:00:15. > :00:18.Hello. Welcome to the programme. Of A Yorkshire village reacts to

:00:34. > :00:39.horses in the race and vow never to We'll be speaking to a top vet

:00:39. > :00:43.about injuries at Aintree. Look North unveils a confidential report

:00:43. > :00:46.about the effectiveness of drug treatment centres. And giantkillers

:00:46. > :00:53.Fev land the prize draw of Wigan in the Challenge Cup after seeing off

:00:53. > :00:57.Superleague's Castleford Tigers. It has been a fine start to the wake.

:00:57. > :01:07.This was taken near Temple Newsome in the afternoon. But there is some

:01:07. > :01:13.

:01:13. > :01:16.But first tonight the man who trained According to Pete - the

:01:16. > :01:19.North Yorkshire horse killed at Saturday's Grand National - has

:01:19. > :01:22.said it was a freak accident. The horse suffered a broken shoulder at

:01:22. > :01:25.Bechers Brook and had to be put down. His owners from Helperby near

:01:25. > :01:28.Thirsk have said they'll never enter another horse in the race. In

:01:28. > :01:32.a moment we'll be speaking to a vet who specialises in treating

:01:32. > :01:42.racehorses but first Ian White has this. Everything all right with

:01:42. > :01:47.Pete? It was supposed to be a day of celebration. The has one has a

:01:47. > :01:52.right chance. But for the owners of According to Pete, Saturday's Grand

:01:52. > :01:57.National ended in tragedy and upset, as a horse suffered a broken

:01:57. > :02:00.shoulder when it has brought down by another horse when it was

:02:00. > :02:04.jumping than the Tories Berger's book for the second time go stop

:02:05. > :02:11.According to Pete's trainer Martin Jefferson was back of the stable's

:02:11. > :02:21.today. He said there was no other option but to put Dorstone. When

:02:21. > :02:22.

:02:22. > :02:32.they break bones like that they have got to be humanely destroyed.

:02:32. > :02:35.

:02:35. > :02:38.He has been a dream to own. We wish that we still had him. We do.

:02:38. > :02:42.Stuart's Gold Cup winner, Synchronised, was also badly

:02:42. > :02:45.injured and had to be destroyed. The deaths bring the number of

:02:45. > :02:49.horses killed and the Grand National and the last 50 years, to

:02:49. > :02:55.36. And once again there are questions about how safe the race

:02:55. > :02:59.is. They have done a lot at the course and the jumps are good, the

:02:59. > :03:05.only fault we can think of is that there are too many horses, 40,

:03:05. > :03:09.which is maybe too many. Follow laws of racing question whether

:03:09. > :03:14.changing the Grand National would do any good. If you change that it

:03:14. > :03:20.would not be the National. It was a very big field. 40 is a lot of

:03:20. > :03:26.courses. I know that horses do enjoy tackling these courses but

:03:26. > :03:29.the Grand National in particular is very severe. At Aintree, course

:03:29. > :03:39.officials have promised a thorough review of everything that happened

:03:39. > :03:43.in the race, that cost According to Pete his life. It is a sad fact of

:03:43. > :03:46.racing that horses are put down after suffering from an injury.

:03:46. > :03:54.Earlier I spoke to Alastair Kay, an equine surgeon at Minster

:03:54. > :03:59.Veterinary Practice in Poppleton near York to ask him why.

:03:59. > :04:06.biggest problem is the type of fracture or the loss sustains.

:04:06. > :04:11.Certainly, different parts of the leg, you can treat horses back to

:04:11. > :04:15.breeding are racing, but with the fractures we heard about at the

:04:15. > :04:18.weekend, these tend to be higher on the leg and it is such a heavy

:04:18. > :04:25.animal that is physically impossible to reconstruct that part

:04:25. > :04:32.of the leg. Why can you not take the weight of the loss of the leg?

:04:32. > :04:37.There is a reason, that you cannot sling your horse off the ground.

