:00:04. > :00:08.Welcome to Look North and on the programme tonight... Killing our
:00:08. > :00:11.sea—life with plastic — a BBC investigation reveals just how
:00:11. > :00:21.damaging the man—made litter really is and not just to birds and marine
:00:21. > :00:27.life. When it is broken down becomes micro—plastic and it gets into birds
:00:27. > :00:29.and fish and inside us. It is a disaster.
:00:29. > :00:33.Also tonight... Wakefield becomes the first city in Yorkshire to allow
:00:33. > :00:35.super—strength booze to be banned from shop shelves.
:00:35. > :00:38.And find out later what this streetlight, this litter bin and
:00:38. > :00:45.this square postbox all have in common with Yorkshire!
:00:45. > :00:51.It has been a very unsettled start with some thunderstorms. It was
:00:51. > :01:08.looking very dirk earlier this afternoon but what is the week ahead
:01:08. > :01:11.looking like? Find out later on. First tonight, a warning that the
:01:11. > :01:17.amount of plastic waste in the sea is not only posing a risk to marine
:01:17. > :01:19.life, but it could also be getting into the human food chain. A study
:01:19. > :01:22.by a leading marine expert shows that as plastic waste breaks down,
:01:22. > :01:26.it's consumed by fish and other sea creatures which means there's a good
:01:26. > :01:29.chance that we're eating it as well. The BBC's Inside Out programme has
:01:29. > :01:32.been investigating this problem and looking at how it's being dealt with
:01:32. > :01:41.here in Yorkshire. Phil Bodmer reports. The spectacular Europe
:01:41. > :01:45.share coastline has become a damping ground for waste with plastic than
:01:45. > :01:53.the culprit. —— Europe should coastline. These volunteers help
:01:53. > :01:57.clean—up. Will have on this for around 20 years and the main reason
:01:57. > :02:05.we do that is to try and collect data on what we are finding. 70% of
:02:05. > :02:11.litter found this plastic and when it is broken down, it can be
:02:11. > :02:15.mistaken for food by fish. This money expert husband died and
:02:15. > :02:21.will's oceans for 40 years and he believes plastic waste is an
:02:21. > :02:26.increasing problem. Look at this traffic in and you do realise that
:02:26. > :02:29.inside is another huge plastic bag full of sand and this is incredibly
:02:29. > :02:38.hazardous to the environment. —— traffic cone. Researchers think that
:02:38. > :02:41.every one of these birds will have plastic stomachs and experts say it
:02:41. > :02:50.is causing many of them to start to death. Look at this. It would have
:02:50. > :02:52.anonymous effect on my help. The women research centres are lots of
:02:52. > :02:59.plastic is desirable into human eye. There are attempting to
:02:59. > :03:04.address the problem and it took to appear in direct is introduced by
:03:04. > :03:11.2016 will encourage people to clean—up. —— directives. I have
:03:11. > :03:19.joined by the presenter of the programme Paul Rose. It was a really
:03:19. > :03:25.beautiful scene and search a dent. Yes, I warned the story of these
:03:25. > :03:29.birds and they have a feeding habit which means they can plastic. It
:03:29. > :03:37.brought it home in such a powerful way. They can —— they consume
:03:37. > :03:42.plastic. When I cut that first bird open, to see the large bits of
:03:42. > :03:47.plastic popping out of it, it stopped me cold. You spent a
:03:47. > :03:53.lifetime diving and you have seen a big increase in plastic. Where is it
:03:53. > :03:58.coming from? It is coming from us. It is such an essential product and
:03:58. > :04:01.we love it but we still have not worked out what to do with that
:04:01. > :04:06.women are finished with that. Sadly, a ladder that goes in the
:04:06. > :04:10.sea. You can see the damage of dollars. The film is fantastic and
:04:10. > :04:16.the bit I liked was the clean—up operation in Scarborough beach that
:04:16. > :04:21.YouTube partum. What did you do? Walked along and it was clean beach
:04:21. > :04:28.and every single step you can pick up a piece of plastic bag, a piece
:04:28. > :04:33.of the bottle. Profound lack —— large bits of horrible rope and
:04:33. > :04:42.chain and we joked kept —— just kept finding things and then one hour I
:04:42. > :04:46.collected nine kilos of waste plus an enormous large plastic cable. It
:04:46. > :04:52.is local people and something in the region and it has a global impact.
