:00:00. > :00:11.Welcome to Wednesday's Look North as Yorkshire celebrates the Tour De
:00:12. > :00:14.France. I'm in Cragg Vale in Calderdale, which has been
:00:15. > :00:19.officially named on the route for next year's Grand Depart. Thousands
:00:20. > :00:29.of journalists were at the launch event in Paris with Yorkshire's
:00:30. > :00:32.finest scenery on display. Paul Ogden is live in the French Capital,
:00:33. > :00:44.we'll also hear from the sport's biggest names as Yorkshire tells the
:00:45. > :00:48.world it's ready. Nous sommes prets. We'll also show you just how
:00:49. > :00:50.close the Tour will be coming to your town.
:00:51. > :00:53.Also tonight, four people charged in Greece in connection with the death
:00:54. > :00:56.of a South Yorkshire teenager on the island of Zante.
:00:57. > :01:00.More than 1,200 jobs to go at Doncaster Council ` which may also
:01:01. > :01:01.sell off all its elderly day care centres.
:01:02. > :01:09.A heavyweight sporting appointment ` Sheffield United name Brian Clough's
:01:10. > :01:15.son Nigel as their new manager. And the sunshine was out today.
:01:16. > :01:31.There will be more sunshine for all of us tomorrow. I will be back with
:01:32. > :01:43.the full forecast later. Good evening from the Robin Hood Lane in
:01:44. > :01:47.crowd `` in Cragg Vale. People are excited because it has been
:01:48. > :01:52.confirmed that this will be part of the Grand Depart. They are quite
:01:53. > :01:59.excited. Outside this pub is an incline, the longest in England.
:02:00. > :02:04.More than 1000 metres high and over five miles. We will hear more about
:02:05. > :02:11.that later in the programme. We'll also be show you exactly where the
:02:12. > :02:15.street `` where the route goes. The first of all, Paul Ogden has been at
:02:16. > :02:21.the launch event in Paris. We now cross to him live. An exciting day
:02:22. > :02:26.for Yorkshire? An exciting day for all of us,
:02:27. > :02:31.Nikki. Today is the closest we have ever come to having our own French
:02:32. > :02:36.version of Yorkshire Day here in the French capital. What happened over
:02:37. > :02:43.the road is something that happens every year. A preview of the next
:02:44. > :02:47.year's official Tour De France route. But never before and perhaps
:02:48. > :02:52.never again will there have been so much Yorkshire influence on what we
:02:53. > :02:58.have seen today. We have known since January this year that the world's
:02:59. > :03:02.biggest annual sporting event, seen on TV in 188 different countries,
:03:03. > :03:09.will be starting in Yorkshire in July 2014. But today in Paris has
:03:10. > :03:13.been a chance for the Tour De France owners to show the world what
:03:14. > :03:18.Yorkshire is made of. What is clear is that some of the tour's most
:03:19. > :03:25.recognisable recent champions need no introduction. The Tour De France
:03:26. > :03:29.is coming to the UK. Starting in Yorkshire, my mother's home county
:03:30. > :03:37.and finishes in Harrogate where my family live. I spent time there as a
:03:38. > :03:43.child. It is a big, big thing. I am really excited. The only thing I can
:03:44. > :03:48.relate it to, is that it will be similar to the feeling that we had
:03:49. > :03:54.at the Olympics last year. But is Yorkshire going to be hard enough in
:03:55. > :04:00.terms of the hills? If you look up around Sheffield, it will be really
:04:01. > :04:08.tough. I think the real difficulties will happen in the Alps and the
:04:09. > :04:13.Pyrenees. But the roads around Sheffield will definitely saw the
:04:14. > :04:18.guys out. And our British champion is not the only ones who have been
:04:19. > :04:22.doing homework for the official presentation of the official 2014
:04:23. > :04:28.Tour De France route. But if there's one for a Yorkshire lad to impress
:04:29. > :04:56.the French, it is to meet, speak, and greet as they do. HE SPEAKS
:04:57. > :05:00.FRENCH. He speaks very well. It is hard for him because of his heart
:05:01. > :05:07.problem a while ago. It is very good for the tour. It will be an
:05:08. > :05:12.unforgettable Grand Depart. It was not all dignitaries and elite
:05:13. > :05:19.cyclists today. What a school trip that has been for this community
:05:20. > :05:25.school in Leeds. It has been an honour. Representing Yorkshire is
