:00:10. > :00:18.Welcome to Friday's North -- Look North. A big boost to South

:00:18. > :00:23.Yorkshire's economy. Hundreds of hi-tech jobs in Rotherham.

:00:23. > :00:28.Investing in the past - a makeover for the Halifax piece all.

:00:28. > :00:31.And it is our champions against theirs in the Superleague World

:00:31. > :00:36.Club Challenge. And Yorkshire rocks - we are

:00:36. > :00:40.hanging out at Europe's first ever boulder dash.

:00:40. > :00:45.And we saw some sunshine in York earlier before it clouded over this

:00:45. > :00:55.afternoon. It will turn colder this weekend and I will have a full

:00:55. > :01:00.

:01:00. > :01:03.Our main story tonight is the multi-million pound nuclear deal

:01:03. > :01:09.agreed by the Prime Minister that will bring hundreds of skilled jobs

:01:09. > :01:13.to South Yorkshire. David Cameron says he wants eight series of new

:01:13. > :01:19.nuclear reactors constructed, manufactured and engineered by

:01:19. > :01:24.British companies. Rolls Royce will bring in a factory in Rotherham to

:01:24. > :01:29.Bill's key components. How much does it South Yorkshire need a jobs

:01:29. > :01:36.boost? Unemployment rate in Rotherham are at 10.5 %, higher

:01:36. > :01:39.than the national rate which is just over 7.5 %. But Rotherham's

:01:39. > :01:44.manufacturing base is strong with more than 50 % of workers there

:01:44. > :01:54.employed in that sector. Nationally the rate is closer to 10 %. It

:01:54. > :01:58.means that Rotherham is well placed to receive this boost.

:01:58. > :02:02.Smiles and in Paris. Today's agreement to build a new generation

:02:03. > :02:08.of nuclear power stations is being welcomed in South Yorkshire. Under

:02:09. > :02:13.the deal, at Rolls Royce will bring a factory on this land in Rotherham

:02:13. > :02:18.creating hundreds of high-tech jobs to build a nuclear components.

:02:18. > :02:23.have taken the engineering skills of this region and moved them into

:02:23. > :02:28.a modern setting. Therefore, a great vote of confidence and it

:02:28. > :02:34.goes to underline the vision of the decision that was taken here a

:02:34. > :02:39.decade ago. The new plant will be built on the side of the former

:02:39. > :02:45.coking works, scenes of one of Britain's bloody industrial battles

:02:45. > :02:50.over the future of the coal industry in 1984. 28 years on, much

:02:50. > :02:57.of this site is taken up by the Advanced Manufacturing park. 500

:02:57. > :03:04.people work here developing high and engineering and technology.

:03:04. > :03:08.Rolls Royce in any facility will be producing very complex, high-value

:03:08. > :03:11.components for the new generation power stations. We are working with

:03:11. > :03:17.the Rolls Royce al ready to help them buy new ways of manufacturing

:03:17. > :03:22.these parts. This is the kind of thing that Rolls Royce will be

:03:22. > :03:26.putting into their factory but they are working already with us.

:03:26. > :03:30.choice of Rotherham comes more than a decade of work to establish a

:03:30. > :03:35.base for a specialist nuclear engineering no hole. This part of

:03:35. > :03:44.South Yorkshire has a long history of being at the heart of the

:03:44. > :03:46.engineering industry. Today, it is renewables and tomorrow it will be

:03:46. > :03:51.nuclear. Outline planning permission has already been granted.

:03:51. > :03:58.If the scheme receives approval, construction work could get under

:03:58. > :04:03.way by the end of the year. Talks have been taking place today

:04:04. > :04:09.in an effort to save the South Yorkshire police helicopter. The

:04:09. > :04:13.county's police authority meant to discuss a legal challenge which

:04:13. > :04:19.would mean forces sharing helicopters.

:04:19. > :04:25.It has held with over 700 arrest last year but the rotor blades will

:04:25. > :04:30.soon stop turning. The base just of chef or's Parkway it will close and

:04:30. > :04:33.cover will come from helicopters in Wakefield, North Derbyshire and

:04:33. > :04:37.Humberside airport. All the other get their forces in the country are

:04:37. > :04:41.signed up to the new scheme. South Yorkshire is the only force to say

:04:41. > :04:46.No. Response times a what the police authority is worried about.