:04:38. > :04:41.Our absolutely. One of the biggest problems with slinging dos is that

:04:41. > :04:46.they developed problems with the lungs and pneumonia, and the

:04:46. > :04:52.temperament, many horses will not tolerate being placed in a swing

:04:52. > :04:57.because they might have got less control over what they do. You love

:04:57. > :05:05.dossers that UK, are you any favour of the ban on horse racing, as some

:05:05. > :05:08.have suggested? -- you love the horses that you treat. With all

:05:08. > :05:13.racing and training and with athletes were going to see it at

:05:13. > :05:16.the Olympics, we have got fine- tuned athletes, and some of those

:05:16. > :05:21.will have injuries during the competition and we have to take

:05:21. > :05:26.those into account, and try to come out with the best result for the

:05:26. > :05:36.owners, trainers, horses themselves and the general public. But racing

:05:36. > :05:38.

:05:38. > :05:45.should continue? Absolutely, yes. The Labour peer Lord Ahmed of

:05:45. > :05:48.Rotherham has been suspended from the Labour party. Labour say he is

:05:48. > :05:51.under investigation after a report in a newspaper in Pakistan that he

:05:51. > :05:54.was offering a reward for the arrests of President Obama and

:05:54. > :05:57.George Bush. The comments were reportedly a reaction to the news

:05:57. > :06:00.that the US has offered a $10 million reward for the capture of a

:06:00. > :06:03.terrorist leader. Well, Lord Ahmed joins us live now from our

:06:03. > :06:05.Westminster studio. If you did not to say these words, these are an

:06:05. > :06:10.incredible misinterpretation, so tell us, clearly, what you said.

:06:10. > :06:16.spoke about investment in this particular town by people from

:06:16. > :06:21.Britain, I talk about that. It was a 40 minute speech. If you want me

:06:22. > :06:26.to do that I am happy to do it, but what I did mention was the legal

:06:26. > :06:30.war in Iraq and the war crimes committed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

:06:30. > :06:36.I talked about the International Criminal Court and people

:06:36. > :06:41.responsible for war crimes, whether African, Asian or Western leaders

:06:41. > :06:45.they should be treated equally and be brought to justice. You have a

:06:45. > :06:51.reputation for seeing things as they are, should you not have been

:06:51. > :07:01.more careful bearing in mind where you were? I was born in Pakistan.

:07:01. > :07:02.

:07:02. > :07:08.People still very sensitive about lots of issues. -- people are still.

:07:08. > :07:11.The Pakistani courts have found a terrorist not guilty with all the

:07:11. > :07:20.charges put to him. I do not have anything to do with the man. I do

:07:20. > :07:25.not support him, I have not met him, but you have to be sensitive in

:07:25. > :07:32.what you say. There are many young people in Bradford, in Yorkshire,

:07:32. > :07:38.who feel angry because of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. A but the

:07:38. > :07:42.Labour Party clearly do not agree. How are you going to re-establish

:07:42. > :07:47.your reputation, that you did not say these words about George Bush

:07:47. > :07:56.and President Obama? I respect the Labour Party and abide by all of

:07:56. > :08:02.its rules. When I came back from Pakistan, I landed, and immediately,

:08:02. > :08:07.I phoned up Baroness Royle, and I said to her that I had not only

:08:07. > :08:14.been misquoted and taken out of context but their were lives, I

:08:14. > :08:24.never mentioned President Obama. I am happy to appear before any

:08:24. > :08:27.

:08:27. > :08:31.committee. I have been a Labour Party member for 37 years. Later on

:08:31. > :08:41.Look North: The disabled man who can't find a train to take him and

:08:41. > :08:41.

:08:41. > :08:43.his scooter to meet the queen. Next tonight, BBC Look North has

:08:43. > :08:46.obtained a confidential report which shows drug addicts are

:08:46. > :08:56.spending years at a treatment centre in Halifax with limited

:08:56. > :08:57.

:08:57. > :09:00.chances of recovery. The study, by Huddersfield University, looked at

:09:00. > :09:02.the outcomes for heroin and crack cocaine users at Calderdale

:09:02. > :09:05.Substance Misuse Service. Experts say the results are disappointing

:09:05. > :09:10.but reflect a national problem. Our Health Correspondent Jamie Coulson

:09:10. > :09:17.reports. It took away his life, it took away his social interaction

:09:17. > :09:22.with his family and the use of the heroine eventually killed him.

