:00:00. > :00:00.That's all from us. It's goodbye from me. And on BBC

:00:00. > :00:00.Hello and welcome to Wednesday's Look North. Tonight: The nursery

:00:00. > :00:14.worker on trial for the manslaughter by negligence of a York toddler. The

:00:15. > :00:17.court heard it was 20 minutes before three`year`old Lydia Bishop was

:00:18. > :00:21.found hanged on a slide. The nursery worker denies the charges.

:00:22. > :00:31.Also tonight: Two bodies are found in a boat in Whitby. We'll be live

:00:32. > :00:38.with the latest. Him in goal for why they have an

:00:39. > :00:44.ongoing issue with fly tipping. They are demanding urgent action to clear

:00:45. > :00:46.the mess up. Despite the clouds it looks beautiful here. I will have a

:00:47. > :01:04.detailed forecast. A three`year`old girl who died on

:01:05. > :01:11.her first day at nursery had been left alone for 20 minutes, a court

:01:12. > :01:27.heard today. Three`year`old Lydia Bishop got her neck caught. Sophee

:01:28. > :01:31.Redhead denies the charges. Our Crime Correspondent John Cundy is

:01:32. > :01:37.outside Leeds Crown Court. The prosecution described this as

:01:38. > :01:50.the completely avoidable death of a young child if only the right safety

:01:51. > :01:58.had been put in place. Lydia Bishop, the child who died so

:01:59. > :02:04.tragically on the 17th of September 2012. Arriving at Leeds Crown Court

:02:05. > :02:09.today whether Sam `` was Sophee Redhead, charged with gross

:02:10. > :02:25.negligence and manslaughter. Sophee Redhead was said to have done

:02:26. > :02:29.nothing to stop or supervise Lydia and she had been left entirely on

:02:30. > :02:45.her own. 20 minutes had gone by and only when a member of staff...

:02:46. > :02:57.She wasn't breathing. All attempts to resuscitate her field. They were

:02:58. > :03:03.told there was a dangerous lack of supervision in the weeks before the

:03:04. > :03:08.death. Ropes and coils on the slide were loose. They should have been

:03:09. > :03:15.removed. A child could become entangled in them with fatal

:03:16. > :03:19.consequences. That is what happens to Lydia Bishop. 17 children and

:03:20. > :03:27.three staff had been at the nursery that day. CCTV shown to the court

:03:28. > :03:31.revealed that three and `` she and other children had been playing

:03:32. > :03:40.unsupervised on the slide earlier before the tragedy.

:03:41. > :03:44.All charges have been denied including an alternative to gross

:03:45. > :03:48.negligence against Sophee Redhead, one of the allure to take reasonable

:03:49. > :03:57.care of a child. Tomorrow, the jury will be taken to the site where this

:03:58. > :04:01.tragedy happened. A dying man has admitted killing his

:04:02. > :04:05.wife and daughter at the family home in Wath`upon`Dearne. Seventy year

:04:06. > :04:08.old Peter Redfern strangled and suffocated his wife in the couple's

:04:09. > :04:14.bedroom then waited for his daughter to come home from work before

:04:15. > :04:16.murdering her with a hammer. A court in Sheffield heard today that

:04:17. > :04:19.Redfern couldn't explain his actions, but said he'd acted with

:04:20. > :04:25.diminished responsibility because of medication he was taking to fight

:04:26. > :04:34.his cancer. Olivia Richwald's been following the case.

:04:35. > :04:38.Jean and Sarah read Ferran were not only mother and daughter, they were

:04:39. > :04:48.best friends. But they were killed by the third member of their family.

:04:49. > :04:56.They were private but well liked. Peter Redfern strangled gene in the

:04:57. > :05:02.bedroom and then waited for 33`year`old Sarah to get home from

:05:03. > :05:07.work before killing her with a hammer in the kitchen. Today he

:05:08. > :05:11.pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of his wife on the grounds of

:05:12. > :05:17.diminished responsibility and guilty of his daughter's murder. The court

:05:18. > :05:25.heard he had in durable bone cancer and was on it trucks trial. One drug

:05:26. > :05:32.can cause adverse psychotic effects in extreme cases.