:04:46. > :04:51.At the moment the crew can be above Sheffield city centre in 3.5

:04:51. > :04:57.minutes. Under the new care service it will be 12 minutes. We would not

:04:57. > :05:01.have the same level of service because the flying time of a

:05:01. > :05:06.helicopter is about one hour and a half. 20 minutes each way we have

:05:06. > :05:10.lost time that could be available for operational duties. Figures

:05:10. > :05:15.given to us suggests that no way in South Yorkshire will get a better

:05:15. > :05:19.response time under the plans. Councillors on the Police Authority

:05:19. > :05:24.are angry about the potential loss of the South Yorkshire police

:05:24. > :05:27.helicopter but the police her service are coming back with a new

:05:27. > :05:33.proposal. Anything less than a dedicated South Yorkshire aircraft

:05:33. > :05:37.and they will have a fight on their hands.

:05:37. > :05:42.That same meeting of the police authority agreed to hold planned

:05:42. > :05:48.cuts to police of the San numbers by raising council taxes instead.

:05:49. > :05:53.The plans meant a reduction of 110 officers and 22 support officers

:05:53. > :05:56.from April. Those cuts have now been deferred for three years. In

:05:56. > :06:01.contrast, earlier today West Yorkshire Police Authority agreed

:06:01. > :06:04.to freeze the portion of council tax they receive for the next

:06:04. > :06:11.financial year which entitles them to more money from central

:06:11. > :06:18.government. Later: in the driving seat - would

:06:18. > :06:22.you put your 11-year-old behind the wheel of a car?

:06:22. > :06:28.A student from York has been jailed for eight months for hacking into

:06:28. > :06:34.the social media website Facebook last year. Glenn Mangham, who is 26,

:06:34. > :06:39.and previously shown the search engine Yahoo how it could prove --

:06:39. > :06:45.improve its security, he claimed he could do the same for Facebook.

:06:45. > :06:48.Sheffield County Court has been hearing what evidence against Mr

:06:48. > :06:53.Arthur Scargill and the National Union of Mineworkers. He is

:06:53. > :06:55.claiming a of damages from the boulder dash in a row over his

:06:55. > :06:59.expenses. The judgment is expected next week.

:06:59. > :07:03.An inquest into the death of a soldier who died in a bomb blast in

:07:03. > :07:07.Afghanistan has been told the area had earlier been checked for

:07:07. > :07:11.explosive devices. Trooper Ashley David Smith who was 21 was three

:07:11. > :07:15.weeks into his tour of duty. He was serving with the Royal Dragoon

:07:15. > :07:21.Guards. The mother of Jordan Sullivan who

:07:21. > :07:25.went missing in the River Ouse on Tuesday has banged the emergency

:07:25. > :07:29.services. Police say they are continuing our their inquiries to

:07:29. > :07:33.try to find the 19-year-old, but underwater searches have been

:07:33. > :07:38.called off. Bus drivers in South Yorkshire have

:07:38. > :07:42.agreed a pay deal. They have voted to accept the offer ruling out any

:07:42. > :07:47.further industrial action. Drivers began a series of strikes in

:07:47. > :07:51.November last year and were planning further industrial action.

:07:52. > :07:56.Dating back more than 200 years, the Piece Hall in Halifax was once

:07:56. > :08:01.at the centre of Yorkshire's textile industry. It is an

:08:01. > :08:05.astonishing piece of architecture or but over recent years the site

:08:05. > :08:10.has fallen into disrepair. So much so that many of the shop owners who

:08:10. > :08:14.still trade there say they are finding it hard to make ends meet.

:08:14. > :08:22.But this week the council has pushed ahead plans for a renovation

:08:22. > :08:27.project. The sole survivor of the great

:08:27. > :08:32.eighteenth-century cloth Halls, a grade one Georgian masterpiece.