:04:52. > :04:56.And talking of local areas you've visited a bird colony near
:04:56. > :05:01.Bridlington. What was amazing was the way those words —— birds were
:05:01. > :05:07.nesting. It says allot about our relationship with the animals. The
:05:07. > :05:16.gannets fly a long way and they died very deeply but what they pick up is
:05:16. > :05:21.often plastic. —— a lot. It is a beautiful colony of birds and it
:05:21. > :05:25.says allot about the energy. When you look closely with binoculars
:05:25. > :05:33.every single one of them has amassed made of plastic. It was in no —— an
:05:33. > :05:36.emotional moment. There is a good chance this is making it into the
:05:36. > :05:44.food chain but what is being done to tackle it? People are becoming more
:05:44. > :05:47.aware that in 2016 is a new European direct which means we have to be
:05:47. > :05:52.legally more responsible when we handle plastic waste and between now
:05:52. > :06:01.and then we must take the wrecked action and take responsibility for
:06:01. > :06:14.the plastic waste. —— direct action. Astro message and the fantastic
:06:14. > :06:18.film. Thank you. And you can see more on this
:06:18. > :06:24.on Inside Out on BBC One tonight at 7.30PM.
:06:24. > :06:27.A new scheme, aimed at tackling alcohol abuse in Wakefield, has been
:06:27. > :06:30.approved today by the district's council. Under the plan,
:06:30. > :06:32.off—licences will voluntarily remove super—strength products from their
:06:32. > :06:36.shelves. The council says it's part of a wider strategy that will be
:06:36. > :06:38.good for everyone but others have questioned whether shops will
:06:38. > :06:42.sign—up and whether problem drinkers will be deterred. Joe Inwood went to
:06:42. > :06:45.meet one man who says higher prices wouldn't have stopped his problem. I
:06:45. > :06:50.was deceitful, I was a thief and the just leached of people. Whoever I
:06:50. > :06:57.came into contact with I was thinking about satisfying this
:06:57. > :07:01.need, this craving that I had. Only alcohol could take that away. I'd
:07:01. > :07:07.like stories like this that the proposals are aiming to tackle. The
:07:07. > :07:11.proposals are voluntary and it would see local off—licences take product
:07:11. > :07:16.like these of the shelves. While acknowledging it is not a total
:07:16. > :07:21.solution, experts say it will make a difference. Retailers will
:07:21. > :07:26.experience less anti—social behaviour. It will be good for the
:07:26. > :07:30.local people because they will see less anti—social behaviour on the
:07:30. > :07:36.street stop ultimately it is good for people with alcohol problems. It
:07:36. > :07:42.is not the principles but the practicalities that are different.
:07:42. > :07:48.On bigger retailers are involved, smaller numbers say they cannot
:07:48. > :07:51.afford to react. With a big supermarkets lead, little retailers
:07:51. > :07:56.will follow. We must follow the lead. We cannot afford to lose
:07:56. > :08:04.custom because if we cannot sell them, people will go to the big
:08:04. > :08:10.supermarkets. But for Frances, with the help of Alcoholics Anonymous who
:08:10. > :08:16.has been sober for three decades, the proposals mean more than not. If
:08:16. > :08:25.the price had tripled over did still paid it. I would have proved more of
:08:25. > :08:29.my own. It did not stop me. I would have sounded from somewhere and I
:08:29. > :08:37.would've found the money —— found the money from somewhere. While some
:08:37. > :08:40.people say removing the super—strength alcohol from the
:08:40. > :08:51.shelves will not solve the problem, the local council says it is a step
:08:52. > :08:55.in the right direction. Police have named a Halifax man who
:08:55. > :08:57.died in an accident in the Lake District over the weekend.