:05:26. > :05:29.amazing. Sebi cyclist in front of me, especially Mark Cavendish and
:05:30. > :05:37.Chris Froome, I was selling heart attack! For me, Yorkshire, in terms
:05:38. > :05:43.of cycling, it is a place where people have a passion for it. It is
:05:44. > :05:55.impressive and I'm sure 100% that it will be huge. Next July in
:05:56. > :06:00.Yorkshire. Christian Prudhomme talked about all sorts of things in
:06:01. > :06:07.his speech, including Eric Cantona and Leeds United, but he also spoke
:06:08. > :06:12.about Yorkshire's intrinsic cycling culture all of which persuaded them
:06:13. > :06:15.to bring their precious race to Yorkshire next year. Without this
:06:16. > :06:19.gentleman next to me, none of this would have happened. Christian
:06:20. > :06:25.Prudhomme said something worrying, user that you had been poorly, with
:06:26. > :06:31.heart problem? `` he said that you had been poorly. Should we be
:06:32. > :06:35.worried? No, two weeks ago I had an operation on my heart, but I'm fit
:06:36. > :06:43.now and I am operating on full power. I have been on half power. I
:06:44. > :06:47.am in good form, thank you for asking. Really up for the challenge.
:06:48. > :06:57.How much of a personal sacrifice has it been. It is no hardship for me.
:06:58. > :07:00.If you are a proud Yorkshireman and you want the county to do well and
:07:01. > :07:05.you genuinely believe in it doing well, you will do the best that you
:07:06. > :07:10.can do every day. That is what myself and the team have done. We
:07:11. > :07:15.are desperate for Yorkshire to do really well. Getting the Tour De
:07:16. > :07:19.France to Yorkshire was a huge issue before us and the county. It is
:07:20. > :07:23.starting to sink in. You have seen a grim survey today, thousands of
:07:24. > :07:34.journalists, TV crews, covering it globally. Tomorrow, the newsprint,
:07:35. > :07:39.the websites, TV news, majoring on Yorkshire. Will this be the end of
:07:40. > :07:44.your attempts to bring full`time international racing to Yorkshire?
:07:45. > :07:48.No, I don't think so. We are ambitious, we want more cycling in
:07:49. > :07:56.Yorkshire. We want big European sporting events. I am almost out of
:07:57. > :08:05.breath listening to Gary Verity. We need to watch this space! He is fit,
:08:06. > :08:13.and he is not done yet. It's not just Paris getting in the
:08:14. > :08:17.mood for next summer's tour. Welcome back to the Robin Hood Inn in Cragg
:08:18. > :08:22.Vale and ordered out dashing Calderdale. The community have been
:08:23. > :08:26.getting ready and preparing. Even though we are talking about July
:08:27. > :08:30.next year, they have decorated the wall behind me up with the greater
:08:31. > :08:35.good of every Tour De France for 100 years. All over Yorkshire, things
:08:36. > :08:38.have been happening. In Middleham in North Yorkshire, the first permanent
:08:39. > :08:42.sign marking the route was installed today. Around 50 waymarks will be
:08:43. > :08:48.put up along stage one so cyclists and motorists can follow the route
:08:49. > :08:54.for years to come. Now it is your chance to see just how close the
:08:55. > :09:07.world's elite cyclists will come to your towns, villages, cities. Let's
:09:08. > :09:15.take a look at the route for 2014. Stage one is 118 miles from Leeds to
:09:16. > :09:20.Harry Gate to the Yorkshire Dales. They will go to Harwood house and
:09:21. > :09:26.through the estate. Then they will go to Otley and then along the road
:09:27. > :09:36.to Skipton. Through the wharf Valley and then the climbing begins.
:09:37. > :09:40.Swaledale provides a fantastic backdrop before the climate to
:09:41. > :09:44.Leyburn. The sprinters can then regroup as the tour travels to Ripon
:09:45. > :09:58.on the way to Harrowgate. Experts think it will be eight finish for
:09:59. > :10:03.the sprinters. Stage two is 124 miles from York to Sheffield with
:10:04. > :10:07.plenty of tales. Starting in York, the riders had to Knaresborough
:10:08. > :10:12.before returning to Harrowgate. Then it is over the tops as the tour
:10:13. > :10:17.makes its second visit to adding. Keighley is the next stop and then
:10:18. > :10:21.into Bronte country, over the moors to Hebden Bridge. Then Cragg Vale
:10:22. > :10:37.for that five and a half mile climb. Any reef visited Lancaster.