:08:32. > :08:36.Once seen as the most prestigious building of its type, the Halifax

:08:36. > :08:41.piece hoard still commands our attention today. The site is now

:08:41. > :08:46.home to a variety of different shops but look closer and you will

:08:46. > :08:49.see the building has been neglected. Half of the units are empty. For

:08:49. > :08:56.the traders who do called this place home, it can be quite a

:08:56. > :09:03.struggle. Dawn opened her clothing shop here seven months ago. We are

:09:03. > :09:07.doing our utmost to increase that fall throughout Yorkshire. We are

:09:08. > :09:15.doing our bit but it is very soul- destroying to sit here all day long

:09:15. > :09:19.and not see a soul. And Dawn is not alone. At this shop the shelves are

:09:19. > :09:24.bursting with positive energy but it is still hard work. We are here

:09:24. > :09:29.six days a week and we do evenings as well, turning the stock round,

:09:30. > :09:33.keeping the shop clean and when we do get new people, they are

:09:33. > :09:37.impressed. It is just getting people to come here in the first

:09:37. > :09:41.place. Things are looking up. The council has recommended the

:09:41. > :09:46.approval of funding for a multi- million-pound renovation scheme

:09:46. > :09:51.which will transform the area as a visitor attraction. But it has been

:09:51. > :09:55.a long time coming. It is a wonderful building but it is a

:09:56. > :10:01.difficult building to plan for. Many of the unit's arsenal so it

:10:02. > :10:05.has taken a long time to get the right plants. It takes a lot of

:10:05. > :10:11.time to persuade people that we really have the right plans for

:10:11. > :10:14.them to invest in. The traders already here promise a warm welcome

:10:14. > :10:22.and with 11 million worth of funding now secured by the council,

:10:22. > :10:30.it is hoped this side can look forward to a brighter future.

:10:30. > :10:35.Let's hope so. When I was 11, I learnt to drive releasing the

:10:35. > :10:39.handbrake on my dad's car I ended up crashing through the garage.

:10:40. > :10:45.What has been going on is a rather good idea. It took me three times

:10:45. > :10:51.to pass my test. But the government is proposing having lessons for

:10:51. > :11:01.children as young as 11. Nick Ravenscroft has been to a driving

:11:01. > :11:10.

:11:10. > :11:20.Dylan has set his sights high. But right now it is enough just seeing

:11:20. > :11:23.

:11:23. > :11:30.over the steering wheel. How cool Just 11, he is out for a treat with

:11:30. > :11:38.his brother. What was he like? Vibrating with excitement. Him and

:11:38. > :11:42.his brother were so excited about having a driving lesson. 11-year-

:11:42. > :11:47.old Lauren is having fun also barred for parents it is about

:11:47. > :11:52.safety. In the last two decades, road safety has improved but young

:11:52. > :11:58.drivers are still disproportionately at risk. The

:11:58. > :12:02.statistics speak for themselves. Only 8% of drivers are aged 17-24

:12:02. > :12:08.but they account for 30 % of people who are killed while travelling in

:12:08. > :12:13.cars. At the moment you pass your test, you get the keys and you

:12:13. > :12:23.learn from your mistakes. We believe these courses should be

:12:23. > :12:25.

:12:25. > :12:29.encouraged after all you learn by But on day one that, it is about

:12:29. > :12:39.thrills and everyone at this Berta -- birthday party was very excited

:12:39. > :12:47.

:12:47. > :12:53.Fantastic idea. The Leeds Rhinos tackled the Aussies manly Sea

:12:53. > :12:58.Eagles for the right to be crowned world club champions. And join me

:12:58. > :13:08.later on the tallest climbing wall in Yorkshire, but will I make it to

:13:08. > :13:13.

:13:13. > :13:22.I have to say, when you look at the football situation, it is as feisty

:13:22. > :13:30.as they come. There was a rumour about Rangers. It got a lot of

:13:30. > :13:35.reaction. It is very plausible that he might be interested in a another

:13:35. > :13:39.football club, but Sheffield Wednesday issued a statement,

:13:39. > :13:44.categorically saying there was no substance in those stories that

:13:44. > :13:51.suggested he was going to make an investment in Glasgow Rangers. He

:13:51. > :13:57.has no interest in rages. Impressed with the stiffness of that because

:13:57. > :14:03.he has put fans at ease. Other clubs have a lot on their agenda.

:14:03. > :14:11.Huddersfield town has gone very quiet. It is all in the hands of

:14:12. > :14:17.this man. It was exciting to get a call. It must be that he has just

:14:17. > :14:22.been for an interview. What is the latest? From the club's point of

:14:22. > :14:26.view, nothing except to be inundated from caused by agents and

:14:26. > :14:36.they will be sifting through applications. They will not make

:14:36. > :14:38.