:09:22. > :09:27.Marie Richardson lost a son, Keith, at the age of 33, from a methadone

:09:27. > :09:35.overdose after years of battling addiction. I was hoped that Keith

:09:35. > :09:45.would get better and stop using drugs but in the last two years and

:09:45. > :09:47.

:09:47. > :09:52.prayed that God would take him.. The addiction had blighted his

:09:52. > :09:55.adult life. Now, Look North has got hold of a report carried out by

:09:55. > :10:00.Huddersfield University looking at what happens to other people who

:10:00. > :10:06.come here, looking for help, and the results make interesting

:10:06. > :10:11.reading. It found the majority of people continue to use heroin and

:10:11. > :10:16.crack cocaine and every year on the treatment programme raises the odds

:10:16. > :10:21.of recovery by just 7%, and that it would take 10 years before the

:10:21. > :10:26.chances of recovery even double. The report concludes that, whilst

:10:26. > :10:32.the services good at keeping people in treatment, those gains and

:10:32. > :10:41.recovery are very slow. In those two years, someone will have taken

:10:41. > :10:47.an overdose, or taking suicide, in that 10 years. 10 years is too long.

:10:47. > :10:52.It is at the same time horrifying and not surprising. Those results,

:10:52. > :10:56.people not getting off drugs, but at the same time, called ordeal is

:10:56. > :11:06.not an exception, it is symbolic of what is going on in the rest of the

:11:06. > :11:13.

:11:13. > :11:23.country. -- called the dial. -- Calderdale. The NHS in Calderdale

:11:23. > :11:24.

:11:24. > :11:29.But, for Anne Marie, these findings confirm the fears that she has long

:11:29. > :11:39.held. So on thing needs to be done. The treatment for these people is

:11:39. > :11:41.

:11:41. > :11:44.too long. It is people's like you are talking about. -- lives. We're

:11:44. > :11:48.joined now by Dr Michael Ross who spent many years working with drug

:11:48. > :11:53.users. You had a rather different approach. Some would say that you

:11:53. > :11:59.were quite behalf with your patients. I did not feel that I was

:11:59. > :12:02.tough, rather, that I was rigorous, and they would enter into detailed

:12:03. > :12:11.discussions with the patient to find out exactly what they wanted

:12:11. > :12:18.to do, to help them achieve that. We will try to get back to Dr Ross,

:12:19. > :12:28.but at the moment, we're going to have to leave that. We have some

:12:29. > :12:29.

:12:29. > :12:32.other Newswatch unit. -- news for you now. A man and woman have

:12:32. > :12:35.appeared in court today charged with the murder of their baby girl.

:12:35. > :12:38.Krystal Davison was just seven weeks old when she died in the

:12:38. > :12:40.early hours of Friday. Today her parents Jessica Marie Hopkinson and

:12:40. > :12:43.Lee Michael Davison from Pontefract made a brief appearance at the

:12:43. > :12:45.town's magistrates court. Olivia Richwald was there. Only seven

:12:45. > :12:49.weeks old, this is the baby girl from Pontefract, who died in the

:12:49. > :12:58.early hours of Friday, her parents now charged with her mother. --

:12:58. > :13:04.murder. Doctors were unable to save the baby's life and she died in the

:13:04. > :13:08.early as a trader. Today, Jessica Hopkinson and the baby's father,

:13:08. > :13:13.Lee Davison, made their first brief appearance at the town's

:13:13. > :13:17.magistrates' court. The couple were visibly upset as they were lead

:13:17. > :13:22.into the court by a security guard. The couple did not acknowledge each

:13:22. > :13:26.other but spoke quietly to confirm their name and address. The hearing

:13:26. > :13:31.lasted less than five minutes. Magistrates said the case to Leeds

:13:31. > :13:41.Crown Court, where it will be held on Wednesday, which will be miss

:13:41. > :13:44.