:05:33. > :05:38.The medication he had been taken with appear to have had an effect on

:05:39. > :05:41.his character. He is a man of previously good character and there

:05:42. > :05:50.is no history of violence. He sobbed in the court throughout.

:05:51. > :05:55.After his cancer diagnosis, he had been worried by his wife and

:05:56. > :06:00.daughter would cope without him. The defence barrister said that read

:06:01. > :06:03.Ferran had never been able to explain why he had killed his wife

:06:04. > :06:09.but when he realised that his daughter would soon be home from

:06:10. > :06:18.work he couldn't allow her to see what he had done and he decided to

:06:19. > :06:22.kill her. The court heard that he accepted he would die in jail.

:06:23. > :06:25.Later on Look North. Brain`damaged after an assault ` the South

:06:26. > :06:34.Yorkshireman suing police for failing to get him medical

:06:35. > :06:38.treatment. Now, some of you might remember our

:06:39. > :06:42.next story. The flytippers blighting an area of Goldthorpe in South

:06:43. > :06:45.Yorkshire. Rotting food, household waste and even a settee was dumped.

:06:46. > :06:49.Barnsley Council estimated it would cost them around ?90,000 to clear

:06:50. > :06:52.up. Well, three months on the clear up is yet to begin and nearby

:06:53. > :06:56.residents are thoroughly fed up. They say it's an eyesore as well as

:06:57. > :07:04.a health hazard. Phil Bodmer's been following the story.

:07:05. > :07:10.Getting bigger by the week. The festering pile of decaying waste. In

:07:11. > :07:15.October, we revealed how this disused railway had become an

:07:16. > :07:23.unofficial dumping site. Three months on the tip is spreading. The

:07:24. > :07:28.wet and cold months of winter have actually used the situation. Because

:07:29. > :07:32.the pungent odour that was emanating from this ever`increasing pile of

:07:33. > :07:41.waste is less prevalent than it was. However, people living close by Sea

:07:42. > :07:45.continues to blight their lives. It is definitely a mess. Whether it

:07:46. > :07:50.is any worse than last time we visited is unknown but it needs

:07:51. > :07:57.sorted sooner rather than later. Today a waste management expert told

:07:58. > :08:01.us it could be done to changes in household waste collections.

:08:02. > :08:07.It is a combination of household waste and large items of furniture

:08:08. > :08:11.which have probably come from people not recycling properly at home or

:08:12. > :08:17.not wanting to pay companies to get rid of large items of furniture. Or

:08:18. > :08:24.the companies that are taking it are taking it too cheap and dumping it

:08:25. > :08:28.here. The land belongs to network rail

:08:29. > :08:32.that we have seen a letter saying that prosecutions are needed rather

:08:33. > :08:38.than another clean`up. It is getting worse and worse. Bends

:08:39. > :08:46.are thrown over, nappies. I feel terrible to feel that people

:08:47. > :08:54.are using this to get rid of their rubbish. We do not know if it is

:08:55. > :08:59.local people or people from further afield.

:09:00. > :09:07.Network Rail says it has spent money clearing the rubbish and another

:09:08. > :09:11.?8,000 putting up a fence. It will continue to work with the council to

:09:12. > :09:17.find and prosecute those responsible. A spokesman told us a

:09:18. > :09:21.number of people were facing prosecution.

:09:22. > :09:24.Next tonight, what caused the deaths of two people whose bodies were

:09:25. > :09:27.found on board a boat in Whitby Harbour? Police were called to the

:09:28. > :09:30.vessel, moored off Pier Road, at around ten o'clock this morning.

:09:31. > :09:34.The deaths are being described as unexplained but not suspicious.

:09:35. > :09:42.Let's cross live to Phil Connell who's on the East Coast for us.

:09:43. > :09:46.Phil, what's the latest? The alarm was raised this morning by

:09:47. > :09:51.fishermen on board a neighbouring boat and since then Whitby Harbour

:09:52. > :10:02.has been the scene of people least investigation. The two men had their

:10:03. > :10:12.vessel registered in Milford Haven. `` people lease investigation.

:10:13. > :10:31.The two fishermen were brought to the station but attempts to revive

:10:32. > :10:36.them were sadly unsuccessful. We are shocked. Fishing is a

:10:37. > :10:41.dangerous job. We are praying for the families.

