:00:07. > :00:09.Welcome to Look North. Tonight: Where was he hiding?

:00:09. > :00:12.Police questioning double murder suspect James Allen want to know

:00:12. > :00:16.exactly where he's spent the last week. They appeal to people in

:00:16. > :00:19.Whitby, Scarborough and Leeds to help fill the gaps.

:00:19. > :00:22.Also tonight - "an outstanding leader": Hundreds gather for the

:00:22. > :00:28.funeral of Corporal Jake Hartley, one of six soldiers serving with

:00:28. > :00:32.the Yorkshire Regiment killed in a bomb blast in Afghanistan.

:00:32. > :00:35.Also on Look North: How one 999 operator kept his cool and saved a

:00:35. > :00:45.life. We reunite a woman trapped in a

:00:45. > :00:49.

:00:49. > :00:52.blazing house with the man who kept her alive.

:00:52. > :01:02.And a 47 mile-long poetry trail that will be set in stone along the

:01:10. > :01:15.based in sunshine. Your forecast coming up shortly. -- David in

:01:15. > :01:17.sunshine. Welcome to the programme. First

:01:17. > :01:20.tonight, police are appealing to people in three Yorkshire towns to

:01:20. > :01:26.help them work out where double murder suspect James Allen was

:01:26. > :01:30.hiding while he was on the run. Mr Allen was arrested in Leeds

:01:30. > :01:33.yesterday after being spotted by an off duty policeman. Detectives have

:01:34. > :01:36.tonight been given more time to question him.

:01:37. > :01:39.They had been searching for him since the murder of Colin Dunford

:01:39. > :01:42.in Middlesbrough last Monday, and Julie Davison in Whitby on

:01:42. > :01:45.Wednesday. They know he spent at least one night in Scarborough, but

:01:46. > :01:55.say it's important to fill in the gaps in case other crimes have been

:01:56. > :01:57.

:01:57. > :02:04.committed. They've even urged local people to check friends are OK.

:02:04. > :02:12.Early yesterday morning the LMS of on off-duty policeman N's are huge

:02:12. > :02:18.five-day manhunt. Driving along the, he recognises James Allen on the

:02:18. > :02:24.run. Add grit -- a quick allowed to colleagues, a short chase on foot.

:02:24. > :02:28.The pursuit of James Allen began last Monday when the body of Colin

:02:29. > :02:34.Dunford was found at his home in Middlesbrough. On Wednesday, Julie

:02:34. > :02:39.Davison, described by her family today as "the kindest of people

:02:39. > :02:44.close court, was discovered murdered at her home in Whitby. Mr

:02:44. > :02:49.Alan travel from Scarborough to Leeds, where he was spotted,

:02:49. > :02:52.clearly disguised, on CCTV. His arrest followed at Crown Point in

:02:52. > :02:56.the city. The last person known to have

:02:56. > :03:01.spotted -- spoken to James Allen since that - if the owner of the

:03:01. > :03:07.guest house where he stayed. If he was a very pleasant, calm, man. He

:03:07. > :03:11.seemed quite intelligent, and had little stories to tell. He seemed

:03:11. > :03:14.like a normal visitor. This are afternoon police appealed for

:03:14. > :03:18.residents in the Scarborough and Whitby areas to look for any signs

:03:18. > :03:22.around their homes of anyone who might be living rough.

:03:22. > :03:28.Detectives want to piece together all of James Allen's movements.

:03:28. > :03:32.is important that details such as that are established. Where he was,

:03:32. > :03:37.who he has been with, who might have seen him. It is important to

:03:37. > :03:41.fall in those gaps for. PC rider has been widely praised by

:03:41. > :03:45.a senior police officers for his role in identifying James Allen

:03:45. > :03:51.yesterday. Tonight, back in Middlesbrough, the questioning of

:03:51. > :03:53.the 35-year-old suspect is under way.

:03:54. > :03:56.Next tonight: It'll be September at the earliest before overnight

:03:56. > :03:58.accident and emergency services are re-opened to patients at Pontefract

:03:59. > :04:01.Hospital. The hospital trust today announced

:04:02. > :04:05.plans to use GPs and nurses with extra training to plug their

:04:05. > :04:08.staffing shortfall, rather than specialist doctors.

:04:08. > :04:11.It's now six months since Pontefract A&E was forced to make

:04:11. > :04:16.overnight closures. It was a shortage of middle grade

:04:16. > :04:19.doctors that forced the closure between 10pm and 8am.

:04:19. > :04:22.The Trust said the decision was made on patient safety grounds.