:13:44. > :13:47.Hopkins and's 19th Party. -- Miss Hopkinson. The new MP for Bradford

:13:47. > :13:50.West George Galloway has been sworn into the House of Commons this

:13:50. > :13:53.afternoon Galloway who represents the Respect party, won a shock

:13:53. > :13:55.victory in a bye-election two weeks ago with the majority of more than

:13:55. > :14:01.ten thousand votes. It follows the resignation of Labour's Marsha

:14:01. > :14:04.Singh. The publisher of the Halifax Courier and Scarborough Evening

:14:04. > :14:07.News has announced that the newspapers will go from daily to

:14:07. > :14:10.weekly editions later this year. Johnston press says the move is

:14:10. > :14:13.part of a relaunch of all of its regional papers. The company, which

:14:13. > :14:22.also produces the Leeds-based Yorkshire Post and Evening Post,

:14:22. > :14:26.says more changes are likely. We can go back to Dr Michael Ross, who

:14:26. > :14:36.pioneered different kinds of work with drug users. You said you had a

:14:36. > :14:41.

:14:41. > :14:45.You describe it as brutal. What I tried to do was provide a rigorous

:14:45. > :14:51.and detailed approach, so that by sitting down with the patient, we

:14:51. > :14:57.could work out a plan that would work for the patient, and find the

:14:57. > :15:02.help the patient needed to become drugs free and also medication free

:15:02. > :15:10.as soon as possible. You believe too many people are automatically

:15:10. > :15:16.put on to methadone, which is a legal substitute. I did not quite

:15:16. > :15:22.hear that. Methadone has a place and is important as a medication,

:15:22. > :15:27.but it is not the only one. It is appropriate for some people, for

:15:27. > :15:34.some people some of the time. But patients need to move on. They want

:15:34. > :15:40.to move on. Most of from your audience will be surprised to hear

:15:40. > :15:44.that most addicts hate being an addict. They say they are sick of

:15:44. > :15:49.it and they want to stop being dependent on substances and they

:15:49. > :15:56.want help to come off street drugs and then prescribed medication.

:15:56. > :16:02.Very briefly, the difference in your treatment was that you tested

:16:02. > :16:07.your patients to make sure they were clean. Absolutely. It is the

:16:07. > :16:16.mainstay of treatment. I am very disappointed to see that government

:16:16. > :16:21.policy does not mention testing in the extensive guidelines. To try to

:16:21. > :16:28.treat drug dependency patients without testing is like offering a

:16:28. > :16:33.similar service without a set of scales. Thank you.

:16:34. > :16:40.A disabled man from Keighley is asking for better access on trains

:16:40. > :16:45.for people who use motorised scooters. David Lamb was badly

:16:45. > :16:51.injured and was invited to a royal garden party, but he cannot take

:16:51. > :17:00.his scooter on the train. A special delivery for David and

:17:00. > :17:05.Geraldine Lambe. An invitation from the Queen to a Diamond garden party.

:17:05. > :17:15.I got a call from a friend out of the blue about going to the garden

:17:15. > :17:16.

:17:16. > :17:20.party. I asked my wife if she wanted to go. I certainly did.

:17:20. > :17:25.bid was injured in an industrial accident and spent months in

:17:25. > :17:31.hospital after receiving multiple injuries from a fall and he had a

:17:31. > :17:37.leg amputated. He relies on a powered scooter to get about.

:17:37. > :17:43.a way of getting around. I cannot walk so far with two sticks.

:17:43. > :17:48.couple plan to travel by train to London, taking the scooter. But

:17:48. > :17:54.there is a problem. The scooter is allowed on the train between Leeds

:17:54. > :18:00.and London, but not on local services between Keighley and Leeds.

:18:00. > :18:05.There should be something. Northern Rail says it cannot carry scooters

:18:05. > :18:11.unless they can be folded up and carried on as luggage. David is not

:18:11. > :18:18.the only disabled person. There are a lot of disabled people. It has

:18:18. > :18:22.got my back-up. I do not think it should be like that. Northern Rail

:18:22. > :18:29.said there are valid reasons why they cannot allow motorised

:18:29. > :18:34.scooters. They are designed to go on the road, shopping centres, but

:18:34. > :18:39.they are not designed to go up the steep ramps on to train, especially

:18:39. > :18:44.the incline at the top of the ramp, where they tend to get stuck.

