:00:09. > :00:13.Welcome to Monday's Look North. Tonight, new hope for finding Ben

:00:14. > :00:17.Needham. His mother believes he will be found alive after the discovery

:00:18. > :00:22.of a young girl on a gypsy site in Greece.

:00:23. > :00:28.I do believe he is out there and it is just a matter of time. With this

:00:29. > :00:33.press coverage we have had in the UK and in Greece, we could get a

:00:34. > :00:35.breakthrough now and get some more information.

:00:36. > :00:37.We'll hear more from Ben's mother Kerry later in the programme. Also

:00:38. > :00:41.tonight. A 25`year`old man's held by police

:00:42. > :00:45.in York after the murder of a woman in the city last night.

:00:46. > :00:51.More than 6,000 runners take part in the first Yorkshire Marathon in

:00:52. > :00:54.memory of Jane Tomlinson. In sport, Sheffield United still

:00:55. > :00:58.want Nigel Clough as manager, but are no closer to a deal.

:00:59. > :01:01.And, we'll have the key action from the weekend's football, including

:01:02. > :01:07.one of the best individual goals you'll see all season, which helped

:01:08. > :01:14.Barnsley to victory. This is the same this afternoon,

:01:15. > :01:15.once the morning rain cleared, it brightened up nicely. I will have

:01:16. > :01:29.the details later. Hello, thank you for joining us.

:01:30. > :01:32.First tonight, the mother of missing Sheffield toddler Ben Needham has

:01:33. > :01:35.told Look North she believes it's only a matter of time before he's

:01:36. > :01:39.found alive. It follows the discovery of a four`year`old girl at

:01:40. > :01:42.a gypsy camp in Greece. Ben, who is from Sheffield, was just 21 months

:01:43. > :01:46.old when he vanished on the island of Kos in 1991. In the latest

:01:47. > :01:49.incident, the girl, known only as Maria, was abducted and found at a

:01:50. > :01:53.camp between Farsala and Larissa. Some witnesses claim to have seen

:01:54. > :01:57.Ben in that area shortly after he disappeared. In a moment, we'll hear

:01:58. > :02:05.from Kerry, but first, here's our reporter, Emma Glasbey.

:02:06. > :02:10.Missing for more than two decades, but after years of appeals, there

:02:11. > :02:14.could be new hope for the family of Ben Needham, from Sheffield. He

:02:15. > :02:20.disappeared on the Greek island of costs when he was just 21 months

:02:21. > :02:25.old. His mother always believed he may have been abducted by gypsies.

:02:26. > :02:30.Now, the search for him could have fresh momentum. This is the Roma

:02:31. > :02:35.camp in central Greece where a blonde girl known as Maria was

:02:36. > :02:38.discovered. Tests confirm she has no DNA link to the couple she was

:02:39. > :02:44.living with. The camp is near Larisa, and every that has been

:02:45. > :02:50.linked to Ben's disappearance. There have been sightings of blonde

:02:51. > :02:54.haired, blue`eyed children, but the police never wanted to go in there,

:02:55. > :02:59.so it has given us hope that the authorities will go in and

:03:00. > :03:06.investigate the sightings that we had over the years. Now, they are

:03:07. > :03:12.not scared to go in there, so this will open some doors, hopefully, and

:03:13. > :03:16.get something done. Roma experts say the community is often involved in

:03:17. > :03:24.illicit activity, but the case of Maria has shocked them. It is very

:03:25. > :03:29.unusual, but until now, we have seen scores of Roma families selling

:03:30. > :03:35.newborn children to Greek families that do not have children and cannot

:03:36. > :03:40.adopt because of the Greek law. Those Roma families came from dog

:03:41. > :03:46.area and Romain yet, most of them. This is the first case that we know

:03:47. > :03:53.where a child lives for years in a Roma family. A year ago, police

:03:54. > :03:55.officers searched the land. South Yorkshire police say no

:03:56. > :04:00.investigation is being carried out by them in light of this recent

:04:01. > :04:05.case. Ben's family remained certain he will be found. Ben's mother Kerry

:04:06. > :04:09.has always thought his abduction was gypsy`related.

