:00:05. > :00:07.Welcome to Tuesday's Look North. On the programme tonight: Boys allowed
:00:07. > :00:11.- one of the country's biggest fund-raising events aimed at women
:00:11. > :00:17.allows boys up to 11 to take part after a campaign by a Chesterfield
:00:17. > :00:19.mum. We'll be finding out what you think about changing the rules for
:00:19. > :00:23.the Race For Life. Also tonight: Patrols are stepped
:00:23. > :00:27.up after a prize winning terrier is savaged by another dog in a
:00:27. > :00:37.Bradford park. And, the dream story for little
:00:37. > :00:37.
:00:37. > :00:42.girls - we meet the big girl with over 1000 My Little Ponies.
:00:42. > :00:46.And I will be here just outside Rotherham of welcoming home of
:00:46. > :00:50.world champion cyclist Ben Swift. The only problem is, he wasn't
:00:50. > :00:55.expecting anyone to be here. And, it has been a day of sunshine and
:00:55. > :01:05.showers today. There will be more showers to come this week. I will
:01:05. > :01:05.
:01:06. > :01:09.have the full forecast later in the Good evening. A mother from North
:01:09. > :01:12.Derbyshire who campaigned to allow boys to take part in a charity race
:01:12. > :01:16.aimed at women has succeeded in changing the rules across the
:01:16. > :01:19.country, as a result of her story being taken up by Look North.
:01:19. > :01:22.Claire Parker from Chesterfield wanted to run in the race with her
:01:22. > :01:26.seven-year old son Connor, but she was told only boys under five could
:01:26. > :01:36.run in the Race For Life, which raises money for cancer research.
:01:36. > :01:37.
:01:37. > :01:41.Emma Blackburn reports. Claire had always wanted to run
:01:41. > :01:45.race for life with her seven-year- old son, by her side. He was the
:01:45. > :01:49.person that help her recover from lymphoma after she was diagnosed
:01:49. > :01:54.four years ago. But this year, Cancer Research said only boys
:01:54. > :01:58.under five years old could take part, which excluded,. Clare began
:01:58. > :02:02.a campaign to change that. After talking to Look North, the rules
:02:02. > :02:06.were altered. I am over the moon. A lot of people did not think they
:02:06. > :02:11.would change the rules, so it just goes to show that when you fight
:02:11. > :02:16.for something you believe in, it can happen. Now I get to rise --
:02:16. > :02:20.race for my boy. Race For Life has been running for 18 years. Last
:02:20. > :02:24.year, they trialled allowing boys aged 11 and under to raise, but
:02:24. > :02:27.decided there was not enough interest. Now they say they have
:02:27. > :02:32.listened to Claire and got further feedback from other supporters. As
:02:32. > :02:37.a result, they have reinstated the boy's age limit to 11. We do have
:02:37. > :02:40.boys and we should not penalise -- be penalised by having boys. I am
:02:40. > :02:45.overwhelmed that I have got something changed but I feel
:02:45. > :02:49.passionate about. Race For Life whenever breaking any laws. Under
:02:49. > :02:54.the a quality act, there is an exemption for charities and some
:02:54. > :02:59.sports regarding sex discrimination. But a local solicitor says club was
:02:59. > :03:04.also within her rights to run with,. Technically she could say it is a
:03:04. > :03:09.public road and he is going to run. He may not have a number in the
:03:09. > :03:12.race. But there is support on both sides, and in these types of event,
:03:13. > :03:18.a lot of women who would not normally run a race will do this
:03:18. > :03:22.race because it is women only. Blair can now enter Chesterfield's
:03:22. > :03:26.race for live with, in June, but her campaign does not end there.
:03:26. > :03:31.She once the race to eventually include all men so she can continue
:03:31. > :03:34.taking part with all her boys. Well, we did ask to speak to Cancer
:03:34. > :03:37.Research UK but were told they weren't available for an interview.
:03:37. > :03:44.However, we have had lots of response about this story on our
:03:44. > :03:49.Facebook Page and by email. One email says the race should not
:03:49. > :03:54.exclude people who only want to help cope with bereavement or shows
:03:54. > :03:59.support for a loved one's battle with cancer. Another says, "thank
:03:59. > :04:04.goodness someone has done something to include men for once. It is a
:04:04. > :04:09.race for life after all. This is an example of blatant discrimination".
