:00:00. > :00:08.Welcome to Look North. Our top stories tonight... 15,000 tonnes of
:00:09. > :00:14.tyres go up in smoke at a recycling plant near Selby. At its height
:00:15. > :00:19.smoke from the blaze could be seen from sixty miles away. We'll be live
:00:20. > :00:21.from the scene. Also tonight. Council jobs and services face the
:00:22. > :00:33.chop. Doncaster Council considers closing all of its elderly care
:00:34. > :00:39.homes and shedding a thousand jobs. We have nowhere to go. It is the
:00:40. > :00:42.first time I have been settled in my life.
:00:43. > :00:49.And the football`mad youngster who's overcome physical disability to
:00:50. > :00:54.qualify as a coach. There have been a few showers around. This was
:00:55. > :01:06.Bolton Abbey earlier. Join me for the forecast later in the programme.
:01:07. > :01:09.First tonight ` a huge fire is burning at a recycling plant in
:01:10. > :01:12.North Yorkshire. Around fifteen thousand tonnes of tyres have been
:01:13. > :01:19.ablaze throughout the day, and fire crews from across Yorkshire have
:01:20. > :01:22.been drafted in to tackle it. The blaze broke out shortly after 8.30am
:01:23. > :01:27.this morning at the Gascoigne site in Sherburn in Elmet. It made for an
:01:28. > :01:32.amazing sight over most of Yorkshire. It's sent a pall of smoke
:01:33. > :01:36.thousands of feet into the air ` so big in fact, that you can actually
:01:37. > :01:41.see it from space. Just take a look at this. This is shot from a weather
:01:42. > :01:44.satellite, and you can clearly see the track of the smoke from
:01:45. > :01:47.Sherburn, through York and right over to Whitby around sixty miles
:01:48. > :01:51.away. Our reporter Dave Edwards has spent the day at the scene, and he
:01:52. > :01:59.joins us now live from Sherburn`in`Elmet.
:02:00. > :02:05.Yes, the fire has been burning for ten hours. There is no end in sight.
:02:06. > :02:09.Fire crews are still out in force here and they will be here for some
:02:10. > :02:16.time yet. The smoke continues to fill the sky. Turning day into
:02:17. > :02:23.night, clouds of smoke from thousands of tonnes of tyres. The
:02:24. > :02:27.blaze here in Sherburn. The plumes are thought to have reached heights
:02:28. > :02:36.of 6000 feet, visible for miles around. We received a call after
:02:37. > :02:41.8:30am to a fire on this site. On arrival, a significant developing
:02:42. > :02:50.fire involving waste tyres, approximately 15,000 tonnes, most of
:02:51. > :02:52.that is involved in the fire. 100 firefighters from stations across
:02:53. > :02:57.Yorkshire have been here dealing with this, luckily no one has been
:02:58. > :03:03.hurt but police and the ambulance service have been here just in case
:03:04. > :03:07.they are needed. Thick black smoke has been pouring out of this site
:03:08. > :03:12.for Match Of The Day. We have seen flames in the distance as well.
:03:13. > :03:20.There is a slight smell in the air and people have been told to keep
:03:21. > :03:25.their doors and windows closed. `` much of the day. Pupils were told to
:03:26. > :03:28.stay indoors as the smoke bill owed above the building. Some people came
:03:29. > :03:33.out to see the dramatic scenes themselves.
:03:34. > :03:39.You didn't need to be that close to get a good view. Your pictures from
:03:40. > :03:44.across a huge swathe of Yorkshire show the smoke dominating the
:03:45. > :03:49.skyline. It is seen likely to be repeated tomorrow as this fire
:03:50. > :03:54.continues burn. I am joined now by Nigel
:03:55. > :04:01.Hutchinson, we heard from you earlier, what is the latest?
:04:02. > :04:07.If you imagine a site of seven acres full of tyres stacked 20 feet high,
:04:08. > :04:14.80% of that site involved in the fire, the strategy is to let the
:04:15. > :04:17.fire burn out but in the South are two large buildings and our efforts
:04:18. > :04:24.are to protect those buildings through water curtains to try to
:04:25. > :04:28.keep heat away from the building. This must have been a difficult day
:04:29. > :04:32.for you and your colleagues. Logistically, yes, the only access
:04:33. > :04:40.is from the north and that is the direction the smoke is blowing. We
