:00:12. > :00:16.Route Hello and welcome. Getting ready for the front line.

:00:16. > :00:19.If the Yorkshire soldiers making their final preparation before

:00:20. > :00:24.heading off to Afghanistan. If we were hear their hopes and fears

:00:24. > :00:28.before they leave for one of the most dangerous places in the world.

:00:28. > :00:31.If also tonight, a fire wrecks a leisure centre in Selby just one

:00:31. > :00:36.month after a million-pound refurbishment.

:00:36. > :00:41.Despite opposition from hundreds of villagers, plans for a housing

:00:41. > :00:48.development get the go-ahead. are really furious. If this goes

:00:48. > :00:52.through, God knows what will happen here. We will be called Leeds will.

:00:52. > :00:57.In Sheffield, the university is marking the end of a project to

:00:57. > :01:01.refurbish some of its most iconic buildings. Be spent 36 million

:01:01. > :01:04.doing that the Arts Tower and tonight it has let up in a

:01:04. > :01:08.celebration. Looking westwards, there is a lot

:01:08. > :01:18.of cloud but towards the coast temperatures reached near record

:01:18. > :01:25.

:01:25. > :01:29.It is one of the most dangerous places on what -- in the world but

:01:29. > :01:31.this week hundreds of soldiers from Yorkshire Art due to be deployed

:01:31. > :01:35.there. Third Battalion the Yorkshire

:01:35. > :01:39.Regiment is being sent to Helmand Province in Afghanistan to --

:01:39. > :01:49.Afghanistan for a six-month tour of duty. They are making their final

:01:49. > :01:51.preparations. This army training ground in Bulger

:01:51. > :01:56.is home to Third Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. They are about

:01:56. > :02:01.to deploy 21 of their most dangerous places in the world. As

:02:01. > :02:06.you might expect, the training is a tough area. Judy is no exception.

:02:07. > :02:11.These soldiers will be marching -- have been marching for about two-

:02:11. > :02:14.and-a-half hours. They are carrying 40 kilograms in wait and this is

:02:14. > :02:23.the kind of thing they will be expected to do in Afghanistan every

:02:23. > :02:28.day. They are straight into a fire fight next. 21-year-old Michael

:02:28. > :02:32.from Halifax has only been in the army for a year. In a few weeks'

:02:32. > :02:36.time, he will be fighting in Helmand Province. We have trained

:02:37. > :02:42.for it. I have just had a friend who has lost his brother out there

:02:42. > :02:49.and it is not good to hereof, but she bashed -- but you were there to

:02:49. > :02:55.do your job. There are 650 soldiers who will be taking over the role of

:02:56. > :02:59.task force Helmut. Their job will be to hold ground and to improve

:02:59. > :03:04.security for at the local population. The main thing is to

:03:04. > :03:10.hand it over to the Afghans and obviously make hearts and minds and

:03:10. > :03:14.stuff like that. Some of these soldiers took part in operations

:03:14. > :03:20.back in Afghanistan in the 2009, and there are looking forward to

:03:20. > :03:26.seeing the process that has been made. A any person who says they

:03:27. > :03:32.are not nervous is a liar because it is just how it is. Every day

:03:32. > :03:39.will be a risk out there. training has certainly paid off. It

:03:39. > :03:44.has been a very good training package. Bravery and battle skills

:03:44. > :03:49.are awarded in this Battalion, it is clear that these soldiers are

:03:49. > :03:54.ready for their up and coming mission. It is about transition

:03:54. > :03:58.into an Afghan lead. There has been deep progress over the last few

:03:58. > :04:03.years and it is a very worthwhile mission. We hope to take that

:04:03. > :04:08.forward over the course of the summer. The soldiers are about to

:04:08. > :04:13.be deployed for a six-month tour of duty. It will be dangerous and they

:04:13. > :04:20.may not all return. For the families left behind, it will be a

:04:20. > :04:25.long and anxious wait. Our thoughts go with them.

:04:25. > :04:28.A major fire has caused serious damage to a leisure centre in Selby.

:04:28. > :04:32.Residents living nearby where warned to keep their doors and

:04:32. > :04:36.windows shut when the blaze broke out at the leisure centre.