:08:58. > :09:00.67—year—old Christopher Connell fell around 100 feet in woodland near
:09:01. > :09:04.Keswick on Saturday afternoon. His family has been informed and the
:09:04. > :09:09.details have been passed to the coroner. Police say there are no
:09:09. > :09:11.suspicious circumstances. The Sheffield Wednesday footballer
:09:11. > :09:15.Gary Madine has denied punching a man unconscious in a city centre
:09:15. > :09:18.nightclub in March last year. Giving evidence for his defence in his
:09:18. > :09:21.trial at Leeds, Mr Madine said he had been speaking to the man
:09:21. > :09:25.concerned in the Viper Room earlier and had seen him being hit. But Mr
:09:25. > :09:28.Madine said he had definitely not been the attacker. The striker
:09:28. > :09:31.denies a further charge of causing grievous bodily harm to another
:09:31. > :09:40.clubgoer in the Paris Bar in Sheffield five weeks earlier.
:09:40. > :09:43.A football fan accused of punching a West Yorkshire police horse has
:09:43. > :09:46.denied violent disorder. 45—year—old Barry Rogerson from Northumberland
:09:46. > :09:48.was charged after trouble flared up when Newcastle United lost 3—0 at
:09:48. > :09:51.home against their arch—rivals Sunderland in April. The horse
:09:51. > :09:54.called Bud, of West Yorkshire's mounted section, didn't suffer any
:09:54. > :09:57.lasting harm. Rogerson was granted bail by magistrates and will appear
:09:57. > :10:05.at Newcastle Crown Court later this month.
:10:05. > :10:08.An agreement's been signed which will see nearly 97% of homes and
:10:08. > :10:10.businesses in West Yorkshire get super—fast broadband. Leeds,
:10:10. > :10:14.Bradford, Calderdale and Wakefield Councils have agreed to help roll
:10:14. > :10:17.the scheme out to areas that weren't originally covered in BT's plans.
:10:17. > :10:20.The project which will cost almost £22 million should see faster
:10:20. > :10:31.internet speeds across the county by autumn 2015. Later in the programme.
:10:31. > :10:43.A reporter was in a picturesque village district. Some campaigners
:10:43. > :10:55.in the spillage at campaigning but the landlord says it is not the best
:10:55. > :10:58.way forward for the pub. The high—speed rail project HS2 has
:10:58. > :11:01.come under fire from MPs. The scheme's due to provide superfast
:11:01. > :11:04.trains linking London to Leeds and Sheffield in 20 years' time. The
:11:04. > :11:07.Public Accounts Committee says spiralling costs are jeopardising
:11:07. > :11:10.any benefits of the project. It also claims that the Government's case is
:11:10. > :11:13.based on "fragile numbers" and "out of date data", makes "assumptions
:11:13. > :11:16.which do not reflect real life" and has "no evidence it would aid
:11:16. > :11:24.regional economies". So what's been the reaction to that report here in
:11:24. > :11:29.Yorkshire? Here's Emma Glasbey. It will be in Europe sure in 20 years
:11:29. > :11:34.time. That's if it goes to plan for the government. But today the
:11:34. > :11:40.arguments about a chest to have erupted again. —— in Berkshire.
:11:40. > :11:46.Experts say the benefits are dwindling as costs spiral. Gordon
:11:46. > :11:49.lives in Windows spurred next to where the high—speed relying
:11:49. > :12:00.would—be. He is trying to sell his home. We have had a few people come
:12:00. > :12:05.round and normally we would have sold it. I have had to reduce my
:12:05. > :12:08.property price and it is still not selling. People's livelihoods are
:12:08. > :12:13.being affected and the government is not helping. There is plenty of
:12:13. > :12:18.opposition from the thick villages like this one but the transport
:12:18. > :12:23.secretary argues that High—Speed two is vitally important for places like
:12:23. > :12:27.Leeds and Sheffield. He says we need to attract businesses to cities in
:12:27. > :12:50.Berkshire and to do that, we need new connections. —— Europe sure.