:04:09. > :04:13.Wayne Gregory says, "as someone who has lost many family and friends I
:04:13. > :04:18.have always wanted to take part in these events but have been refused
:04:18. > :04:21.because I am a man. It is all very well allowing young boys to run the
:04:21. > :04:26.race, but I would have thought cancer research would want as many
:04:26. > :04:31.people as possible to raise money". Another says, "what a ridiculous
:04:31. > :04:36.thing to say and do. I agree it should be for all but not for
:04:36. > :04:38.sexism reasons, but to raise more money". To keep your comments --
:04:38. > :04:41.comments coming in. Next tonight, Look North has learnt
:04:41. > :04:44.that Yorkshire's water could be used to help drought-stricken parts
:04:44. > :04:46.of the south and east. For years, the giant Ladybower Reservoir in
:04:46. > :04:49.the Peak District has supplied Sheffield. But now, Yorkshire Water
:04:49. > :04:52.is in talks with companies from regions where there are hosepipe
:04:52. > :05:00.bans about helping them by using the water stored here. Nicola Rees
:05:00. > :05:05.reports. So far, Yorkshire has escaped a
:05:05. > :05:10.hosepipe ban. In fact, our reservoirs are 90% full and people
:05:10. > :05:15.like Carol Marsden near Doncaster or find that important. My daughter
:05:15. > :05:20.is getting married in August and we want to get the garden looking nice.
:05:20. > :05:23.If we had a hosepipe ban, it would be terrible. But in the North
:05:23. > :05:28.Nottinghamshire town of Retford, a hosepipe ban is already in full
:05:28. > :05:32.force. People here are supplied by Anglian Water, and their reserves
:05:32. > :05:35.are seriously low. In a bid to address that problem, today,
:05:35. > :05:40.Anglian Water is in talks with neighbouring suppliers Yorkshire
:05:40. > :05:44.Water and Severn Trent. They are planning to trade water to help the
:05:44. > :05:47.worst-hit areas. At the moment, Yorkshire Water taking a certain
:05:48. > :05:51.amount of water from the Ladybower Reservoir. If they did not need
:05:51. > :05:55.quite as much for their area, we could release that into the River
:05:55. > :06:00.Derwent. It may be possible later in the year to release more water
:06:00. > :06:03.and help Anglian out even more. This enormous reservoir in the Peak
:06:03. > :06:08.District is owned by Severn Trent, but also supplies 50 billion litres
:06:08. > :06:12.a day to Yorkshire Water customers in nearby Sheffield as part of a
:06:12. > :06:16.long-standing agreement between the two companies. Yorkshire Water told
:06:16. > :06:19.us that in the spirit of collaboration, they are now
:06:19. > :06:24.considering giving up their supplies from this reservoir to
:06:24. > :06:28.help other drought-stricken areas. The question is, could Yorkshire
:06:28. > :06:31.cope without the Ladybower Reservoir? The talks are at an
:06:31. > :06:35.early stage, and Yorkshire Water says maintaining supplies here is
:06:35. > :06:40.still the priority. But, if the move goes ahead, it would not be
:06:40. > :06:43.the first time that one region has helped another. In the mid-90s,
:06:43. > :06:47.Yorkshire's supplies ran so low that convoys of water tankers were
:06:47. > :06:53.sent in from Northumberland. Almost two decades later, it seems
:06:53. > :07:02.Yorkshire is being called upon to return the favour.
:07:02. > :07:06.Later in the programme: Are the Bradford Bulls back in business?
:07:06. > :07:12.Rugby League fans dig deep but have they raised the 500,000 needed to
:07:12. > :07:16.keep the club alive? Patrols have been stepped up in a
:07:16. > :07:19.Bradford park after a prize winning dog was savaged by a dog resembling
:07:19. > :07:21.a pit bull terrier. The four-year- old Bedlington Terrier was left
:07:21. > :07:25.with horrific injuries after the incident at Victoria Park in
:07:26. > :07:35.Oakenshaw. Small children were playing nearby at the time. You may
:07:36. > :07:38.
:07:38. > :07:42.find some of the pictures in Ian White's report upsetting.