:04:36. > :04:42.The centre had just undergone a refurbishment and may now have to

:04:42. > :04:48.be pulled down. As dawn broke this morning, it was

:04:48. > :04:52.flames that lit the sky in Selby. The Abbey Leisure Centre was ablaze.

:04:52. > :05:02.Nearby it residents were given a rude awakening. I thought it would

:05:02. > :05:06.not come this far. It was a bit scary. Ebdon look bad to start but

:05:06. > :05:10.then as the morning progressed there was more and more as -- more

:05:10. > :05:15.and more or smoke and we saw the riff dipping and then the police

:05:15. > :05:20.and fire engines arrived. firefighters brought the flames

:05:20. > :05:23.under control. Specialist appliances drafted in from West

:05:23. > :05:28.Yorkshire to help. Residents it will to keep doors and windows

:05:28. > :05:33.closed. The smoke dead to die down at the rapidly when the crews went

:05:33. > :05:38.into the building. The crews did a good job, did at their best to

:05:38. > :05:43.contain the fire to the first floor. There is significant damage to the

:05:43. > :05:50.leisure centre. As you can see, the damage inside is extensive. Coming

:05:50. > :05:53.up the stairs, it has water damaged and smoke blackened. Through here

:05:53. > :05:59.is completely destroyed. Surveyors do not yet know whether the

:05:59. > :06:06.building -- building can be saved. A significant blow to the town.

:06:06. > :06:13.understand everyone was evacuated safely, let us be thankful for that.

:06:13. > :06:19.Yorkshire Fire and Rescue have done a fantastic job. A 1 million refit

:06:19. > :06:27.was completed only last summer. No one knows how much it will cost to

:06:27. > :06:32.repair this time. Later on Look North, hoping to make

:06:32. > :06:39.a splash at the Olympics after success at the London aquatic

:06:39. > :06:45.centre. We speak to two Yorkshire divers about their hopes for 2012.

:06:45. > :06:47.The crimes of a conman who defrauded to unsuspecting residents

:06:47. > :06:51.across Yorkshire for years are being highlighted by a BBC

:06:51. > :06:55.programme. One couple in Harrogate paid Julian Donoher thousands of

:06:55. > :07:00.pounds for drainage work, even though no work was carried out.

:07:00. > :07:06.It is just one example of what is proving to be a lucrative business

:07:06. > :07:14.for criminals across such a. We will be talking to Ruth and just

:07:14. > :07:17.about the difficulty of catching doorstep traders.

:07:17. > :07:22.Julian Donoher conned mainly elderly people out of nearly

:07:22. > :07:27.30,000. He was jailed for three years after a major investigation

:07:27. > :07:32.by North Yorkshire trading standards. Retired teacher Jane and

:07:32. > :07:37.her husband in Harrogate were among his victims. The men were there for

:07:37. > :07:40.four days of digging. It was an enormous hole. We were not

:07:40. > :07:45.suspicious because we did not know for the pipe was and they could not

:07:45. > :07:49.find it. We thought they were doing the best they could. The Morrisons

:07:49. > :07:55.were conned into being Julian Donoher 330 for unlocking the

:07:55. > :08:02.train at their home, work that should have been done for 65. When

:08:02. > :08:06.the train dock -- drain blocked again, they shelled out again.

:08:06. > :08:11.said that is an awful lot of money, could we get it cheaper elsewhere?

:08:11. > :08:14.And they said that is the nature of the job and was so charming and

:08:14. > :08:19.convince them that I am afraid I believed them. The courts are now

:08:19. > :08:25.trying to recover funds from Julian Donoher to reimburses victims for

:08:25. > :08:29.work charges -- work charged way above its value or not done at all.

:08:29. > :08:34.A judge described it as a deliberately planned professional

:08:34. > :08:41.fraught -- fraud. Julian Donoher is now behind bars, just one example

:08:41. > :08:46.of the serious doorstep columns faced by investigators.

:08:46. > :08:56.Joining us now is the truth and Jews, head of fraud investigations

:08:56. > :09:02.for North Yorkshire trading standards. -- truth and just.

:09:02. > :09:06.enviably elderly people who are targeted by these types of gangs.