:12:50. > :12:55.Real needs to be very competitive and do not think upgrading the
:12:55. > :13:03.current network is sufficient. If we want to be up there in the top ten
:13:03. > :13:17.we have to be as good. Residence are planning to appeal to councillors
:13:17. > :13:20.face—to—face later this week. Campaigners who fought to save their
:13:20. > :13:23.village pub from being sold are celebrating this evening after the
:13:23. > :13:26.deal was blocked, clearing the way for them to buy it. Villagers in
:13:26. > :13:30.Bamford in the Peak District feared the Angler's Rest would close and be
:13:30. > :13:33.converted to flats but now the owner has agreed to sell to them. However
:13:34. > :13:38.the existing landlord says they won't be able to make a success of
:13:38. > :13:41.it. Dan Johnson is there for us now. It has been a long campaign to save
:13:41. > :13:44.this pub and there are celebrations in this village tonight although not
:13:44. > :13:49.here. The campaigners who fought to save that has been —— say it has
:13:49. > :13:53.been a test case to prove that communities would be able to save
:13:53. > :14:00.their local pub, but it has also local —— opened up some deep
:14:00. > :14:03.divisions within the community. Some people say winning this pub in the
:14:03. > :14:09.future is not the best way of safeguarding its future. Down to
:14:09. > :14:13.work planning their next move, these campaigners fought long and hard to
:14:13. > :14:17.stop the pub being sold and they have allowed themselves a brief
:14:17. > :14:22.celebration. We were absolutely delighted, it was unbelievable to be
:14:22. > :14:28.a must. Some of us were thinking of was a joke, you know, it was
:14:28. > :14:33.fantastic. Instrument —— statement, the owner said it is clear the local
:14:33. > :14:39.community feel passionately about taking ownership of the pub.
:14:39. > :14:42.Consequently in the days since the original sale was agreed at the end
:14:42. > :14:45.of August and in the wake of considerable campaigning by the
:14:45. > :14:51.community, we have worked to rescind the sale agreement. However the
:14:51. > :14:53.existing tenant landlord says not everyone in the village supports the
:14:53. > :14:58.plan and he feels they will not be able to run the pub successfully. I
:14:58. > :15:04.think within the year, they will realise they cannot make it because
:15:04. > :15:10.you have got electricity, you have got gas, you have got all of this
:15:10. > :15:16.and all of the council tax, all of that. You have to start refurbishing
:15:16. > :15:23.because you have to change the Windows, you have to get rid of the
:15:23. > :15:30.dam, it is an investment. —— you have to get rid of the damp. It puts
:15:30. > :15:36.the pressure back on and it is up to you to put your money where your
:15:36. > :15:42.mouth is. Can you do it? It is a small community and we have to step
:15:42. > :15:48.up to the multi—million pound challenge. It shows how determined
:15:48. > :15:55.we are to make the project work and I think we can definitely make a
:15:55. > :15:57.success of it. The pub will become a community pub even of the village
:15:57. > :16:02.remains divided. Campaigners see this as it triumph of the community
:16:02. > :16:08.over commerce and they should start pulling their first point in
:16:08. > :16:13.November. Plenty of work to be done before
:16:13. > :16:18.then and the campaign group say they want to invite everyone here. The
:16:18. > :16:21.plan to put a down one end, served food through the day and they want
:16:21. > :16:26.to put a post office in here as well. They are celebrating this
:16:26. > :16:30.victory tonight. They say they have saved the pub for the community. In
:16:30. > :16:34.any of the regulars feel this is not the right way forward on the group
:16:34. > :16:39.does not represent the people who use the pub and will keep it alive.
