:00:20. > :00:26.Join us for a special Look North a little later on, when we will listen

:00:27. > :00:31.to this wonderful choir. That is towards the end of the programme,

:00:32. > :00:34.but while their June letter the rest of the headlines. Thank you.

:00:35. > :00:37.Our main story tonight. A political career ends in disgrace. The former

:00:38. > :00:44.cabinet minister and South Yorkshire MP Denis MacShane is jailed for

:00:45. > :00:47.making bogus expenses claims. It's a dream come true ` we travel

:00:48. > :00:57.to Lapland with five`year`old Beatrice. There is widespread

:00:58. > :01:00.disruption on the nail right works due to the adverse weather. We'll

:01:01. > :01:06.have the latest situation from York station. The Met office have a

:01:07. > :01:08.warning in place for gales on Christmas Eve. That Christmas

:01:09. > :01:20.forecast, up shortly. First tonight, the former Labour

:01:21. > :01:23.cabinet minister and Rotherham MP Denis MacShane has been jailed for

:01:24. > :01:28.six months for making bogus expenses claims. He admitted false accounting

:01:29. > :01:35.by filing 19 fake receipts which amounted to nearly ?13,000. The

:01:36. > :01:39.judge said the former Europe minister had shown a flagrant breach

:01:40. > :01:42.of trust in the democratic system. Our political correspondent Len

:01:43. > :01:51.Tingle has been at the Old Bailey in London and joins us now. Then, over

:01:52. > :02:00.to you. Good evening. Denis MacShane now joins 15 MPs who have been

:02:01. > :02:05.jailed since that 2009 MPs expense scandal. The judge, Mr Justice

:02:06. > :02:09.Sweeney, said he had no alternative to jail him because of the sustained

:02:10. > :02:15.and repeated dishonesty. There was 90 invoices he sent in into bars and

:02:16. > :02:20.five and 2008 were supposed to be for research and translation

:02:21. > :02:25.services from a think tank. In actual account, he owned that think

:02:26. > :02:29.tank and owned and wrote those invoices themselves. There are those

:02:30. > :02:35.in the room who saved this follows on from Mr McShane's cavalier

:02:36. > :02:39.approach to his expenses. This garage tacked onto a semidetached

:02:40. > :02:42.house in Rotherham was the start of betrayal that led to the downfall of

:02:43. > :02:48.Denis MacShane. He said this was his constituency office. Look at the

:02:49. > :02:53.place. He spent ?125,000 on the garage in just a few years. He

:02:54. > :03:06.claimed for gas even though there is no gas heating. He claimed Fred

:03:07. > :03:10.television. Marlene Guest also had her suspicions about excessive

:03:11. > :03:18.claims. It was the laptop. How can anyone get through that many

:03:19. > :03:22.laptops? Then numerous complaints for years were dismissed. Former

:03:23. > :03:26.Labour councillor Peter Thirlwell said it was sour grapes because he

:03:27. > :03:35.wanted a bid of MP himself. Marlene Guest says she is a local raiser of

:03:36. > :03:39.the far right party. By 2010 their persistent sore Denis MacShane

:03:40. > :03:44.ordered to repay 4005 and a pounding overpaid amount by the Parliamentary

:03:45. > :03:47.authority. But the legal inquiry appeared to stall for lack of

:03:48. > :03:51.evidence. It is not surprising as it was hard to believe he was anything

:03:52. > :03:56.other than above board. Parachuted into a by`election, he was marked

:03:57. > :04:05.out for high office. He became a minister in Jack Straw's Foreign

:04:06. > :04:08.Office. He had fallen out of favour and returned to the backbenches that

:04:09. > :04:14.continue to travel the world, he says as an unofficial government

:04:15. > :04:18.adviser. He continued to travel the world. He says an unofficial

:04:19. > :04:23.government adviser. There were some who wondered how he could afford it

:04:24. > :04:30.on just a basic MP salary. In November last year, he answered that

:04:31. > :04:35.question in a Parliamentary report. If our report contains new material

:04:36. > :04:43.then the police can use it. Denis MacShane admitted he submitted bogus

:04:44. > :04:51.invoices. That led to a new police inquiry and eventually a court case.