:04:22. > :04:32.At one point, army medics were considered as a way of keeping it

:04:32. > :04:33.

:04:33. > :04:37.open. For the walking wounded, seriously

:04:37. > :04:42.ill and those in need of help, the closure of Pontefract A&E has been

:04:42. > :04:48.a source of anger. For the last six months, patients have had to travel

:04:48. > :04:54.elsewhere, with many going to wake filled. I am not happy about it. I

:04:54. > :05:01.was in quite a lot of pain. Abbott, how am I going to travel, can I

:05:01. > :05:07.afford it? At door was thrown back at me. It fractured a little bone.

:05:07. > :05:11.What it it had been a child? To date the hospital trust

:05:11. > :05:15.announced plans to reopen Pontefract A&E to overnight

:05:15. > :05:20.patients on 3rd September, by using GPS with extra training to make up

:05:20. > :05:25.the shortage of specialist doctors. It is not a downgrading of the

:05:25. > :05:28.service. We will have our A&E consultants and emergency care

:05:28. > :05:32.specialists supporting those specialist GPs and nurses for

:05:32. > :05:36.stopped that support includes an onside anaesthetist and a

:05:36. > :05:41.consultant on call. As before, critically ill patients

:05:41. > :05:44.will continue to be taken elsewhere. When people hear GPs with extra

:05:44. > :05:51.training, they might question whether that is the same as a

:05:51. > :05:56.specialist in a -- A&E? GPs with special skills have worked in the

:05:56. > :06:01.NHS for years, and I'd do not think there are issues here about the

:06:01. > :06:06.quality of the services they will provide. I as long as the GPs and

:06:06. > :06:11.nurses with extra skills can do what is needed, I am not to upset

:06:11. > :06:15.about it. If it is something severe enough that a GP cannot handle it,

:06:15. > :06:20.but means that person has come to Pontefract and then they have to go

:06:20. > :06:26.from Pontefract to weak field which is taking up what could be

:06:26. > :06:30.important time. By Hotspur trusts say today's announcement say --

:06:30. > :06:38.should guarantee A&E services for the foreseeable future, albeit at

:06:38. > :06:41.different -- different way of doing things.

:06:41. > :06:44.Later on Look North: Hundreds of jobs go at a Leeds-

:06:44. > :06:46.based bank. He company which owns the Yorkshire and Clydesdale scales

:06:46. > :06:49.back its operation. A soldier from West Yorkshire, who

:06:49. > :06:52.died along with five colleagues in a bomb attack in Afghanistan, has

:06:52. > :06:57.been described as "a fine soldier and an outstanding leader" by his

:06:57. > :07:07.commanding officer. The funeral of 20 year-old Corporal Jake Hartley

:07:07. > :07:07.

:07:07. > :07:11.has taken place at New Mill near Holmfirth today.

:07:11. > :07:16.Christ Church in the village of New Mill was the setting for corporal

:07:16. > :07:22.Jake Hodges's funeral. His coffin was brought to that church on a

:07:22. > :07:24.horse-drawn hearse. -- Jake Hartley. Corporal Hartley was serving with

:07:24. > :07:30.3rd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment in Afghanistan when he and

:07:30. > :07:35.five colleagues were killed in it brought its -- would six --

:07:35. > :07:39.roadside explosion. He was described as a joker in the

:07:39. > :07:43.pack. He was also described as the ultimate soldier. On a day like

:07:43. > :07:47.this when we have a full military funeral for a soldier that came top

:07:47. > :07:52.of his junior commander's course, I think that accolade sums him up but

:07:52. > :07:58.it did. During the service, Jake's 12-year-

:07:58. > :08:04.old brother Ethan held back tears as he addressed the congregation.

:08:04. > :08:14.The day before he went on his second tour, we sat on the sulphite

:08:14. > :08:24.just crying. -- we sat on the so far. He knew what was going to

:08:24. > :08:31.

:08:31. > :08:37.Huddersfield Giants * Keith Mason was a close friend, and was at

:08:37. > :08:43.today's service. His neighbours wanted to show their support. He

:08:43. > :08:47.the family will be comforted. was obviously well lot, and I'm

:08:47. > :08:53.sure that will be a comfort for. Corporal Hartley's body was taken

:08:53. > :09:00.for a private funeral. -- burial. Funerals of the other five soldiers

:09:00. > :09:03.killed in Afghanistan will take place over the next few days.

:09:03. > :09:04.Fire investigators are working at the Sheffield Ski Village after the

:09:05. > :09:07.main building was destroyed on Saturday night.

