:00:00. > :00:10.Welcome to Monday's Look North. On the programme tonight. Drugs, the

:00:11. > :00:13.Co`op Bank and a former Bradford councillor. Methodist Minister Paul

:00:14. > :00:18.Flowers facing claims he bought and used illegal drugs is suspended from

:00:19. > :00:20.the Labour Party. We'll also hear from a friend who says she stands by

:00:21. > :00:25.him. Also tonight. Has Yorkshire's jobs

:00:26. > :00:28.market turned a corner? 200 new jobs in York and thousands more promised,

:00:29. > :00:31.but the latest figures show unemployment still on the rise And

:00:32. > :00:34.we talk to one of Sheffield's coolest musical exports, the Arctic

:00:35. > :00:41.Monkeys, ahead of tonight's hometown gig.

:00:42. > :00:45.And in sport, he's already a champion, but he needs cash to keep

:00:46. > :00:53.him racing. We go track`side with Doncaster teenager Alex Gill.

:00:54. > :01:04.A cold night to come with a widespread frost. The very latest

:01:05. > :01:06.coming up shortly. But first tonight to the

:01:07. > :01:09.investigation into former Bradford Labour councillor and Methodist

:01:10. > :01:15.Minister Paul Flowers, over claims he bought and used illegal drugs.

:01:16. > :01:18.There are now calls for a probe into his appointment as chairman of the

:01:19. > :01:21.Co`op Bank. A national newspaper posted a video online apparently

:01:22. > :01:26.showing Mr Flowers handing over ?300 to buy drugs. This afternoon he was

:01:27. > :01:29.suspended by the Labour party. Our crime correspondent John Cundy

:01:30. > :01:34.reports. Next tonight, has Yorkshire's jobs market turned a

:01:35. > :01:39.corner? Not at home in Bradford today as

:01:40. > :01:43.look North sought the whereabouts of Paul Flowers. He is believed to be

:01:44. > :01:50.staying with friends somewhere outside Yorkshire. Keeping a low

:01:51. > :01:56.profile after revelations in newspapers of his alleged buying of

:01:57. > :01:59.drugs in the. That just days after Mr Flowers was questioned by the

:02:00. > :02:05.Treasury select committee over his three`year chairmanship of the

:02:06. > :02:18.co`operative bank. He left in May with Anna 1.5 pounds found `` gap in

:02:19. > :02:22.its finances. In 2001 he became a Labour councillor in Bradford. In

:02:23. > :02:26.2010 he became chair of the co`operative bank. He stood down the

:02:27. > :02:31.following year as a counsellor. In June of this year he resigned from

:02:32. > :02:34.the co`operative. There have in question as to whether he should

:02:35. > :02:41.ever have been a councillor and chair of the Co`op bank at the same

:02:42. > :02:49.time. You would have had to get permission to serve and to take on

:02:50. > :02:52.the role within the Co`op bank. I think the people who granted him

:02:53. > :02:57.permission gave him bad advice. This afternoon Paul Flowers was suspended

:02:58. > :03:02.from the Labour Party. He was involved in the cup bank and that is

:03:03. > :03:06.no longer the case. The police are looking at the issue. But Paul

:03:07. > :03:13.Flowers has received some support in Bradford. He is very much loved and

:03:14. > :03:21.add times as a counsellor we could have not got through situations

:03:22. > :03:26.without him. In Leeds any investigations are at a very early

:03:27. > :03:30.stage. I understand there will be no definite developments for several

:03:31. > :03:36.days. Tonight Paul Flowers remains suspended by his church as well as

:03:37. > :03:44.by the Labour Party. Next, has the jobs market in

:03:45. > :03:48.Yorkshire turned a corner? In York, 200 posts have been advertised at

:03:49. > :03:51.the new John Lewis store today. Meanwhile, ?10 million is to be

:03:52. > :03:54.spent on derelict land behind York Railway station, in a development

:03:55. > :03:57.which the council says will create thousands of jobs. But it follows a

:03:58. > :04:03.rise in unemployment in the region last month. Here's Dave Edwards.