:04:52. > :04:59.He pleaded guilty to false accounting. He must be now counting

:05:00. > :05:06.the cost. He has lost his career, his reputation and his future. The

:05:07. > :05:09.trial judge said sentence had been reduced because of previous good

:05:10. > :05:15.conduct but he will be imprisoned for Christmas and New Year and must

:05:16. > :05:18.serve at least three months. Also, Mr McShane had decided he was going

:05:19. > :05:23.to plead guilty at the very last minute, and for that reason he must

:05:24. > :05:29.serve at least three months of that six`month sentence.

:05:30. > :05:32.Tomorrow will mark a year since church organist Alan Greaves was

:05:33. > :05:36.attacked on his way to midnight mass in Sheffield. He later died in

:05:37. > :05:39.hospital. Now, Alan's daughter Alison has spoken publicly for the

:05:40. > :05:43.first time about the loss of her father. The mother of two lives in

:05:44. > :05:46.Mozambique, where she works as a missionary. Kate Bradbrook has been

:05:47. > :05:54.finding out how she, Alan's widow Maureen, and his friends plan to

:05:55. > :05:57.mark the anniversary of his death. A happy family picture, but beneath

:05:58. > :06:03.the surface Maureen Greaves and her family are still dealing with the

:06:04. > :06:07.loss of her husband, Alan. Tomorrow maeks exactly a year since he was

:06:08. > :06:15.randomly attacked on his way to midnight mass. He never regained

:06:16. > :06:18.consciousness. It has been an incredibly lonely journey, in the

:06:19. > :06:25.fact that I've been conscious of Alan's absence everyday, and I still

:06:26. > :06:29.cry for the loss of him. But also it has been a year of meeting some

:06:30. > :06:32.incredible people and, not only have they been enquiring about how I've

:06:33. > :06:37.got on with my journey, but they have wanted to express some things

:06:38. > :06:40.they have been going through. Despite being a close family,

:06:41. > :06:43.daughter Alison and her two children live in Mozambique, something which

:06:44. > :06:53.was particularly hard in the weeks and months after Alan's death. There

:06:54. > :06:56.is not really anybody there who knew my dad, so it was difficult to not

:06:57. > :07:00.have somebody there who I could remember him with, talk about him

:07:01. > :07:05.with. It was a very difficult year being so far away from everybody.

:07:06. > :07:09.This Christmas I think was always going to be very special to me, in

:07:10. > :07:13.that it was going to be that time of remembering my dad again, and being

:07:14. > :07:17.with my family and being able to do that freely. So there is definitely

:07:18. > :07:21.going to be moments of sadness and of reflection. I am going to miss my

:07:22. > :07:25.dad not being here for sure. But I have two small children and there is

:07:26. > :07:28.always a celebration involved with kids at Christmas, and there's lots

:07:29. > :07:36.of things to look forward to as well.

:07:37. > :07:44.For Alan's friends at this church, it is a time to reflect and

:07:45. > :07:48.remember. We supported each other in our own grief because we have missed

:07:49. > :07:52.Alan, not only in the music group, but as a personal friend as well. It

:07:53. > :07:55.has been really difficult for everybody in the church and in the

:07:56. > :08:00.community. It has had a ripple effect on the community, but I think

:08:01. > :08:04.we are all pulling together. We have seen the media interest which has

:08:05. > :08:12.gone absolutely around the world. His memory will last for ever.

:08:13. > :08:16.Tomorrow night, a special service called A Celebration of Light will

:08:17. > :08:29.be held at the spot where Alan was attacked. A fitting tribute for a

:08:30. > :08:33.man who brightened so many lives. Such a tragic loss. ?? new line

:08:34. > :08:37.Later on Look North: We'll be live at York station to see what impact

:08:38. > :08:45.the terrible weather is having on the Christmas getaway.

:08:46. > :08:49.Other news from around Yorkshire now, and police in Sheffield are

:08:50. > :08:52.going back to the scene of a murder exactly a week after it happened to

:08:53. > :08:55.appeal for more information. 36`year`old Simon Holdsworth was

:08:56. > :08:58.killed as he walked home late on Monday night in the Hackenthorpe

:08:59. > :09:01.area of the city. Tonight officers will be handing out leaflets,

:09:02. > :09:03.putting up posters and speaking to members of the public as they

:09:04. > :09:07.continue their investigation. Mr Holdsworth died from head injuries,

:09:08. > :09:10.but as yet the police have not found the murder weapon.