:10:38. > :10:44.Then hold first then a steep climb. `` then hold first. It finishes in
:10:45. > :10:50.spectacular style in Sheffield near the arena.
:10:51. > :10:53.And if you want to find out if the tour is coming to your street `
:10:54. > :11:07.there's full turn`by`turn detail available online. Go to your local
:11:08. > :11:12.BBC website. The Tour De France has put Cragg Vale on the map. There is
:11:13. > :11:18.a five and a half mile incline. It is a mecca for cyclists. I will talk
:11:19. > :11:23.to some of them now. Chris, you are a bit sweaty, what have you been
:11:24. > :11:27.doing! I have ridden the year from Lancashire tonight. Along the
:11:28. > :11:34.Valley. How excited are you about next year's Tour De France? Very
:11:35. > :11:42.excited. Jonathan, you have done the incline, you talked up your name the
:11:43. > :11:45.board. The fastest on the board! It is a beautiful incline. It goes
:11:46. > :11:50.through the trees and then comes out onto the trees and then comes out on
:11:51. > :11:54.to them all and is exposed. `` and it is exposed. We try to do it as
:11:55. > :12:00.much as we can. How excited are you about next year? I watched the Tour
:12:01. > :12:08.De France for 30 years and the idea that it is coming passed our front
:12:09. > :12:12.door, I'm pinching myself! We will have more from the people of Cragg
:12:13. > :12:18.Vale later on. They have been preparing like mad and taking part
:12:19. > :12:22.in a world record attempt. For cyclist who like to put
:12:23. > :12:27.themselves to the test, it seems Cragg Vale in the Calder Valley is
:12:28. > :12:30.an attraction. It is a classic challenge for cyclists. A lot of
:12:31. > :12:36.cyclists around Yorkshire come here to ride the climb. It is about five
:12:37. > :12:40.miles, about 1000 foot climb. The best ones can do it in about 16
:12:41. > :12:46.minutes but however long you take, it doesn't matter. It is part of the
:12:47. > :12:53.root of the Tour De France. It is called imagination. The number of
:12:54. > :12:54.cyclists who are using this road now, it is incredible. Every
:12:55. > :13:21.weekend, there are hundreds. Meanwhile, in doors, the children at
:13:22. > :13:27.the Ark nursery are helping with the world record attempt. They have been
:13:28. > :13:32.helping members of the community Association Grady bunting that will
:13:33. > :13:36.line the Cragg Vale climb route. But it has not been without the odd
:13:37. > :13:41.hitch. We did a trial hanging a couple of weeks ago will be put up
:13:42. > :13:46.250 metres just to see what happened. Unfortunately, it lasted a
:13:47. > :13:50.day and a half and someone stole it. Every colour of the rainbow in the
:13:51. > :13:56.bunting, but great is your favourite? Yes, because a few months
:13:57. > :14:00.ago, my husband had an accident and he had cut off his trousers and I
:14:01. > :14:05.grabbed them and wash them and use them in my bunting! A pair of faded
:14:06. > :14:12.grey trousers which I also grabbed and used. And I had the idea of 50
:14:13. > :14:15.shades of grey. And there it is! I notice you are wearing grey
:14:16. > :14:22.trousers, sir would you like to donate your trousers to the cause?