:09:07. > :09:10.The restaurant, bar and ski equipment hire centre were all lost

:09:10. > :09:15.in the fire, which could be seen from miles away. Investigators say

:09:15. > :09:20.they are working with police. The centre has suffered from arson

:09:20. > :09:30.attacks in the past. Staff arrived at work this morning to find out

:09:30. > :09:31.

:09:31. > :09:37.about their future - there's no word yet if the centre will reopen.

:09:37. > :09:44.Obviously they are all reeling from it. It is absolutely gone. You are

:09:45. > :09:49.talking about a number of full-time staff? Round about 30 full-time and

:09:50. > :09:52.about 20 part time. Straight out of work.

:09:52. > :09:54.More bad news for the banking sector today. Leeds-based Yorkshire

:09:54. > :09:56.Bank has announced it's shedding hundreds of jobs.

:09:57. > :09:59.National Australia Bank, which runs the Yorkshire along with the

:09:59. > :10:07.Clydesdale, says it's having to shrink operations in the UK because

:10:07. > :10:11.of the state of the economy. Big figures to talk about - 14,000

:10:11. > :10:15.jobs will be lost by the two banks by 2015 from here in Yorkshire -

:10:15. > :10:18.that's 300 posts. Effectively 16% of the current workforce will go

:10:18. > :10:21.over three years. The news of job losses came out of

:10:21. > :10:31.Australia in the early hours, and many staff woke up to hear about

:10:31. > :10:35.the decision on the morning news, something that's angered unions.

:10:35. > :10:39.We only found out about this late last night, and we had to go

:10:39. > :10:47.digging on the internet to find out about what the situation was. The

:10:47. > :10:53.unions have not even been told about this, and the staff in it

:10:53. > :10:56.quite despicable way. National Australia Bank's told us

:10:56. > :10:59.it's been forced into restructuring because of the state of the economy

:10:59. > :11:02.- in fact it's had to effectively write off almost 6.5 billion worth

:11:03. > :11:05.of property loans in the UK - I told you these were big numbers.

:11:05. > :11:08.The restructuring focuses on its commercial ventures, and six back

:11:08. > :11:10.office locations like Brunswick Place here in Leeds will go along

:11:10. > :11:13.with 29 business centres. But a shrinking banking sector means

:11:13. > :11:23.there will be less support for business, which we're all relying

:11:23. > :11:24.

:11:24. > :11:27.on to get the economy moving. Quite a lot of our members want to

:11:27. > :11:35.expand, but the problems they are facing is that they cannot get

:11:35. > :11:39.access to finance. I don't think this will help the situation. One

:11:40. > :11:47.bank is virtually saying there are certain areas of the market they

:11:48. > :11:51.will no longer lend to. Now, if you're a retail customer -

:11:51. > :11:53.you have an account with Yorkshire or Clydesdale - you won't see any

:11:54. > :11:57.difference to services, with all 330 branches staying open. But to

:11:57. > :12:00.put all this in context, the group as a whole has just announced half-

:12:00. > :12:03.year earnings were up almost 6% at 2.8 billion.

:12:03. > :12:09.Before seven o'clock: Advantage to the Owls - Wednesday edge ahead as

:12:09. > :12:19.automatic promotion goes to the wire.

:12:19. > :12:21.

:12:21. > :12:24.And the literary trail that Next tonight, a frantic 999 call

:12:24. > :12:29.from a young woman trapped in a blazing house and terrified that

:12:29. > :12:31.she won't get out alive. As firefighters rush to rescue

:12:31. > :12:34.Sinead Bowden from her house in Sheffield, control room operator

:12:34. > :12:44.Liam Booth stays on the line, giving her vital safety advice and

:12:44. > :12:44.

:12:44. > :13:37.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 52 seconds

:13:37. > :13:40.That is exactly how I would be. Well, fortunately, the drama had a

:13:40. > :13:43.happy ending. The firefighters managed to get to Sinead in time,

:13:43. > :13:46.and tonight she's gone to the fire station to say thank you to Liam

:13:46. > :13:52.and his colleagues for saving her life. Tom Ingall's there with them

:13:52. > :13:56.now. Your heart has to be in your mouth

:13:56. > :14:03.when you are listening to that. A week ago, this very fire engine set

:14:03. > :14:08.off from Sheffield off up to Sinead Bowden's house to rescue her from

:14:08. > :14:13.the fire. By pensions do not go by themselves, they need somebody to

:14:13. > :14:18.control them. Liam Booth has been working in the control and for four