:09:06. > :09:10.Looking at this case, I do not know how much it would cost if I

:09:10. > :09:14.suddenly was told there was a problem there were -- with my

:09:14. > :09:18.drains. This fraud was more sophisticated than the average case

:09:18. > :09:24.we deal with. There are lots of cases where elderly people are told

:09:24. > :09:29.they need work and they're not in a position to check. Are you

:09:29. > :09:34.surprised by the ease with which people are taken in? Not at all.

:09:34. > :09:44.Primarily because these offenders are professionals. They have spent

:09:44. > :09:45.

:09:45. > :09:49.years training in ways to read -- to con people. Do they actually

:09:49. > :09:55.looked and watch for houses where single elderly people live by

:09:55. > :10:02.themselves? Absolutely. And they also... There is also evidence of

:10:02. > :10:06.gangs passing on information between them. There is a basic

:10:06. > :10:10.thing that you would say, that is that anyone who knocks on your door,

:10:10. > :10:14.it is always one of those crimes that gets you really angry, but

:10:14. > :10:20.there is basic advice to say it looked, check with the people who

:10:20. > :10:25.are supposedly doing the business and also get other quotes.

:10:25. > :10:31.advice is very clear. People should not deal with doorstep traders at

:10:31. > :10:36.all. Legitimate businesses do not need to cold call. Called a halt --

:10:36. > :10:41.called Colin telephones -- telephone calls and other serious

:10:41. > :10:46.issue. We urge people to be very cautious. We would advise people to

:10:46. > :10:52.deal with local reputable traders or on the basis of a friend or

:10:52. > :10:58.family member. -- a recommendation from a friend or family member. We

:10:58. > :11:03.have made seven arrests in the last two weeks alone. We have a number

:11:03. > :11:08.of victims in ongoing cases who have spent thousands of pounds on

:11:08. > :11:18.these gangs and have lost their life savings. You can see more

:11:18. > :11:19.

:11:19. > :11:25.about that on BBC One tomorrow. Chesterfield Council has scrapped

:11:25. > :11:28.plans to increase their council tax in the new financial year. Instead

:11:28. > :11:33.the local authority will accept a Government grant and freeze rates.

:11:33. > :11:37.The council had announced plans of a rise, but changed their minds

:11:37. > :11:41.after feedback from locals. The budget for the coming year will now

:11:41. > :11:46.be agreed on Thursday. Polly Signor are continuing to

:11:46. > :11:50.search for and 19-year-old man who has been missing for two weeks.

:11:50. > :11:54.Jordan Sullivan was last seen on the River Ouse on Valentine's Day.

:11:54. > :11:58.Police have been carrying out daily checks on the riverside where he

:11:59. > :12:02.was last seen. The Yorkshire production of

:12:02. > :12:09.Frankenstein's Wedding has been nominated for a Royal Television

:12:09. > :12:13.Society award. The play was filmed at -- in Leeds and broadcast live

:12:13. > :12:17.on BBC Three last year. Do you have strong views about the

:12:18. > :12:21.state of Yorkshire's economy? Are you struggling with the cost of

:12:21. > :12:28.living? Perhaps to a business is booming and you think things are

:12:28. > :12:32.not that bad. We will be discussing all these issues on a special

:12:32. > :12:38.programme. It is called our economy, the Look

:12:38. > :12:48.North debate. If you would like to be part of the audience, contact us,

:12:48. > :12:50.

:12:51. > :13:00.Tell us you a story and what you would like to ask our region's

:13:01. > :13:13.

:13:13. > :13:18.Her show what a have come up with a way of stopping metal theft. They

:13:18. > :13:22.could be workman, but actually the are metal thieves. At Yorkshire

:13:22. > :13:27.Water site in Headingley in Leeds, cameras record the moment beastie

:13:27. > :13:34.with tractor solely can melt down the metal parts. -- the steel.

:13:34. > :13:40.Yorkshire Water say that this type of crime has reached an epic level.

:13:40. > :13:46.It is up constant battle. They can strike at night, when it is darker.

