:00:07. > :00:10.the programme tonight: The first pictures of a police dog attack.

:00:10. > :00:19.These horrific bite injuries were caused by the animal as the

:00:19. > :00:24.Sheffield woman was hanging out her washing. We speak to her partner.

:00:24. > :00:26.When I came downstairs she was just laid out. The incident has now been

:00:26. > :00:27.referred the incident to the Independent Police Complaints

:00:27. > :00:30.Commission. Also tonight: Spreading the safety

:00:30. > :00:34.message - emotional scenes to support the family of Huddersfield

:00:34. > :00:42.cyclist John Radford, who is in a coma after being knocked off his

:00:42. > :00:47.bike. If this and the campaigning can stop

:00:47. > :00:51.any other family going through what we have been through, and Robbie

:00:51. > :00:55.will have to go through if dad builds through, if that helps anyone

:00:55. > :01:01.else, it will be worth it. What's the long face about? We meet

:01:01. > :01:06.the rare baby settling into her new home in Doncaster.

:01:06. > :01:16.It has been a fine, warm day, but it is clouding over and will be some

:01:16. > :01:20.

:01:20. > :01:25.rain tonight. Our be back later with prosecution after a woman was mauled

:01:25. > :01:29.by one of its dogs as she hung out her washing. Dawn Priestly from

:01:29. > :01:32.Sheffield was attacked by the dog in her own backyard as it chased some

:01:32. > :01:35.suspects through a nearby street. Dawn remains in hospital with

:01:35. > :01:39.serious injuries five days after the incident, and could have lost her

:01:39. > :01:49.arm. Now her partner is calling for police procedures to be reviewed. He

:01:49. > :01:50.

:01:50. > :01:55.has been talking exclusively to Ian White.

:01:55. > :02:00.She was up here, hanging out washing. Mark Jones was still

:02:00. > :02:05.visibly shaken today as he told me how a quiet Sunday afternoon ended

:02:05. > :02:14.with her partner being mauled by a police dog. The thugs jumped over

:02:14. > :02:20.the wall and that wall. By surprise, there was a police dog there are

:02:20. > :02:26.just looking at. It just went for her. There was nothing she could do.

:02:26. > :02:36.What injuries did you suffer? had three bytes. The dog was going

:02:36. > :02:38.

:02:38. > :02:47.for her face. Up here, her bicep. Her elbow, and dine here. Dogs have

:02:47. > :02:55.been an importance to for fighting crime. On Sunday, police handler let

:02:55. > :03:03.a dog of the Leeds. They were trying to find three men who had been

:03:03. > :03:09.involved in a fight. How is she doing? Last night Joe was on oxygen.

:03:09. > :03:14.She couldn't breathe. No one from South Yorkshire police was available

:03:14. > :03:17.for interview today, but they did say they have referred the incident

:03:18. > :03:21.to the room professional standards department as a matter of routine.

:03:22. > :03:26.Legal experts say the force could face prosecution if it is find the

:03:26. > :03:31.dog handler was not in control of the animal. Any owner is expected to

:03:31. > :03:35.ensure that the dog is under control. If the law calls are

:03:35. > :03:41.dangerously out of control, the owner can be liable for any injuries

:03:41. > :03:45.that causes. The police are not in any different position. If they have

:03:45. > :03:50.to conjure their control, they have to ensure that there is no

:03:50. > :03:55.unreasonable risk the members of the public. As dawn faces more surgery

:03:55. > :04:00.on her run tomorrow, markers calling for the use of police dogs in

:04:00. > :04:05.residential areas to be reviewed. South Yorkshire Police is referring

:04:05. > :04:09.the incident today Independent Police Complaints Commission.