:14:38. > :14:42.any decisions about the type of Ken Bates, what is happening there?

:14:42. > :14:48.Lots of betting this afternoon on an Neil Warnock. The odds are very

:14:48. > :14:52.high. Tomorrow is the last game for Neil Redfearn in charge of Leeds.

:14:52. > :14:58.That is unless he gets the job himself. I suspect that something

:14:58. > :15:02.big will happen at Leeds United next week. It is a big week in

:15:02. > :15:06.Leeds this week, isn't it? Yes, the big game between Leeds and

:15:06. > :15:11.Doncaster but you don't often get to see that -- two of the best

:15:11. > :15:17.rugby league club sides playing together in Yorkshire. More than

:15:17. > :15:20.20,000 fans are expected at Headingley where Leeds Rhinos are

:15:20. > :15:30.challenging Manly Sea Eagles for the chance to become a world club

:15:30. > :15:30.

:15:30. > :15:36.champions. For me it is England against

:15:36. > :15:46.Australia. They are the champions Down Under and We Are the Champions

:15:46. > :15:49.

:15:49. > :15:53.We have lost the last two we have been involved in and it takes a

:15:53. > :16:00.loch to get into a game like this, you have the Super League season. -

:16:00. > :16:09.- it takes a lot. You don't want to get there and lose. The fans are

:16:09. > :16:19.spending their hard earned money and for us it means a great deal.

:16:19. > :16:20.

:16:20. > :16:27.It is an opportunity that you have to give 100 % for.

:16:27. > :16:33.Both top-quality sides, Leeds are very physical, very tough. A lot of

:16:33. > :16:38.skill and we have very similar experience in our team.

:16:38. > :16:47.It is always a great game to be a part of. Headingley has a great

:16:47. > :16:52.crowd and great atmosphere so we are really looking forward to it.

:16:52. > :17:02.We have a chance to be crowned world champions so it is something

:17:02. > :17:03.we are looking forward to. These opportunities don't come along very

:17:03. > :17:08.often. Time will tell, but I wonder

:17:08. > :17:13.whether the Aussies may have taken this a bit more gentle this time.

:17:13. > :17:19.Last time they had a warm-up game against the Broncos and now they

:17:19. > :17:24.have been here for a few days and straight into the Rhinos.

:17:24. > :17:28.Other Aussie sides have put British sides to the sword. They have had

:17:28. > :17:36.just as little preparation. I can't imagine any bunch of Aussies taking

:17:36. > :17:40.any game less than seriously. I think it will be a proper contest.

:17:40. > :17:44.On to boxing, and Rotherham's Magna Centre is the setting for this

:17:44. > :17:50.weekend's big domestic fight featuring the new kid on the block,

:17:50. > :17:56.Kid Galahad, the latest port -- product of the Ingle gym. He will

:17:56. > :18:00.be fighting Jason Booth. This fighter, who weighs nine stone, is

:18:00. > :18:06.already drawing comparisons with Prince Naseem Hamed, for good

:18:06. > :18:09.reason. This is Kid Galahad, one of a

:18:09. > :18:17.handful of top prospects training out of the Ingle gym in Sheffield.

:18:17. > :18:22.Tomorrow night he will be fighting for the vacant -- vacant W C -- WBC

:18:22. > :18:30.super-bantamweight title. He was first introduced to the gym by a

:18:30. > :18:35.family friend and fret -- fellow Yemeni, Prince Hamed.

:18:35. > :18:39.We were talking about boxing and one-litre -- one thing led to

:18:39. > :18:42.another and he took me here. I have not looked back since.

:18:42. > :18:48.Her the connections and similarities do not end there.

:18:48. > :18:54.his day Prince Naseem fought in the same weight class and the St -- the

:18:54. > :18:57.two have similar attributes and the International belt that Kid Galahad

:18:57. > :19:04.is fighting for tomorrow is the same belt that Prince Naseem won in

:19:04. > :19:10.1994. The belt means a lot to me. I am

:19:10. > :19:13.going to dismantle Jason Booth. 33 his recent rise in the sport

:19:13. > :19:20.coincides with a number of prospects coming out of the Ingle

:19:20. > :19:25.gym. It could set -- signalled a return to Sheffield's glory days.