:04:04. > :04:06.On the outskirts of York, construction is well under way. In

:04:07. > :04:11.the spring one of the biggest names in British retail John Lewis, will

:04:12. > :04:17.move in. 100 posts have already been filled and 200 more were advertised

:04:18. > :04:23.this morning. The interest in the job when we advertised the 100 rolls

:04:24. > :04:28.was fantastic. We had 500 people from the local area wanting to join

:04:29. > :04:34.John Lewis and we hope we will have a similar number four the job

:04:35. > :04:39.advertised today. Meanwhile in the centre of York major announcement.

:04:40. > :04:45.This land has been derelict for years. Part of it used to be the

:04:46. > :04:49.famous carriage works. A major employer back in its day. Plans to

:04:50. > :04:57.develop ear and build thousands of homes and offices have been put on

:04:58. > :05:02.hold at the height of the recession. But today the council said it would

:05:03. > :05:10.spend ?10 million on a new bridge over the railway lines for easier

:05:11. > :05:15.access to the site. That is expected to create thousands of jobs. We're

:05:16. > :05:24.putting in ?10 million towards this bridge to get access to the site. So

:05:25. > :05:28.building can now start. And those jobs will be much needed here in

:05:29. > :05:35.Yorkshire where last week's official figures showed unemployment rose by

:05:36. > :05:39.4000. There are now 248 thousand people in the region without a job.

:05:40. > :05:44.It is hoped the announcements today will help that figure start to fall.

:05:45. > :05:52.Later on Look North. We're talking driving and distractions.

:05:53. > :05:56.A massive 42,000 drivers in Yorkshire have points on their

:05:57. > :06:01.licence for being distracted at the wheel. I find out what happened in a

:06:02. > :06:04.car simulator when you take your eyes off the road.

:06:05. > :06:10.Former Rotherham MP Denis MacShane has admitted to making false expense

:06:11. > :06:13.claims of nearly ?13,000. MacShane, who's also the former Europe

:06:14. > :06:16.Minister, pleaded guilty to one charge of false accounting at the

:06:17. > :06:20.Old Bailey in London. Our political reporter James Vincent joins us now

:06:21. > :06:28.from Sheffield. James, what exactly did he do? Well Denis Macshane is

:06:29. > :06:35.the hype profile former MP caught up in the expenses scandal. He was

:06:36. > :06:41.rather MP. And he was Europe Minister for three years under Tony

:06:42. > :06:47.Blair. It is his work in Europe that got him into trouble. 19 fake

:06:48. > :06:54.invoices submitted asking for money for research and translation. They

:06:55. > :06:58.were from a company controlled by Denis Macshane. The signatures of

:06:59. > :07:06.the managers on those receipts were not genuine. A total of ?13,000 was

:07:07. > :07:10.claimed. Denis Macshane 20 did not personally profit from any of that

:07:11. > :07:17.but today he pleaded guilty to the one charge of false accounting. What

:07:18. > :07:21.is the timeline from here? Well he will not be speaking to the media

:07:22. > :07:25.about his plea this morning but he has been quite high profile in the

:07:26. > :07:30.last four years. In the Guardian he broke in 2009 that the expenses

:07:31. > :07:34.scandal would be seen as a wonderful moment of British fiddling. I guess

:07:35. > :07:39.today his moment finally came and he will be back in court on the 19th of

:07:40. > :07:45.December when he and his former constituents will find out his

:07:46. > :07:47.sentence. The Independent Police Complaints

:07:48. > :07:50.Commission is considering launching a formal investigation into the role

:07:51. > :07:53.the Metropolitan Police Commissioner played on the day of the

:07:54. > :07:56.Hillsborough disaster. Sir Bernard Hogan`Howe was then working for

:07:57. > :07:59.South Yorkshire Police and on duty at Sheffield Boys' Club where

:08:00. > :08:03.relatives and friends of those missing were waiting for news. It's

:08:04. > :08:07.thought the investigation relates to the family of a 14`year`old boy

:08:08. > :08:11.being given false hope when his name was on a list of survivors read out

:08:12. > :08:15.by a police officer. The boy had in fact died.

