:00:00. > :00:08.throughout the evening on the BBC News Channel. We are back with the
:00:09. > :00:20.Good evening. We'll have the latest on the bad weather on the way and
:00:21. > :00:23.the sports news in a moment. But first tonight, the former detective
:00:24. > :00:26.who led the investigation into the murder of a Leeds policeman ten
:00:27. > :00:29.years ago, says there should be tougher sentences for anyone caught
:00:30. > :00:31.carrying a firearm. Former Detective Chief Superintendent Chris Gregg
:00:32. > :00:34.made the comments on the tenth anniversary of the death of PC Ian
:00:35. > :00:42.Broadhurst. Here's Spencer Stokes. It was on Boxing Day in 2003 that PC
:00:43. > :00:47.Ian Broadhurst lost his life while on a routine police patrol. He was
:00:48. > :00:52.shot in the chest and head by a former US Marine. He was captured
:00:53. > :00:59.five days later at a guesthouse in Gateshead. He will serve at least 37
:01:00. > :01:03.years in prison. The man who led the hunt said all criminals caught
:01:04. > :01:07.carrying guns should be handed longer prison sentences. He thinks
:01:08. > :01:12.that would reduce the numbers of police officers being shot. One
:01:13. > :01:18.immediate thing that needs to be done is toughening up sentencing for
:01:19. > :01:22.gun crime. At the moment, it is a mandate 35 years in prison for a man
:01:23. > :01:28.who is unlawfully carrying a fire man. If that is doubled to a
:01:29. > :01:34.mandatory ten year sentence, they would serve five years. That is much
:01:35. > :01:39.more realistic and much more of a substantial sentence, which would be
:01:40. > :01:46.returned. Within two years of the killing, the West Yorkshire force
:01:47. > :01:51.lost another officer. At the same time another PC worth injured. Less
:01:52. > :01:58.than a month ago, another e`mail officer was shot in Leeds. She
:01:59. > :02:02.sustained serious injuries. `` female officer. We thought the
:02:03. > :02:08.murder of PC Broadhurst would have been a turning point. I think things
:02:09. > :02:13.have got worse. It is a stark mind about the dangers that police
:02:14. > :02:22.officers are facing every day of the week. `` a stark reminder. A
:02:23. > :02:27.memorial stands where PC Broadhurst was shot a decade ago. Flowers were
:02:28. > :02:31.placed by former colleagues and family members. It shocked the
:02:32. > :02:36.country in 2003 and still has repercussions today. Two people were
:02:37. > :02:39.taken to hospital after a car collided with a house in the
:02:40. > :02:42.Brinsworth area of Rotherham. South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue were
:02:43. > :02:46.called to the house in Rothbury Way in the early hours of Boxing Day
:02:47. > :02:52.morning. One man had to be cut out of the car after he was trapped
:02:53. > :02:56.inside. Thousands of shoppers spent the day bargain hunting at shopping
:02:57. > :03:02.centres and retail parks throughout the region. These were the scenes at
:03:03. > :03:05.Meadowhall. The first shops open at 6am for what is believed to be one
:03:06. > :03:15.of the busiest shopping days of the year. Let's get on to the sport. And
:03:16. > :03:20.we've had a full set of Boxing Day fixtures. Not a great day for our
:03:21. > :03:52.teams. And we'll show you highlights from
:03:53. > :03:56.all of our teams on tonight's late Look North at 10:15pm here on BBC
:03:57. > :04:02.One. And there's a warning of bad weather on the way. Let's get the
:04:03. > :04:11.I hope you have enjoyed the quiet weather today. South`westerly gales
:04:12. > :04:16.will return tomorrow. A touch of frost this evening with one or two
:04:17. > :04:22.icy patches. Heavy rain will sweep in from the south`west overnight.
:04:23. > :04:27.The rain will clear by dawn. Lowest temperatures around about now, down
:04:28. > :04:30.to 0 Celsius. Temperatures rising through the course of the night. The
:04:31. > :04:36.main feature tomorrow will be the strength of the wind. There will be
:04:37. > :04:41.frequent showers in the west and north. The showers will be few and
:04:42. > :04:46.far between. Top temperatures very academic. The weekend looks
:04:47. > :04:51.quieter. Sunshine and a few showers. That is the forecast. If
:04:52. > :04:56.that changes, we will bring you the latest on our bulletin at 10:15pm.
:04:57. > :05:05.You can keep up`to`date on your BBC local radio station. Goodbye.
:05:06. > :05:12.Hello there, most of us have had a quiet Boxing Day, mostly dry,