:07:42. > :07:49.This is my dog, who has been attacked. She is not herself at all.
:07:49. > :07:51.She is not happy. Bradford dog lover Paul Rhodes showed me her
:07:51. > :07:56.award winning Bedlington Terrier, now recovering back at home after
:07:56. > :08:00.an horrific attack by a pit bull type dog that was not on a lead.
:08:00. > :08:06.took one look at her and in a split-second it grabbed hold of her
:08:06. > :08:11.shoulder and it will stir in the air several times. -- tossed her in
:08:11. > :08:16.the air. Then it lay on top of that. The dog was rushed to an emergency
:08:16. > :08:22.vet and spent the night on a drip. She has got big cuts and bruises on
:08:22. > :08:26.her robes and legs. The four-year- old dog is normally a confident
:08:26. > :08:33.companion who has taken numerous prizes around Yorkshire at dog
:08:33. > :08:37.shows. She has won at 16 results, a gold medal, and she has done three
:08:37. > :08:41.exams in he'll work. Within a split second, she is now going to be
:08:41. > :08:46.scarred for work. This savage attack happened in Victoria Park at
:08:46. > :08:51.around 5pm on Sunday evening. It is a popular area with dog-walkers,
:08:51. > :08:56.and children were playing behind me here. If you have a big dog, just
:08:56. > :09:02.be in mind that that dog can do a lot of damage in a short space of
:09:02. > :09:06.time. That is to consider putting it on a lead if you are around
:09:06. > :09:12.other dogs and children. A experts so well trained dogs should rarely
:09:12. > :09:18.pose a problem, but did advise pet owners: however distressing it may
:09:18. > :09:22.seem, resist getting in the middle of those dogs because we know that
:09:22. > :09:25.they can cause severe injury to people as well as other dogs.
:09:25. > :09:29.man who was with the dog that attacked this terrier left the
:09:29. > :09:33.scene without leaving his details. Bradford council says it will be
:09:33. > :09:36.stepping up dog warden patrols in the area. In other news now, and
:09:36. > :09:39.the Respect Party is to fight a third of the seats being contested
:09:39. > :09:43.at next month's local elections in Bradford. It is the biggest
:09:43. > :09:45.campaign ever fought by the party in a northern city. After the
:09:45. > :09:48.victory of George Galloway at the Bradford West by-election, Respect
:09:48. > :09:51.said it would target Bradford at the local government elections. It
:09:51. > :09:56.is currently one of the most closely contested councils in
:09:56. > :09:58.Yorkshire. Labour runs it but is one short of an overall majority.
:09:58. > :10:01.In the recent past, the Conservatives have also been in
:10:01. > :10:05.power in Bradford with the Liberal Democrats the third largest party
:10:05. > :10:08.in the city. Tributes have been paid to a
:10:08. > :10:11.Yorkshire soldier who died more than two months after being injured
:10:11. > :10:15.in an explosion in Afghanistan. 26- year-old Corporal Jack Stanley from
:10:15. > :10:23.Todmarden served with the Queen's Royal Hussars. He died at the Queen
:10:23. > :10:26.Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham on Sunday.
:10:26. > :10:30.Police want to trace these two men in connection with an alleged
:10:30. > :10:34.serious sexual assault in Sheffield last October. A 48-year-old woman
:10:34. > :10:37.was allegedly raped after meeting the men in a city centre bar. Both
:10:37. > :10:39.are described as black and of slim build, one with a defined goatee
:10:39. > :10:44.beard. Anyone with information should contact South Yorkshire
:10:44. > :10:48.Police. Police are growing increasingly
:10:48. > :10:51.concerned for the safety of an 82- year-old man who has gone missing
:10:51. > :10:56.from his home in Rotherham. Ernest Lancaster, who has Alzheimers, was
:10:56. > :11:02.last seen in the Brinsworth area on Saturday afternoon. Police say he
:11:02. > :11:05.is vulnerable and taking medication for a heart complaint.
:11:05. > :11:08.A special service to remember Caroline Stuttle who was murdered
:11:08. > :11:11.in Australia ten years ago is taking place at York Minster this
:11:11. > :11:15.evening. The nineteen-year-old died after being robbed and pushed off a
:11:15. > :11:19.bridge in Bundaburg by a drug addict. Her killer, Ian Previte,
:11:19. > :11:29.was sentenced to life imprisonment. Her family and friends will light
:11:29. > :11:32.