:14:23. > :14:27.Outside, our cyclists have reached the end of the climb. Their reward,
:14:28. > :14:32.a freewheel downhill to the local pub to talk of their times dashed to
:14:33. > :14:39.chalk up their times on a special board. `` to chalk up their times on
:14:40. > :14:43.a special board. Later, we will be speaking to the
:14:44. > :14:51.oldest and the youngest to complete that climb. Now, more on this
:14:52. > :14:56.bunting story. Elaine and Marianne, you have had a key role in this as
:14:57. > :15:03.part of the community Association. What brought it on? It was a spur of
:15:04. > :15:07.the moment thing. We think that where we live is beautiful and we
:15:08. > :15:11.wanted to do something to celebrate it. Elaine has taken it on, the
:15:12. > :15:17.association is helping, but Elaine is doing it. Elaine, you are known
:15:18. > :15:21.as the slowest cyclist in Calderdale! It took you a week to
:15:22. > :15:31.get to the top? I have not actually made it yet. How long do you think
:15:32. > :15:35.this bunting needs to be? The world record is several miles, but we
:15:36. > :15:42.would like to beat that and make it enough to cover the whole of the
:15:43. > :15:46.route, 5.5 miles. Can they do it? Of course they can! We will be back
:15:47. > :15:51.later in the programme. Now I will hand you back for the rest of the
:15:52. > :15:55.day's news. Four people are facing charges in
:15:56. > :15:58.Greece after the death of a Derbyshire teenager. Matthew Cryer
:15:59. > :16:01.died on the island of Zante in 2008. The police in Greece originally said
:16:02. > :16:05.he'd died through excessive drinking but an inquest in the UK heard
:16:06. > :16:08.evidence that he'd been attacked by club bouncers. After a long campaign
:16:09. > :16:18.by the family, they're hopeful there could now be a trial. Tom Ingall has
:16:19. > :16:23.been to meet them today. It's a regular pilgrimage to Matthew
:16:24. > :16:27.Cryer's grave for his family. His parents have separated but now the
:16:28. > :16:33.whole family are involved in the campaign for justice. The Sheffield
:16:34. > :16:39.Wednesday fan should have been 22. But at 17, on his first foreign
:16:40. > :16:43.holiday alone, he died. At first, the Greek authorities said that it
:16:44. > :16:48.was related to alcohol. But at a UK inquest, a verdict of unlawful
:16:49. > :16:52.killing was recorded. Witnesses said that bounces attacked him and he
:16:53. > :17:02.fell down a flight of stairs. We were hoping for a manslaughter
:17:03. > :17:05.charge, not a murder charge. It is neither murder nor manslaughter,
:17:06. > :17:13.they have been charged for exposure, which is similar to our involuntary
:17:14. > :17:17.manslaughter. It is disgraceful the length of time it has taken, we have
:17:18. > :17:23.had no help from the Foreign Office. But we have a lawyer now and it
:17:24. > :17:28.seems to be moving quicker. Matthew's parents and their friends
:17:29. > :17:32.believe that it is a campaign of direct action which has helped them
:17:33. > :17:36.secure this breakthrough. It has brought it to people's Ascension and
:17:37. > :17:45.push it further, especially with the powers that be. It is hoped to `` it
:17:46. > :17:49.has helped to drive it forward. We will never get closure, but what we
:17:50. > :17:56.are hoping to get is if we can get to the end of the judicial process,
:17:57. > :18:01.and get a fair verdict for Matthew, we can move forward with our lives.
:18:02. > :18:05.There is one further review to take place but five years after
:18:06. > :18:09.Matthew's death, his family are close to their day in court.
:18:10. > :18:12.More than 1,200 jobs are to go at Doncaster Council in the next three
:18:13. > :18:15.years. All elderly day care centres may be closed and services handed
:18:16. > :18:19.over to private companies. Libraries and leisure centres are also under
:18:20. > :18:24.threat as the council needs to save over ?100 million by 2017.
:18:25. > :18:28.1200 jobs have been lost at Doncaster Council in the last three
:18:29. > :18:36.years and ?100 million of extra cups means that another 1200 will be
:18:37. > :18:40.walking out of Doncaster's offices by 2017. They are looking at closing
:18:41. > :18:44.residential centres for elderly people, the totally libraries and
:18:45. > :18:48.leisure centres as well. The council says it has no choice. But the
:18:49. > :18:55.unions representing workers say that beat cuts are on fair and
:18:56. > :19:01.short`sighted. Doncaster will have 50% less spending power in 2017 then
:19:02. > :19:06.in 2010. That is a massive void and it needs to be filled. You will see
:19:07. > :19:13.local government far different in 2017 than now. This is the greatest
:19:14. > :19:18.challenge that I have ever seen. We have got questions over where they
:19:19. > :19:20.spend money in the past. Is it sensible to spend hundreds of
:19:21. > :19:26.thousands of pounds on consultants and agencies of always money better
:19:27. > :19:33.spent elsewhere? The decisions that have been made in the last three
:19:34. > :19:36.years, where we have already had an introduction in terms of the
:19:37. > :19:40.difficult situation financially, did they make the decisions early enough
:19:41. > :19:45.and in the right areas? I don't invade it. Councils in South
:19:46. > :19:49.Yorkshire are planning for the next four years. They are saying that
:19:50. > :19:52.they have to redesign what a council is and what they provide for and
:19:53. > :19:56.whether it will be value for money for taxpayers.