:10:42. > :10:56.Do we have any idea what caused these deaths.

:10:57. > :10:59.Paul is `` police are saying there are no suspicious circumstances.

:11:00. > :11:07.There is a theory that the men may have been overcome by carbon

:11:08. > :11:13.monoxide. Traders were telling me there had been a very strong smell

:11:14. > :11:22.of gas. There were lots of other agencies

:11:23. > :11:30.involved. We simply just had to look at our past in it and the safety

:11:31. > :11:39.elements for our crew and ourselves. As you would expect, a sombre mood

:11:40. > :11:42.here tonight. These fishermen risk their lives day in and day out and

:11:43. > :11:52.for this to happen in the relative safety of the harbour has come as a

:11:53. > :11:56.real shock. In the rest of the day's news around

:11:57. > :12:00.Yorkshire: A man found with serious head injuries in Leeds this morning

:12:01. > :12:03.has died in hospital. Police were called to Whitelock Street near to

:12:04. > :12:06.the Sheepscar junction at 7:30am. It's not yet known what caused the

:12:07. > :12:08.man's injuries. A postmortem will take place to establish the cause of

:12:09. > :12:12.death. A car which was being followed by

:12:13. > :12:15.police in Leeds has ploughed into a house. It happened around 2am at a

:12:16. > :12:19.semidetached house in Stainbeck Road. A woman was unharmed when the

:12:20. > :12:23.BMW crashed into her front room below where she was sleeping. Police

:12:24. > :12:26.say the vehicle failed to stop for officers and drove off down Carr

:12:27. > :12:29.Manor Road before crossing a grass verge and driving into the house.

:12:30. > :12:31.The driver was arrested at the scene.

:12:32. > :12:34.Union members who care for adults with learning disabilities in

:12:35. > :12:38.Doncaster have been meeting today to agree a vote on whether to strike

:12:39. > :12:41.over proposed changes to their pay and conditions. Since September last

:12:42. > :12:44.year the private company Care UK has run the service on behalf of

:12:45. > :12:48.Doncaster Council but staff now face losing extra pay for working

:12:49. > :12:54.evenings and weekends. Unison says staff could lose up to ?10,000 a

:12:55. > :12:57.year. Care UK maintain it has protecting salaries and pensions but

:12:58. > :13:08.some benefits must change in order to save money.

:13:09. > :13:12.Morale is at rock bottom. We pull our rapidly losing interest. They

:13:13. > :13:17.are actively looking for other jobs which will leave the people we look

:13:18. > :13:20.after very vulnerable. Campaigners calling for the Don

:13:21. > :13:23.Valley rail line between Sheffield and Stocksbridge to be reopened have

:13:24. > :13:27.handed in a petition in to the council today. The line is only used

:13:28. > :13:30.for freight trains running to the TATA steel factory but 2500 people

:13:31. > :13:37.have signed in support of getting passenger trains running on it

:13:38. > :13:40.again. An assault victim who suffered

:13:41. > :13:44.serious brain damage after he was arrested and left in a cell for ten

:13:45. > :13:46.hours is suing the police. Dean Hutton, from South Yorkshire, was

:13:47. > :13:49.left without medical treatment despite officers knowing about his

:13:50. > :13:55.injury. South Yorkshire Police said it accepted liability. Kate

:13:56. > :13:58.Bradbrook has been to meet him. Dean Hutton from Wath`upon`Dearne

:13:59. > :14:03.was a healthy 22`year`old until he was hit with a metal pole in 2009.

:14:04. > :14:07.Afterwards he was arrested and left in a police cell for more than ten

:14:08. > :14:14.hours. During that time he suffered permanent brain damage.

:14:15. > :14:20.I was in a coma for three weeks. I did pass a way to times. I ended up

:14:21. > :14:27.with pneumonia. But I've come through it.

:14:28. > :14:30.Dean was arrested because he had an outstanding driving offence but

:14:31. > :14:35.while in custody procedures weren't properly followed.

:14:36. > :14:40.The paramedics had written an advice note that should he deteriorate he

:14:41. > :14:43.should be taken to hospital. The sergeants didn't take this into

:14:44. > :14:50.account when he booked him into the cells. Then the dean vomited and our

:14:51. > :14:53.cases that at that point medical attention should have been sought

:14:54. > :15:04.and if it had been a full recovery would have been made.