:04:09. > :04:12.Hundreds of cyclists in Huddersfield have taken part in a cycle ride to

:04:12. > :04:16.support the family of John Radford, the chairman of the local touring

:04:16. > :04:19.club, who is in a coma after being knocked off his bike last week. His

:04:19. > :04:23.family want to highlight the safety of cyclists on the road,

:04:23. > :04:26.particularly as more people are now getting on their bikes since our

:04:26. > :04:35.success in the London Olympics. So, are we seeing more accidents

:04:35. > :04:38.Certainly that's the case in North Yorkshire, which last year saw the

:04:38. > :04:41.highest number of casualties since 2,000, with more than 300 cyclists

:04:41. > :04:44.injured. In South Yorkshire, 2011 was their worst year, with 317

:04:44. > :04:47.people hurt. It's a different story though in West Yorkshire, where

:04:47. > :04:51.police say accident levels are at their lowest at a time when cycling

:04:51. > :04:55.is gaining in popularity. Well, last night saw a huge turn-out of support

:04:55. > :05:03.for the family of a 69-year-old man who has worked tirelessly to raise

:05:03. > :05:10.the profile of the sport. Dan Johnson was there.

:05:10. > :05:16.I want to say a massive thank you to all for coming. John Radford's

:05:16. > :05:20.daughters addressing the hundred two came to take part in this ride.

:05:20. > :05:28.It is a large turnout for a huge figure in the cycling scene here.

:05:28. > :05:33.This is John doing at 1200 kilometre ride in France a few years ago. It

:05:33. > :05:37.is a week since he was knocked off his bike, just outside

:05:37. > :05:41.Huddersfield. He suffered serious head injuries and was flown to

:05:41. > :05:46.hospital where he is still in a coma. This last week has been

:05:46. > :05:51.horrendous. If this campaigning can stop any other family going through

:05:51. > :05:55.what we have been through this week, and will have to go through in the

:05:55. > :06:00.next few months if tadpoles three, if that helps anyone else it will be

:06:00. > :06:04.worth it. My dad would have been the first organise something like this

:06:04. > :06:07.for somebody else. It is just highlight the importance of road

:06:07. > :06:13.safety. I'm not saying that every driver doesn't think about

:06:13. > :06:19.cyclists, but they need to raise the awareness that cyclists have a right

:06:19. > :06:24.to be on the road like anybody else. Most of these cyclists Noel John and

:06:24. > :06:27.many have ridden alongside him and wanted to show support and stop

:06:27. > :06:32.other cyclists ending up in hospital. The number of people

:06:32. > :06:36.preparing for this ride is a sign of our popular John Radford is. It is a

:06:36. > :06:41.sign of the increasing popularity of cycling, with more people getting on

:06:41. > :06:47.their bikes, there is a risk that more will get knocked off. We are

:06:47. > :06:52.vulnerable because increasing road users, bad roads, and I think we all

:06:52. > :07:00.see the attitude of people. If people were a bit more lenient and

:07:00. > :07:04.forgiving than trying to push past people on a narrow road. This ride

:07:04. > :07:07.is a symbolic gesture with an important message.

:07:07. > :07:10.West Yorkshire Police say they are working with British Cycling and the

:07:10. > :07:14.District Cycle Touring Club to educate all road users to improve

:07:14. > :07:18.safety further - particularly before the Tour De France. We are joined

:07:18. > :07:28.now by Martyn Bolt, who we saw briefly there taking part in the

:07:28. > :07:29.

:07:29. > :07:32.bike ride for John last night. Hi is he? He has had a few breaths

:07:32. > :07:38.on his own, but the surgeons are saying they are still a long way off

:07:38. > :07:45.where they would like to be by now. What happens if your knocked off

:07:45. > :07:49.your bike in terms of insurance? is a bit like skiing insurance. Most

:07:49. > :07:52.cyclists will have third-party liability because an accident, but

:07:52. > :08:02.I'm sure very few would have personal insurance to cover time off

:08:02. > :08:02.

:08:02. > :08:06.work or things like that. Do people know the rules when it comes to

:08:07. > :08:11.cyclists? This is something we probably do need an education

:08:11. > :08:14.campaign. Things have moved on a long way since I did cycling

:08:14. > :08:19.proficiency at school. The suggestion is that if you pass a

:08:19. > :08:23.cyclists you should give them as much room as you would a car. When

:08:23. > :08:31.you did the charity ride, I'm sure you will have noticed how close cars

:08:31. > :08:40.come to you. We are seeing more furniture on the route, islands in

:08:40. > :08:46.the middle of the roads, things like that. Another of the misconceptions

:08:46. > :08:56.is that single file is somehow safer. Neither is a compulsory.

:08:56. > :08:57.