:11:32. > :11:37.candles in memory of Caroline. It is our tame year anniversary. We
:11:37. > :11:40.felt it was important for people to remember Caroline. So many people
:11:40. > :11:45.have been so supportive over the years, we thought it was a good
:11:45. > :11:49.idea to all get together and light a candle, and may be light a candle
:11:49. > :11:53.in memory of those who have lost people.
:11:53. > :11:57.And part of the legacy of Caroline is now that this family offers
:11:57. > :12:01.advice worldwide to other backpackers. Their big message is
:12:01. > :12:05.that ethnic -- anyone should try to take your handbag or backpack, let
:12:05. > :12:08.it go. Before 7pm: We're live in Rotherham as Yorkshire's latest
:12:08. > :12:12.cycling superstar comes home with a clutch of medals from the world
:12:12. > :12:22.championships in Australia. And, we meet the big girl with a
:12:22. > :12:24.
:12:25. > :12:29.little girl's passion for the toy What was your favourite child had
:12:29. > :12:33.toy? I collected football memorabilia. I
:12:34. > :12:38.used to have all the teams. My Little Ponies was a little after
:12:38. > :12:42.my time. Only a little! Sport, and the Bradford Bulls have
:12:42. > :12:46.today announced that they have raised the 500,000 they need to
:12:46. > :12:51.stay temporarily in business. That is only part of the story. They
:12:51. > :12:54.still need to raise another 500,000 to avoid going into
:12:54. > :13:00.administration. A local MP has raised concerns about the true
:13:00. > :13:03.scale of financial problems at the club.
:13:03. > :13:06.Bulls fans watching their team against Salford in March will not
:13:06. > :13:10.have realised the financial problems behind the scenes. The
:13:10. > :13:16.club announced they had just weeks to raise 1 million if they were to
:13:16. > :13:21.stay in business. They said that things had come to a head. Their
:13:21. > :13:25.bank, RBS, said they had no choice but to reduce the club's overdraft
:13:25. > :13:29.facility following their sale of the least of the stadium to pay
:13:29. > :13:34.debts to the Rugby Football League. The bowls so be needed to raise
:13:34. > :13:38.500,000 within to avoid going out of business. They fell just so --
:13:38. > :13:42.short, but were given an extension until midnight yesterday, which
:13:42. > :13:49.they today confirmed they have achieved. This has given them a
:13:49. > :13:54.window of around 10 - 12 weeks to raise the next 500,000. Public
:13:54. > :13:58.donations and auction of memorabilia and a crowd of nearly
:13:58. > :14:02.21,000 for their win against Leeds rhinos has helped achieve their
:14:02. > :14:12.first target. In a statement issued today, their chief executive has
:14:12. > :14:20.
:14:20. > :14:24.My concerns are the money has come from people who are hard-working. I
:14:24. > :14:28.need a sustainable long-term future for the club. I hope we can find
:14:28. > :14:33.answers to some of the questions about the situation with the bank,
:14:33. > :14:38.where we are with the tax bill, and what happened with the Rugby League.
:14:38. > :14:46.Then people can understand problems. Yesterday, Bradford Bulls recorded
:14:46. > :14:50.a win. As they look to raise a further 500,000, a quick way to
:14:50. > :14:56.achieve this might be to sell player assets. It remains unclear
:14:56. > :14:59.how deep the financial problems actually are.
:14:59. > :15:02.Football now, and do you understand what is going on at Huddersfield?
:15:02. > :15:05.Or Leeds for that matter? They are both losing and in Leeds' case,
:15:05. > :15:08.they have blown their play-off hopes. Stand up Wednesday on a
:15:08. > :15:10.brilliant run. And over at Rotherham - call him colourful,
:15:10. > :15:16.certainly controversial, and you have summed up the Millers' new
:15:16. > :15:26.manager to a tee. Steve Evans. Well, we will get the round-up in just a
:15:26. > :15:31.
:15:31. > :15:36.moment with Paul Ogden. First we can speak to him in Rotherham.
