:00:11. > :00:14.Good evening, and welcome to Thursday's Look North. On the

:00:14. > :00:17.programme tonight: Locked up, thousands of miles from home.

:00:17. > :00:27.One family's campaign to free a North Yorkshire man, held without

:00:27. > :00:32.charge in an African jail. They just sat there. They have just

:00:32. > :00:36.sat the door -- shut the door and let him in there.

:00:36. > :00:38.Also tonight: more reasons for a fall in sales. Has Yorkshire-based

:00:39. > :00:44.Morrisons fallen victim to supermarket wars, as sales dip for

:00:44. > :00:54.the first time in nearly a decade? And, action! We go behind the

:00:54. > :00:59.scenes, as the Antiques Roadshow rolls into Scarborough.

:00:59. > :01:09.Grey skies today, similar tomorrow but much brighter at the weekend. A

:01:09. > :01:12.First tonight: Fears are growing for a man from North Yorkshire,

:01:12. > :01:16.held without charge in an African jail. David Simpson, from Pickering,

:01:16. > :01:19.was working in the Central African Republic as a safari guide when, he

:01:19. > :01:22.says, he discovered massacred bodies in the bush. He reported the

:01:22. > :01:25.find to the authorities in the capital Bangi, but was then

:01:25. > :01:35.arrested on suspicion of committing the murders. His family are

:01:35. > :01:35.

:01:35. > :01:42.campaigning for his release. Cathy Killick reports.

:01:42. > :01:46.On the edge of the North York Moors, the family farm is flourishing.

:01:46. > :01:49.While one brother tends his farm at home, the other is in jail in the

:01:49. > :01:53.Central African Republic. David Simpson was working for a Swedish

:01:53. > :02:02.company that takes clients game hunting. He had been clearing out a

:02:02. > :02:08.road when he found the bodies of 18 men. They had been bound, tortured

:02:08. > :02:11.and murdered. The first thing he saw was six people, they were faced

:02:11. > :02:17.them with their hands tied. They had been beaten by sticks and had

:02:17. > :02:26.machete wounds to the back of their head. He went further and found

:02:26. > :02:29.another four people, tied in the same way. It bore the hallmarks of

:02:29. > :02:32.a Lord's Resistance Army massacre. They are a rebel group. Their

:02:32. > :02:36.crimes include rape, torture, murder and using children as

:02:36. > :02:40.soldiers. David reported the massacre to the authorities.

:02:40. > :02:50.Instead of being questioned as a witness, he and his boss were

:02:50. > :02:50.

:02:50. > :02:54.thrown in jail as suspects. They should have been charged within six

:02:54. > :02:58.days or released, but a month later, they remain in jail. The Foreign

:02:58. > :03:08.Office and the British Embassy are both aware of his plight but so far

:03:08. > :03:23.

:03:23. > :03:28.My big fear is that they try to pin it all on David, with no evidence,

:03:28. > :03:34.and it will end up having to go to trial and he could be in prison for

:03:35. > :03:39.seven months. That is my big fear. They can't convict him of it. He

:03:39. > :03:44.has lawyer's on his side, very good people who understand the country.

:03:44. > :03:50.But if they try to charge him with it, then he could be there for

:03:50. > :03:54.months. In the meantime, David's family can only wait, trusting

:03:54. > :03:57.lawyers to pick their way through a justice system very foreign to our

:03:57. > :04:01.own. The Bradford-based supermarket

:04:01. > :04:04.chain Morrisons has seen sales drop, in the first part of this year.

:04:04. > :04:07.It's the first downturn since the company took over Safeway in 2004.

:04:07. > :04:16.So, what's responsible for the slowdown, and should investors and

:04:16. > :04:19.shoppers be concerned? Here's Danni Hewson.