:04:10. > :04:12.I spoke to her earlier this afternoon and asked Kerry Needham

:04:13. > :04:19.what she first thought when she'd seen the footage.

:04:20. > :04:27.Mixed emotions for myself and all of my family. Extremely happy that this

:04:28. > :04:32.girl has been saved from a life with gypsies and can be reunited with her

:04:33. > :04:38.parents, but a lot of frustration and anger, because we have been

:04:39. > :04:41.asking the Greek police to investigate the Gypsy theory, we

:04:42. > :04:46.have had lots of information that Ben has been missing that he was

:04:47. > :04:50.taken by gypsies and kept in the camp, and the police have insisted

:04:51. > :04:54.that gypsies do not steal children because they have enough of their

:04:55. > :04:58.own and it would be impossible to keep a blonde haired, blue`eyed

:04:59. > :05:05.child within these encampment. Now Maria has been found, it puts the

:05:06. > :05:10.theory to bed again, we want the investigation regarding the gypsies

:05:11. > :05:18.investigated again now. You now want your family's DNA to be tested as

:05:19. > :05:24.part of the investigation, why? It has been blown out of proportion by

:05:25. > :05:27.the Greek media, this part of it. I was asked if I thought that Maria

:05:28. > :05:34.bore any resemblance to myself or Ben. I said, apart from having

:05:35. > :05:39.blonde and blue eyes, I do not know, I find it unlikely, but it would not

:05:40. > :05:45.hurt to do a DNA test just in case she could be Ben's child. I have not

:05:46. > :05:52.insisted there be a DNA test, I just said it would not hurt, just to be

:05:53. > :05:59.on the safe side. These Roma camps, did they feature in 1991 as part of

:06:00. > :06:07.the police investigation? No, not in the particular area where Maria was

:06:08. > :06:13.found. It was in Larisa, the main town, and there are many other

:06:14. > :06:18.little towns within it. We have had alleged sightings and information in

:06:19. > :06:26.Larisa that then could have been in the Gypsy divinity there. Do you

:06:27. > :06:30.think he is still alive? Absolutely. I do believe he is out there, and it

:06:31. > :06:35.is just a matter of time now, with this massive press coverage we have

:06:36. > :06:38.had, I believe we could get a breakthrough and get some more

:06:39. > :06:44.information. South Yorkshire Police said they are not linking the two

:06:45. > :06:49.investigations, ID satisfied? That is fine, we are not saying there is

:06:50. > :06:54.a link or that the Gypsy people that had Maria took them as well. All we

:06:55. > :06:58.are doing is putting the pieces together, and we have had

:06:59. > :07:11.information about them being with gypsies in Larisa and the

:07:12. > :07:13.surrounding areas. Corrie `` we just want the Gypsy investigation opened

:07:14. > :07:20.up again and gone through more thoroughly.

:07:21. > :07:22.We keep our fingers crossed. Later on Look North.

:07:23. > :07:25.Put through their paces. We're given access to the South

:07:26. > :07:28.Yorkshire Police training centre as controversial fitness tests come

:07:29. > :07:31.into force. Tonight, a man remains in police

:07:32. > :07:35.custody on suspicion of the murder of a 32`year`old woman in York. A

:07:36. > :07:46.second woman, aged 23, is in hospital with stab wounds following

:07:47. > :07:50.the incident in the city last night. Still sealed off today, the murder

:07:51. > :07:57.scene in York, police have been called to an apartment just before

:07:58. > :08:02.8pm last night. A local woman was found dead at the scene. The younger

:08:03. > :08:05.victim of the alleged double attack remains in York district Hospital,

:08:06. > :08:10.where police are waiting to speak to her. Six and a half hours after

:08:11. > :08:17.police were first alerted, the man was arrested in a flat here in

:08:18. > :08:23.central York. He is being held on suspicion of murder and attempted

:08:24. > :08:29.murder. It is understood the man may have been known to at least one of

:08:30. > :08:34.the women. As police insisted it had been an isolated incident, their

:08:35. > :08:36.enquiries were including the examining of CCTV cameras outside

:08:37. > :08:43.the National Railway Museum around the corner from the scene of crime,

:08:44. > :08:48.a modern set of apartments, where residents say the few known the

:08:49. > :08:53.neighbours. It is a transient population, we do not know each

:08:54. > :08:59.other. It is a quiet shriek, you never hear anything going on. Such a

:09:00. > :09:05.lovely area, the flats look so lovely. Tonight, the survivor

:09:06. > :09:08.remains in a stable condition. Police say despite the arrest of the

:09:09. > :09:11.suspect, they still need more information from anyone who can help

:09:12. > :09:17.them build up the defence of what happened last night.