:14:18. > :14:23.years. What was on your mind when you answered the call to a

:14:23. > :14:26.hysterical Sinead Bowden? The key thing is to remain calm. It was

:14:26. > :14:30.natural she was going to be slightly upset. And uneasy about

:14:30. > :14:34.what was going on. The key thing is to remain calm, get as much

:14:34. > :14:38.information from her as I can, so that I can get the fire engines

:14:38. > :14:43.going, and that is when the communication took play is. And you

:14:43. > :14:49.were there as a lifeline. You reassured her. That is the key

:14:49. > :14:54.thing. We are trained to be able to do that, to remain calm, showed no

:14:54. > :14:59.emotion, so it doesn't come across to the corner because if I remain

:14:59. > :15:04.calm, she became calm. We have heard some of the tape. Your

:15:04. > :15:08.reaction is understandable. Tell us what was happening. I woke up and

:15:08. > :15:14.my bedroom was filled with smoke. I tried to go downstairs, tried to

:15:14. > :15:20.get out, then I ran upstairs and ice-cream to get me out.

:15:20. > :15:26.helpful was he? Amazing. If he saved my life. The firefighters got

:15:26. > :15:31.there as quickly as they could. seemed like a lifetime. It was

:15:31. > :15:35.almost 17 minutes. But he really can't the Dow. It takes a lot to

:15:35. > :15:43.calm me down, and he did. What sort of helpful advice was he giving

:15:43. > :15:48.you? Like, he told me to shut the bedroom door, to put a blanket

:15:48. > :15:54.underneath, close the bedroom door, and he just kept me informed. He

:15:54. > :15:59.told me where the fire engine was. Just, like, keeping me informed all

:15:59. > :16:04.the way through. Not only telling me what to do but why I needed to

:16:04. > :16:10.do it. It really helped. Is this part of the day job? We do not get

:16:10. > :16:15.these very often, but when we do, we get the good ones. For the key

:16:15. > :16:20.thing is she listened to everything we have to say. The smoke alarm did

:16:20. > :16:29.not activate on this occasion, that is why people need to check them.

:16:29. > :16:32.good point to end on. The punchline is that if Sinead Bowden worked in

:16:32. > :16:39.a call centre, her manner would be different.

:16:39. > :16:46.We were at all be like that. Let's talk about League One. How on

:16:46. > :16:50.earth did Sheffield United not get a winner? But they did not. If this

:16:50. > :16:53.was a board game, we would run out of port right now.

:16:53. > :16:56.Well, most of our teams had their fates sealed before this weekend

:16:56. > :16:59.but others still had plenty to play for, not least the Sheffield clubs.

:16:59. > :17:02.They're fighting each other for promotion to the Championship.

:17:02. > :17:05.Wednesday had the chance to land the first blow as they played at

:17:05. > :17:14.Brentford before United kicked off at home to Stevenage. Ian Bucknell

:17:14. > :17:19.season so Sheffield Wednesday fans were in no mood to party, whatever

:17:19. > :17:26.happened. An incredible miss by Brentford from two yards out make

:17:26. > :17:32.them feel it was going to be their day. Minutes later, it was Mackin

:17:32. > :17:38.at the near post to put the Owls in front. Brentford equalised from the

:17:38. > :17:48.spot but Wednesday would not be denied. The Owls were ahead in the

:17:48. > :17:51.

:17:51. > :17:56.promotion is. Over to Bramall Lane. The second

:17:56. > :18:05.for Stevenage took a bizarre defection that foiled the keeper.

:18:05. > :18:13.The Blades were down but not out. They scored two goals. They poured

:18:13. > :18:17.level. More chances came. But they all went. It ended in misery for

:18:17. > :18:22.United and with advantage to Wednesday. If the cowls win at the

:18:22. > :18:29.weekend, then they should be promoted leaving the Blades with

:18:29. > :18:32.One thing that was decided was the fate of Chesterfield who are

:18:32. > :18:36.relegated back down to League Two. They've put up a great fight in the

:18:36. > :18:46.bid to stay up in recent weeks, and looked good for another win when

:18:46. > :18:49.they went two one up at Yeovil. -- they went 2-1 up at The Oval. They

:18:49. > :18:51.eventually lost 3-2 but manager John Sheridan says he wants to stay

:18:51. > :18:54.on and guide the club back up next season.