:04:41. > :04:45.had to withdraw to allow the fire crews to reassemble and reposition
:04:46. > :04:50.equipment to mount a second attack. We have heard warnings to stay
:04:51. > :04:54.indoors and keep doors and windows closed.
:04:55. > :04:58.Is there a risk to health? Clearly we want people to be well
:04:59. > :05:02.away from any smoke plumes, monitoring the weather conditions
:05:03. > :05:07.and the wind direction closely at the moment, the plume is travelling
:05:08. > :05:12.high and away from the public. The sensible precautions are to keep
:05:13. > :05:18.indoors where possible if you are in the line of the plume and if you can
:05:19. > :05:21.smell it, keep windows and doors shut.
:05:22. > :05:26.Briefly, how long will the operation last? As long as it takes, we have
:05:27. > :05:29.relieved crews arriving on the scene this evening, they will stay
:05:30. > :05:33.throughout the night and until the job is done.
:05:34. > :05:39.Thank you very much. As you have heard, the fire is likely to
:05:40. > :05:42.continue for several days, the firefighters are getting ready for
:05:43. > :05:46.the night shift and they have brought in a catering van just down
:05:47. > :05:50.the road. It will be a very busy night for them and we will have more
:05:51. > :05:58.free you on the late programme tonight. Incredible pictures. Big
:05:59. > :06:01.cuts in spending have been confirmed by Doncaster Council today, meaning
:06:02. > :06:04.more than a thousand job losses. All care homes for the elderly will
:06:05. > :06:07.close, along with four day centres. There will also be big cuts to
:06:08. > :06:11.leisure facilities and library services. The council needs to shave
:06:12. > :06:19.more than a hundred million pounds from its budget by 2017. Kate
:06:20. > :06:23.Bradbrook reports. These were the scenes in Tonga in
:06:24. > :06:30.November. Plans were first announced to cut 1200 council jobs. Now, the
:06:31. > :06:34.plans will become a reality `` in Doncaster. Council bosses are
:06:35. > :06:40.attempting to balance the books despite a reduction in funding. We
:06:41. > :06:44.are being presented with a further ?109 million worth of cuts.
:06:45. > :06:53.And therefore if you relate it to a family, that is asking us to deliver
:06:54. > :06:57.with 50% less by 2017. Leisure facilities will also lose more than
:06:58. > :07:02.?2 million in funding, eight more libraries will need to be run by
:07:03. > :07:06.volunteers and at the same time council tax will go are up by nearly
:07:07. > :07:12.2%. Council run care homes like this one
:07:13. > :07:16.will also close under the plans, seven in total over two years.
:07:17. > :07:25.The council or government is disgusting. Where will people go?
:07:26. > :07:29.Who will look after people? It is shocking.
:07:30. > :07:35.We have nowhere to go. It is the first time I have been
:07:36. > :07:41.settled in my life. These people are marvellous.
:07:42. > :07:46.Trade unions said the cuts would not be necessary if past budgets have
:07:47. > :07:50.been better managed. There's been a woeful mismanagement of finances for
:07:51. > :07:53.a number of years and the unions are still raising questions about the
:07:54. > :08:01.amount of money being spent on consultants, the amount spent on
:08:02. > :08:05.senior management posts, seemingly for not large departments.
:08:06. > :08:07.The plans will be finalised next month.
:08:08. > :08:14.It is likely to be much longer for the people of plonk feel the full
:08:15. > :08:17.impact. `` Doncaster. Elsewhere, Sheffield City Council says services
:08:18. > :08:21.will be cut and 600 jobs could be lost as part of a plan to save more
:08:22. > :08:24.than 50 million pounds in the next financial year. The proposals were
:08:25. > :08:28.discussed at a public meeting last night where the council asked for
:08:29. > :08:31.ideas about where it should make the cuts. The proposals currently
:08:32. > :08:34.include cutting 22 million pounds from Adult Social Care budgets, as
:08:35. > :08:39.well as millions of pounds from services supporting young people and
:08:40. > :08:44.recycling. Later on Look North... We are what
:08:45. > :08:47.we eat. Why scientists here in Yorkshire believe the next big