:15:05. > :15:12.Dean was brought here. The police have accepted responsibility and

:15:13. > :15:17.offer apologies to the family. The standards have been improved and

:15:18. > :15:22.implemented so maybe it won't happen again.

:15:23. > :15:27.I used to be very active. I played with all and had lots of friends.

:15:28. > :15:34.Now I just stay in the house and go to the gym. I don't have lots of

:15:35. > :15:38.friends. I've got lots of disability is no but I could have made a 100%

:15:39. > :15:51.recovery. The family now plan to seek

:15:52. > :16:02.compensation. Before 7pm: Who says Yorkshire folk

:16:03. > :16:06.are stingy? The wealthy pensioners donating their winter fuel allowance

:16:07. > :16:12.to help others. It is often been said I am a wind`up

:16:13. > :16:27.merchant but today I am. The. The of the clock coming up.

:16:28. > :16:32.The Conservative MP Anne McIntosh is appealing to her own members to be

:16:33. > :16:35.allowed to stand again as a candidate in her safe North

:16:36. > :16:38.Yorkshire seat at the next general election. The chairman and executive

:16:39. > :16:41.of her party have taken the virtually unknown action of refusing

:16:42. > :16:45.to endorse her reselection. As our political editor Len Tingle now

:16:46. > :16:47.reports, it is now down to a last`ditch postal ballot.

:16:48. > :16:55.It is hard to believe that in the rural quiet of this village is

:16:56. > :17:04.ferocious battle for political survival is going on. And Macintosh

:17:05. > :17:12.`` Anne McIntosh has one of the safest seats in the country but her

:17:13. > :17:16.personal future is far from safe. Her local chairman and executive

:17:17. > :17:24.refusing to endorse as a candidate in next year's collection.

:17:25. > :17:28.She seems to be unable to work with the constituency party officers in

:17:29. > :17:35.the smooth running of the association.

:17:36. > :17:44.A personality rather than a policy clash could be what sees her step

:17:45. > :17:55.aside. She seems to confirm this in a letter sent this week.

:17:56. > :18:03.Whether it is something to do with the fact that she is obviously a

:18:04. > :18:11.woman or is it because she has got her 11,000 majority and can put

:18:12. > :18:17.anybody in place, I'm not sure. There is one month to return the

:18:18. > :18:20.ballot papers for a vote that will decide the future of one of the

:18:21. > :18:27.safest Conservative seats in the country.

:18:28. > :18:30.Wealthier pensioners in Yorkshire have donated thousands of pounds of

:18:31. > :18:34.their Winter Fuel Payments to help those who are struggling to keep

:18:35. > :18:38.their homes heated. The payment is a universal benefit of up to ?300. But

:18:39. > :18:41.those who don't need it have been giving it to a charity campaign set

:18:42. > :18:45.up to redistribute the cash to those who do. Each year, around 20,000

:18:46. > :18:47.more pensioners will die in winter months than at other times. It's

:18:48. > :18:52.thought 2.3 million households cannot afford to heat the living

:18:53. > :18:55.areas of their homes. And its problems like those the Surviving

:18:56. > :19:01.Winter appeal has been trying to tackle. So far they've raised

:19:02. > :19:13.?100,000 in our region. Joe Inwood went to see how that money is being

:19:14. > :19:17.used. Wednesday is exercise daily, the

:19:18. > :19:25.chance to get out the house, say friends and keep fit. And feel

:19:26. > :19:34.you've heard a cup of tea and a slice of cake.

