :17:45.shouldn't be changed. Teachers and pupils have spoken of

:17:45. > :17:49.their loss after a 13-year-old boy was found dead at his Sheffield

:17:49. > :17:53.home. Police are not treating the death of Ritchie Allsop as

:17:53. > :17:56.suspicious, but won't comment on reports he was found hanged. He was

:17:56. > :17:59.a Year 9 pupil at Ecclesfield school, where the headteacher said

:17:59. > :18:05.all there were shocked and saddened at the death of a pleasant,

:18:05. > :18:09.cheerful and polite pupil. Anti-capitalist protestors have

:18:09. > :18:13.voted to end their occupation of a square in Leeds city centre. The

:18:13. > :18:19.Occupy camp has been on City Square since November. The protestors say

:18:19. > :18:21.persistent bad weather has made it unsafe for residents. Meanwhile,

:18:21. > :18:24.Sheffield Cathedral has said it will take legal action if

:18:24. > :18:28.protestors don't move from their site in the city within the next

:18:28. > :18:32.week. Rotherham Police are concerned

:18:32. > :18:35.about this man, who disappeared earlier in the week. Mark Holland,

:18:35. > :18:39.who's 31, left his home in Kimberworth for work early on

:18:39. > :18:45.Tuesday morning, but never arrived. Officers say his disappearance is

:18:45. > :18:51.completely out of character. A Leeds woman says her life has

:18:51. > :18:53.been ruined by a breast implant that ruptured. Sherrie Vye becomes

:18:53. > :18:57.so chronically tired, she has to use a wheelchair after silicone

:18:57. > :19:04.from her implant leaked into her body. 40,000 British women had an

:19:04. > :19:07.implant supplied by the French firm PIP. The implants had been filled

:19:07. > :19:12.with the wrong type of silicone and French women can have theirs

:19:12. > :19:22.replaced free of charge. But here, ministers are deciding what to do

:19:22. > :19:23.

:19:23. > :19:27.after initially saying the implants need not be replaced. Earlier, I

:19:27. > :19:37.spoke to Sherrie Vye. But first, here's Cathy Killick with a summary

:19:37. > :19:38.

:19:38. > :19:43.of the controversy. It is silicone implants supplied by

:19:43. > :19:47.the French firm PIP that are causing concerns. They were banned

:19:47. > :19:51.in 2010 after being found to contain industrial cynical the gel.

:19:51. > :19:57.Just before Christmas, the French have a Ritter's said the implants

:19:57. > :20:02.also had a risky 5% rupture rate and advise they be removed. In the

:20:02. > :20:07.UK, the rupture rate was found to be 1%, no riskier than other

:20:07. > :20:12.implants. The Government cheer said removal was not necessary for the

:20:12. > :20:15.40,000 women who had had them. The statistics are being reviewed and a

:20:15. > :20:19.Health Secretary has said that women who while where it should be

:20:19. > :20:24.helped by poor weather provided their implants. If any woman is

:20:24. > :20:28.concerned, they should speak to their GP or consultant surgeon.

:20:28. > :20:33.They should be responsible for delivering them reassurance,

:20:33. > :20:38.information and if necessary, providing a scam. We will provide

:20:38. > :20:44.for NHS patients access to their medical records, access to more

:20:44. > :20:47.advice and if they wanted or needed, access to a spell of four further

:20:47. > :20:54.digresses. The a further announcement is expected from the

:20:55. > :21:00.Government tomorrow. You know all too well the problems

:21:00. > :21:05.of the company macro implants. You arrive cheer in a wheelchair. How

:21:05. > :21:11.has the leaking affected sue? completely devastating. Everything

:21:11. > :21:16.has changed. I cannot go out with my family. Everything has gone.

:21:16. > :21:22.used to be very athletic. How would you describe your health now?

:21:22. > :21:27.lucky if I go out twice a week. I am bed-bound quite often and in a

:21:27. > :21:33.wheelchair. You have been to the NHS. They have offered to remove

:21:33. > :21:37.that one of the implants. Why did you say no? I did not want to be

:21:37. > :21:42.left with one in and one out. I do not think it would look right. I do

:21:42. > :21:46.not think it would do myself any good a missionary. I have had of

:21:46. > :21:51.them left in. What you would really be asking for is for both of them

:21:51. > :21:54.out on some kind of reconstruction. What would you say to those who

:21:54. > :22:00.said that she went privately, it should be those that you pay to

:22:00. > :22:05.sort your problems have now? When I went privately, I went as a healthy

:22:05. > :22:10.person. Because of the implants, I have become and healthy and have

:22:10. > :22:15.medical conditions which need NHS treatment. You seem very calm about

:22:15. > :22:20.it, but I know that you feel your life is in tatters. I am just tired

:22:20. > :22:26.of it all. It has been going on for so long. When be in plans started

:22:26. > :22:32.leaking, how were you aware that you were becoming ill? I started

:22:32. > :22:38.with a bit of City, pain in my chest, tingling, I found some less

:22:38. > :22:45.-- I found some lambs in my chest and went to my doctor. What you see

:22:45. > :22:51.your future? It is just taking it day by day. Hopefully, they will

:22:51. > :22:55.find something and they will sort me out. But just day-by-day. In the

:22:55. > :23:02.meantime, every day is a struggle. Definitely. Not just for me, for my

:23:02. > :23:08.family. How has it impacted on them? I have four children. Two of

:23:08. > :23:14.them have been more or less my carers. By to have a centre for his

:23:14. > :23:18.disabled. It has turned my children into full-time carers. They do not

:23:24. > :23:31.you wish you had ever hit the world -- the word, breast implant? If I

:23:34. > :23:37.all day to send in your pictures of the aftermath of the stormy weather.

:23:38. > :23:47.Amanda Harper has been taking a look at some of the pictures you've

:24:07. > :24:10.have been uprooted by the sheer force of the gales. In Bradford, we

:24:10. > :24:15.were said this picture of iron railings crumpled under the weight

:24:18. > :24:23.Huddersfield were cut to this morning. Proved have have been

:24:23. > :24:29.causing plenty of damage. This was the result of one house in

:24:29. > :24:38.Doncaster. This shows the force of the gales. A garden shed scooped up

:24:38. > :24:42.in the storm and lodged in nearby trees. We had this photo of a

:24:42. > :24:48.child's trampoline. But the work to clear up now begins.

:24:48. > :24:54.We have just received this video. FIFA did was taken on a road near

:25:43. > :25:43.

:25:43. > :25:47.Keep the pictures coming in. I had numerous updates on Twitter as to

:25:47. > :25:50.the weather conditions yesterday. Let's have a quick look at last

:25:50. > :25:55.night's wind speeds without extraordinary one in South

:25:55. > :26:00.Yorkshire. I bet the pilot did not fancy landing in the airport there.

:26:00. > :26:05.That was a powerful one. Thankfully, things will quieten down in the

:26:05. > :26:09.next 12 hours. Tomorrow is not looking too bad. This weather front

:26:09. > :26:15.will bring some patchy rain into western areas late in the day. It

:26:15. > :26:22.has been a lovely afternoon. Lots of sunshine. There is still a gusty

:26:22. > :26:26.wind. It is forced six along the Yorkshire coast. Overnight, the

:26:26. > :26:31.winds will continue to ease. Nowhere near as bad as it was last

:26:31. > :26:35.night. If you have got shelter from the wind, they could be a touch of