:04:19. > :04:29.It seems Morrisons has fallen victim to the oft talked about

:04:29. > :04:33.supermarket wars. The company's announced its first fall in sales

:04:33. > :04:36.in nearly a decade. Down 1% in the first quarter of this year. Now,

:04:36. > :04:39.Morrisons is the UK's fourth biggest supermarket, with 455

:04:40. > :04:43.stores. It's put its decline down to a refusal to square up to its

:04:43. > :04:48.rivals in the promotions ring. But, with our budgets so tight, are

:04:48. > :04:55.money off vouchers too tempting to pass up? I have four kids, so yes,

:04:55. > :04:59.definitely. Everything helps. little helps. It helps, in the

:04:59. > :05:04.financial climate, if you are going to shop there anyway and get

:05:04. > :05:09.bonuses for doing it, it is worthwhile. You do get plenty of

:05:09. > :05:13.offers in other places. The regular place I shop would have offers so

:05:13. > :05:18.it would not make the shop where I go now. For I would prefer to go

:05:18. > :05:21.where I know there is quality rather than money off.

:05:21. > :05:24.Perception is everything, of course. And this week's comparison of a

:05:24. > :05:27.basket of 33 goods puts Morrisons as the cheapest of the big five

:05:27. > :05:30.supermarkets. And, after a better than expected 8% rise in underlying

:05:30. > :05:33.pre-tax profits last year, its outlook for this year remains

:05:33. > :05:36.unchanged. But its share prices are worrying, having slipped 17% over

:05:36. > :05:45.the last six months. Leeds-based stockbroker Redmain Bentley says

:05:45. > :05:51.the grocer is playing the long game. Rather than going with the small

:05:51. > :05:56.gains for a quick fix, like ASDA, Sainsbury, they are sitting back,

:05:56. > :06:00.saying, we don't need to compete like that. We have low prices, so

:06:00. > :06:07.we are going to compete by making the stores more appealing, making

:06:07. > :06:09.the shopping experience better, making sure they have their e-

:06:09. > :06:13.commerce ticking over in the background.

:06:13. > :06:16.The ferocious battle to get us to push our trolleys through the door

:06:16. > :06:18.will undoubtedly continue to hot up, as shoppers feel the squeeze.

:06:18. > :06:22.Morrisons is detemined to keep its place.

:06:22. > :06:31.Later on Look North: Au revoir, Ajmal, Yorkshire says it's onwards

:06:31. > :06:34.and upwards, after the surprise More of the day's news now. And the

:06:35. > :06:38.man accused of murdering a woman from Whitby and a man from

:06:38. > :06:42.Middlesbrough has appeared in court via video link from prison. James

:06:42. > :06:46.Allen was arrested in Leeds, on Sunday. Today, he appeared at

:06:46. > :06:53.Teeside Crown Court. The 35 year old didn't enter a plea, and the

:06:53. > :06:56.case was adjourned until July. The body of a man found in the

:06:56. > :06:59.River Don, in Doncaster, on Tuesday evening has been confirmed as that

:06:59. > :07:03.of missing pensioner, Ernest Lancaster. The 82 year old had been

:07:03. > :07:06.missing from his home in Brinsworth for over three weeks. He'd been

:07:06. > :07:07.suffering from Alzheimer's disease, and police say there were no

:07:08. > :07:11.suspicious circumstances. Polling stations have opened for

:07:11. > :07:14.voters to have their say in local elections and mayoral referendums.

:07:14. > :07:16.Voters can head for the polls until 10 o'clock tonight. Referendums in

:07:16. > :07:19.Sheffield, Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield and Doncaster will decide

:07:19. > :07:21.whether people want an elected mayor. There's a special election

:07:21. > :07:24.2012 programme, beginning at 11.35pm tonight, and continuing

:07:24. > :07:34.through the night. We'll have all the results throughout the day

:07:34. > :07:37.

:07:37. > :07:40.Hundreds of residents living in luxury apartments in Leeds face

:07:40. > :07:44.days without water, because of a fractured pipe. Residents at West

:07:44. > :07:47.Point in the city centre are having to use bottled water, and have been

:07:47. > :07:57.told supplies won't be restored for up to 72 hours. Charlotte Leeming

:07:57. > :07:59.

:07:59. > :08:02.has this. Then Day two without water for this

:08:02. > :08:12.man. That means the dirty washing pile is getting bigger, and the

:08:12. > :08:16.toilet and shower are out of bounds. Water was cut off yesterday morning

:08:16. > :08:26.after a pipe fractured. But the residents say it is making life

:08:26. > :08:26.

