:00:09. > :00:12.Welcome to a special edition of Look North. Tonight we are in

:00:12. > :00:22.Halifax, the historical home of 3 Yorks - which today lost five of

:00:22. > :00:22.

:00:22. > :00:25.its own in Afghanistan. Here in Yorkshire and across the

:00:25. > :00:35.country, communities are morning. Tributes have been paid by those in

:00:35. > :00:36.

:00:36. > :00:41.power, and by ordinary people. think it is dreadful. For their

:00:41. > :00:45.families, it is awful. And so many and ones. Our thoughts are with the

:00:45. > :00:48.family and friends of these are brave is -- brave servicemen. This

:00:48. > :00:51.is the largest loss of life in a single incident since to that does

:00:51. > :00:54.Tonight we will investigate how this happened, reporting live from

:00:54. > :00:58.Helmand province, and with soldiers who have been on the front line.

:00:58. > :01:00.And, what's it like the troops about to start their tour? We hear

:01:00. > :01:05.from members of the Yorkshire regiment preparing to head to

:01:05. > :01:15.Afghanistan. Plenty of sunshine around today,

:01:15. > :01:22.

:01:22. > :01:25.but particularly heavy showers this Welcome to the programme. We are

:01:25. > :01:35.live tonight from the historical home of the regiment which has

:01:35. > :01:36.

:01:36. > :01:41.suffered such a great loss in Afghanistan. It has had a long

:01:41. > :01:45.association in this wonderful Town, which has been so proud - a 300

:01:45. > :01:50.year history. Today, five of the six British soldiers who we know

:01:50. > :01:53.died in that explosion in Helmand Province came from 3 Yorks. They

:01:53. > :02:00.had any just started their tour of duty. They flew out on Valentine's

:02:00. > :02:04.Day. They were on a mounted patrol 40 kilometres north of Lashkar Gah

:02:04. > :02:08.in the Helmand area of southern Afghanistan yesterday when their

:02:08. > :02:14.Warrior armoured fighting vehicle hit a roadside bomb. In a moment we

:02:14. > :02:24.will cross live for the latest to Afghanistan. First, Nicola Rees

:02:24. > :02:27.

:02:27. > :02:31.reports on the regiment. A week ago I was invited to

:02:31. > :02:34.Wiltshire to meet soldiers of 3 Yorks as they made their final

:02:34. > :02:38.preparations for Afghanistan. These men are due to deploy in the next

:02:38. > :02:43.few weeks, but today they face the news that five of their comrades

:02:43. > :02:47.are dead after their armoured vehicle was caught in a roadside

:02:47. > :02:50.explosion in Helmand. The soldiers were carrying out a patrol in a

:02:50. > :02:56.Warrior tank in an area around Highway One, of the main arterial

:02:56. > :03:00.route between Lashkar Gah and Kandahar. It is grim news for the

:03:00. > :03:04.three York -- 3 Yorks such as back home. 12 days ago, they told me

:03:04. > :03:09.about their fears. Any person who says they are not nervous is a liar.

:03:09. > :03:14.You have got to have nerves. Even getting shot, every day will be a

:03:14. > :03:18.risk out there. I have just had a friend who lost his brother out

:03:18. > :03:23.there. It is not good to hear of, but you were out there doing a job.

:03:23. > :03:26.It is just a case of getting on with it. A 6th soldier from first

:03:26. > :03:31.Battalion the Duke of Lancaster as is also thought to have died in the

:03:31. > :03:34.blast. If confirmed, it will take the British death toll in

:03:34. > :03:38.Afghanistan to 404. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of

:03:38. > :03:42.these brave servicemen. This would be the largest loss of life in a

:03:42. > :03:46.single incident in Afghanistan since 2006. We owe them and all of

:03:46. > :03:49.those who have lost their lives in Afghanistan an immense debt of

:03:49. > :03:53.gratitude, and our thoughts are with their family, friends and

:03:53. > :03:57.colleagues at this terrible time. It underlines the Daily dangers as

:03:58. > :04:03.soldiers still face in Afghanistan more than 10 years after the

:04:03. > :04:06.campaign began. Yesterday, an inquest at plays into the death of

:04:06. > :04:11.27-year-old and two from Whitby who was killed in a bomb blast last

:04:11. > :04:17.year. The coroner said the cause was more sophisticated explosive

:04:17. > :04:21.devices that are being used by the Taliban. Today in Wiltshire, the

:04:21. > :04:31.Battalion's flag was at half mast, and a candle was lit in memory of

:04:31. > :04:40.