:08:57. > :09:01.Sadly, motorists was shout out to cyclists, single file! But to breast

:09:01. > :09:09.is permissible. It is sociable and gives a greater visibility if you

:09:09. > :09:14.have two people writing, they can be seen easier. What about helmets? You

:09:14. > :09:22.can get confused reading about that. Some industries suggest that in a

:09:22. > :09:26.case of a serious impact at helm at -- Helmut won't help you, but I

:09:26. > :09:28.always wear one. Later on Look North: The West

:09:28. > :09:37.Yorkshire animal charity that's struggling to survive. Why financial

:09:37. > :09:41.problems could force it to close its doors.

:09:41. > :09:45.Tenants in part of the North York Moors say they are stunned and

:09:45. > :09:47.shocked by news that their houses are to be sold and they must move

:09:47. > :09:50.out. Their homes are on the Farndale

:09:50. > :09:52.Estate, which is owned by the Barratt family, best known for their

:09:52. > :09:56.house-building business. Tenants have been sent letters telling them

:09:56. > :09:59.their homes must be sold to pay death duties and they have got to

:09:59. > :10:03.move within two months of any sale. Cathy Killick reports.

:10:03. > :10:08.Of all the beautiful parts of the North York Moors, Farndale is famous

:10:08. > :10:11.for its unspoiled charm. The estate has been traditionally farmed and

:10:11. > :10:18.the landscape remains rural and sparsely populated, and largely by

:10:18. > :10:27.the Barrett family. The fortune was made building a different type of

:10:27. > :10:31.estate, -- his sons must now pay millions in inheritance tax after

:10:31. > :10:35.the death of the founder of the business. The Barrett brothers say

:10:35. > :10:41.they have to sell 13 properties occupied by tenants. Landers can

:10:41. > :10:44.sell houses at any time, but here in Farndale it is extremely difficult

:10:44. > :10:53.for the tenants to find alternative accommodation and many are very

:10:53. > :10:57.upset by the news. For 14 years George has run the cafe. His four

:10:57. > :11:00.children were born here and go to the local school. When he received a

:11:00. > :11:08.letter telling him his home and business were to be put on the

:11:08. > :11:16.market, it was a bolt from the blue. Just numb. Shock. What are you going

:11:16. > :11:20.to do? Doom them. I suppose I would hope that somebody might come along

:11:20. > :11:26.and say I will buy at and you carry on as you are, which would be a

:11:26. > :11:35.brilliant scenario, but whether that will happen. Are you in a position

:11:35. > :11:42.to buy? I doubt I could get a mortgage age. I am in my 60s, so it

:11:42. > :11:47.is difficult. Estate agents handling the sale say: It is not a decision

:11:47. > :11:50.that has been taken lightly and they acknowledge that the news is very

:11:50. > :11:53.upsetting and disruptive tenants. They are offering half-price rental

:11:53. > :11:58.and the houses on the market. Tenants are being offered the chance

:11:58. > :12:03.to buy their houses and those that can are happier with the situation.

:12:03. > :12:07.Those, like George, who can't, or facing a huge disruption they

:12:07. > :12:10.neither wanted or expected. In other news, a murder

:12:10. > :12:13.investigation has been launched after a man died in Scarborough late

:12:13. > :12:17.last night. Police were called to Eastborough after reports of an

:12:17. > :12:20.assault and the man, who was in his 30s, died at the scene shortly after

:12:20. > :12:24.they arrived. Four local men were arrested on Queen's Terrace. North

:12:24. > :12:27.Yorkshire Police say they want to reassure the community that they are

:12:27. > :12:31.not looking for anyone else. A 26-year-old man was arrested last

:12:31. > :12:34.night on the M62 in West Yorkshire after a handgun and ammunition were

:12:34. > :12:39.found in his car. Armed police officers followed the BMW after a

:12:39. > :12:44.tip-off from another force. It was stopped around 7.00pm heading west

:12:44. > :12:48.towards Junction 26. The man is being held on suspicion of firearms

:12:48. > :12:52.offences. An animal charity in West Yorkshire

:12:52. > :12:55.says it could be forced to close because it is owed money by another

:12:55. > :12:58.charity which has now been suspended from operating. The Charity

:12:58. > :13:00.Commission is investigating The Dove Trust and stopped its online

:13:00. > :13:05.donations web page following concerns about its financial

:13:05. > :13:15.situation. That's left the West Yorkshire Animals In Need charity in

:13:15. > :13:17.

