:00:05. > :00:07.Good evening. Welcome to Tuesday's Look North.
:00:07. > :00:11.On the programme tonight: We're counting down to the Olympics,
:00:11. > :00:20.but what will Yorkshire get out of the biggest sporting event in the
:00:20. > :00:25.world? If I had the means and the money, then I'd certainly go away
:00:25. > :00:28.on the holidays during the Olympics. We'll be talking to those who think
:00:28. > :00:30.it's a boost for business and those who think it's a waste of money.
:00:30. > :00:35.Also tonight: Protestors are back outside the
:00:35. > :00:38.Menwith Hill spy base a decade on from the peace camps of the '90s.
:00:38. > :00:48.And the Yorkshire soldiers raising money for charity with a spoof
:00:48. > :00:49.
:00:49. > :00:58.video that's taken the internet by storm. Following the early morning
:00:58. > :01:08.rain it was a nice day. This shot was taken near Harrowgate.
:01:08. > :01:11.
:01:11. > :01:15.Good evening. Tomorrow it will be exactly a hundred days until the
:01:15. > :01:18.Olympics begin. Millions of pounds worth of
:01:18. > :01:21.taxpayers' money from Yorkshire has been spent on the event, but of
:01:21. > :01:24.course most of the action will be taking place hundreds of miles away.
:01:24. > :01:27.So what's in it for us? A good Yorkshire question, that. In a
:01:27. > :01:31.moment we'll be hearing both sides of the argument, but first, here's
:01:31. > :01:36.Nicola Lawrence. Meet the Riggs family from Harrogate. All five are
:01:36. > :01:40.going to London to be volunteers during this summer's Olympic Games.
:01:40. > :01:44.Just to be, like, amongst the buzz of it all and being in London
:01:44. > :01:49.during the Games and meeting people from all over the world. Somebody
:01:49. > :01:52.said to me the other day, "What's in it for you?" I explained we
:01:52. > :01:56.didn't get paid or accommodation provided. I said it would be a
:01:56. > :02:00.fantastic thing to be involved in. We're all really excited.
:02:00. > :02:03.everyone is as enthusiastic. A survey carried out last month
:02:03. > :02:08.showed that 41% of people in the North of England were interested in
:02:08. > :02:12.the Games, but more than half couldn't care less. It's nothing to
:02:12. > :02:16.do with Yorkshire, is it? It's all in London. I don't see how it's
:02:16. > :02:19.going to affect anyone up here. think it could promote, like,
:02:19. > :02:23.athletes from Yorkshire, but other than that I don't think it's going
:02:23. > :02:28.to do anything. If I had the means and the money, then I'd certainly
:02:28. > :02:35.go away on my holidays during the Olympics. Whether you care about
:02:35. > :02:38.the Games or not, your tax have been used to build the Olympic Park.
:02:38. > :02:43.21 years ago when Sheffield was used to stage the Games, that
:02:43. > :02:48.wasn't the cost. One was the sporting infrastructure cost, 150
:02:49. > :02:53.million. The other was the actual running of the Games. They lost 10
:02:53. > :02:58.million further. It cost the Sheffield taxpayers 160 million.
:02:58. > :03:02.There was no support from central Government. Apart from helping pay
:03:02. > :03:06.for the Games is Yorkshire making money from them? We know of at
:03:06. > :03:10.least three local businesses who have won direct contracts from the
:03:10. > :03:15.Games. Then there are the athletes from abroad who have chosen
:03:15. > :03:19.Yorkshire as the place to train ahead of the Games. It's hoped by
:03:19. > :03:29.attracting teams like the Chinese squad, who will train here in Leeds
:03:29. > :03:32.there, will be reasons for local businesses in the future.
:03:32. > :03:36.We've had scores of comments from you on our Facebook site. Opinion
:03:36. > :03:40.is pretty much divided. Becky Hancox says, "I'm really shocked so
:03:40. > :03:42.many people don't care. It's a big deal and a great chance to show the
:03:42. > :03:45.world what's best about Britain!" Richard Nicholson says, "The
:03:45. > :03:48.Olympics and the Jubilee will be tremendous adverts for Britain and
:03:48. > :03:58.will encourage visitors for many years to come. I can't believe the
:03:58. > :04:01.negativity." Donna Wilbor: "It's wasteful when
:04:01. > :04:04.people in our country are struggling. We have families
:04:04. > :04:05.finding feeding themselves hard and yet the millions being spent on
:04:05. > :04:11.these unnecessary things continues."