:13:46. > :13:53.Quite often, the world where fluorescent vests to fit in. --

:13:53. > :13:58.they will wear. Once the East covers are stolen, it is all too

:13:58. > :14:04.easy for people to fall down manholes and the bark. This is the

:14:04. > :14:07.solution - a different type of cover. It has made out of fibre

:14:07. > :14:12.glass and it will replace the traditional type of metal cover. We

:14:12. > :14:20.have tried them and a number of hot spots, particularly Sheffield and

:14:20. > :14:30.castle fort. CCT V and motion sensors have been installed. It is

:14:30. > :14:39.

:14:39. > :14:43.If these fibreglass covers work well, they will be installed across

:14:43. > :14:47.the network. They are apparently more durable than the metal ones,

:14:47. > :14:57.the are cheaper to install and most importantly, they have little or no

:14:57. > :14:57.

:14:57. > :15:07.scrap value. I meet in has been taking place all

:15:07. > :15:08.

:15:08. > :15:13.day to decide whether 300 homes can be built in a village in Yorkshire.

:15:13. > :15:18.The proposals were originally rejected, saying it could not have

:15:18. > :15:23.deal with a development on the scale. Why has this proposal been

:15:23. > :15:29.so controversial? The queued out the door and along the road. About

:15:29. > :15:36.350 people, almost all of them fighting plans for 300 new homes in

:15:36. > :15:42.Menston. People worried about changing the feel of the village

:15:42. > :15:45.and traffic. There are problems with schools, there may be a

:15:45. > :15:53.problem of having too many people into many houses and cars in the

:15:53. > :16:03.village. We are really fury is, and if this knows -- if this goes you,

:16:03. > :16:06.God knows what will happen here! -- we are furious. This is what of the

:16:06. > :16:11.field that they are fighting to save. They argue that Menston's

:16:11. > :16:18.infrastructure does cannot deal with the extra homes. Developers

:16:18. > :16:21.disagree, saying the two sites are suitable for the new homes. With

:16:21. > :16:28.diametrically opposed opinions, this was always going to be a

:16:28. > :16:34.heated meeting but no one thought it would last quite so long. At

:16:34. > :16:40.around 3:30pm, councillors left in a minibus for a site visit. They

:16:40. > :16:47.did not return for almost two hours. The meeting has just finished. And

:16:47. > :16:52.you bring us up-to-date? It finished 45 minutes ago and it

:16:52. > :16:56.lasted about eight hours. That is very unusual. Tonight, councillors

:16:56. > :17:00.have approved plans for what site in Menston. It all the residents

:17:00. > :17:07.here that this had been reluctant decision and the have had a very

:17:07. > :17:11.difficult day. -- they have had. The campaigners have spent two bad

:17:11. > :17:15.years fighting against these proposals. The mood was more

:17:15. > :17:22.depleted, disappointed and angry after the meeting. There may be an

:17:22. > :17:28.appeal. That is a possibility but by no means a certainty. Before 7

:17:28. > :17:35.o'clock tonight, towering achievement. A 36 million

:17:35. > :17:42.redevelopment brings light to one of Sheffield most iconic buildings.

:17:42. > :17:52.-- Sheffield's most iconic. What a fantastic boost it was for

:17:52. > :17:53.

:17:53. > :17:57.Yorkshire as diverse -- Yorkshire's divers. Sarah Barrow won bronze and

:17:57. > :18:00.Monique Gladding picked team GB a spot in the individual ten-metre

:18:00. > :18:07.platform 1 year after the most horrendous head injury sustained

:18:07. > :18:13.whilst driving. You have got over the psychological trauma of that,

:18:13. > :18:16.Monique, but it still must go through your mind? It has been an

:18:16. > :18:20.interesting year, but the main thing for me is to be enjoying my

:18:20. > :18:27.diving again and that is what I have had to do, to build up

:18:27. > :18:31.confidence. To be part of the team, such a fantastic team, it is our

:18:31. > :18:37.best World Cup. Here you are in action. He secured a place of the

:18:37. > :18:44.team. Your place in the Olympics is not a cure, though, is it? -- not

:18:44. > :18:49.secured. There are five or six goals that are very talented and

:18:50. > :18:55.unfortunately for me, we are very strong event. It is fortunate for

:18:55. > :19:05.Great Britain. How many turns you do in that kind of somersault? The

:19:05. > :19:08.maximum is three and a half. The boys do for the half. -- 4 1/2. It