:04:40. > :04:44.the soldiers. Their families have been informed.

:04:44. > :04:54.We seem to have lost communication with her. We will get back to her

:04:54. > :04:54.

:04:54. > :04:58.in a moment. The Yorkshire Regiment has paid a high price out in

:04:58. > :05:00.Afghanistan. Well, the Yorkshire Regiment has paid a high price for

:05:00. > :05:04.its service at in Afghanistan. These latest deaths bring the total

:05:04. > :05:07.number to 14 for this one regiment alone. And, of course, the history

:05:07. > :05:09.of the 3 Yorks regiment is based firmly here in Halifax. It was

:05:09. > :05:12.formed out of the Duke of Wellington's which was stationed

:05:12. > :05:15.here at Wellesley barracks. And indeed, the town every year saw

:05:15. > :05:21.troops march from the barracks to the Minster. We will be talking to

:05:21. > :05:25.the Cannon in a moment. First, this report from Emma Glasbey.

:05:25. > :05:29.The pride of Yorkshire. Formed in 2006, its main reflecting the fact

:05:29. > :05:33.that it is made up of some of the finest Yorkshire regiments,

:05:33. > :05:38.including the one reeling from the tragic news today - the third

:05:38. > :05:43.Battalion, formerly the Duke of Wellington's. A museum in Halifax

:05:43. > :05:51.now recognises the regiment's links with the town dating back more than

:05:51. > :05:57.300 years. Nine members were awarded the Victoria Cross. Adored

:05:57. > :06:03.by the town, the battalion and even had a train named after it. Since

:06:03. > :06:05.operations began in Afghanistan more than a decade ago, nine

:06:05. > :06:10.soldiers from the newly formed Yorkshire Regiment have been killed

:06:10. > :06:19.in action there. Following yesterday's explosion, that number

:06:19. > :06:23.rises to 14. In 2009, rifleman James Backhouse from Castleford was

:06:23. > :06:27.killed in Helmand province. He died in a explosion alongside four of

:06:27. > :06:33.his fellow soldiers and friends. Today, his mother said her thoughts

:06:33. > :06:38.are with the families of those killed in Kandahar last night.

:06:38. > :06:43.take that news in, when you first find out that your son has been

:06:43. > :06:48.killed is devastating. You're just not functioning right. It is like a

:06:48. > :06:52.fog. It is just like a dream. Not a nice drink, but you feel like

:06:52. > :06:55.you're floating and it is not really happening. It is so hard.

:06:55. > :07:00.When the soldiers of the Yorkshire Regiment parade through our towns

:07:00. > :07:08.and cities, the affection for them is always clear. Today is a

:07:08. > :07:12.reminder of the huge dangers they face.

:07:12. > :07:16.M moment, we will talk to the canon of the Minster behind me, and also

:07:16. > :07:22.a man proud to have started his military career with the Duke of

:07:22. > :07:27.Wellington's that became the third Battalion. Now, let's cross live to

:07:27. > :07:37.Kabul and our correspondent Quentin Sommerville. What do we know about

:07:37. > :07:40.

:07:40. > :07:44.this explosion? I am sorry. We are having problems.

:07:44. > :07:49.You can understand it is difficult getting that a line from Kabul.

:07:49. > :07:54.Let's now talk to our two guests. David Pinder, you are proud of your

:07:54. > :07:59.association with the Duke of Wellington's. This down lives and

:07:59. > :08:03.breathes the regiment, doesn't it? Absolutely. Halifax has always been

:08:03. > :08:07.the home of the regiment for several hundred years. I suspect

:08:08. > :08:14.for most people here, even though it is now the third Battalion the

:08:14. > :08:19.Yorkshire Regiment, it is the Duke's. It seems incredible that it

:08:19. > :08:26.is such a big tragedy for the regiment, isn't it? Regiments are

:08:26. > :08:32.not very big. To lose six, well five and unattached young chap as

:08:32. > :08:36.well, is a blow. Everybody will know everybody. Indeed, some as a

:08:36. > :08:40.joint with fathers and brothers joined. Yes, and cousins in

:08:40. > :08:44.different companies. And still continued until this day.