:08:26. > :08:30.very difficult. It has been a major inconvenience. The toilet won't

:08:30. > :08:38.flush, there is no shower. There is a big pile of washing up. I have

:08:38. > :08:41.had to go to my girlfriend's flat to have a shower. The group which

:08:41. > :08:45.manages these apartments have sent this letter to all of the residents.

:08:45. > :08:52.They apologise for any inconvenience but insist the

:08:53. > :09:02.repairs are being carried out as quickly as possible. The company

:09:03. > :09:05.

:09:05. > :09:07.did not want to elaborate any further on the situation. The

:09:07. > :09:14.company has been providing residents with some bottled

:09:14. > :09:17.drinking water. I do not know where the pipe is.

:09:17. > :09:21.it is deep underground or what. The wording of the letter said

:09:21. > :09:31.something about it taking 36 hours to select and waiting for a part.

:09:31. > :09:32.

:09:32. > :09:36.It seems a bit... Complex for just a pipe. After his two days without

:09:36. > :09:46.water, he says hygiene is now a big concern, so he is hoping the water

:09:46. > :09:50.

:09:50. > :09:55.supply is restored sooner rather than later.

:09:55. > :10:04.I bet it was chilly in Scarborough, for the cricket.

:10:04. > :10:12.They were wearing coats, scarves and gloves, supporting the county.

:10:12. > :10:15.A lot of talk about you-know-who. And is to portray -- departure.

:10:15. > :10:18.will be talking about that later. Scientists at Sheffield University

:10:18. > :10:20.have made a groundbreaking discovery, which could help to

:10:20. > :10:24.solve shortages of food across the world. Their pioneering research

:10:24. > :10:26.could make it easier for farmers to grow crops like maize, without

:10:26. > :10:31.relying on fertilisers and pesticides. Danny Carpenter

:10:31. > :10:35.explains. The rolling Yorkshire countryside.

:10:35. > :10:40.It is early in the year but it is starting to fill up with food. Over

:10:40. > :10:45.many generations, farmers and growers selected varieties

:10:45. > :10:49.primarily to increase yield, with complex fertilisers and expensive

:10:49. > :10:53.chemicals to control disease, and production has increased further.

:10:53. > :10:58.But the plants have lost something along the way. The ability to look

:10:58. > :11:04.after themselves. Because plants don't move around, it is easy to

:11:04. > :11:07.forget they are living things. They breathe air. In a sense, they eat,

:11:07. > :11:13.and as scientists are discovering, underground they're very busy

:11:13. > :11:18.indeed. Researchers at the University of Sheffield have

:11:18. > :11:21.studied maize plants and what they have discovered could change the

:11:21. > :11:26.way we farm around the world. The plants emit chemicals from their

:11:26. > :11:31.roots, which attract bacteria. These migrate through the soil to

:11:31. > :11:35.the roots, and manufacture important nutrients for the plant,

:11:35. > :11:41.which but only fertilise it but also protect it from pests and

:11:41. > :11:46.diseases. In Europe and in the west, we don't notice it that much, but

:11:46. > :11:49.there is an imminent threat of food security. One of the main

:11:49. > :11:55.challenges for scientists and policy makers is to safeguard food

:11:55. > :11:58.security. If we can do that in a more sustainable way, we can

:11:58. > :12:03.safeguard food security for future generations. This could be

:12:03. > :12:07.potentially the technology to lead to that. This is not about

:12:07. > :12:11.genetically modified food. It is about breeding the new varieties

:12:11. > :12:15.with ancient strains and will they recovered the abilities that

:12:15. > :12:20.millions of years of evolution had originally given them. It could

:12:20. > :12:27.make sustainable farming possible on an industrial scale. It could

:12:27. > :12:31.help feed the world. Before seven o'clock: York's promotion rivals

:12:31. > :12:34.score two own goals, one on, and one off the pitch How the Mansfield

:12:34. > :12:41.chief exec fell foul of the police, after their match against the

:12:41. > :12:50.Minstermen. And, hundreds raid their attics, as

:12:50. > :13:00.the nation's favourite antiques show comes to Scarborough.

:13:00. > :13:01.