:08:57. > :08:58.The owners of Bridgewater Place ` Yorkshire's tallest building ` have
:08:59. > :09:02.revealed detailed plans of what they're going to do to make it less
:09:03. > :09:06.dangerous. One person has died and several others have been badly
:09:07. > :09:10.injured outside it in strong winds. The current design of the building
:09:11. > :09:19.has been blamed and the changes to it follow recommendations from a
:09:20. > :09:23.coroner. Ian White reports. Screens and canopies, this is how
:09:24. > :09:27.the Yorkshire stood `` Yorkshire tallest building will luck if

:09:33. > :09:36.reduce strong gusts suspended six metres above one of the main route
:09:37. > :09:41.from the South into Leeds. When it is windy, the area around the
:09:42. > :09:46.building becomes dangerous, when Doctor died when a lorry was blown
:09:47. > :09:50.on top of him. The company that owns Bridgewater Place presented its
:09:51. > :09:54.plans today ahead of a formal planning application. A lot of work
:09:55. > :09:57.has gone into the design, we do not want them to look like motorway
:09:58. > :10:04.gantries. This is one of the best office
:10:05. > :10:10.buildings into Leeds. There's no doubt, Bridgewater Place has become
:10:11. > :10:13.for the Council a real headache. It must be a headache for you. We want
:10:14. > :10:20.to fix the problem. We know there are issues to be fixed
:10:21. > :10:25.we think we have something that we can implement, it will work and it
:10:26. > :10:29.will cure the headache. The start of construction work is a
:10:30. > :10:33.year away, people who live and work around Bridgewater Place are still
:10:34. > :10:38.at risk when it is windy. Do you worry when it is windy?
:10:39. > :10:43.Clearly I want to make sure we get this thing started as quickly as
:10:44. > :10:47.possible. As a responsible building owner,
:10:48. > :10:51.there is an issue here and I will not be satisfied until we have put
:10:52. > :10:55.plans in place and the construction fixes the issue. The company would
:10:56. > :10:59.not comment about the death and injuries that have taken place
:11:00. > :11:07.because of legal action but the cost of putting things right will run
:11:08. > :11:10.into many millions of pounds. Jurors, trying the case of a

:11:49. > :11:53.number one was moved away from Leeds Crown Court to hear York College to
:11:54. > :11:57.see the site of the former nursery school playground. It was here 18
:11:58. > :12:04.months ago when Lydia Bishop tragically died on her first day at
:12:05. > :12:09.the school. The trial judge and barristers and jurors were able to
:12:10. > :12:14.see themselves the exact layout of the now closed playground. On the
:12:15. > :12:20.second day of the trial, the Justice spoke to the barristers including
:12:21. > :12:26.the prosecution team who described the case as a completely avoidable
:12:27. > :12:30.death of a child. It is alleged that the nursery assistant Sophie redhead
:12:31. > :12:35.in charge of Lydia did nothing to stop or supervise the child on the

:13:12. > :13:15.Wath`upon`Dearne, near Rotherham, strangled his wife Jean and then
:13:16. > :13:20.beat his daughter Sarah to death with a hammer. He admitted one count

:13:36. > :13:38.Teachers at a school for children with special needs in Rotherham have

:13:43. > :13:45.of the National Union of Teachers at Abbey Special School in Kimberworth
:13:46. > :13:48.say they fear the changes would have a negative impact on the children.
:13:49. > :13:51.They're also concerned that teachers will have to reapply for their jobs.
:13:52. > :13:54.Rotherham Council says a recent assessment of the school found its

:15:15. > :15:15.did you change the way you shop following last year's horse meat
:15:16. > :15:19.scandal? Well it certainly got us talking
:15:20. > :15:23.about where our food comes from and what's actually in it ` but it's not
:15:24. > :15:25.just meat that's in question. Scientists at the Food and
:15:26. > :15:28.Environment Research Agency near York believe changes to climate
:15:29. > :15:32.could mean the next big health risk is likely to be found in things like

:15:36. > :15:41.has had exclusive access to their labs.
:15:42. > :15:46.It was a food scare that shocked us all. A factory is being investigated