:08:44. > :08:53.absolutely. This was the regiment of choice. What does it mean to you

:08:53. > :08:57.to hear this news? Well, I started as a Duke back in 1965. For me it

:08:57. > :09:01.has always been the regiment I started my military career in. You

:09:01. > :09:05.stay in contact, do keep watching. I served in all the different

:09:05. > :09:11.battalions of the Yorkshire Regiment. You feel great affinity.

:09:11. > :09:15.I don't know if our camera can move towards the Cenotaph there, but

:09:15. > :09:19.those two nearest reef so there are the Duke of Wellington's and the

:09:19. > :09:27.Yorkshire Regiment. Yes, the one on the left ifs at the Duke of York

:09:27. > :09:30.regiment -- Duke of Wellington. great sense of tragedy. Bringing in

:09:30. > :09:33.now the canon of the parish church. This has always had a long

:09:33. > :09:41.association with the Duke's. There is a special chapel there, isn't

:09:41. > :09:45.there? Yes, in the Minster we have -- house the chapel for the Duke's,

:09:46. > :09:49.now the Yorkshire Regiment, and we are proud that the colours that are

:09:49. > :09:55.carried come to rest here as a safe place, where people can come and

:09:55. > :10:00.visit them. And a candle is always looked for those serving? We have a

:10:00. > :10:04.perm and candle that was let in 2009 at the beginning of the Afghan

:10:04. > :10:08.war as a constant reminder of those who are serving for their families,

:10:08. > :10:13.and for those who have lost their lives, both today and it during

:10:13. > :10:16.this conflict. Tomorrow a book of condolence will be opened. In the

:10:16. > :10:22.Minster we will have, from tomorrow onwards, a book of condolence

:10:22. > :10:26.available for people to sign. Also candles for people to light. On

:10:26. > :10:29.Sunday we will host a special service at 4pm as we remember those

:10:29. > :10:34.who have lost their lives today, and all those who have died during

:10:34. > :10:38.this conflict. This town will fill it greatly. Thank you. Back to the

:10:38. > :10:40.studio. Sorry about the technical problems

:10:41. > :10:45.there. Well, the regiment also has strong

:10:45. > :10:48.links across the region. Its regimental headquarters are in York.

:10:48. > :10:51.Indeed, the army is part of the fabric of the city. Today, the

:10:51. > :10:54.flags outside HQ were flying at half-mast. The Archbishop of York

:10:54. > :10:57.summed up that close relationship by paying tribute to those who had

:10:57. > :11:00.paid the ultimate sacrifice. He said that our soldiers were the

:11:00. > :11:03.best in the world. In the middle of York this afternoon, the tragic

:11:03. > :11:07.loss has reinforced support for the forces doing a dangerous job. But

:11:07. > :11:13.also brought up something else - a feeling that now is the time to

:11:13. > :11:16.pull out. I don't think they should be there,

:11:16. > :11:20.personally. I think it is a terrible shame. We have got family

:11:20. > :11:24.members going out shortly and it will be a big worry. I honestly

:11:24. > :11:29.don't know what for animal. I think it is dreadful, for them and their

:11:29. > :11:35.families, of course. It is awful, but so many at once. I just wish we

:11:35. > :11:39.could bring them out of the country and stop this awful war. Well, you

:11:39. > :11:45.can't fault their commitment, but it is time to get the troops back

:11:46. > :11:49.home. They have possibly done as much as they can, and now the time

:11:49. > :11:55.is to let the Afghans get on with it and look after themselves.

:11:55. > :11:59.I'm joined now from Westminster by Dan Jarvis, MP for Barnsley.

:11:59. > :12:03.I hope he managed to hear what the people in York said today. They

:12:03. > :12:07.were supporting the troops, but also said it is time to pull out.