:09:18. > :09:20.Some other news from around Yorkshire now. The family of Keith

:09:21. > :09:24.West from Sheffield, who drowned saving a swimmer in trouble, have

:09:25. > :09:27.returned home from Cyprus. Keith was on the island with his fiancee

:09:28. > :09:32.Julie, finding a venue for their wedding next year. He's been

:09:33. > :09:36.described as a hero after managing to rescue the older man from the sea

:09:37. > :09:38.before being dragged back under by the current.

:09:39. > :09:41.Ten people have been arrested and six people have been charged after

:09:42. > :09:44.police officers were assaulted in Scarborough. They were kicked,

:09:45. > :09:47.head`butted and spat at while trying to break up disorder around the town

:09:48. > :09:50.early yesterday morning. Police say the incident raises questions about

:09:51. > :09:52.the levels of drinking in the resort at weekends.

:09:53. > :09:55.Leeds City Council's issued ten times as many fines for littering

:09:56. > :09:58.since it began a zero`tolerance approach in April. The council's

:09:59. > :10:04.employed enforcement officers from a private security firm to patrol the

:10:05. > :10:08.streets. More than 1,300 fines have been issued in a five`month period,

:10:09. > :10:14.compared to just 136 in the same period last year.

:10:15. > :10:17.Now, police officers across Yorkshire are being subjected to a

:10:18. > :10:21.controversial new fitness test. Some have failed the test, others have

:10:22. > :10:24.been injured. If officers repeatedly fail it, they face being sacked. So,

:10:25. > :10:40.how difficult is it? Our police officers are having to

:10:41. > :10:44.swap their black boots for the trainers. Running up and down in a

:10:45. > :10:48.gym in what the rent is different from jumping over fences, chasing

:10:49. > :10:53.criminals, but now every police officer has two prove they are fit

:10:54. > :10:57.enough to do their job. This test makes officers run faster the longer

:10:58. > :11:01.it goes on. They have got to time their vans to the bleeps, three and

:11:02. > :11:06.a half minutes of running in total. It is too tough for some, but others

:11:07. > :11:13.want to push themselves. When I finished, I was out of breath. It is

:11:14. > :11:17.a key part of the role. We are expected to catch criminals, and how

:11:18. > :11:23.are you going to catch them if you do not have a certain level of the

:11:24. > :11:28.this? Most officers are passing. In September, South Yorkshire posted

:11:29. > :11:34.380, and only eight withdrew, a failure rate of 2%. The organisation

:11:35. > :11:36.representing officers think the tests are a good idea, but they are

:11:37. > :11:45.concerned everybody needs to meet the same standard. It has got to be

:11:46. > :11:52.taken whether you are 18 or 55. Other countries discriminate and

:11:53. > :11:57.give extra time to perform the test according to gender and age. We do

:11:58. > :12:02.not agree with the method we are using at the moment, the title is

:12:03. > :12:08.job`related fitness test, I have yet to see any officer have to do a shot

:12:09. > :12:13.or one whilst out on the street in full kit, not many villains double

:12:14. > :12:17.back on themselves. It is not the most gruelling challenge, but South

:12:18. > :12:21.Yorkshire says people expect their officers to have a certain level of

:12:22. > :12:26.the days. Even the chief constable has done the test, twice. What about

:12:27. > :12:33.a lazy journalist? It starts pretty easily, just above walking pace. It

:12:34. > :12:43.is a bit tougher. You are soon running faster, but the test does

:12:44. > :12:47.not last long. That is it. It gets the heart going. I cannot imagine

:12:48. > :12:52.wearing a full body kit, doing that every day.