:19:25. > :19:30.The glory days have not happened since Prince Naseem was around. Now

:19:30. > :19:35.with Kid Galahad, Richard Towers and others coming through,

:19:35. > :19:40.Sheffield Arena, Ponds Forge, it is creating a bus.

:19:40. > :19:46.It will be a tough challenge but one that Kid Galahad will have to

:19:46. > :19:50.overcome if he is to begin to emulate his childhood hero.

:19:50. > :19:55.This weekend's Track Cycling World Cup event is worth keeping an eye

:19:55. > :20:02.on. Coverage on the BBC continuing to Sunday. This is the Olympic

:20:03. > :20:11.selection event. Ben Swift was on the track today and finished 14th.

:20:11. > :20:20.Ed Clancy last night led the Great Britain team pursuit boy is against

:20:20. > :20:25.the Aussies. -- boy as.

:20:25. > :20:30.This is a great place to start from. I could not really hear what he

:20:30. > :20:34.said that I am sure it was significant! You are going cycling

:20:34. > :20:38.tomorrow? For I think I might go to the

:20:38. > :20:44.supermarket in brick house. Another sport of sorts, for all of

:20:44. > :20:50.the adrenalin junkies out there. Tomorrow is the UK's first 3 D

:20:50. > :20:55.bouldering facility opening in brick house.

:20:55. > :21:02.The Rokt Climbing Gym has attracted 7500 members in 10 months. A Olivia

:21:02. > :21:08.Richwald is there for us. What is 3D bouldering?

:21:08. > :21:13.It is climbing needs a free run in. You can see yourself. Look at some

:21:13. > :21:18.of these muscles. This facility opens tomorrow and it is the first

:21:18. > :21:21.of its kind in the UK and possibly in Europe. It is part of a big

:21:22. > :21:27.expansion plan at this old flour mill in Brighouse and I have spent

:21:27. > :21:34.the afternoon here and it is a rabbit warren of rooms and walls.

:21:34. > :21:36.Here is a bit at a look around. This mill was derelict for a decade

:21:36. > :21:43.but over the last 10 months something remarkable has been

:21:43. > :21:48.taking place. Where they used to Mill flour, adventurers from around

:21:48. > :21:52.the UK are getting their kicks, some of them 21 metres up. This is

:21:52. > :21:58.the tallest climbing wall in Yorkshire. If this is a bit scary

:21:58. > :22:02.for a beginner, there are plenty of smaller obstacles to get started on.

:22:02. > :22:07.Low-level climbing without ropes is called bouldering and demand for

:22:07. > :22:14.the business in Yorkshire is here. 100th 30 people are signing up

:22:14. > :22:21.every week and so far that Jim has 7500 members. -- 130 people are

:22:21. > :22:26.signing up. The owners are branching out into free-running, a

:22:26. > :22:30.kind of urban gymnastics which is very fashionable.

:22:30. > :22:37.Joining me now is Leigh Topping, the design director. Tell us what

:22:37. > :22:41.free-running is. These guys have just filled me and! It is a mix of

:22:41. > :22:45.gymnastics and flowing movement. These boys will do it out in the

:22:45. > :22:48.urban environment. We are installing it for people to get

:22:48. > :22:55.involved in a safe environment indoors. What would it look like

:22:55. > :23:05.here? Good question. It is such a big project, we off in phase two of

:23:05. > :23:05.

:23:05. > :23:11.four. -- we are in. It will come soon, wanted? Phase one will come

:23:11. > :23:18.in the next few weeks and phase two will be a much bigger development,

:23:18. > :23:22.hopefully tied up with some other free run us. Euan Noble is the

:23:22. > :23:28.business man. It is an impressive facility. Was it hard to get

:23:28. > :23:36.insurance? For sure. We investigated the whole market and

:23:36. > :23:45.did extensive risk assessment and be. Somebody to take on the risk. -

:23:45. > :23:49.- and we got somebody. There was massive demand. We have grown to

:23:49. > :23:53.140 a week. Thank you very much. Earlier he was telling me that

:23:53. > :23:57.since they have opened they have been inundated with requests for