:16:39. > :16:47.They were happy for the planned sale which was due to have gone ahead, to
:16:47. > :16:57.have gone ahead. Buy them a pint! They are ignoring you. I cannot
:16:57. > :17:01.afford one! By Matt before 7pm, the streets paved with gold, we tell you
:17:01. > :17:12.how all these things have a Europe sure connection. —— Yorkshire
:17:12. > :17:16.connection. I did something I have not done in years. I went to look
:17:16. > :17:22.but while much standing up and I was in the wrong end of the ground. Can
:17:22. > :17:38.is a the things that you do to keep the boss happy are beyond me! Not a
:17:38. > :17:41.good afternoon. It's an interesting time for
:17:41. > :17:43.Sheffield United fans and their club. Chairman Kevin McCabe
:17:43. > :17:47.announced details of a new co—owner last week. And Saudi Arabian Prince
:17:47. > :17:50.Abdullah was in South Yorkshire on Saturday for the derby against
:17:50. > :17:53.Rotherham. I caught up with him ahead of the game and you're warned
:17:53. > :17:55.this report does contain some flash photography. While now and why
:17:55. > :18:02.Sheffield United? I love English well. I have been a fan for years. I
:18:02. > :18:10.wanted to invest in a championship team and take them forward. When
:18:10. > :18:16.Kevin met me and talk to me about the history of the club the more I
:18:16. > :18:26.read about it the more I like that. I am here now. He could have sold me
:18:26. > :18:35.half of the club for £1. I have to invest a good amount of money.
:18:35. > :18:49.Because Arab names are suited to get back to the Premier league. —— our
:18:49. > :18:54.aims. It is undoubtedly a big step forward. Agents, even the fans will
:18:54. > :19:04.be expecting you to go out and splash the cash. That is not the
:19:04. > :19:09.case. We will work hard. We will have enough money and we need the
:19:09. > :19:17.support of the fans but we are very optimistic about the investment. The
:19:17. > :19:25.keys sustainability. If we don't get promoted from league one, it's not
:19:25. > :19:30.going to be a straightforward line, there will be ups and downs and you
:19:30. > :19:43.must be with that. You must adapt your plans and be close to the team
:19:44. > :19:47.and do what is necessary. Off the pitch, there's renewed hope
:19:47. > :19:51.for Sheffield United, but what about on the field? They made the short
:19:51. > :19:54.trip to Rotherham on Saturday for a South Yorkshire derby that see—sawed
:19:54. > :19:56.one way, then the other. Ian Bucknell has more. Quick thinking
:19:56. > :19:59.and quick feet so it Sheffield United slipped through the defence
:19:59. > :20:08.and take the lead. But the Rotherham manager shuffled his pack at
:20:08. > :20:14.half—time pulling out an ace. A late challenge gave this penalty and it
:20:14. > :20:19.was a vicious strike. The comeback was complete when Robert Wilson
:20:19. > :20:29.picked out the bottom corner. Rotherham triumphed 3—1. It is not
:20:29. > :20:34.one for the squeamish. That cannot be comfortable. The goalkeeper was
:20:34. > :20:41.sent off and Bradford ran away with the game. James Meredith made the
:20:41. > :20:49.cross and after half—time, came the gift. Derek Thompson completed the
:20:49. > :20:56.aerial assault. The great start to the season continues.
:20:56. > :21:01.Chesterfield's March —— Mark Richardson showed some fancy
:21:01. > :21:08.footwork. Accrington followed up and they are no two points clear in the
:21:08. > :21:25.league. Weak defending let Wimbledon in and the men from Munster
:21:25. > :21:29.disappointed in the performance. Last week we told you about the bid
:21:29. > :21:32.to include squash as an Olympic sport in 2020, with support from
:21:32. > :21:35.Yorkshire's top players. But the International Olympic Committee has
:21:35. > :21:38.now voted for wrestling to make a return. It means squash and baseball
:21:38. > :21:43.won't be a part of the games, which will be held in Tokyo.
:21:43. > :21:46.The Super League Dream Team was unveiled in Huddersfield today and
:21:46. > :21:49.with good reason. No fewer than five Huddersfield Giants players have
:21:49. > :21:52.been named in this year's elite 13. Brett Ferres, Eorl Crabtree, Leroy
:21:52. > :21:55.Cudjoe, Danny Brough and Shaun Lunt have all been recognised after their
:21:55. > :22:00.club lifted the League Leaders Shield.