:15:57. > :16:01.safety experts were warning for years about the potential for fraud.
:16:02. > :16:05.12 months since the discovery of horse meat in some supermarket
:16:06. > :16:08.products, for many of us it was an eye`opener that changed the way we
:16:09. > :16:13.buy meat. But is meat the only area of
:16:14. > :16:18.concern? At the Food and Environment Research Agency in York, they are
:16:19. > :16:22.still running checks on meat products but their focus is
:16:23. > :16:28.shifting. We are concerned about viruses, some is coming up on the
:16:29. > :16:36.agenda in terms of threat to health and also micro toxins, natural
:16:37. > :16:40.products produced by fundi working their way into the food chain
:16:41. > :16:45.because of climate change. In a nutshell, micro toxins are
:16:46. > :16:46.naturally a caring found in mould growing on cereals, nuts and spices
:16:47. > :16:53.and coffee. The most, there is a tolerable daily
:16:54. > :16:56.limit but some have been found to cause cancer so regulations are in
:16:57. > :17:01.place to monitor food coming from countries where the risk is higher
:17:02. > :17:07.or it was until climate change and that is where this comes in. We are
:17:08. > :17:10.moving to instead of looking at specific entities, we are looking at
:17:11. > :17:16.things that shouldn't be there, that flags up we can use nontargeted
:17:17. > :17:20.analysis to look for threats entering the food chain.
:17:21. > :17:24.Fears over food security have boosted some businesses, places like
:17:25. > :17:28.this delicatessen which has seen trade up by 20% with customers
:17:29. > :17:33.seeking more local and more traceable threats.
:17:34. > :17:40.For a lot of our customers that is why they come here, they know the
:17:41. > :17:45.product they are buying are from the area and there is a traceability
:17:46. > :17:49.which is quite important to them. But the traceability comes at a
:17:50. > :17:52.premium not everyone can afford. It needs scrutiny of the foods that
:17:53. > :18:02.reaches the table grows more important. Grow your own is the
:18:03. > :18:11.moral of that story. I don't but if you do, great. Before seven
:18:12. > :18:15.o'clock. It's little and large! Some new giants of sport in Yorkshire as
:18:16. > :18:18.Leeds Carnegie tipped off the flight. And how guts and
:18:19. > :18:31.determination helped this youngster overcome physical disability to

:18:36. > :18:38.some sports news now, and the UK snooker Championship is to stay at
:18:39. > :18:42.the Barbican centre in York. The competition returned to the venue in
:18:43. > :18:44.2011 after losing the contract in 2006. During last year's
:18:45. > :18:47.championship it was suggested it could be moved after some players
:18:48. > :18:50.complained about conditions. Today the World Snooker Chairman Barry
:18:51. > :18:53.Hearn confirmed York will host the event and said the centre will be
:18:54. > :18:58.better equipped this year to meet their needs. The Sheffield Steelers
:18:59. > :19:01.have a commanding lead in their Challenge Cup Quarter Final against

:19:06. > :19:08.goals from Jeff Legue, man of the match Rob Sirianni, Jason Hewitt and
:19:09. > :19:17.Stefan Meyer secured the Steelers a 4`0 shut out. The return leg in on

:19:29. > :19:35.she in action in Austria in the final world cup race before the team
:19:36. > :19:39.is announced for Sochi. Last weekend she picked up her first podium of
:19:40. > :19:48.the season and despite a couple of injuries she insists her campaign is
:19:49. > :19:52.going to plan. I am still third in the rankings which, considering the
:19:53. > :19:56.results I have not been hitting podiums all the time, I am still
:19:57. > :20:01.happy that there is a group of us at the moment which are hit and miss
:20:02. > :20:03.and everyone is working on different things to bring them together for
:20:04. > :20:06.Sochi. Until now, when we've talked about
:20:07. > :20:10.top flight basketball in Yorkshire it's all been about the Sheffield
:20:11. > :20:13.Sharks. But there's a new kid on the block ` Leeds Carnegie Basketball
:20:14. > :20:16.team are joining them and tomorrow night they've got their first Elite
:20:17. > :20:26.Cup game against Glasgow Rocks. Tanya's been to their final training
:20:27. > :20:30.session before the big game. It is a big night, possibly the
:20:31. > :20:35.biggest night in this young clubs history. They have been going for
:20:36. > :20:40.eight years but they take on Glasgow Rocks. The coach joins me. Give us