:19:35. > :19:41.What can be more important? This is a lifeline. This gets me out and

:19:42. > :19:50.makes me want to go and have my hair done and put my make up done. It is

:19:51. > :19:53.my life. But it is only possible because of

:19:54. > :20:00.people like Wendy. She gets a winter fuel payment but decided her as

:20:01. > :20:04.could be put to better use. Because there are so many people out

:20:05. > :20:08.there who are isolated and on their own, I think it is important that we

:20:09. > :20:18.get this money back into the community where it can be used to

:20:19. > :20:24.relieve some of that isolation. The campaign has raised ?100,000 for

:20:25. > :20:30.groups like this in Yorkshire. 60% has come from individuals. They know

:20:31. > :20:35.there is always more to be done. Sadly there just isn't enough money

:20:36. > :20:41.to fund all the needs that can be found and we do have to rely on the

:20:42. > :20:44.generosity of people who can afford to give money to projects like

:20:45. > :20:49.this. Back at caring together, there is a

:20:50. > :20:56.history lesson looking at artefacts from the First World War. These

:20:57. > :21:07.pensioners, as they look into the past, now that's the group can

:21:08. > :21:10.continue to have a future. The majority owners of Leeds United,

:21:11. > :21:16.GFH Capital, have today agreed a partial sale of its stake in the

:21:17. > :21:20.club. GFK is an investment company based in Bahrain but say the sale of

:21:21. > :21:22.the shares is to British investors, believed to include United's

:21:23. > :21:26.Managing Director David Haigh. Today's development is a further

:21:27. > :21:29.step towards the long term plan for Leeds United to be taken over by a

:21:30. > :21:33.British consortium, led by Haigh. No stopping Sheffield Wednesday at

:21:34. > :21:37.the moment. They are through to the fourth round of the FA Cup. They won

:21:38. > :21:40.their third round replay at home to Macclesfield last night in emphatic

:21:41. > :21:43.style, by four goals to one. Wednesday didn't have it all their

:21:44. > :21:46.own way, despite Chris Maguire giving them the lead. Macclesfield

:21:47. > :21:49.fought back to equalize with a second`half penalty. And Wednesday

:21:50. > :21:53.needed a late flourish of three goals in the final 12 minutes to

:21:54. > :21:58.finish them off. Wednesday will travel to face another League Two

:21:59. > :22:02.side, Rochdale, in round four. And FIFA has confirmed Howard Webb

:22:03. > :22:08.will be the English referee at this year's World Cup finals in Brazil.

:22:09. > :22:11.It's the second time the 42`year`old from Rotherham, seen here in

:22:12. > :22:17.training, has been chosen for the event. He officiated in South Africa

:22:18. > :22:26.in 2010 when he became the first Englishman to take charge of a World

:22:27. > :22:34.Cup final since Jack Taylor in 1974. Good luck to him. Time has been

:22:35. > :22:40.standing still sends a health and say the ban on a winding clock. It

:22:41. > :22:46.was said it was too dangerous for volunteers to clam up. The clock was

:22:47. > :22:57.stopped for the first time an hundred and 40 years. But it has

:22:58. > :23:04.been restarted. A village where it feels time stands still. But time

:23:05. > :23:15.here is very important. Do you have the time? I do. It is to 15 PM.

:23:16. > :23:37.Thank you. It is time 40. It is time for your wok.

:23:38. > :23:45.The banister was physically broken. If you lend against it you would

:23:46. > :23:49.plunge to the ground. Secondly, there was nothing to stop the

:23:50. > :23:53.sliding underneath the banister so you could fall through and hit the

:23:54. > :24:00.ground. The ladder wasn't safe and could slip when you were claiming.

:24:01. > :24:09.When the local Freemasons noticed the clock hadn't moved, they donated

:24:10. > :24:23.money to make the clock safe. We try and wind it twice a week.

:24:24. > :24:30.I live nearby and you get used to it being in the background.

:24:31. > :24:35.It is very positive to have the clock running. We are very pleased

:24:36. > :24:36.about it and the response has been excellent.

:24:37. > :24:43.Next time you glance up at the clock, take a few moments to think

:24:44. > :24:51.of the volunteers who kept it going all these years.

:24:52. > :25:18.Let me show you a couple of pictures that came in. This is my favourite

:25:19. > :25:35.of the week. Tomorrow is a day of sunny intervals

:25:36. > :25:44.and scattered showers. It won't be too bad and eastern areas and

:25:45. > :25:51.showers may become more frequent. That's unlikely we will see any

:25:52. > :25:57.properly winter weather in the rest of January so we are now looking to

:25:58. > :26:06.February four winter is staff. This is a cold front that will move the

:26:07. > :26:14.mild weather out of the way. Temperatures will be close to

:26:15. > :26:21.average. It will spread eastwards overnight with some mist and fog