:13:17. > :13:25.Ilkley with a pretty big shortfall. Anna Crossley reports.

:13:25. > :13:30.Tommy Townsend's Hysen Ilkley isn't a 38 rescue cats. Her charity has

:13:30. > :13:35.saved the latest -- the lives of 900 animals over the years. Hers is one

:13:35. > :13:41.of many charities that seems to have lost money through the charity

:13:41. > :13:47.giving website. We run our charity on a shoe string. It has affected us

:13:47. > :13:52.very badly. We are in real danger of having to close down. 18 months ago

:13:52. > :14:02.Tommy Hunter has been signed up to charity giving .co .uk to make it

:14:02. > :14:03.

:14:03. > :14:09.easier for people to donate online. It is run by The Dove Trust. They

:14:09. > :14:13.don't charge a fee, just a small percentage of any gift aid. West

:14:13. > :14:17.Yorkshire animals in need has not received any pledges since March.

:14:17. > :14:22.For some reason, The Dove Trust has not been honouring its side of the

:14:22. > :14:25.deal. Once we find out how serious the concerns were, we put an interim

:14:25. > :14:34.manager in place to take over at the dogs trust and take over the

:14:34. > :14:38.management of the websites. He will look at the concerns of the

:14:38. > :14:44.finances. It turns out the Charity commission has been concerned about

:14:44. > :14:48.the dogs trust for some time, much to the annoyance of Tommy. I feel

:14:48. > :14:51.absolutely disgusted with them, because we wouldn't be in this

:14:51. > :14:56.position if the Charity Commission had acted when they should've done.

:14:56. > :14:59.They have known about this problem for four years. The Charity

:14:59. > :15:02.Commission says that some charities have received their money, but

:15:02. > :15:06.others haven't. It is advising people who think they have been

:15:06. > :15:16.affected to log on to the charity giving website, which neither has

:15:16. > :15:16.

:15:16. > :15:19.updates and advice. -- which neither Before 7.00pm: The new challenge

:15:19. > :15:21.facing Keith Senior - why the Rugby League legend is putting himself

:15:21. > :15:27.through the wringer for a good cause.

:15:27. > :15:37.The new arrival who is wowing visitors at the Yorkshire Wildlife

:15:37. > :15:38.

:15:38. > :15:43.the end of a busy or stressful day reaching for a glass of wine or beer

:15:43. > :15:46.in order to unwind? There are concerns that middle-aged,

:15:46. > :15:50.middle-class women are drinking too much alcohol and it could be causing

:15:50. > :15:53.devastating health problems. Our next guests, Sarah Turner and Lucy

:15:53. > :15:57.Rocca from Yorkshire, had their own battles with drink and have now

:15:57. > :16:07.written a book to help other women who are struggling to give up the

:16:07. > :16:10.

:16:10. > :16:17.bottle. Sarah, what happened to you? I got quite a late stage with that,

:16:17. > :16:20.were I had lots to most bog on the cornflakes. What we are trying to do

:16:20. > :16:27.is intervene really, for women who are slightly worried about the

:16:27. > :16:32.drinking. It is women who are having a problem and they are concerned,

:16:32. > :16:41.just drinking a little bit too much. We want them to read the book

:16:41. > :16:49.and see how they feel. How many units would you consuming a week?

:16:49. > :16:55.to about 150, which sounds horrific. That was a bottle of wine and night

:16:55. > :17:00.and a few extra drinks at the weekend. I run a website that is

:17:00. > :17:04.aimed at women like myself and Sarah. It is very common for normal

:17:04. > :17:10.women, professional with kids, hard drinking a bottle or two of wine and

:17:10. > :17:17.night. It is not as unusual as people might think. It can be a form

:17:17. > :17:23.of stress management, I suppose. Yes, and in some cases it is an

:17:23. > :17:27.emotional dependency. People drink self-confidence when white. Over the

:17:27. > :17:31.years becomes a crutch. Before you know it, it can be something that

:17:31. > :17:38.you are aware that you don't want to live without. Do people know when

:17:38. > :17:46.they have a problem? Don't people who are consumed by alcohol enjoy a

:17:46. > :17:50.drink anyway? Gets to a stage where it has become a habit more than an

:17:50. > :17:59.enjoyment. It is a ritual, a reward. Harrogate Sanctuary, my

:17:59. > :18:06.organisation, is tailored for middle age, middle-class women. They said

:18:06. > :18:09.they would like to talk about it, but feel very alone. Lucy's website

:18:09. > :18:19.has been tremendous because it allows women to talk anonymously.