:12:53. > :12:56.Before 7pm. We'll have a round`up of the weekend's football action.

:12:57. > :12:58.The Yorkshire Awards honour the county's finest, including garden

:12:59. > :13:05.designer Chris Myers, who's now found countrywide fame.

:13:06. > :13:06.And, 26 miles of endurance for the 6,000 runners of the first ever

:13:07. > :13:18.Yorkshire Marathon. On to the sport now. Tanya's here,

:13:19. > :13:27.and Sheffield United seem no nearer to getting a new manager.

:13:28. > :13:30.It depends who you believe! Maybe, maybe not. Former Derby boss Nigel

:13:31. > :13:33.Clough remains favourite for the job, but is still sorting out

:13:34. > :13:36.compensation for himself and his staff with his former employers, and

:13:37. > :13:40.we understand will sit tight until that happens. But on the pitch, the

:13:41. > :13:44.Blades got their first win since the opening day of the season, lifting

:13:45. > :13:51.them out of the League One relegation places.

:13:52. > :13:58.The ball bounced Sheffield United's way for once when this header went

:13:59. > :14:03.in off the post. Then, Port Vale's player was sent off, and it should

:14:04. > :14:08.have been easy from then on. It was not, Port Vale got an equaliser

:14:09. > :14:11.before half`time. Sheffield United only got back in front with a

:14:12. > :14:17.quarter of an hour left. A very worthy winner. They are working hard

:14:18. > :14:21.to get a manager in, and we just have to make it an easier

:14:22. > :14:28.transition. For him to come in on the back of a couple of good results

:14:29. > :14:32.is better. This is quality, Barnsley's player taking on six

:14:33. > :14:37.defenders before scoring as good an individual goal as you will see all

:14:38. > :14:43.season. The second one was less sophisticated but just as important,

:14:44. > :14:50.a deflection. Barnsley hung on to beat Middlesbrough 3`2. They move

:14:51. > :14:54.off the bottom of the league and go above Sheffield Wednesday. They were

:14:55. > :14:58.helped out by a candidate for own goal of the season. Baptiste gave

:14:59. > :15:05.the goal keeper no chance, a clinical finish! The teams were on

:15:06. > :15:10.level after the red card. The referee did not pause for thought

:15:11. > :15:13.before reaching for red. The match finished 1`1, Sheffield Wednesday

:15:14. > :15:18.still without a league victory. Leeds United got back on track

:15:19. > :15:27.yesterday. The Birmingham keeper went walkabout, and then two more

:15:28. > :15:31.before half`time. Smith got his second after the break to make it

:15:32. > :15:36.4`0, Leeds United climb to ninth place.

:15:37. > :15:39.Huddersfield's Tom Sykes has become the World Superbike champion. His

:15:40. > :15:43.third place in the first race in Jerez was enough to see him over the

:15:44. > :15:47.line. It was an emotional victory for the 28`year`old after he missed

:15:48. > :15:50.out on last year's title by half a point. He becomes just the fourth

:15:51. > :15:52.British winner of the title, a list that of course includes Sheffield's

:15:53. > :15:55.James Toseland. The England rugby league coach Steve

:15:56. > :15:58.McNamara says his side underperformed and maybe took Italy

:15:59. > :16:03.for granted after their shock defeat at the weekend. He was speaking at

:16:04. > :16:07.the launch of the World Cup, which kicks off in Cardiff at the weekend,

:16:08. > :16:11.with England facing the far greater challenge of Australia. Losing to

:16:12. > :16:17.one of the rank outsiders in their final warm`up match wasn't ideal

:16:18. > :16:22.preparation. We were not good in that game, we

:16:23. > :16:31.are aware of that, the conditions were extremely tough. The main focus

:16:32. > :16:36.was we did not prepare right. We did get it right at the end, and the

:16:37. > :16:40.players did not perform as well as we would have expected.

:16:41. > :16:43.It was a good weekend for the Sheffield Steelers, who picked up

:16:44. > :16:46.two wins, including victory over top`of`the`table Belfast. They had

:16:47. > :16:49.to come from behind, but goals from Stefan Meyer and Jonathan Phillips

:16:50. > :16:52.secured the 2`1 win over the Giants. Frank Doyle was man of the match,

:16:53. > :16:56.making two second`period penalty`shot saves. The Steelers are

:16:57. > :17:04.up to third in the league, but have games in hand over Belfast and

:17:05. > :17:08.Dundee above them. The goalkeeper was something else!