:15:36. > :15:41.A very simple statement to make. Ben Swift is a world champion
:15:41. > :15:46.cyclist. We knew he was a start but he has just come back from
:15:46. > :15:51.Australia with three medals at we will talk to him very shortly. The
:15:51. > :16:01.answer to your questions, why has Steve Evans gone to Rotherham? It
:16:01. > :16:07.
:16:07. > :16:14.is full of lovely people, that his Rotherham United made headlines
:16:14. > :16:20.over the weekend by enticing star A -- Steve Evans to be their manager.
:16:20. > :16:27.He will have liked what he saw from the stands. At a 1-0 win means he
:16:28. > :16:31.can seriously push for the play- offs. Bradford City's defeat at
:16:31. > :16:35.Shrewsbury showed a candidate for the ugly his goal of the whole
:16:35. > :16:41.season. It was the only one of the match, leaving Bradford are still
:16:41. > :16:44.nervous about their League status. One division up, Chesterfield would
:16:44. > :16:51.have been condemned to dropping out of League One of they failed
:16:51. > :16:55.against Wycombe. They are one of 4- 0 instead. Are they still need
:16:55. > :16:59.victories in every one of their four final matches. Sheffield
:16:59. > :17:08.Wednesday dominated the League One Promotions story over Easter.
:17:08. > :17:13.Yesterday 3-0 win lifted them into second spot, thanks to goals from
:17:13. > :17:18.Nadine. The match at Rochelle could cause another swap over. The Hull
:17:18. > :17:23.City is obsessed for the battle for second place. Fans camped out
:17:23. > :17:27.overnight last night to get a one a ticket for the final away match at
:17:27. > :17:31.Brentford. Huddersfield Town were the victims of Wednesday's strength
:17:31. > :17:35.on Saturday. We were stripped -- suffering the after-effects at
:17:35. > :17:40.Bournemouth. They were stifled upfront, vulnerable at the back,
:17:40. > :17:46.they lost to Ivan 0. That is a habit they need to cut out if they
:17:46. > :17:51.are to contest the play-offs. Whoever goes to the Championship,
:17:51. > :17:55.we can now assume that Doncaster Rovers will not be there. They are
:17:55. > :17:59.not down yet after yesterday tour from one defeat to Burnley but will
:17:59. > :18:06.be if they do not win against Portsmouth. Even Barnsley cannot be
:18:06. > :18:11.sure of their status. The point we earnt at Blackpool was a good
:18:11. > :18:17.investment. David Perkins redirected to the shot for a goal.
:18:17. > :18:26.Leeds United suffered a sending off. They were beaten 2 Ivan 0 up by
:18:26. > :18:33.Derby County. It was said there will never be another Leeds United
:18:33. > :18:38.or like this. Still plenty of turns left in the
:18:38. > :18:43.football season. One thing we can be certain of, as I said, here is a
:18:43. > :18:46.very big party. It is for Ben Swift who has come back from at the Track
:18:46. > :18:50.Cycling World Championships with three medals, gold in the scratch
:18:50. > :18:55.race, two Sylvans, too. Actually, he thought he was coming home to a
:18:55. > :18:59.quiet night in with his girlfriend and family. A surprise welcome with
:18:59. > :19:05.60 people from a Rotherham. What a welcome. It was unbelievable. It
:19:05. > :19:09.was a big surprise. I really appreciated it. I suspect you are
:19:09. > :19:13.very well loved around here. I do not want to embarrass you! There is
:19:13. > :19:18.a tight sense of community. I have a great bunch of family and friends.
:19:18. > :19:22.They support the 100%. It is fantastic to come back to this.
:19:22. > :19:27.rest of Yorkshire and the UK are wondering where your career will go.
:19:27. > :19:32.We saw you in the Tour de France. More people watch that in Yorkshire
:19:32. > :19:37.than ever before. You are back on the track now winning medals.
:19:37. > :19:41.both, so back to the road after this. There is a race in three
:19:41. > :19:45.weeks' time. Then we will decide where the Olympics. That fantastic
:19:45. > :19:50.win in the scratch race and all the other things you achieved, where
:19:50. > :19:55.does that say? Is that a secondary thing? 4th a bit. It is a massive
:19:56. > :20:01.achievement for myself. I have been after for a long time. Now I have
:20:01. > :20:06.to switch my focus back to the road. You are a workaholic. You of going