:22:00. > :22:09.And a reminder that you can watch the Super League Show on BBC One
:22:10. > :22:12.tonight at 11:35PM. Aston Villa striker Gabriel
:22:12. > :22:16.Agbonlahor is to apologise to the One Direction star Louis Tomlinson
:22:16. > :22:20.for a tackle that left him sick on the touchline. He was playing in a
:22:20. > :22:23.charity match at Celtic Park when he was knocked to the ground. He was
:22:23. > :22:27.forced to leave the field but his "manager for the day" Martin O'Neill
:22:27. > :22:30.said he was OK afterwards. Louis is from South Yorkshire and has signed
:22:30. > :22:42.for Doncaster Rovers on a non—contract basis. And you happen
:22:42. > :22:52.worried about him but he OK. I must apologise because the fans will be
:22:52. > :22:56.up in arms. What do these things have in common?
:22:56. > :23:00.Yes, they are items that we see on the street every day but they were
:23:00. > :23:04.also all the brainchildren of one man
:23:04. > :23:06.who died four years ago, started as a silversmith but ended up designing
:23:06. > :23:09.many items of so—called street furniture which have become familiar
:23:09. > :23:13.sights throughout Britain. Now his work is going on show in a new
:23:13. > :23:16.exhibition in his home city. Danny Carpenter has been to look round it
:23:16. > :23:19.with David Mellor's son. There are many things in everyday
:23:19. > :23:23.life that we just take for granted but if they are bare, then someone

:23:45. > :23:49.and nothing more than that. There will be millions of people who are
:23:49. > :23:56.eternally grateful for the structure in West London. My father got a
:23:56. > :23:59.government commission to have a redesign of a bus shelter and to
:24:00. > :24:07.come up with the new design for the bus shelter and this was the time of

:24:10. > :24:18.needed to be new and have a fresh look. Some of them were not so
:24:18. > :24:23.successful, the square postbox. Often, people get fixed on the shape
:24:23. > :24:27.and they associate that shape with a function and the design of my
:24:27. > :24:30.father, although it made it twice as efficient as a round version, people
:24:30. > :24:35.did not like the square shaped because they were accustomed to the

:25:03. > :25:09.you can go to any town in Britain and see his legacy everywhere. It is
:25:09. > :25:15.funny. I am always stopping at red lights but I do not necessarily
:25:15. > :25:18.think of my father! Whatever happened to all the square postbox
:25:18. > :25:30.is? That's what I would like to know. You got lost. I heard about
:25:30. > :25:36.that. It's not the first time. It was just a wrong turn. 18 miles. I
:25:36. > :25:44.can't believe you are still standing. These are some pictures
:25:44. > :25:54.that came in this weekend. This valley looking beautiful with some
:25:54. > :25:58.mist and fog. The last one that shows some threatening skies to the
:25:58. > :25:59.north—east of Leeds. There were some thunderstorms around today. Keep
:25:59. > :26:13.your pictures coming in. For tomorrow, there will be some fog
:26:13. > :26:20.towards the coast. That nasty little system will bring strong gusts of
:26:20. > :26:26.wind. Further west, it should not be too bad and the Pennines should have
:26:26. > :26:29.the best of the weather where it will be bright and dry. Fairly big
:26:29. > :26:35.thunderstorms have dropped hail and thunder and light thing in places.
:26:35. > :26:42.Temperatures will gradually drop away from this will cause the show
:26:42. > :26:49.was to lose the intensity. Temperatures will fall tonight as
:26:49. > :26:59.low as seven degrees. The sun will rise at 6:30am tomorrow. Tomorrow
:26:59. > :27:07.will see one or two showers and they will gradually fizzle out.
:27:07. > :27:10.Elsewhere, after a dry and bright start it will gradually cloud over