:17:09. > :17:11.I have always thought they were absolutely bonkers!

:17:12. > :17:14.On Friday night, the great and the good of Yorkshire came together to

:17:15. > :17:17.celebrate some of the people that make our county what it is. The

:17:18. > :17:23.Yorkshire Awards, now in their 25th year, were hosted by myself and

:17:24. > :17:26.Harry in Leeds. Among the winners was triple amputee Craig Wood, a

:17:27. > :17:34.soldier from Doncaster, and former Corrie actress Katherine Kelly.

:17:35. > :17:48.The champagne was flowing on Friday night and for a very good reason.

:17:49. > :17:51.The 25th annual Yorkshire of warts were held in Leeds, celebrating

:17:52. > :17:57.people from our region who have done great thing for their home county.

:17:58. > :18:01.To the local people realise how lucky they are? The community heroes

:18:02. > :18:07.of the first of the first award to be announced, going to Mike Collins,

:18:08. > :18:12.who spent 25 years volunteering. Including rescuing people from last

:18:13. > :18:21.year's floods. Actor and comedian Billy Pierce received the arts and

:18:22. > :18:26.entertainment award. And Sue Smith added the Yorkshire sport award to

:18:27. > :18:31.her list of achievements. It is all systems go, everybody works hard. We

:18:32. > :18:36.are all very keen to win. The business and enterprise award went

:18:37. > :18:41.to Morrisons. The lifetime achievement award was given to Linda

:18:42. > :18:48.pollard, chairman of Leeds Teaching Hospitals and the former pro`Vice

:18:49. > :18:54.Chancellor of Leeds University. I will say to anybody who works with

:18:55. > :18:59.me, do not say you will do anything if you are in doubt, you have to

:19:00. > :19:04.deliver, and your reputation is built on delivery. A statement true

:19:05. > :19:07.of our next winner, former Coronation Street actress Katherine

:19:08. > :19:16.Kelly. Comedy starring in the period drama Mr Selfridge. 2013's Yorkshire

:19:17. > :19:21.woman of the year. I feel like I am so lucky to do something that I love

:19:22. > :19:25.so much. Yorkshire man of the year also looks rather familiar. Harry

:19:26. > :19:35.Gration, massive congratulations, we love you. Chris Myers took home the

:19:36. > :19:40.Countryside Award. But it was the special award which received a

:19:41. > :19:46.standing ovation. Going to soldier and triple amputee Craig Wood, from

:19:47. > :19:51.Doncaster. The close network of Yorkshire, you are all clapping,

:19:52. > :19:55.thank you very much. Well, another of the award winners

:19:56. > :20:02.is with us now. Chris Myers won the Countryside Award. They do not come

:20:03. > :20:09.much more Yorkshire than you. Do you reckon! In the peace that we

:20:10. > :20:14.watched, you said, no way! You were talking about meadows. I got a phone

:20:15. > :20:25.call from the Yorkshire Dales trust, 90% of our Yorkshire Dales, the wild

:20:26. > :20:31.flowers, have gone. I need to help! The trophy is a beautiful ball, how

:20:32. > :20:35.did you feel? It seems bonkers. When I am out in the countryside, I see

:20:36. > :20:40.so many people that love the place, just like I do. I have got an award

:20:41. > :20:44.for living the Yorkshire countryside! I am lucky, through the

:20:45. > :20:49.show gardens I produce and through the TV show that I did, I have had

:20:50. > :20:57.the opportunity to shout about how gorgeous Yorkshire is. We can see

:20:58. > :21:02.some of your programme. Mother nature was like an extra member of

:21:03. > :21:06.the family, was she? Yes, we went up onto the moors and picked Bill Bruce

:21:07. > :21:14.in the summer holidays, something to do with the kids, and then have jam

:21:15. > :21:17.making and pie making sessions. Nobody has planted the berries, they