:08:16. > :08:18.A West Yorkshire town has today become the first place in the north

:08:19. > :08:20.of England where retailers have agreed to stop selling

:08:21. > :08:23.super`strength alcohol. Shop owners in Normanton near Wakefield have

:08:24. > :08:27.signed up to the Reducing the Strength campaign, to try to combat

:08:28. > :08:33.anti`social behaviour. Lager, beers and ciders that contain more than

:08:34. > :08:38.6.5% alcohol will no longer be sold. If it's successful, the scheme could

:08:39. > :08:41.be extended to other areas. Drivers who want to park in Leeds

:08:42. > :08:45.city centre on evenings and Sundays will have to pay from today. A two

:08:46. > :08:49.pound flat rate for evenings has been brought in. On Sundays it'll

:08:50. > :08:53.cost four pounds for the day, or a pound for up to four hours. The

:08:54. > :08:56.council says it knows the changes won't be popular, but it needs to

:08:57. > :09:00.keep traffic moving and encourage people to make the most of public

:09:01. > :09:02.transport. Schoolchildren in Sheffield have

:09:03. > :09:09.taken part in a protest over possible library closures. Pupils at

:09:10. > :09:14.Lydgit Junior School campaigned outside Broomhill library this

:09:15. > :09:18.morning. It's one of the libraries which is threatened with closure, as

:09:19. > :09:21.Sheffield City Council aims to save ?1.6 million. The council has urged

:09:22. > :09:26.people to take part in the ongoing consultation into the future of

:09:27. > :09:34.libraries. Those at the school say they're at risk of losing a valuable

:09:35. > :09:41.resource. It is something that we use and

:09:42. > :09:45.love. It may discourage some of us from reading because it is difficult

:09:46. > :09:49.to get books. We constantly talk about the value of reading for

:09:50. > :09:56.children and the libraries in terms of resources. To have it here is

:09:57. > :10:02.crucial and once it has gone it is something we probably will boost for

:10:03. > :10:05.ever. `` lose for ever. Road safety charity Brake have today

:10:06. > :10:08.called for drivers to resist the temptation to use their phones while

:10:09. > :10:11.driving. The charity, based in Huddersfield, has found that 42,000

:10:12. > :10:14.people in Yorkshire have got points on their licences for using their

:10:15. > :10:17.mobiles at the wheel or being otherwise distracted, for example

:10:18. > :10:20.eating, drinking or tuning the radio. By far the greatest number of

:10:21. > :10:23.offenders in our region are in Sheffield, where 10,500 drivers have

:10:24. > :10:26.been given points after getting caught not giving their full

:10:27. > :10:29.attention to the road. In second place is Leeds with more than 6,500

:10:30. > :10:32.drivers being penalised for distracted driving. And Bradford

:10:33. > :10:42.isn't far behind with just over 6,000. Ian White has the story.

:10:43. > :10:48.Fire crews work to free a motorist trapped inside a car after a

:10:49. > :10:52.collision. Fortunately it is just a training exercise but is something

:10:53. > :10:57.that they do for real far too often. Motorists distracted but we will as

:10:58. > :11:02.a major cause of crashes and mobile phones are often to blame. Using the

:11:03. > :11:06.mobile phone distracts you for just a few minutes. The modern car will

:11:07. > :11:13.have gone a very long way in that time. It ends in devastation for the

:11:14. > :11:17.family and the individual concerned. 42,000 motorists in Yorkshire alone

:11:18. > :11:26.have points on their licences for being distracted at the wheel. Now

:11:27. > :11:29.the charity Brake is calling for a total ban on mobile phones while

:11:30. > :11:35.driving. We would prefer people to turn their mobile phone off. To see

:11:36. > :11:40.how dangerous using a mobile phone at the wheel is I would to the car

:11:41. > :11:46.simulator at Leeds University to see how my driving changed. You are

:11:47. > :11:50.being careful to look at the road every so often. So you're switching

:11:51. > :11:57.your glands from the phone back to the road. `` your glands. That is

:11:58. > :12:04.being safety conscious, more so than someone might do in real life. But

:12:05. > :12:08.you are going quite fast. Now you're into lanes. There is no doubt

:12:09. > :12:15.driving like could lead to serious collision. So would drivers in the

:12:16. > :12:19.lock their mobile phone in their blood? You're having a laugh.

:12:20. > :12:24.Really? Locked in the boot of the card? No. I think it is a good idea

:12:25. > :12:30.because I put my bag on the back seat with my phone in it and then I

:12:31. > :12:35.cannot reach it. You need it in case of emergency. But I do not answer

:12:36. > :12:39.when driving. Many drivers still need to be convinced. But using your

:12:40. > :12:47.phone while driving is illegal and could end in tragedy.