:09:11. > :09:13.Councils in North Yorkshire have collected more than ?12 million this

:09:14. > :09:18.year in car parking charges and fines. The figures from the motoring

:09:19. > :09:25.organisation the RAC also show that York has made almost ?5 million from

:09:26. > :09:29.charges and Leeds over ?6 million. The RAC is calling for more of the

:09:30. > :09:38.money generated in charges to be spent on improving Yorkshire's

:09:39. > :09:41.roads. A pensioner from Leeds who was well

:09:42. > :09:44.known for campaigning on various causes has died. Ivy Needham was

:09:45. > :09:48.awarded an MBE for leading the fight for the Maxwell pensioners in the

:09:49. > :09:52.1990s. She was part of a group of pensioners who fought a long running

:09:53. > :09:54.battle for compensation against the former owner of Mirror Group

:09:55. > :09:57.newspapers. The 88`year`old died at her nursing home on Thursday.

:09:58. > :10:01.Bad weather, last minute shopping and the start of the Christmas

:10:02. > :10:03.getaway ` it's all leading up to serious disruption for commuters

:10:04. > :10:09.this evening. There are already cancellations on the railways and

:10:10. > :10:20.severe delays on the roads. Our reporter Phil Bodmer is at York

:10:21. > :10:24.railway station for us now. Well traditionally this is the busiest

:10:25. > :10:27.day, then the busiest days of the critters period, with thousands of

:10:28. > :10:31.people taking to the road. However, those journeys have been somewhat

:10:32. > :10:34.disrupted because of that act there's weather. Let's get the

:10:35. > :10:40.latest on how it is affecting East Coast Trains at York station. John,

:10:41. > :10:46.what is the latest picture? You have had a number of issues. Many people

:10:47. > :10:49.have taken our advice trouble early. We have lifted all ticket

:10:50. > :10:58.restriction for the rest of the date and tomorrow, and also made our wide

:10:59. > :11:05.free that Wi`Fi free. How come the rail network grinds to a halt? I

:11:06. > :11:08.think everything job is difficult. The roads around North Yorkshire are

:11:09. > :11:11.difficult, and the flight as well thought we are no difficult anyone

:11:12. > :11:15.else. We are working hard and doing everything we can to get people back

:11:16. > :11:19.of the Yorkshire the Christmas time. What Nokia backs on the people who

:11:20. > :11:26.have not taken that advice? They be out tomorrow. Restrictions in place

:11:27. > :11:31.or will they remain lifted? They are restricted for tomorrow. They are

:11:32. > :11:34.advised to listen to your local radio station for the latest

:11:35. > :11:41.information on trains, and also check our website. Many banks

:11:42. > :11:47.denied. We will have a final update later on. Other train operators do

:11:48. > :11:51.have restriction. Trans`Pennine express have disruption affecting

:11:52. > :11:56.routes between York, Leeds and across the Manchester. If your child

:11:57. > :11:59.of them, please do check them out. East Midlands Trains have delays

:12:00. > :12:03.from Sheffield to London because weather. Cross`country services have

:12:04. > :12:07.been disrupted right across a network, between the lobbies of

:12:08. > :12:16.England and heading down through Leeds and Chesterfield ``

:12:17. > :12:20.north`east. Issues on the roads. But as in particular are having problems

:12:21. > :12:32.because of the sheer volume of traffic and heavy rain. In North

:12:33. > :12:44.Derbyshire, the A57 is closed. Many shopping centre outlets are closed.

:12:45. > :12:51.Don't forget to check out your local radio station throughout the night,

:12:52. > :12:55.and they will be on air tomorrow morning. From York station, back to

:12:56. > :13:00.you. Coming up before 7pm: The trip of a

:13:01. > :13:11.lifetime ` as five`year`old Beatrice gets to meet the real Father

:13:12. > :13:14.Christmas in Lapland. And we'll see Barnsley Youth Choir

:13:15. > :13:23.sing their hearts out to bring you some Christmas cheer.