:21:18. > :21:23.are just growing, doing their own thing. You get back home, we had a

:21:24. > :21:27.little plot in the garden and we would have competitions, Roman

:21:28. > :21:35.strawberries and vegetables. We have always been into it. You had the

:21:36. > :21:40.chance to trade elsewhere, but you always stayed true to Yorkshire, and

:21:41. > :21:44.you like coming back? It is where I was born, I have spent all my life,

:21:45. > :21:53.especially out in the countryside, so it is in death. Whenever I go to

:21:54. > :21:56.a big city, I am like, I need to go home! You have created high profile

:21:57. > :22:01.gardens, including full Boris Johnson. You managed to sneak a lot

:22:02. > :22:08.of Yorkshire in. What was his reaction? He thought it was a bit

:22:09. > :22:11.messy! There were three of us, and mine were supposed to be a natural

:22:12. > :22:18.environment with things that you could eat and grow. He was a bit

:22:19. > :22:21.like, this is just a lot of wheat! A lot of people react like that, but

:22:22. > :22:28.some people will say, that reminds me of home! You know they are from

:22:29. > :22:33.Yorkshire! They love to see something that reminds them of home.

:22:34. > :22:34.We are really proud of you, congratulations, you really deserve

:22:35. > :22:38.it. And if you want to see a full list

:22:45. > :22:46.Now, we've had marathons in Yorkshire's major cities for many

:22:47. > :22:50.years, but never one called the Yorkshire Marathon. Well, all that

:22:51. > :22:54.changed in York yesterday, and more than 6,000 people took part. The

:22:55. > :22:57.event was in memory of Jane Tomlinson, who raised nearly ?2

:22:58. > :23:00.million for charity while she was suffering from cancer. Yesterday's

:23:01. > :23:08.race looks set to do the same. Here's a look back at the day.

:23:09. > :23:41.it is amazing, the feedback has been phenomenal, everything we could have

:23:42. > :24:21.hoped for, and a million times more. Normally, we do events, and it is

:24:22. > :24:27.thousands, but this time, it will be over a million, and probably 2

:24:28. > :24:37.million. Come on, Harry! Are you all right? Yes, I do? No! Well done,

:24:38. > :24:43.Harry! First Yorkshire Marathon, first time in York, four Mike and

:24:44. > :24:46.Jane, I am glad I have done it. I wanted to put an event on that

:24:47. > :24:48.Yorkshire could be proud of, and people could sit back and think, I

:24:49. > :25:03.want to do that one day. I went down to York Minster and I

:25:04. > :25:08.watched them, and Harry was like a racing snake! It gave me goose

:25:09. > :25:12.bumps, watching that. Next year, signing up?

:25:13. > :25:23.Maybe just a bit of it! Probably not! I have got a couple of pictures

:25:24. > :25:30.to start us off. The first one is sent from York. This is what it

:25:31. > :25:36.looked like today, very bleak, lots of rain, but it brightened up. This

:25:37. > :25:40.was after a shower yesterday. We had some sharp showers. You can keep

:25:41. > :25:53.your pictures coming in. You can also tweak me. As we go

:25:54. > :25:59.through into the next couple of days, it will stay mild, it will be

:26:00. > :26:05.windy and unsettled. The air is holding a lot of moisture. A lot of

:26:06. > :26:09.rain came up from the south`west, fairly heavy and persistent bursts,

:26:10. > :26:16.or that brightened up quite nicely for some of us. One or two showers

:26:17. > :26:20.in places. Overnight, we are looking out for this band of rain. Some

:26:21. > :26:27.heavy spells of rain into the early hours of tomorrow morning. It will

:26:28. > :26:37.be a mild night. We hold onto the breeze from the south. Tomorrow

:26:38. > :26:42.morning, we hold onto the southerly air. There will be rain around at

:26:43. > :26:49.times, especially through the morning. The wind will be

:26:50. > :27:00.strengthening, but like today, it brightens up for some of us.

:27:01. > :27:06.We are going to hold onto the mild air as we go through into the next

:27:07. > :27:11.couple of days. As we go into Wednesday, blustery showers

:27:12. > :27:16.overnight. It will hopefully turn try for a time on Thursday.