:12:48. > :12:59.Before seven o'clock, we'll have your weekend sport. And he's left

:13:00. > :13:02.his Funky Moped in the Midlands and he's headed North! Comedian Jasper

:13:03. > :13:10.Carrott will be in our studio ahead of a brand new tour.

:13:11. > :13:23.And we get a rare chat with the Arctic Monkeys ahead of their

:13:24. > :13:31.hometown gig in Sheffield tonight. Now for the sport, here's Tanya.

:13:32. > :13:38.There is a suggestion that the former hero down at Elland Road

:13:39. > :13:47.could be involved? Well the United have described it as a derisory

:13:48. > :13:53.offer. Lucas might be was meant to be heading some kind of consortium

:13:54. > :14:01.to buy them. He is a legend at Elland Road. We have heard nothing

:14:02. > :14:11.from Lucas. The club said he did not mention anything when he was over a

:14:12. > :14:18.couple of weeks ago. Adam Pearson, who knows him well, has distanced

:14:19. > :14:24.himself from the matter. I spoke to the leader of Leeds council today

:14:25. > :14:32.and like any lead United fan he once to know more. Anything headed up by

:14:33. > :14:38.Lucas, who is a legend, anyone who talks about working with the

:14:39. > :14:44.supporters trust, you have to be interested in that. We all want more

:14:45. > :14:49.detail. So ( for all international duties meant that just the League

:14:50. > :14:59.one Ansley two sides were in action at the weekend. Hansen and Wells, a

:15:00. > :15:12.vintage strike partnership. Yesterday they got together against

:15:13. > :15:20.Coventry. For the hat`trick, this penalty came after the bantams fell

:15:21. > :15:27.behind again. Wells finished from the spot. They bounced just above

:15:28. > :15:32.rather, who beat Stevenage. In the second half quart Davis outmuscled

:15:33. > :15:40.the keeper to make it two points. Michael O'Connor saved the best to

:15:41. > :15:53.last. Colour as the defending from Sheffield United gifted the lead. No

:15:54. > :16:01.such problems for Chesterfield who are joint top of league one. Oliver

:16:02. > :16:04.Banks put them ahead at Torquay. And Ryan Bowman got on the end of Luke

:16:05. > :16:10.O'Neill's cross to put your in front against Plymouth. But they threw

:16:11. > :16:24.away the lead later with some tentative defending and finished

:16:25. > :16:28.with the scores equal. He's not old enough to drive a car

:16:29. > :16:32.on the roads, but he is driving them at around 160 miles per hour on the

:16:33. > :16:35.race track! 16`year`old Alex Gill from Womersley fits in race driving

:16:36. > :16:37.around his A`levels. But while his talent and dedication can't be

:16:38. > :16:41.questioned, there's another ingredient Alex needs if he's to

:16:42. > :16:47.reach the top of his sport. Ian Bucknell reports.

:16:48. > :16:52.The sun comes up over Rockingham Raceway in Northampton and the most

:16:53. > :16:57.important day of Alex Gill's driving career. He is a reigning British

:16:58. > :17:03.karting champion but this is just the second time that he has raced

:17:04. > :17:09.cars. I'm quite nervous. I just have to make sure that the car is ready.

:17:10. > :17:15.Whilst Alex gets ready for the race, his dad Steve fears it could be his

:17:16. > :17:21.last. It costs ?150,000 to support a driver through a season. Those

:17:22. > :17:25.sponsors are vital. He knows if I do not managed to get him, shall

:17:26. > :17:32.partners before March is probably where it ends. It is not a nice

:17:33. > :17:40.situation but it is a fact of life. Alex is taking part in the formula

:17:41. > :17:46.Renault Autumn cup. His mother cannot bear to match `` to watch. If

:17:47. > :17:53.I sit in a certain spot and he does not do well, I sit somewhere else.