:04:11. > :04:14.Sarah Reed: "Total and utter waste of money. As for the revenue it
:04:14. > :04:16.will generate, how many of the most needy are going to benefit from
:04:16. > :04:19.it?" we're joined now by Gary Verity,
:04:19. > :04:21.chief executive of Yorkshire Gold, whose job it is to make sure
:04:21. > :04:27.Yorkshire benefits from the Olympics and Andrew Allison from
:04:27. > :04:31.the Taxpayers' Alliance. Gary, first of all, sell Yorkshire
:04:31. > :04:33.taxpayers the benefits of the Olympics 200 miles down the road in
:04:33. > :04:38.London. I don't think it matters about selling people the benefits
:04:38. > :04:41.of them. They're happening anyway in a hundred days' time. We can
:04:41. > :04:44.either make the most of them and seize the opportunities there are
:04:44. > :04:48.with them or we can carp on about them. The fact of the matter is if
:04:48. > :04:54.you wanted to have a debate whether they're a good or a bad idea that
:04:54. > :04:58.should have been had eight or nine years ago. The reality is they're
:04:58. > :05:05.happening. They have kept people in Yorkshire in jobs. They're keeping
:05:05. > :05:10.people in Yorkshire in jobs. We have provided not only the - half
:05:10. > :05:15.of the timber is from our site in Leeds in Sheffield, 80% of the
:05:15. > :05:22.steel has come from Yorkshire that's built the Olympic Park and
:05:22. > :05:27.2,500 wagons from Preston took that steel down to the Park. 635% of the
:05:27. > :05:30.hardstanding is from Huddersfield. These are real-life examples.
:05:30. > :05:35.safe to say you're a big fan of the Olympics.
:05:35. > :05:40.Let me ask you, get out of that. I am not saying I am not a big fan of
:05:40. > :05:50.the Olympics. I am sure I'll watch a few events. If we want to go back
:05:50. > :05:53.to 2005, it was 2-3 billion. It's gone up and up. The Budget has been
:05:53. > :05:57.revised upwards. It has cost taxpayers. Yes, it has. Yorkshire
:05:57. > :06:02.taxpayers are paying for this as well. What sort of legacy are they
:06:02. > :06:06.going to get? After the Games are over, there will be nothing there
:06:06. > :06:09.at all. The only legacy will be a bill. The legacy - we have done
:06:09. > :06:13.well leading up to it, but what about afterwards? I think you'll
:06:13. > :06:17.find we do extremely well out of it simply because if you look at
:06:17. > :06:20.tourism - we flow 69% of Londoners want to get out of London for the
:06:20. > :06:27.duration of the Olympics. They're all coming here? We're marketing
:06:27. > :06:31.hard into London - 24 hours ago I was on BBC London. You're starting
:06:31. > :06:35.a campaign yourself - Londoners aren't interested. Why should
:06:35. > :06:40.people in Yorkshire be interested? We want people to come and spend
:06:40. > :06:46.money here, eat our food, drink our beer and so on. That's very much
:06:46. > :06:50.what's going to happen. Are people going to rent their houses out in
:06:50. > :06:56.London for a fortune and come up here to the reasonably-priced
:06:56. > :07:01.Yorkshire? That may be one way of putting it, but I am not sure
:07:01. > :07:05.that'll apply to everyone, but having the torch relay here...
:07:05. > :07:10.You're hogging it... Those images will go around the world. Andrew?