:18:54. > :18:57.And you can get all the weekends action and much more on Late Kick

:18:57. > :18:59.Off tonight at 11:05pm. John Hendrie and Dave Bassett are the

:18:59. > :19:01.guests. Leeds and Huddersfield are left

:19:01. > :19:05.flying the flag for Yorkshire in the quarterfinals of the Challenge

:19:05. > :19:07.Cup. They were very nearly joined by Batley who put up a great

:19:07. > :19:10.performance against London. John Kear had said it would be Mount

:19:10. > :19:13.Unpleasant to welcome the Super League side and conditions were

:19:13. > :19:19.quite something. But they eventually lost out 22-16. The draw

:19:19. > :19:21.for the quarterfinals is on 5Live tomorrow morning at 8:20am.

:19:21. > :19:25.In cricket, Yorkshire hope Australian fast bowler Mitchell

:19:25. > :19:29.Starc will be playing for them early next month. If the paperwork

:19:29. > :19:38.can all be sorted out, the 22-year- old should be here in time for the

:19:38. > :19:40.County Championship match against Gloucestershire. And you are off to

:19:40. > :19:45.Scarborough? Years. It is a pity we cannot get

:19:45. > :19:47.him for that game because they could do with some firepower.

:19:47. > :19:52.Were due is surprising because they have some good bowlers.

:19:52. > :19:57.What have you done to your hand? It to is a sporting injury.

:19:57. > :20:00.To tendonitis. It isn't. You're playing about in a

:20:00. > :20:03.five-a-side football match, willy- nilly.

:20:03. > :20:07.Willy-nilly, was it? Really?

:20:07. > :20:10.It's something we can't tame or control. And something we just

:20:10. > :20:13.can't stop talking about - the weather. Over the past 18 months,

:20:13. > :20:21.six poems about different forms of water have been carved into stones

:20:21. > :20:23.along the Pennine watershed. Some people do not like them at all.

:20:23. > :20:26.Some absolutely love them. They've been commissioned by the Ilkley

:20:26. > :20:34.Literature Festival and are part of a project called iMove which aims

:20:34. > :20:40.to leave a cultural legacy from the Olympics here in Yorkshire. The

:20:40. > :20:43.stones form a 47 mile-long walking trail from Ilkley to Marsden. They

:20:43. > :20:53.promote exercise. Our reporter Olivia Richwald has been following

:20:53. > :20:58.

:20:58. > :21:01.From puddles to pouring rain, mist on the moors to becks flowing down

:21:01. > :21:08.hillsides, this is the landscape that has inspired Simon Armitage

:21:08. > :21:12.and now his words have become part of that scenery. On some level, it

:21:12. > :21:15.is giving poetry back to the landscape. This is a county which

:21:15. > :21:19.is steeped in literary history, and a lot of that is to do with the

:21:19. > :21:27.land, the geology, the environment, and I feel that over the years, I

:21:27. > :21:30.have taken from that, and this is putting something back. Pip is

:23:49. > :23:53.What is this? It is near Scarborough.

:23:53. > :23:58.That scene was mirrored across many parts of Yorkshire. Hardly

:24:19. > :24:27.That is beautiful with the cumulus in the background. The second one,

:24:37. > :24:44.In fact, we have got 17 degrees at church Fenton this afternoon, so it

:24:45. > :24:49.is a wonderful end to an appalling month. May well start in a similar

:24:49. > :24:55.vein. Not the deluge that we had yesterday. The atmosphere is trying

:24:55. > :24:59.to force the low-pressure out of the way. What that means is that

:24:59. > :25:04.much colder air its -- is on its way and we could see the return of

:25:04. > :25:10.night frosts. That is next weekend, gardeners beware. We have got

:25:10. > :25:14.plenty of sunshine across central and eastern areas, but the cloud

:25:14. > :25:18.will increase and it looks like over the next few hours we could

:25:18. > :25:24.pick up some thundery showers, mainly in southern areas of the

:25:34. > :25:38.

:25:38. > :25:43.temperatures coming in at 6 or 7, but a windy night. So, it looks as

:25:43. > :25:47.though it is going to be cloudy, but we will have patchy outbreaks

:25:47. > :25:53.of rain edging in from the South East. It is not a wall of water,

:25:53. > :25:58.there will be some dry periods, but rain is never far away. That

:25:58. > :26:05.easterly wind will ease later along the coast. Never too warm with that

:26:05. > :26:10.wind off the coast. Inland with some dry slots, around about 13.

:26:10. > :26:15.Looking further ahead, a grey start on Wednesday turning brighter,

:26:15. > :26:19.Thursday not too bad, but a plunge in temperatures by next weekend.

:26:20. > :26:24.That is my birthday, Friday. Plunging temperatures?