:18:19. > :18:21.

:18:21. > :18:25.There is a stigma. How can you help? Us coming on here helps. We are

:18:25. > :18:30.fairly normal woman, I think, people can relate to us. We are both mums

:18:30. > :18:40.and both had this problem. We got into pretty dire straits with that.

:18:40. > :18:42.

:18:42. > :18:46.Rather than get that far, it could be a good idea to intervene.

:18:46. > :18:50.Sport now and, if you are planning to go and watch Leeds Rhinos take on

:18:50. > :18:53.Hull KR at Headingley next week, you'll see a certain former player

:18:53. > :18:56.finishing probably the toughest 13 hours of his sporting life. In

:18:56. > :18:59.keeping with Rugby League tradition, they're calling it Quest 13, and

:18:59. > :19:03.Paul Ogden has been to investigate. He would have thought Keith Senior

:19:03. > :19:07.had punished himself enough already, having done 13 seasons with Leeds

:19:07. > :19:10.Rhinos, to say nothing of his exploits in Sheffield in

:19:10. > :19:15.Huddersfield before. Clearly it wasn't enough. He is now getting

:19:15. > :19:20.ready to put his body on the line by running, writing and drawing himself

:19:20. > :19:25.to the Leeds Rhinos's next home match, all on the same day.

:19:25. > :19:32.doing a week on Friday, before the Hull KR game. The charity needs

:19:32. > :19:37.donations. Me and the trustee of the foundation decided to come up with a

:19:37. > :19:43.challenge. And what a challenge days. Accompanied by Bill Bowman,

:19:43. > :19:53.Keith Senior will dry -- will start on the day with a 30 mile run to the

:19:53. > :19:54.

:19:54. > :19:58.lead suburbs. It will be 113 kilometres on a bike, 60 odd miles.

:19:58. > :20:06.To finish, 13 miles on a rowing machine outside the club shop, in

:20:06. > :20:10.full view of fans arriving. motto of the foundation is changing

:20:10. > :20:18.lives through sport. Without sport I would never choose -- I would not

:20:18. > :20:24.have achieved what I have achieved. We need to raise vital funds. This

:20:24. > :20:29.is a challenge that we have come up with. Me being the plonker that I

:20:30. > :20:36.am, I said I would get involved! the aim of Quest 13 is to change

:20:36. > :20:39.less privileged life through sport, Keith Senior remains the kind of

:20:39. > :20:43.rugby league club he would not want to change one bit.

:20:43. > :20:47.On to football now and Leeds United fought back from a goal down to beat

:20:47. > :20:50.Chesterfield in the first round of the Capital One Cup. Owen Doyle gave

:20:50. > :20:54.the visitors a shock lead in the 19th minute at Elland Road. But

:20:54. > :20:59.Michael Brown equalised for Leeds ten minutes later. Four minutes

:20:59. > :21:02.later Dominic Poleon grabbed what proved to be the winner. The home

:21:02. > :21:05.side held on for the victory in front of a crowd of more than

:21:05. > :21:09.17,000. The draw for the second round of the

:21:09. > :21:12.Capital One Cup has been made within the last hour or so. Rotherham

:21:12. > :21:15.United have landed a plum tie. They are away at Aston Villa. Barnsley

:21:15. > :21:18.take on Southampton. Doncaster face Leeds in a Yorkshire derby.

:21:18. > :21:22.Huddersfield will play Charlton. Games will be played in the week

:21:22. > :21:25.beginning 26th August. Three of Yorkshire's elite rowers

:21:25. > :21:28.have been selected in the GB Team for the World Rowing Championships

:21:28. > :21:33.in Korea later this month. 2012 Olympic Gold medallist Andy Triggs