:07:10. > :07:13.Most of my colleagues will want to get out of London. Yes, they may
:07:13. > :07:17.want to come to Yorkshire, that's true. This is for a couple of weeks
:07:17. > :07:21.in the summer. Yes, some businesses have benefited from this, but where
:07:21. > :07:25.is the legacy? When the torch goes on the Carlisle railway line, when
:07:25. > :07:29.it goes on the sea front in Scarborough, aren't people going to
:07:29. > :07:33.look and think, wow, Yorkshire is fabulous? Isn't it going to be
:07:33. > :07:36.worth it in terms of free advertising? It may well do. I
:07:36. > :07:39.don't necessarily disagree with that but I don't think we're going
:07:39. > :07:42.to get legions of foreigners coming into Yorkshire. They're going to
:07:42. > :07:46.spend two weeks in London. I don't think they're going to spend a lot
:07:46. > :07:51.of time going around the country. I don't think we're going to get
:07:51. > :07:54.agreement between the two of you. You both get a gold medal. It has
:07:54. > :07:56.been an interesting debate. Let's calm it all down.
:07:57. > :07:59.Tomorrow on Look North we'll be speaking to one of Yorkshire's
:07:59. > :08:02.Olympic hopefuls, Ed Clancy. With the 100-day countdown almost upon
:08:03. > :08:10.us, he said its beginning to feel like the race is just around the
:08:10. > :08:13.corner. It is starting to become, like, a reality, you know? There
:08:13. > :08:17.was talk about this event even before Beijing. There was as much
:08:17. > :08:21.talk about the London Olympics as the Beijing Olympics, so - no, it's
:08:21. > :08:24.starting to become a bit of a reality, but we're not stressing
:08:24. > :08:27.out just yet. We'll leave that a few more weeks, at least.
:08:27. > :08:30.Next tonight - for the first time in over a decade protestors have
:08:30. > :08:32.gathered outside Menwith Hill spy base in North Yorkshire. It's being
:08:32. > :08:35.described as an Occupy camp, similar to protests against
:08:35. > :08:38.capitalism that have taken place in Leeds, Sheffield and Bradford. But
:08:38. > :08:48.it's brought back memories of the women's peace camp of the early
:08:48. > :08:52.
:08:52. > :08:57.90's which occupied the site for The tents started appearing on
:08:57. > :09:00.Sunday - another Occupy protest, but this time without a bank or
:09:00. > :09:04.building society in sight. Today is the global day of action
:09:04. > :09:07.against military spending, and there are similar demonstrations
:09:07. > :09:11.taking place all over the world. An important part of what Occupy is
:09:11. > :09:15.trying to do is to reach out to other organisations and unite
:09:15. > :09:19.people in what is kind of a global fight against economic injustice.
:09:19. > :09:24.These tents may have been set up under a different banner. The
:09:24. > :09:31.Occupy movement is very much a modern phenomenon, but almost 20
:09:31. > :09:34.years after that original Men With Peace Camp, the message remains the
:09:34. > :09:38.same. Helen John was one of the original
:09:38. > :09:43.peace women, a veteran of Greenham Common, who then camped on this
:09:43. > :09:45.very spot for years. It wasn't a waste of time. I mean, we had the
:09:45. > :09:50.knowledge to understand how dangerous this place is, and, you
:09:50. > :09:54.know, the work that we will have to carry out now - all of that effort
:09:54. > :09:59.will be put to good use, so it hasn't been a waste of time. We
:09:59. > :10:03.just haven't used it as effectively as we could have done at the time.
:10:03. > :10:10.Things seem to be organised and cooperative. Our plan is to assist
:10:10. > :10:14.you to have a peaceful demonstration. Excellent. But then
:10:14. > :10:20.the demonstrators decided to make a move, tying banners with messages
:10:20. > :10:23.of peace to the perimeter fence. It drew an immediate response.
:10:23. > :10:28.It's not intentionally provocative. I would say that the policemen
:10:28. > :10:31.dragging them down next to us is deliberately provocative. Further
:10:31. > :10:41.demonstrations are planned this evening. Afterwards, the protesters
:10:41. > :10:43.
:10:43. > :10:47.decide whether it's time to break Do stay with us. Lots to come
:10:47. > :10:50.before 7.00pm. We'll meet a woman tightening her
:10:50. > :10:55.purse strings for charity. Ruby Smith is spending just 1 a
:10:55. > :10:58.day on food. She'll be here to tell us what's on the menu.