:18:44. > :18:51.couple hoped to make the date with royalty, but they are exploring

:18:51. > :18:57.alternative means of transport. Sport. I love to go to the Keepmoat

:18:57. > :19:01.Stadium, home of Doncaster, it is a friendly club. On Saturday, I

:19:01. > :19:07.witnessed the worst refereeing performance I have seen. It is not

:19:07. > :19:12.easy. When I need help, I use these. This is the first example. He was

:19:12. > :19:20.tripped outside, I know he dived inside. But there is where the trip

:19:20. > :19:25.took place and penalty was given. The first bad call. I can show you

:19:25. > :19:29.the next incident. The cross is good. Nothing wrong with this. But,

:19:29. > :19:37.the goalkeeper is under pressure and the guy in there, with his

:19:37. > :19:44.hands, effectively throws it into the back of the net. I understand

:19:44. > :19:49.why Doncaster got upset. They were bad calls, but the result did not

:19:49. > :19:55.lead to relegation. Some say because of the signing of star

:19:55. > :19:59.players from Willie McKay. Such as El-Hadji Diouf. They have no

:19:59. > :20:07.passion for Doncaster. The chairman defended his decision to bring

:20:07. > :20:13.Willie McKay into the club. It if you look at the last season when we

:20:13. > :20:18.won a couple of games in 25, we needed a radical change. It was a

:20:18. > :20:24.last throw of the dice. I knew we would go down anyway. Let's give it

:20:24. > :20:31.to go. We will lose money and have to start again. I used to aspire to

:20:31. > :20:35.get into League One when I was in the Conference League. That is why

:20:35. > :20:42.we liked him, he tells it as cities. Willie McKay is controversial.

:20:42. > :20:49.Today he added another dimension to what is going on. Suggesting the

:20:49. > :20:59.chairman may walk away. I feel sorry for the supporters, I feel

:20:59. > :21:03.really sorry for John Ryan. I hope he stays with the club. It may not

:21:03. > :21:07.happen. We know Doncaster will be in League

:21:07. > :21:12.One next season, will the Sheffield clubs pass them in the opposite

:21:12. > :21:16.direction? United increased their advantage over Wednesday on

:21:16. > :21:22.Saturday. It looked like Sheffield United

:21:22. > :21:28.might slip up in a bid for automatic promotion. Kevin Lisbie

:21:28. > :21:37.put Leyton Orient ahead. But then Williamson got them back to level.

:21:37. > :21:43.And Michael Doyle found the bottom corner. Ched Evans added a third.

:21:43. > :21:49.Sheffield Wednesday could not keep up the chase. They conceded early

:21:49. > :21:53.on the way it Colchester. A had to make do with a single point, so

:21:53. > :21:58.they are four points behind United. Chesterfield have been trawling

:21:58. > :22:05.along the bottom this season. They looked like they might finally sink

:22:05. > :22:11.when Hartlepool went ahead. But they took three points to keep them

:22:11. > :22:21.afloat for now. Huddersfield's slide carried on and they are 5th

:22:21. > :22:26.

:22:26. > :22:32.after losing at Preston. They were for -- Cardiff got a 1-0

:22:32. > :22:37.win. Bradford were impressive against Northampton. It was down to

:22:37. > :22:43.one man that sealed them a 3-1 victory. Roth room couldn't build

:22:43. > :22:53.on their 1-0 lead at shrews brie. Three goals conceded.

:22:53. > :23:00.There will be more action and news on a Late Kick Off.

:23:00. > :23:04.One result leapt out of the Rugby League Challenge Cup matches like a

:23:04. > :23:08.giant up and under. Classy Castleford, beaten by local rivals

:23:08. > :23:15.Featherstone Rovers. Although Castleford fans will not agree, it

:23:15. > :23:21.has given the cut such a boost for this afternoon's draw. We thus our

:23:21. > :23:26.coach Darryl Powell and chief executive Craig Poskitt.

:23:26. > :23:30.practice the players looked so relaxed and ready to go. We knew it

:23:31. > :23:37.would be difficult, but we knew we had the players to get the winner.

:23:37. > :23:41.How much has it helped to boost the players and give them that extra

:23:41. > :23:47.knowing it was Castleford, the rivalry goes back decades. The of

:23:47. > :23:53.course it does. It why it was such a big game, there hasn't been one

:23:53. > :23:57.for such a long time, five years. The fans were desperate for it to

:23:57. > :24:06.come around and to achieve the success was massive. The Act was a

:24:06. > :24:14.key try and another one coming up. -- that was. The first one had an