:13:01. > :13:05.Forehead limbs behind the scenes, It is nice to have Fiona on our

:13:05. > :13:09.programme! We were both excited when this man came onto the scene,

:13:09. > :13:14.Ajmal Shahzad seemed to have everything. But then it all went

:13:14. > :13:21.wrong. A mutual parting of the ways, the club announced, he has been

:13:21. > :13:25.sacked, the more planned echo from Yorkshire's For lovers. Nobody

:13:25. > :13:30.disputes his talent. Already, four counties had expressed an interest

:13:30. > :13:33.in him. Dressing-room harmony, but were into the chairman, was at

:13:33. > :13:39.stake. A good day for Yorkshire on the day

:13:39. > :13:48.the sun did not rise at all. Sadly, Anthony McGrath failed to make his

:13:48. > :13:53.century, out for 91. It is great to see him back in form, and Johnny

:13:54. > :13:59.Burstow, out earlier for 182. A lusty blow from Ryan Sidebottom.

:13:59. > :14:05.Yorkshire's that of the platform, surely, for victory. -- Yorkshire

:14:05. > :14:10.setting up the platform. Talk in the crowd was about Ajmal Shahzad.

:14:10. > :14:15.The chairman port no punches. have started very positively, we

:14:15. > :14:21.went to Barbados, we did well, but unfortunately, the situation has

:14:21. > :14:26.arisen again. If a player does not want to be here, and he has made it

:14:26. > :14:32.clear, there is no point putting it off. The think you want to create

:14:32. > :14:37.is a harmonious dressing room, this is now in progress? Yes, we have a

:14:37. > :14:39.harmonious dressing room now. Everybody is locked into the

:14:39. > :14:46.situation that we need to get promotion, they know what they have

:14:46. > :14:50.to achieve. Everybody is happy. These supporters deserve more. Cold

:14:50. > :14:58.Marmite and wetter, summed up by these three happy people. Hear no

:14:58. > :15:04.evil, see no evil, speak no evil. You can bet that they will be there

:15:04. > :15:14.tomorrow. It is a good day to go if the weather holds. Yorkshire have

:15:14. > :15:18.

:15:18. > :15:27.Anthony McGrath took four wickets, exceptional. Leicestershire have

:15:27. > :15:37.been asked to follow on. With a bit of luck, that could lead to

:15:37. > :15:39.

:15:39. > :15:43.Yorkshire's first success of the York City can still dream of

:15:43. > :15:49.returning to the Football League next season, after the first leg of

:15:49. > :15:53.their play-off semi-final last night. They drew 1-1 with Mansfield.

:15:53. > :15:56.It is back to Status quo and all to play for in the return match on

:15:56. > :16:03.Monday. The night was not without controversy inside and outside the

:16:03. > :16:06.stadium. More than 6000 squeezed into

:16:06. > :16:11.Britain christened last night. That told you all you needed to know

:16:11. > :16:16.about the height of York City's promotion hopes. Not everybody

:16:16. > :16:20.enjoyed such a happy evening. The Mansfield chief executive was

:16:20. > :16:23.arrested by North Yorkshire Police outside the stadium while the match

:16:23. > :16:28.was in progress for using threatening words and behaviour. In

:16:28. > :16:32.a statement today, Mansfield said she was reprimanded for a verbal

:16:32. > :16:39.retort to a police officer and that the incident had been blown out of

:16:39. > :16:44.proportion. Exactly how much of the match she missed is not clear. It

:16:44. > :16:52.was a cracker. Especially in the first half. Mansfield's style might

:16:52. > :16:59.not be to everybody's taste, but it is effective. The long throw-in

:16:59. > :17:06.caused havoc more than once. York opened the scoring. But by half-

:17:06. > :17:11.time, the equaliser. An own goal. It stayed 1-1. The second half was

:17:11. > :17:16.much tighter than the first. As a taster of what life might be like

:17:17. > :17:20.in the league for one of these sides, it was gripping stuff.

:17:20. > :17:25.was a tough game, they looked a good side, but we have just done

:17:25. > :17:29.enough. They were good in some parts, but sometimes, we get the

:17:29. > :17:34.ball away a bit cheaply. We take them back to their place and beat

:17:34. > :17:38.them. And so to Mansfield for the rematch on Monday. And then,

:17:39. > :17:46.Wembley, for one of these two great northern clubs, both of whom have

:17:46. > :17:49.been out of the Football League for far too long.