:10:58. > :11:03.A man's described the moment his hot air balloon crash landed on
:11:03. > :11:07.power cables near Selby. 61-year-old John Newstead was left
:11:07. > :11:10.with just a black eye after the balloon was dragged 200 yards by a
:11:10. > :11:16.gust of wind as it was trying to land. He'd taken the flight on
:11:16. > :11:20.Friday 13th! Ian White reports. John Newstead loves photography and
:11:20. > :11:25.wanted to get some dramatic pictures, so he booked a hot air
:11:25. > :11:28.balloon trip as a special treat, but there was more drama than he
:11:28. > :11:34.bargained for when the balloon crash landed on power lines moments
:11:34. > :11:37.after taking these pictures. There was an almighty bump, and we went
:11:37. > :11:41.over the bank, which committee didn't realise, drifted for a
:11:41. > :11:46.hundred yards or so, then stopped. We could hear a few crackles and
:11:46. > :11:52.bangs. He said, "You can come out now." It was only then we noticed
:11:52. > :11:56.how close we were to the water and the fact we were tangled in the
:11:56. > :12:04.electrical wires. We could have been electric outed or drowned.
:12:04. > :12:09.balloon attempted to land in West Haddlesey, but a strong wind caught
:12:09. > :12:13.the balloon at the last moment. lost sight of the balloon from the
:12:13. > :12:19.road and it drifted over to the lines, and as you can see the
:12:19. > :12:23.situation where it is, they have been really lucky. The cables carry
:12:23. > :12:26.66,000 votes. Fortunately, the power was cut as the balloon hit
:12:26. > :12:31.them. All passengers escaped without injury. John was left with
:12:31. > :12:36.a black eye. When we curled up to brace ourselves for landing, I
:12:36. > :12:40.tucked my camera between my knees, then the jolt as we bounced along,
:12:40. > :12:44.the thing smacked me in the face. full investigation has been
:12:44. > :12:48.launched to find out what went wrong. John says he would fly again.
:12:49. > :12:53.I can't wait to get up there - the same pilot. He treated us all
:12:53. > :12:57.wonderfully. He did so well to avoid a catastrophe. But he
:12:57. > :13:02.probably won't be in a hurry to take a balloon trip again on Friday
:13:02. > :13:07.the 13th! A busy news day.
:13:07. > :13:12.The Sheffield United footballer who was accused of attempting to rape a
:13:12. > :13:18.woman has been giving evidence. 23- year-old Mr Evans told the court
:13:18. > :13:21.the woman consented to sex. He and another player both deny rape. Ched
:13:21. > :13:23.Evans is expected to continue giving evidence in court tomorrow.
:13:23. > :13:26.You may remember this story. Two nurseries in York which were
:13:26. > :13:29.being investigated over the care and supervision they give to
:13:29. > :13:31.children have been given the all clear by Ofsted. Little Joe's and
:13:31. > :13:34.Heworth House nurseries were issued with "welfare requirement notices",
:13:34. > :13:36.but the watchdog says they've taken action and are following all
:13:36. > :13:38.regulations. The solicitor representing both nurseries says
:13:38. > :13:47.the allegations were brought by a former member of staff, and
:13:47. > :13:52.children's welfare was never 140,000 people have signed a
:13:52. > :13:55.petition calling for more support for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. It
:13:55. > :13:59.means the issue will now be discussed in Parliament.
:13:59. > :14:08.Campaigners want the charity to be exempt from paying VAT on the fuel
:14:08. > :14:14.their helicopters use. It would save the charity 6,000 a year.