:13:24. > :13:26.Onto the football and possibly the most significant result for our

:13:27. > :13:29.teams at the weekend was Sheffield Wednesday's defeat. The manner of it

:13:30. > :13:42.could put pay to Stuarts Gray's chances of getting the manager's job

:13:43. > :13:45.long term. Here's Tanya. The Sheffield Wednesday fans made

:13:46. > :13:51.their feelings clear. Then watch their side slumped to defeat to

:13:52. > :13:56.Bournemouth. When you get beat by home, we knew it we would we do get

:13:57. > :14:00.at the bottom three. Unfortunately have not done. We have not defended

:14:01. > :14:09.whelps Tapia conceded to sloppy goals sub at the end of the day, the

:14:10. > :14:11.chairman has a to make. . This game marked the launch of

:14:12. > :14:16.anti`discrimination campaign headed by former Leeds striker Robbie

:14:17. > :14:22.Rogers, who revealed a division he is gay. It is a very personal

:14:23. > :14:29.thing. Part of me was I need to take time. Part of me was it was a huge

:14:30. > :14:40.problem and I need to make that statement and do something about it.

:14:41. > :14:43.It will change. I hope things will change. Match of the Dane was

:14:44. > :14:51.Rotherham versus Wolverhampton. Rob went up with two goals. Bad news

:14:52. > :14:54.today is that the play has been recalled by Wigan. Steve Evans was

:14:55. > :15:06.fear is that the referee gave a penalty for handball. He scored and

:15:07. > :15:09.went to square the match 3`3. Hats off to the fans of Chesterfield who

:15:10. > :15:15.went to Exeter and Friday night. Bank of this they got a win. It took

:15:16. > :15:26.them top and they stayed there after a jaw `` bank God.

:15:27. > :15:32.Now, Christmas stories don't get much more heart`warming than this. A

:15:33. > :15:35.five`year`old girl from Whitley near Selby with a genetic muscular

:15:36. > :15:38.disease has been to Lapland on a dream trip to meet the Real Father

:15:39. > :15:41.Christmas. Beatrice Howden was selected for the special holiday by

:15:42. > :15:45.Martin House Children's Hospice. It's part of BBC Radio York's good

:15:46. > :15:48.night's sleep appeal. We'll hear from Beatrice and her dad in a

:15:49. > :15:57.moment but first Heidi Tomlinson reports from Lapland in Finland.

:15:58. > :16:03.I'd like to welcome to welcome you one more time to the special flights

:16:04. > :16:07.to Santa Claus' home. Leeds Bradford to Lapland, a child's dream

:16:08. > :16:13.destination. The excitement was palpable, not least for the Howden

:16:14. > :16:24.family from Whitley, near Selby. We're going to Lapland to see the

:16:25. > :16:30.real Father Christmas, the real one. What is that green on your eyes? All

:16:31. > :16:33.elves have green eyes. Five`year`old Beatrice has spinal muscular

:16:34. > :16:36.atrophy. She was treated to this trip by Leeds Bradford Airport,

:16:37. > :16:39.which supports Martin House Children's Hospice. A sleigh ride

:16:40. > :16:43.over a frozen river is a magical way to find Santa's home. Beatrice then

:16:44. > :16:52.decides she would like to throw snowballs at his elves. You want me

:16:53. > :16:59.to throw it at an elf? A girl. A girl elf? On your behalf. That was a

:17:00. > :17:05.good shot. Finally, it is time for Beatrice and her brother Henry to

:17:06. > :17:17.meet the man himself. You are all covered in snow. What would you like

:17:18. > :17:24.for Christmas? Oh yes, this is a magical one. A frozen cheese

:17:25. > :17:31.sandwich. This is a dragon. Did you bring this dragon with you? It is

:17:32. > :17:37.not a dragon. It is my brother. Is it? I thought it was a dragon.

:17:38. > :17:41.Captivated by Santa, but the moment had to end, and what better way than

:17:42. > :17:45.with a kiss goodbye and a message for everyone back home? My elves

:17:46. > :17:52.know where Yorkshire is and we will be there. A final treat awaits. The

:17:53. > :17:56.Huskies are raring to go. That is one happy little girl. The real

:17:57. > :18:00.Santa and the husky ride all in the space of a few hours, and I must

:18:01. > :18:11.admit it has been a real privilege to be part of it. Beatrice and

:18:12. > :18:17.Angela are here. Theatres, what was like a meet in Father Christmas? It

:18:18. > :18:23.was awesome. Was he funny? Did you feel nervous? I can't imagine you

:18:24. > :18:37.getting nervous. What did you ask for? This was a remarkable trip. It

:18:38. > :18:42.was assured of a lifetime. But Beatrice Father Christmas, it was

:18:43. > :18:46.great. If the imagine what it is like to meet Father Christmas, then

:18:47. > :18:51.it happened exactly as you would imagine it. Everything from Rudolph