:17:49. > :17:53.Pretty tense. If you are a Yorkshire Day rugby

:17:53. > :17:57.union fan, London might be the place to spend your Bank Holiday

:17:57. > :18:03.weekend, and as your wife has something else to say it! Three of

:18:03. > :18:12.our teams play at Twickenham on Saturday in the showpiece finals.

:18:12. > :18:18.Baildon kick-off at 11 am, and finally, at 3pm, will play against

:18:18. > :18:21.East Grinstead. It is fantastic, it shows the

:18:21. > :18:31.strength of Yorkshire rugby. Other counties will sit up and take

:18:31. > :18:31.

:18:31. > :18:38.notice. It will show we can represent the county, it is great.

:18:38. > :18:43.It is Beldon against Harrow. Nick Robinson-Baker is a diver, we

:18:43. > :18:48.followed him through the ups and downs for a number of years. He has

:18:48. > :18:51.just won silver in the World Series event in Mexico, with his three-

:18:52. > :19:00.metre Synchro partner Chris Mears. They go to the European chubby

:19:00. > :19:06.chips next week, and then, the Olympics -- European Championships.

:19:06. > :19:14.This means everything Simi. It has been a hard year, they have been

:19:14. > :19:20.some great times, some sad Times, and the show's -- this shows we can

:19:20. > :19:23.win medals. This has built up our confidence. With three months to go

:19:23. > :19:31.until the Olympics, I am feeling very confident, and looking forward

:19:31. > :19:36.to it. For so long, Benn was your partner. You developed a team that

:19:36. > :19:42.was almost unbreakable, but it did break. Yes, he had a serious injury

:19:42. > :19:48.at the beginning of 2010. He tore a ligament. That put him out of

:19:48. > :19:53.competition. He tried to get back after the operation, but it did not

:19:53. > :19:59.succeed. We had to look at other variations. That must be tough, the

:19:59. > :20:03.new partner. After you spend several we -- several years

:20:03. > :20:07.competing internationally, we competed at the Beijing Olympics,

:20:07. > :20:15.we are such great mates, so it was like a break-up, but we are still

:20:15. > :20:22.close mates. He is a good lad, he still supports me. The key is to

:20:22. > :20:28.peak at the right talent. Did you build up to the Olympics, or are

:20:28. > :20:32.you just looking at the European Championships first? It is his huge

:20:32. > :20:39.circle we have got to go through, so many events that we have to

:20:39. > :20:42.compete in her. We have had two International tournament, four legs

:20:42. > :20:47.of the World Series, the European Championships and the Olympic

:20:48. > :20:52.trials, before the main event. must give you confidence, the medal.

:20:52. > :20:59.A lot was expected of you in Beijing, it did not quite work, but

:20:59. > :21:08.you on the up. Absolutely. The shows that I am competing with the

:21:08. > :21:12.best athletes in the world a -- fish shows. This shows that we are

:21:12. > :21:16.capable of getting a medal. When you look at the programme, are

:21:16. > :21:24.there any surprises you can put in, what are the judges looking for

:21:24. > :21:28.specific things, specific guides? If there are so many aspects. You

:21:28. > :21:36.have to state which guides you will use before you compete, so we have

:21:36. > :21:40.to list six dives. We recently started using a new forward 4 1/2

:21:41. > :21:49.somersaults. It has gone down fantastically, we were 90 points in

:21:49. > :21:54.Mexico. -- we went. You have got the Olympic rings tattooed, but

:21:54. > :22:01.where is the straight and?! May be fun and then come up I will get

:22:01. > :22:05.one! -- perhaps for London, I will get one!

:22:05. > :22:07.People in Scarborough have been searching their attics and sorting

:22:08. > :22:14.through their junk in the hope of unearthing something rare and

:22:14. > :22:20.valuable. Yes, the Antiques Roadshow has been recording in town

:22:20. > :22:30.today. We have been behind the scenes of one of our most popular

:22:30. > :22:34.

:22:35. > :22:39.and long running series. Art, furniture, and fashion. It can