:12:07. > :12:11.think the most important thing I want to say is that it is

:12:11. > :12:14.devastating news from Afghanistan today. Tragic for the families and

:12:14. > :12:17.incredibly tough for those who will have to continue to serve under the

:12:17. > :12:21.most difficult circumstances. I completely understand why people

:12:22. > :12:25.think now is the right time to extract our troops from Afghanistan,

:12:25. > :12:29.but the reality is that whether you think it is right or wrong to be

:12:29. > :12:33.involved, we are now committed. The right thing to do is to stick it

:12:33. > :12:38.out, continue with the mission, and get the Afghan national security

:12:38. > :12:41.forces to a point where we can safely withdraw, hopefully in 2014.

:12:41. > :12:45.Can you give me some perspective on what morale will be like for the

:12:45. > :12:49.soldiers who have only been out there for three weeks? Those

:12:49. > :12:53.soldiers who have already gone are extremely well trained, it very

:12:53. > :12:58.well equipped and highly motivated. The reality is it will be extremely

:12:59. > :13:03.tough, and they will be Feeney -- feeling Keeley the loss of their

:13:03. > :13:06.comrades. But the Yorkshire soldier has never let this country down and

:13:06. > :13:09.they will continue to do the most difficult job under the most

:13:09. > :13:13.difficult circumstances. I know that the events that have taken

:13:13. > :13:18.place over the previous 24 hours will only serve to harden the

:13:18. > :13:22.resolve to continue to do this amazingly difficult job. What help

:13:22. > :13:26.will be given to the bereaved families? All our thoughts are with

:13:27. > :13:29.the families. Sadly, in many respects, the army is now well

:13:30. > :13:34.practised in looking after those who have been bereaved. There are

:13:34. > :13:37.systems in place, but I know those will work but the reality is that

:13:37. > :13:42.families will need constant support for the coming days, weeks, months

:13:42. > :13:46.and years. It is tragic for them. It is incredibly tough as well for

:13:46. > :13:49.those soldiers who have not yet deployed, but will be deploying

:13:49. > :13:53.over the coming days and weeks. Thank you for joining us this

:13:53. > :13:58.evening. We will have more on the news from Afghanistan before the

:13:58. > :14:03.end of the programme. Before then, all the action from

:14:03. > :14:06.the promotion race with all our teams in action.

:14:06. > :14:09.Other news now, and a 25-year-old man from Doncaster has been charged

:14:09. > :14:11.in the United States with two counts of computer hacking. Ryan

:14:11. > :14:15.Ackroyd from Mexborough is one of five people charged with

:14:15. > :14:21.involvement in a wave of high- profile cyber attacks. He faces two

:14:21. > :14:23.charges, which each carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

:14:23. > :14:27.Four Remploy factories employing disabled workers across Yorkshire

:14:27. > :14:29.are to close. Staff have been protesting against the proposals,

:14:29. > :14:35.but sites in Chesterfield, Worksop, Leeds and Pontefract will close by

:14:35. > :14:37.the end of the year. About 140 jobs will be lost.

:14:37. > :14:44.The future of another 130 workers in Sheffield and Huddersfield is

:14:45. > :14:47.still being considered. Two men aged 32 and 25 have been

:14:47. > :14:56.arrested on suspicion of the murder of restaurant worker Amjad Hussain

:14:56. > :14:59.in Bradford and genuine. -- in January. Mr Hussain was found dead

:14:59. > :15:02.in his home in Undercliffe after a fire. But inquiries revealed he had

:15:02. > :15:12.died from neck injuries caused by a heavy bladed instrument. The

:15:12. > :15:13.

:15:13. > :15:16.200 jobs are to be cut at Rotherham Council. They met today to discuss

:15:17. > :15:23.the next financial year and they need to make savings of 20 million

:15:23. > :15:30.in the next year. Kirklees Council have approved

:15:30. > :15:34.plans for the development of more than 22,000 homes including one of

:15:34. > :15:40.1500 on green belt. Controversial plans were voted through after a

:15:40. > :15:44.heated meeting in Huddersfield. They include plans to open 240 Hex

:15:45. > :15:53.tears for business use, some of which could be on the green belt. -

:15:53. > :15:58.- heck tears. We have listened to those people in favour and those

:15:58. > :16:04.are objecting. They have expressed their concerns at the lack of

:16:04. > :16:09.employment land for the future. We have changed our position from

:16:09. > :16:15.35,000 houses to 22,000 houses and using 1% of the green belt to

:16:15. > :16:19.create the jobs for the future. Sport now and a cracking win for

:16:19. > :16:24.Doncaster Rovers last night. It was against another team trying

:16:24. > :16:33.to get away from the relegation zone, Nottingham Forest.