:19:57. > :19:59.A man has appeared before magistrates in York accused of the
:20:00. > :20:02.murder of an estate agent and the attempted murder of her colleague.
:20:03. > :20:05.Police had been called to an apartment in Phoenix Boulevard where
:20:06. > :20:08.they found 32`year`old Nicole Waterhouse dead. They're still
:20:09. > :20:11.waiting to speak to Karen Browne who's in hospital with serious
:20:12. > :20:15.injuries. 25`year`old Jeremy Green was arrested later at his flat in
:20:16. > :20:20.the city centre. He's been remanded in custody to appear at Leeds Crown
:20:21. > :20:23.Court next month. More than 100 protesters gathered
:20:24. > :20:26.outside Ferrybridge power station in West Yorkshire this morning. They
:20:27. > :20:29.claim a new multi`fuel power project at the site will employ large
:20:30. > :20:33.numbers of foreign workers, rather than local people. The contractors
:20:34. > :20:38.Hitachi Zosen Inova say they are committed to using local labour
:20:39. > :20:51.where possible. But members of the GMB and Unison unions disagree.
:20:52. > :20:59.The christening gift offered by David Cameron to Prince George is a
:21:00. > :21:04.box made in Leeds. It was made by him toys UK Ltd. It features a teddy
:21:05. > :21:07.and a soldier. It is a family business based in Shadwell. It is
:21:08. > :21:09.named after the owner's ten`year`old daughter.
:21:10. > :21:12.Sheffield United have appointed former Derby County boss Nigel
:21:13. > :21:15.Clough on a two`and`a`half`year deal. He's the son of Brian Clough,
:21:16. > :21:22.one of the most successful and colourful managers in the history of
:21:23. > :21:26.English football. Sheffield United have finally got
:21:27. > :21:31.their man. Nigel Clough has tied up the loose ends and formal club Derby
:21:32. > :21:37.and is now officially the Blades' new boss. Every time you come here,
:21:38. > :21:41.there are players and managers who come across as a proper football
:21:42. > :21:47.club. There is an awful lot of potential here. Nigel Clough played
:21:48. > :21:53.at the highest level of English football, notably with Liverpool. As
:21:54. > :21:58.a manager, he has been in charge of just two teams in 15 years.
:21:59. > :22:04.Remarkable longevity in the modern game. But it is as a manager's son
:22:05. > :22:08.that he is perhaps best known. Dad Brian Clough was one of the game's
:22:09. > :22:15.most successful and controversial characters. He was manager of Leeds
:22:16. > :22:19.United 444 days in 1974. Nigel Clough will become a Sheffield
:22:20. > :22:25.United's fourth manager in nine and a half years. That is how long it
:22:26. > :22:31.has been since the Blades were relegated. It is time for some
:22:32. > :22:35.stability and we have time to build something. Get some young players
:22:36. > :22:39.through from the academy if they're wrong ones that are good enough
:22:40. > :22:47.there. Attract some players as well. `` if there are ones that are
:22:48. > :22:59.good enough. Shepherd United drew nil to nail last night. He has some
:23:00. > :23:01.job to get the team into the top division. But you would be wise not
:23:02. > :23:04.to underestimate him. Sheffield United weren't our only
:23:05. > :23:08.team in action last night. Elsewhere in League One, Rotherham United
:23:09. > :23:11.could only manage a 1`1 draw at home to Tranmere, Kieran Agard with the
:23:12. > :23:14.goal for the Millers. Meanwhile Rory McArdle's late header rescued a
:23:15. > :23:19.point for Bradford at play`off rivals Preston. And in League Two,
:23:20. > :23:28.York City took a 2`0 lead at Chesterfield but the Spirites came
:23:29. > :23:34.back to salvage a draw. It has been a mile day but I sense
:23:35. > :23:45.things up going to get colder? Yes, a chilly night that sets us up