:19:08. > :19:13.is exactly one year to the day since she had that horrific

:19:13. > :19:16.accident in Russia. Your horse that -- you're hospitalised. In Moscow

:19:16. > :19:21.three your mind as you are walking towards taking that momentous

:19:21. > :19:24.decision to do that I. Right now, there are so many things that I am

:19:25. > :19:29.focusing on technically that I have to think about to make sure that

:19:29. > :19:34.I'd is right, it is not in my head at all. I have worked hard with the

:19:34. > :19:39.psychologists. I am just making steps to make sure I am part of

:19:39. > :19:48.that team. You're in the record books, that must feel very nice,

:19:48. > :19:52.Sarah? The first ever medal we have had at a World Cup diving event.

:19:52. > :19:59.Yes, myself and my partner. And it was a strange partnership, wasn't

:19:59. > :20:03.it? We expected to be together? We have been together since 2010. It

:20:03. > :20:10.was due to injuries to other partners... Monique was my partner

:20:10. > :20:20.before! We have been together for two years. We can see a performance.

:20:20. > :20:22.

:20:23. > :20:32.It was really really could die. -- it was really, really at could die.

:20:33. > :20:33.

:20:33. > :20:38.-- a good dive. You got bronze, it was great! We were innate place

:20:38. > :20:44.just before our final dive. We knew we could get more than 70 points.

:20:44. > :20:51.To get 82, we were so happy. And I ask you about the aquatics?

:20:51. > :20:55.Everybody is raving about it. Walking into the centre, the

:20:55. > :21:05.building is amazing. They have that crowd behind you, it is

:21:05. > :21:07.

:21:07. > :21:10.unbelievable. To imagine 14 and a half 1000 that the Olympics - might

:21:10. > :21:15.imagine 14,500 at the Olympics, it will just be unbelievable. There is

:21:15. > :21:21.a better way on the ceiling. The actual centre makes it an echoing

:21:22. > :21:27.chamber. It roars down the centre. It is brilliant. Do you feel any

:21:27. > :21:32.pressure that you have got a medal in the World Cup? It is very hard

:21:32. > :21:41.for us, as well as Monique, our sport is there, but as individual

:21:41. > :21:47.drivers, we have not qualified. -- as individual divers. The trials

:21:47. > :21:50.are in June. If my partner and I do make it, we will go into the

:21:50. > :21:54.Olympics in trying to the best we can. Isn't it lovely, when you're

:21:54. > :22:01.talking about the need to be precise, that there will be exactly

:22:01. > :22:05.the same clothes? I thought genes were part of the uniform! It is

:22:05. > :22:13.just that you both have good taste. I wish you well. Then has crossed

:22:13. > :22:16.he will be there. We're sure you will. Thank you. The latest arrival

:22:16. > :22:25.at the North Anston Wildlife Centre is ruffling a few feathers. Paul

:22:25. > :22:32.has been laughing all the at the story. It is a vulture with an

:22:33. > :22:42.eight-foot wingspan. Mrs Vernon, he arrived a couple of weeks ago. --

:22:43. > :22:43.

:22:43. > :22:51.this is a turn-on. It is native to Africa, not Yorkshire. -- this is

:22:51. > :22:56.Vernon. He is causing a stir amongst the peacocks. You settle

:22:56. > :23:00.down with us all to hear. He is from South America, as opposed to

:23:00. > :23:07.central Africa, where Vernon is wrong. He is considerably smaller

:23:07. > :23:12.than Vernon. They have settled in very very well. I'm not sure what

:23:12. > :23:16.is funny about a vulture, do you? We're just trying to find out

:23:16. > :23:20.whether or not we can get down to Sheffield, because you'll be seeing

:23:20. > :23:23.some bright, colourful lights in the sky over Sheffield. We cannot

:23:23. > :23:27.quite get there at the moment. Shall we tell you what you would

:23:27. > :23:34.have seemed? It is the University of Sheffield, which is lighting up

:23:34. > :23:42.one of the most iconic buildings. It is all very exciting. That is a

:23:43. > :23:52.lovely picture of a microphone stand! Tom, cumin please! -- men,

:23:53. > :23:54.