:16:33. > :16:39.The first came from the new hero who only arrived yesterday. He

:16:39. > :16:46.smacks that one in there. Kyle Bennett popped up once again.

:16:46. > :16:52.He celebrated with the manager. This could be the one that they

:16:52. > :17:01.looked back on when they turned it around. You can hear the noise that

:17:01. > :17:06.they were making, it was incredible. I really enjoyed that call from 30

:17:06. > :17:16.yards. The rest of our Football League

:17:16. > :17:20.

:17:20. > :17:27.teams were in action last night. Sheffield United are the leaders of

:17:27. > :17:34.the League One Yorkshire pack. The Blades equalised for a second time

:17:34. > :17:44.but Alex Nicholls found a gap where a defender should have been.

:17:44. > :17:44.

:17:44. > :17:48.Over to Wednesday who got off to a strong start. The Owls went on to

:17:48. > :17:55.win 4-1. Huddersfield broke through

:17:55. > :18:05.Hartlepool's resistance thanks to this class retouch and strike.

:18:05. > :18:10.

:18:10. > :18:20.It is tighter than at that at the One more match in League One and

:18:20. > :18:27.

:18:27. > :18:37.Chesterfield drew Neil to nail. -- At Hull, it was no goals there.

:18:37. > :18:48.

:18:48. > :18:54.This mess led to this goal. Rotherham's Ryan Taylor gave them a

:18:54. > :19:04.penalty and they later scored. Bradford took the lead after a fine

:19:04. > :19:05.

:19:05. > :19:10.piece of finishing. Accrington Stanley levelled to make it 1-1.

:19:10. > :19:13.Doncaster Knights, Rotherham Titans and Leeds Carnegie of a poem to

:19:13. > :19:20.start the rugby union championship play-offs this weekend. The whole

:19:20. > :19:26.region has been given great news. The City of Leeds has been chosen

:19:26. > :19:31.for one of the World Cup match venues for 2015. What we can't be

:19:31. > :19:35.sure of his which stadium it will be. It could be Headingley but it

:19:35. > :19:42.could be Elland Road. It depends on which World Cup match Leeds is

:19:42. > :19:48.allocated. France against New Zealand would be nice.

:19:48. > :19:54.Next, it is the brush up that has cost 15 million. The renovation

:19:55. > :19:57.work at Chatsworth House is complete. The rest of the

:19:57. > :20:01.scaffolding has come down and it new rooms have been opened up for

:20:01. > :20:11.the first time. We take a look in the company of the Duke of

:20:11. > :20:15.

:20:15. > :20:20.MUSIC PLAYS It is the jewel in the peak now with added sparkle.

:20:20. > :20:25.Where there was scaffold and tarpaulin, now they scheming

:20:25. > :20:31.stonework. Chatsworth hasn't been seen this way since it was built

:20:31. > :20:38.300 years away -- 300 years ago. needed to redo the pointing and

:20:38. > :20:44.clean it. Some of it needed to be recast. There was a lot of

:20:44. > :20:50.scaffolding and it took a long time to get it up. It wasn't allowed to

:20:50. > :20:55.touch the walls. Every generation has made his mark on this house.

:20:55. > :21:00.The 12th Duke is no exception. He has revealed a few secrets. If it

:21:00. > :21:05.wasn't for the visitors, we couldn't do this. We get so many

:21:05. > :21:10.visitors and their support means we can do this a necessary restoration

:21:10. > :21:14.work which we are proud of. Them masterplan hasn't just been about

:21:14. > :21:20.cleaning and repairing the fabric of this grade one of Grade 1 listed

:21:20. > :21:26.buildings. 15 million has been spent to open up new rooms. This

:21:26. > :21:33.isn't a war, it is a door into one of the guest bedrooms built for the

:21:33. > :21:38.6th Duke of Devonshire on display for the first time. For an Olympic