:17:54. > :17:57.We do have superstitions. Alex steadily improved his time is in

:17:58. > :18:02.spite of gearbox problems. But at the start of the race he lost second

:18:03. > :18:07.place in the grid. That is inexperienced. But he soon starts to

:18:08. > :18:13.pick off cars in front of him and that is talent. Alex finishes

:18:14. > :18:16.second. His dad is pleased but also frustrated knowing that his son may

:18:17. > :18:25.not get the chance to fulfil his potential. He has 10% of the budget

:18:26. > :18:31.of the people he is racing against and so what he has got, I have to

:18:32. > :18:36.back it to the last bit that I can. Alex has achieved a lot in his short

:18:37. > :18:49.career. Whether his progress continues may depend more on money

:18:50. > :19:13.than motor racing ability. I am slightly in all of the next

:19:14. > :19:19.guess! `` in awe of the next guest. He is one of the's best`known

:19:20. > :19:27.comedians. He is now going back on the road. It is good to see you. We

:19:28. > :19:37.are going to go back in time a little bit. Remember that white

:19:38. > :19:41.suit. You rose to fame in 1975 with the single Funky Moped. Let's have a

:19:42. > :19:58.look at you in action on Top of the Pops.

:19:59. > :20:07.Sorry to make you cringe! You rose to fame with that single. It was the

:20:08. > :20:14.B`side. What can you tell us about that? It was banned by the BBC. I'm

:20:15. > :20:22.the only person that I know in Britain who had a record banned by

:20:23. > :20:29.the BBC, and an OBEs! But it was the comedy that made your name. I sent

:20:30. > :20:34.myself up doing Top of the Pops because I should never have been

:20:35. > :20:40.there, really. I was in the folk scene and they thought it was

:20:41. > :20:52.hysterical. But things have moved on a bit since then. I remember you in

:20:53. > :21:05.the 1980s very well, shows like Carrott's Lib and Carrott's

:21:06. > :21:12.Commercial Breakdown. Saturday nights in the 1980s, that meant you.

:21:13. > :21:17.It was like then. It was real pressure. I was doing 40 minute

:21:18. > :21:22.shows and all the material was written in the week. It is not as if

:21:23. > :21:30.you had rehearsed it anywhere and you had to go straight to air. It

:21:31. > :21:38.really was pressure but a fantastic experience. What about your new

:21:39. > :21:42.material? There are so many comics around now. None of them are old

:21:43. > :21:50.enough to do material about grandchildren getting old, looking

:21:51. > :21:57.forward to death! Let us have a look.

:21:58. > :22:03.I cannot get rid of them. I am cleaning up after them, my arm up

:22:04. > :22:15.the EU banned because Buzz Lightyear has gone swimming! Three hours solid

:22:16. > :22:19.playing piggyback. I fell off! What you think about new comics?

:22:20. > :22:25.They are very good. The good thing about comedy now is that whatever

:22:26. > :22:33.you like, you can get it. Stand`up comedy used to be ten minutes on the

:22:34. > :22:42.Cilla Black show. I tend to do what I have always done, no bad language,

:22:43. > :23:00.keep it clean. And when I do the show in Wakefield in February, that

:23:01. > :23:17.the theatre Royal! Wonderful people. I am coming with a show called

:23:18. > :23:22.stand`up and rock. We could talk to you for hours, but you for hours,

:23:23. > :23:26.but your band! Now they're one of the biggest bands

:23:27. > :23:29.in the world, and can you believe it's been over ten years since they

:23:30. > :23:32.formed in their native High Green on the outskirts of Sheffield? Well,

:23:33. > :23:35.five number one albums later, they're back in their hometown to

:23:36. > :23:39.play Sheffield Arena. The original date had to be cancelled because of

:23:40. > :23:43.illness. But our man Shamir Masri has been given exclusive access to

:23:44. > :23:51.catch up with a couple of the band. Having yet again reached the number

:23:52. > :23:55.one spot with their latest album, the Arctic Monkeys are undoubtedly

:23:56. > :24:05.one of the most successful bands in the world.

:24:06. > :24:13.It is amazing that people still like us. We never expected all of our

:24:14. > :24:19.albums to be successful. You pretend it is not bothered `` you're not

:24:20. > :24:26.bothered whether it gets to number one. But when it does, it is

:24:27. > :24:30.exciting. There are back with a homecoming gig that had to be

:24:31. > :24:46.cancelled when the lead singer picked up a virus. We had to wait

:24:47. > :24:53.until Disney on ice was over! The family have all got ice skate!

:24:54. > :24:57.Tonight fans of their music will be packed into the venue for their

:24:58. > :25:06.first Sheffield gig in over two years. I think we have killed up a