:14:14. > :14:18.a total costs each year are 2.6 million and 6,000 is a great help
:14:18. > :14:22.towards the cost of running the helicopters. It would mean we could
:14:22. > :14:28.reach three people, and at the moment we would have to raise that
:14:29. > :14:31.extra money for it. More than 400 police and other agencies carried
:14:31. > :14:34.out the biggest ever swoop across South Yorkshire today on scrap
:14:34. > :14:37.yards suspected of buying and selling stolen metal. 40 arrests
:14:37. > :14:41.were made after months of planning against a highly dangerous crime
:14:41. > :14:50.which is costing the country hundreds of millions of pounds. Our
:14:50. > :14:55.Crime Correspondent John Cundy watched the operation. Ready to go
:14:56. > :15:00.on today's massive operation South Yorkshire. One of the biggest raids
:15:00. > :15:07.at this scrap metal dealers in Barnsley. Today there were 40
:15:07. > :15:15.arrests. It is a significant problem. It has set -- it affects
:15:15. > :15:19.transport, all air transport infrastructures. They must find out
:15:19. > :15:25.of anything illegal has been going on in this Yard. If it has, thieves
:15:25. > :15:33.will have been risking their lives that to sell scrap metal. These can
:15:33. > :15:37.Carrick anything up to 132,000 volts. And so it this Hopper will
:15:37. > :15:44.be investigated. It must be established whether there has been
:15:44. > :15:54.anything illegal. We have seen a doubling of metal theft in 2011
:15:54. > :15:59.compared to 2010. In Rotherham, vehicles received -- seized and
:15:59. > :16:03.searched. This is one of 10 sites raided by police across South
:16:03. > :16:09.Yorkshire today it in the biggest ever come down on metal baton the
:16:09. > :16:17.county. As copper prices soar, metal first a costing the British
:16:18. > :16:27.economy 800 billion at a year. When they beat us doing this, they
:16:28. > :16:30.
:16:30. > :16:35.have no regard for public safety -- when they are doing this. Before
:16:35. > :16:43.7pm: The Yorkshire soldiers still finding time for fun in the most
:16:44. > :16:53.dangerous place in the world. And they've become internet stars, but
:16:53. > :16:56.Now, if you've just had your tea, spare a thought for Ruby Smith from
:16:56. > :17:02.Sheffield. The council worker has just begun a challenge to spend no
:17:02. > :17:05.more than 1 a day on food for a month. It's part of a UNICEF
:17:05. > :17:12.charity campaign to raise money and help people understand what its
:17:12. > :17:21.like to live below the poverty line. We'll be meeting her in a moment,
:17:21. > :17:27.but first Tom Ingall finds out what its like to live on so little.
:17:27. > :17:31.Breakfast, one slice of dry toast and a Kiwi. This is day five of
:17:31. > :17:39.Ruby Smith's challenge to buy it all her food and a budget of just
:17:39. > :17:44.1 a day. It is a constant reminder of why am doing it. I'm only doing
:17:44. > :17:49.it for a month, it is not that difficult. There are 1.4 billion
:17:49. > :17:54.people around the world who do this without any choice every day.
:17:54. > :17:58.Smith is a volunteer for the charity Unicef. They ask people to
:17:58. > :18:03.live below the poverty line for a week and she is doing it for a
:18:03. > :18:08.month. My priority has been to make sure I'm getting enough calories
:18:08. > :18:12.because I am doing the Great North Run of this year so I am doing a
:18:12. > :18:18.lot of training. I need to make sure I'm having enough throughout
:18:18. > :18:22.the course of the day. It is then after work. No snacks, no treats
:18:22. > :18:27.and avoiding the temptation of lunch bag with colleagues. I have
:18:27. > :18:32.already learnt so much about my own ways of shopping and eating that I
:18:32. > :18:38.definitely want to change, because it is quite a wasteful lifestyles
:18:38. > :18:43.that I do and other people do as well. If it does force Ruby to
:18:43. > :18:51.change her habits, she knows she is lucky to have that choice at all.
:18:51. > :18:55.Ruby Smith joins us now. You can't live off 1 a day! You can, it's
:18:55. > :19:01.not fun, but it is possible. this looks really appetising, but
:19:01. > :19:11.the trouble is that this source, you have got to make it last nearly
:19:11. > :19:18.
:19:18. > :19:28.afford night. -- two weeks. I don't like Pastor! Has it made you change
:19:28. > :19:29.
:19:30. > :19:34.or has it made you think about what you spend on food? A absolutely.
:19:34. > :19:37.Their 1.4 billion people who do it every single day. It is a good, a
:19:37. > :19:46.constant reminder about what you are eating and the actual cost of
:19:46. > :19:50.that. It should remind us how much food we waste as well. Yes,
:19:50. > :19:57.normally I wouldn't eat the crust on my toast, but at the minute I
:19:57. > :20:02.need crusts! And you can't afford margarine. He need the energy at
:20:02. > :20:10.the moment? Yes, I'm doing the Great North Run and the Great North