:21:02. > :21:07.against the best. Add your guys are not as big, they
:21:08. > :21:12.look big to me but they will look small.
:21:13. > :21:15.We have a reasonably sized line`up but in the professional domain there
:21:16. > :21:24.are big big bodies. We have a line`up taking us up to sixth at
:21:25. > :21:35.nine. They do go bigger again. `` six feet, nine. So, it will be a
:21:36. > :21:39.battle. Also with me as the captain and Danny Evans. What will it be
:21:40. > :21:43.like against the elite? Great for us, creating work and we
:21:44. > :21:48.are practising hard so it is a good experience for us.
:21:49. > :21:53.Can you pull off a shock? Hopefully, not a shock, they have to
:21:54. > :21:57.shoot in the same group. For a young guy, you are from Leeds,
:21:58. > :22:04.what is it like for the club to make this step up? It is amazing.
:22:05. > :22:07.The steps we have made any improvements is amazing. You are 16
:22:08. > :22:12.years old. It is fantastic for you to be
:22:13. > :22:14.stepping up to the elite. I am honoured.
:22:15. > :22:24.It is fantastic. I'm glad to be part of it.
:22:25. > :22:31.Unbelievable, six feet, 11. You need to be tall. Good luck to them. Now,
:22:32. > :22:36.it's not unusual for a young boy in Yorkshire to want to be a footballer
:22:37. > :22:40.when he grows up. But what does he do when he's told in his teens that
:22:41. > :22:43.t he'll never realise his dream, because of a physical disability?
:22:44. > :22:46.Sohail Rehman from Leeds was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular
:22:47. > :22:49.Atrophy as a child. But through sheer guts and determination he's
:22:50. > :22:59.established what could be a unique position in the football industry.
:23:00. > :23:04.Paul Ogden's been to meet him. Header! Well done. On weekday nights
:23:05. > :23:10.at the sports centre in the shadow of Elland Road, FA qualified coach
:23:11. > :23:14.Sohail is the voice everyone listens to. Come on, quicker than that. As a
:23:15. > :23:18.13`year`old when he learned his disability had reached the point he
:23:19. > :23:23.would be wheelchair`bound, Sohail could have let the footballing
:23:24. > :23:26.ambitions slip away. But not this coach.
:23:27. > :23:32.I could feel myself getting weaker, the normal low things like getting
:23:33. > :23:36.out of bed, I was struggling. I was told by the specialist that in the
:23:37. > :23:40.next two years I would be wheelchair`bound. For me, that was
:23:41. > :23:44.like a kick in the teeth. It was one of those things I could not come to
:23:45. > :23:50.terms with. I started taking my badges and then
:23:51. > :23:55.the level one and level two and three. I was in a rush to get the
:23:56. > :24:01.badges. I'll is thought somebody might stop me. That was my
:24:02. > :24:07.mentality. I got my badges and I passed the course.
:24:08. > :24:12.21 years old now, Sohail routinely passes on his wisdom to local teams
:24:13. > :24:18.as part of a new venture set up amongst others I2`macro current
:24:19. > :24:26.Leeds United players. The coach isn't in it for anything else I have
:24:27. > :24:30.been offered a few jobs but I don't want to take them.
:24:31. > :24:34.I want to go into local communities and the youth clubs and help them
:24:35. > :24:39.develop their skills. That is my goal for the next few years. Going
:24:40. > :24:46.around to help people develop their skills so they have a chance of
:24:47. > :24:49.making it. I want to give them a chance of getting their dreams.
:24:50. > :24:55.Goodlad. All very best. A great coach. And
:24:56. > :25:01.this is a great weather presenter. An accurate one. Some lovely
:25:02. > :25:10.pictures which came in. One of my favourite old haunts, some locals
:25:11. > :25:20.there. A beautiful day, lots of sunshine. This was a nice sunrise.
:25:21. > :25:23.We have had lots of pictures of the fire. You saw those at the top of
:25:24. > :25:35.the programme but keep your pictures coming in. Let me tell you, the

:25:53. > :25:59.Sunny intervals and scattered showers, low pressure in charge. Hit
:26:00. > :26:04.and miss showers but bright and sunny... Shut up! Sunny spells
:26:05. > :26:10.around. Some of us have been quite lucky. You consider showers have
:26:11. > :26:15.been banding up. If you coming through in South Yorkshire now. They
:26:16. > :26:19.continue to push north eastwards. A scattering of showers tonight,
:26:20. > :26:29.easing off but as you can see, one to showers by dawn. Miss dinners in
:26:30. > :26:41.places, the wind will fall light. `` mistiness. The sun rises in the

:26:52. > :26:57.of showers. Hit and miss, it could be having but some places stay in
:26:58. > :27:00.Tiley Drive. Temperatures expected to be close to average for the
:27:01. > :27:13.middle of January, the south`westerly breeze continues. ``
:27:14. > :27:17.entirely dry. Some uncertainty for the details this weekend, Saturday,