:18:52. > :19:02.to Father Christmas, the elves, the snow. It was picture perfect. What

:19:03. > :19:08.was the best part? Seeing Father Christmas. You were a bit naughty to

:19:09. > :19:16.those els. You are throwing snowballs at them. What did they

:19:17. > :19:24.say? It was fun. Your brother went as well. Andrew, tell us about the

:19:25. > :19:30.appeal. The appeal is with BBC Radio York, and it is to help raise

:19:31. > :19:40.?120,000 to help families like ours who use the services. Sorry about

:19:41. > :19:45.that. One of the things with our family is that there is a high cost

:19:46. > :19:51.with sleep deprivation, and Martin house health of that and gives us a

:19:52. > :19:56.good night 's sleep. It just shows the kindness of people listening to

:19:57. > :20:02.the station. Animals blown away by the kindness of people in Yorkshire.

:20:03. > :20:15.It is a fantastic county `` I am always blown away. Have you enjoyed

:20:16. > :20:23.yourself Beatrice? The whole thing takes some beating. It'll take

:20:24. > :20:28.some. Daddy being told to be quiet. Thank you for coming in. Happy New

:20:29. > :20:32.Year. Thank you. And you can find out more about the

:20:33. > :20:39.Good Night's Sleep campaign by going online. Just go to bbc.co.uk forward

:20:40. > :20:49.slash Radio York. I think we have a star of the future. We went to film

:20:50. > :20:52.the Christmas special and it was memorable. The memories will stay

:20:53. > :21:02.with us forever. Beatrice had a fantastic time. We saw the

:21:03. > :21:04.reindeers. Was brilliant. The plane landed in snow and took off. Can I

:21:05. > :21:12.show you the pictures. landed in snow and took off. Can I

:21:13. > :21:19.This is the river use in Yorkshire. That is quite high. I'm sure the

:21:20. > :21:26.environmental agency will look at the catchments with interest. The

:21:27. > :21:33.second picture came in today from Sheffield, luck and wet and

:21:34. > :21:35.uninspired. This is very nice. This is Castle Howard looking

:21:36. > :21:54.Christmassy. Keep the pictures coming in. We start with a warning.

:21:55. > :22:00.Widespread gales across Yorkshire. It is a pretty strong winds of 50 to

:22:01. > :22:04.60 miles an hour. Deep low pressure. The good news is that conditions

:22:05. > :22:09.will settle down for Christmas Day and Boxing Day, but then we have

:22:10. > :22:14.another dark border coming in Thursday night. There is a swirl of

:22:15. > :22:17.cloud which brought in the rain. It is clearing but we have a wave on

:22:18. > :22:21.that weather front which will bring more rain from the south`west

:22:22. > :22:24.through the course of the night. A bit of a respite over the next few

:22:25. > :22:30.hours, but a watch from the south`west, the rain purchasing.

:22:31. > :22:34.That in turn will clear later tonight. The wind will pick up, and

:22:35. > :22:39.we will see the lowest temperatures down to two Celsius. There is a

:22:40. > :22:49.chance of icy patches. The sun rises in the morning at 8:30am. It is very

:22:50. > :22:53.windy tomorrow. There are scattered showers and sunshine on Christmas

:22:54. > :22:56.Eve. Though showers could be wintry, especially of the hills weather

:22:57. > :22:59.could be snow by the end of the day. Eastern areas are seeing a lot

:23:00. > :23:04.of dry and sunny weather. The main feature of the weather tomorrow will

:23:05. > :23:08.be the widespread south`westerly gales. Tim Butcher is just slightly

:23:09. > :23:19.below the late December average at six Celsius `` the temperature. On

:23:20. > :23:26.Christmas Day, a few wintry showers possible. It is possible that over

:23:27. > :23:30.the Pennines it could be a white Christmas. The gales and heavy rain

:23:31. > :23:40.return on Thursday night into Friday. Did you enjoy that

:23:41. > :23:53.Beatrice? There's only one thing better than Paul is the weather

:23:54. > :23:57.girl. Anything can happen. It's the last full Look North for a

:23:58. > :24:00.few days over Christmas, so to wish you all the best this festive

:24:01. > :24:03.season, we've enlisted some help. Barnsley Youth Choir visited the BBC

:24:04. > :24:07.building this afternoon and they've been singing their hearts out. It
